NFL | Ex 49ers RB Coffee playing semi-pro football    Mon May 16, 03:04 PM

Glen Coffee, ex-49ers RB, has recently signed on to play semi-pro football in Florida. Coffee retired abruptly after one season with San Francisco. He was a third-round selection by the 49ers in the 2009 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Coffee refuses to comment on why he retired from the NFL, but is looking forward to playing the game he loves. There's a chance he could return to the league, but there's a perception that he doesn't love the game. We don't think teams would exactly be lining up to get his services.

49ers | Glen Coffee retires from football    Fri Aug 13, 03:06 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Glen Coffee announced he was moving on from football Friday, Aug. 13, reports CSNBayArea.com's Matt Maiocco. 'This has been a tough decision for me to make, but at this time in my life I feel it is best for me that I move on from football,' Coffee said in a statement released through the 49ers. 'I appreciate what the 49ers, my teammates and coaches have done for me, and I wish them a blessed season and all the best in the future.' Coffee was competing for the backup job behind RB Frank Gore. He added 17 pounds while remaining in the Bay Area for the entire offseason to prepare for this season.

Footballguys view: Michael Robinson becomes the backup RB to Frank Gore and suddenly has a lot of potential value this year. RBs are going to be in demand around camp cut time.

49ers | Anthony Dixon has uphill battle for No. 2 RB job    Tue Aug 3, 06:46 PM

San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye indicated that RB Anthony Dixon has an uphill battle to try to take over the No. 2 running back job from RB Glen Coffee, reports CSNBayArea.com's Matt Maiocco. 'He's got a big hill to climb,' Raye said. 'The No. 2 guy here (Coffee) isn't too shabby. So if he steps up to that point where he is knocking that guy out, then we will really be pleased.'

Footballguys view: It looks like Coffee is the clear handcuff to Frank Gore right now, although Dixon may still be the better back to own in dynasty leagues.

49ers | Glen Coffee, Anthony Dixon to compete for playing time    Tue Jun 8, 05:02 PM

San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Singletary said RB Glen Coffee and RB Anthony Dixon will be competing for playing time behind RB Frank Gore this season, reports Phil Barber, of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat.

Footballguys view: Coffee was a disappointment last year backing up Frank Gore, and he could lose his job to rookie Anthony Dixon if he's not careful. Dixon is a powerful runner, who knows how to cutback against the grain to pick up big yardage. The rookie has to become better in pass protection if he wants to win the backup job behind Frank Gore. San Francisco wants to be a more run heavy team in 2010, and Gore owners must handcuff the winner of this battle in their fantasy drafts.

49ers | Glen Coffee adds weight during offseason    Mon May 17, 04:45 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Glen Coffee currently weighs 220 pounds and plans on adding five more pounds before the season, reports Matt Maiocco, of CSNBayArea.com. Coffee played at 205 pounds during last season.

Footballguys view: Coffee was unimpressive in limited playing time last year and will be pushed by rookie Anthony Dixon to be the backup behind Frank Gore. Dixon has the perfect skill set for the 49ers offense, plays with more instincts, and is a much bigger back than Coffee - even at his new weight. Frank Gore owners need to follow this backup battle closely in training camp.

Daniel Brown, of the San Jose Mercury News, reports San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Singletary said the offense will not change with RB Glen Coffee as the starting running back.

Footballguys view: Coffee has a hard charging running style that leads to plenty of yards after contact. Even though he hasn't looked as good in the regular season as he did in the preseason, the 49ers are very confident in the rookie from Alabama. The Rams should expect a heavy dose of Coffee in this week's game.

49ers | No plans to elevate Sheets from practice squad    Wed Sep 30, 09:28 AM

Matthew Barrows, of the Sacramento Bee, reports the San Francisco 49ers have no plans to elevate RB Kory Sheets from the practice squad this week despite the injury to RB Frank Gore (ankle). The team is confident in the tandem of RB Glen Coffee and RB Michael Robinson.

Footballguys view: Kory Sheets has NFL talent, and one of the best stiff arms in all of football, but he'll have to wait for his opportunity. If Coffee or Robinson get banged up this week, we should see Sheets called up from the practice squad. Gore is expected to miss the next three weeks.

