University of Wisconsin analyst and former NFL quarterback Scott Tolzien was hired to new head coach Mike McCarthy's coaching staff with the Dallas Cowboys on Monday, Jan. 27, in a yet-to-be-determined capacity.
|Footballguys view: Tolzien came into the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of Wisconsin back in 2011. He bounced around the league to a few different teams, ending his playing career in 2017 with the Indianapolis Colts. Tolzien was hired by the Badgers as an analyst to help scout upcoming opponents and now he's back in the NFL as some sort of coaching assistant with the Cowboys. It will be interesting to see how McCarthy fills out the rest of his staff.|

NFL | Denzel Mims made a name for himself in Mobile Mon Jan 27, 01:01 PM
Baylor WR Denzel Mims was on 'another level' and 'did everything right' during Senior Bowl week, according to Nick Farabaugh of Pro Football Network. According to Farabaugh, Mims dismantled press, used his physicality to separate and displayed the kind of athleticism that made an unstoppable matchup for every cornerback he faced all week.
|Footballguys view: Mims had a fantastic week of work down in Mobile. He has track speed and can take the top off the defense. Mims is not just a speedy player, he also has body control, concentration and ball-tracking ability that could make him a special player in the pros. Most consider Mims a second-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft and he did nothing at the Senior Bowl to hurt that draft grade.|

University of Missouri offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Derek Dooley reportedly agreed to join new head coach Joe Judge's staff with the New York Giants on Monday, Jan. 27, in a yet-to-be-determined capacity.
|Footballguys view: This is Dooley's third stint in the NFL. He's been an assistant with the Dolphins and the Cowboys before jumping back to the college ranks as a head coach (Louisiana Tech) or OC/QB (Missouri). He worked closely with Drew Lock in college and helped him post impressive numbers. Now, Dooley is likely to work in some capacity with second-year pro Daniel Jones. We'll see what his official title is in the near future.|

Colts | Jack Doyle records touchdown at Pro Bowl Sun Jan 26, 06:20 PM
Indianapolis Colts TE Jack Doyle posted three catches for 63 yards and a touchdown on four targets for the AFC at the Pro Bowl Sunday, Jan. 26.
|Footballguys view: Doyle will continue to be a big part of the Colts passing game in 2020. However, we have questions about who his quarterback will be. The Colts could be in the market for a guy like Philip Rivers in free agency or they might draft a player like Jordan Love in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft. Either way, we expect them to add competition for Jacoby Brissett.|

Jaguars | DJ Chark scores for AFC at Pro Bowl Sun Jan 26, 06:16 PM
Jacksonville Jaguars WR DJ Chark Jr. registered two grabs for 67 yards, including a 60-yard touchdown in the third quarter, for the AFC at the Pro Bowl on Sunday, Jan. 26.
|Footballguys view: Chark had a breakout season in 2019. His 2020 outlook is a bit cloudy because we don't know who the quarterback will be. The Jaguars have not committed to either Nick Foles or Gardner Minshew. We'll see a QB competition this offseason and into training camp and the preseason. Chark should be a favorite target no matter who wins the starting job.|

Ravens | Mark Andrews shows out at Pro Bowl Sun Jan 26, 06:07 PM
Baltimore Ravens TE Mark Andrews ended up with a game-high nine receptions for an AFC-best 73 yards and a touchdown on 10 targets at the Pro Bowl on Sunday, Jan. 26.
|Footballguys view: Andrews is a favorite target of Lamar Jackson and that will continue in 2020. The second-year pro finished 2019 as the No.2 fantasy tight end in standard-scoring leagues...in large part due to his 10 touchdown receptions.|

Cowboys | Amari Cooper scores TD at Pro Bowl Sun Jan 26, 06:04 PM
Dallas Cowboys WR Amari Cooper finished with three grabs for 24 yards and a touchdown on seven targets for the NFC at the Pro Bowl on Sunday, Jan. 26.
|Footballguys view: Now, the Cowboys need to pay the man...not because of anything he does in the Pro Bowl but because he's one of their best weapons and he wants to stay with the team. The Cowboys have not yet opened talks with Cooper. They have to play him, QB Dak Prescott and CB Byron Jones somehow/someway this offseason. OverTheCap.com has the Cowboys with the 5th-most salary cap space ($79.8MM) in 2020.|

NFL | Javon Kinlaw a top prospect at Senior Bowl Sun Jan 26, 03:00 PM
South Carolina DT Javon Kinlaw was one of the most impressive prospects at the Senior Bowl this week, in the opinion of NFL Network's Bucky Brooks. Kinlaw showed an exceptional combination of strength, power and athleticism in one-on-one drills during practice. He played mostly at defensive tackle during college but has the skills to play defensive end in a 3-4 defensive alignment.
|Footballguys view: Kinlaw had a bit of Aaron Donald to his game during the practices at the Senior Bowl (where Donald looked dominant too years ago). He should be a first-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft and might land in the top 10. His game is all about disruption, strength, quickness and penetration to get after the quarterback.|
Texans | AJ McCarron may be re-signed Sun Jan 26, 02:08 PM
Houston Texans impending free-agent QB AJ McCarron is a candidate to be re-signed this offseason, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Sarah Barshop.
|Footballguys view: We can't imagine the market being too wild for McCarron. The Texans might want to keep him around as he knows the system and gives them veteran depth behind Deshaun Watson.|