49ers | Offensive coordinator wants to run 60% of the time    Tue Sep 1, 07:21 PM

Matt Maiocco, of the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat, reports on his Twitter feed that the 49ers offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye said he wants to run the ball 60% of the time.

Footballguys view: Many teams aspire to this kind of run-heavy split, almost none achieve it. Still, the 49ers have an offensive line of road graders, and Mike Singletary seems to have the team playing very fired up these days. Frank Gore looks like an excellent consolation prize for those looking to go RB at the end of the first round, and Glen Coffee is a must-handcuff after his outstanding preseason.

Matt Maiocco, of the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat, reports on his Twitter feed that his guess of the split of carries of Frank Gore and Glen Coffee within a game would be Gore 17, Coffee 6.

49ers | Backup runners run through Oakland D    Sun Aug 23, 06:16 AM

The Associated Press reports San Francisco 49ers rookie RB Glen Coffee ripped the Oakland Raiders' defense apart Saturday, Aug. 22. He rushed for 129 yards on 16 carries, while having four runs of at least 10 yards, including a 35-yarder. Teammate Michael Robinson also performed well, piling up 97 yards rushing on 14 carries.

Footballguys view: This is not a good sign for the Oakland run defense. Coffee is playing his way into must-handcuff status for Frank Gore owners. He is a very determined runner, with little wiggle in the open field. Coffee likes to initiate contact, run over defenders, and has enough straight line speed to rack up positive yards in a hurry.

  49ers | Coffee's role for season unclear    Sat Aug 22, 10:06 PM

Mike Sando, of ESPN.com, reports San Francisco 49ers RB Glen Coffee has performed well during preseason games but his role for the regular season still has not been defined to this point.

Footballguys view: Frank Gore is the engine of the offense, and the 49ers are going to try and keep him healthy by substituting in Glen Coffee from time to time. Coffee has performed well in the preseason, with a hard charging running style, and a never-die-easy attitude. If Gore were to go down with injury, Coffee would be able to handle most of the workload and be an adequate replacement. Gore owners need to handcuff Coffee to him in the later rounds.

49ers | Offensive coordinator raves about Coffee    Wed Aug 19, 08:50 PM

Kevin Lynch, of the San Francisco Chronicle, reports that 49ers offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye had great things to say about third-round pick RB Glen Coffee. "He has really been exceptional as a rookie running back. He's way ahead of the curve as far as a rookie back in pass protection, which is really unusual. You lose pass protection with a rookie running back and then you lose your quarterback," Raye said.

Footballguys view: There have been tons of great reports about Frank Gore, but it sounds like the 49ers will be ok if Gore misses time again this year.

49ers | Singletary excited about Glen Coffee    Sat Aug 15, 03:46 PM

Matt Maiocco, from the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports on his twitter feed that 49ers head coach Mike Singletary was excited from what he saw of rookie RB Glen Coffee. Said he'll be a "great addition" to 49ers as Frank Gore's backup.

Footballguys view: Coffee had a great pro debut against the Broncos on Friday night, finishing the game with 14 carries for 67 yards. It is the preseason, and it was against the Broncos, but fantasy owners - especially Gore owners - need to keep Coffee in mind near the end of the draft.

Matt Maiocco, of The Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports San Francisco 49ers RB Glen Coffee will start in the team's first preseason game Friday, Aug. 14.

Footballguys view: It will be good to see how Coffee does against a first-team defense. Most of the rookie backup RBs won't get that kind of shot to prove themselves in the preseason.

Offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye has been pleased with Coffee's one-cut-and-go running style.

Footballguys view: New offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye wants to run the ball, so with a good camp, Coffee could get 100+ touches in a backup/relief/change of pace role, and establish himself as the clear handcuff to Frank Gore for those owners worried about Gore's propensity to get dinged up.

Matt Maiocco, of The Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports the San Francisco 49ers are close to completing a deal with third-round draft choice RB Glen Coffee.

Footballguys view: The 49ers shouldn't have a problem signing Coffee who we feel should give at least half of his first paycheck to Bengals lineman Andre Smith, who opened HUGE holes for Coffee while they were at Alabama. He's expected to be the primary backup to Frank Gore, and should beat out veterans Michael Robinson and Thomas Clayton.