Texans | Darren Fells could return Sun Jan 26, 02:02 PM
Houston Texans impending free-agent TE Darren Fells is a player the Texans will try to re-sign this offseason, but he probably will receive interest from multiple teams in free agency.
|Footballguys view: Fells could have a larger market than some think. However, the Texans have a good group of tight ends with guys still in place like Jordan Thomas and Jordan Akins. They might lose Fells but still be more than okay at tight end because of those two.|

Saints | Drew Brees plans to make decision soon Sun Jan 26, 11:49 AM
Updating a previous report, New Orleans Saints impending free-agent QB Drew Brees said he plans to 'give it a month or so' before determining if he will return to the team for the 2020 season or retire.
|Footballguys view: He had previously stated that he is not considering playing for any other teams. That means if it's the Saints or bust for Brees. He will make a decision soon enough for the team to go in a different direction if need be. Teddy Bridgewater is an unrestricted free agent in 2020 but loves the staff, his teammates and the city. He went 5-0 as the Saints starter when Brees was down in 2019 and could step in as the starter if Brees ends up retiring.|

NFL | Josh Uche impressing scouts Sat Jan 25, 11:04 PM
Michigan LB Josh Uche showed the athleticism needed to play outside linebacker during Senior Bowl week, according to an NFL scout. 'They'll call him a tweener in every draft profile you read, but he's so versatile that every NFL team could find a role for a guy like this,' the scout said.Link to story
NFL | Lofty comparison for Harrison Bryant Sat Jan 25, 10:31 PM
Florida Atlantic TE Harrison Bryant 'can be George Kittle 2.0,' according to an NFL scout who attended the Senior Bowl. 'He's really polished,' the scout said. 'He's athletic, runs good routes, can catch over the middle of the field.'
|Footballguys view: Let's not get too carried away with the comparison game. Bryant is a receiving tight end through and through. He's lined up like a wide receiver or in the slot more than he is as an in-line tight end because Bryant isn't much of a blocker. Scouts should be interested in Bryant because of his upside but we're not going to put him on the Kittle level.|
Eagles | Mile Sanders a complete back Sat Jan 25, 10:19 PM
Philadelphia Eagles RB Miles Sanders' 1,327 yards from scrimmage in 2019 ranked 16th in the NFL, and his 50 receptions were the most among rookie running backs.
|Footballguys view: Sanders is the top back for the Eagles and should get a larger role in 2020. He spent part of his rookie season a little banged up, or splitting time in a RBBC. The Eagles should use a committee at the position but with Sanders as the clear lead runner and receiver out of the backfield this upcoming season.|

Titans | A.J. Brown in step with Ryan Tannehill Sat Jan 25, 09:26 PM
Tennessee Titans WR A.J. Brown caught six of his eight touchdowns in 2019 in the 11 games QB Ryan Tannehill started. Brown had four of his five 100-yard games in that span, averaging at least 15 yards per catch seven times and 20-plus yards per catch four times.
|Footballguys view: We'll see if the Titans keep Tannehill around for 2020 and beyond. They should and are most likely to after Tannehill's performance from mid-October through the AFC Championship Game. Tannehill is set to be an unrestricted free agent in 2020 but we should see the Titans wrap him up with a new contract that keeps him as their starter.|

Cardinals | Kyler Murray in rare company Sat Jan 25, 09:18 PM
Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray finished the 2019 season with 3,722 passing yards, 544 rushing yards, 24 total touchdowns and 12 interceptions, joining Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton as the only rookie quarterbacks in NFL history to pass for at least 3,500 yards and rush for at least 500 yards.
|Footballguys view: Murray is off to a great start in the NFL...now the Cardinals just need to build a better team around him. It's clear the rookie was in command of his offense and that comfort level in the pros should continue this year. Murray finished as the No.9 fantasy quarterback in standard scoring leagues as a rookie. He's a clear QB1 for Fantasy GMs and could finish 2020 as a top-10 fantasy quarterback once again.|

Broncos | Phillip Lindsay recovered from surgery Sat Jan 25, 07:12 PM
Denver Broncos RB Phillip Lindsay (wrist) said Saturday, Jan. 25, has already recovered from a minor scope he had done on his wrist three weeks ago. 'The procedure definitely helped, because it gave me a lot more flexibility and less pain,' Lindsay said. 'The cleanup was to take out some scar tissue that built up over time, which I knew was going to have to happen. I knew about it since day one that I was going to have to get some cleanup done, especially after a season of getting hit. ... Honestly, I feel really good. I could play today if I needed to.'
|Footballguys view: This is the second offseason wrist surgery in as many seasons. However, this year's procedure is much less serious and Lindsay might be out there for offseason work later this spring. Lindsay will need to be a better receiver out of the backfield with new OC Pat Shurmur running the offense in 2020.|

NFL | Justin Herbert named MVP Sat Jan 25, 05:53 PM
Oregon QB Justin Herbert was named the MVP of the Senior Bowl Saturday, Jan. 25.
|Footballguys view: Herbert had a strong week of practice in Mobile and he follows that up with an MVP performance in the game. While most believe LSU QB Joe Burrow will be the Bengals pick at No.1 overall, Herbert is in the mix. The Bengals coached him during the week and if he impressed behind the scenes then he could be the top player off the board in the 2020 NFL draft.|
Texans | Will Fuller undergoes surgery Sat Jan 25, 04:37 PM
Houston Texans WR Will Fuller (groin) underwent sports hernia surgery, according to sources Saturday, Jan. 25. He's expected to make a full recovery.
|Footballguys view: Fuller has the speed to make plays with ease as a big-play target. However, he's always banged up with these soft tissue injuries. This groin injury slowed him down in 2019 and Fuller only appeared in 11 games last season. We'll see if he can get healthy and stay healthy for a full 16-game season in 2020...it would be the first time in his NFL career if he can do that.|

49ers | George Kittle hit grade milestone Sat Jan 25, 02:29 PM
San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle in 2019 received the highest-ever full-season grade given to a tight end by Pro Football Focus, and has been named the site's 2019 Dwight Stephenson Award winner as the best player regardless of position.
|Footballguys view: Nobody needs analytics to know that Kittle is damn good. It's an interesting mark that PFF graded him at and he is of course well deserving of the grade. Kittle will be a force the Chiefs have to contend with in the Super Bowl.|

NFL | Eric Berry planning 2020 return Sat Jan 25, 02:06 PM
Free-agent S Eric Berry (Chiefs) sat out the 2019 season but plans to play in 2020.
|Footballguys view: Berry only appeared in one game in 2017 and two games in 2018 before sitting out all of last season to get his mind and body right. NFL teams will be interested in Berry and he could get back to starting in the pros...but signing him comes with risk that will be cooked into his price.|

Buccaneers | Ex-GM: No tag for Jameis Winston Sat Jan 25, 01:18 PM
Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston is coming off an up-and-down season in which he hit career highs in yards (5,109) and touchdowns (33) but also interceptions (30), including seven pick-sixes, and former Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik said it's time the Bucs and Winston part ways. 'I would be surprised if they pay him,' Dominik told PewterReport.com. 'Maybe they will. It's their decision, but I would be shocked if the Bucs franchised Winston -- or transitioned him. I think the decision they have is certainly difficult because there has been some production there, but I don't know how you could justify paying Jameis Winston more money this year than he made last year.'
|Footballguys view: Winston played on the fifth-year option in 2019 and had a tumultuous season. Bucs head coach Bruce Arians has to love Winston's ability to go downfield but the turnover problem is just too much. With so many quarterback options this offseason in free agency, trades and the draft it clouds any future Winston could have in Tampa. We'll get more information about how the team feels around the Scouting Combine in February.|

NFL | Joe Burrow not picky on destination Sat Jan 25, 12:45 PM
Former LSU QB and 2020 Draft prospect Joe Burrow says he'll gladly play for any team that drafts him. 'Whoever wants to pay me money to play the game of football, I'll play for 'em, it doesn't matter to me,' Burrow told Bloomberg News.
|Footballguys view: The Bengals have the No.1 overall pick and selecting the former Ohio Mr. Football makes a lot of sense. We can't say Burrow is a lock with Justin Herbert climbing up draft boards, but Cincinnati is a likely destination. The Bengals are unlikely to trade out of the No.1 pick according to reports.|
Chiefs | Brett Favre sees self in Patrick Mahomes Sat Jan 25, 12:25 PM
Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes reminds retired QB Brett Favre of himself with some of the traits he has displayed on the field. 'I see the comparison,″ Favre said. 'He may not admit this but he probably feels there is no throw he can't make or no angle he can't make it from. Whether he's flushed left or to the right, his vision always is down the field. I was always looking for the big play first and knew I could always react underneath if I needed, too. You have to have a certain confidence or air about you that you can make any throw, and it has been proven he can make any throw.'
|Footballguys view: It's always difficult throwing around GOAT comparisons for young players but Mahomes certainly fits the bill. Favre made unorthodox plays but was a great passer...just like Mahomes. We think Mahomes has a bit of John Elway to his games as well with a level of athleticism that Favre didn't have. How is that for comparisons?|

Patriots | NE wants decision from Tom Brady soon Sat Jan 25, 06:39 AM
The New England Patriots want to know if impending free-agent QB Tom Brady will return to the team for the 2020 season before the legal tampering period for free agency begins March 16, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
|Footballguys view: The Patriots should get their answer about that time. The market for Brady would be strong if he chooses to move on for the first time in his career. We could see a team like the Chargers or Raiders making a strong move for the future Hall of Fame quarterback.|
