Eagles | Darren Sproles ready to retire after 2018    Sun Jul 15, 05:00 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Darren Sproles expects to retire at the end of the season, according to a social media post he made Sunday, July 15.

Footballguys view: Sproles coming back for this year was not a given after his 2017 ended with a torn ACL. He won't be a hall of famer, but Sproles made so much of an impression while defying his the track record of backs with his body type that we'll be comparing prospects to him for years to come.

Giants | Sterling Shepard tore up crossing routes    Sun Jul 15, 04:13 PM

New York Giants WR Sterling Shepard recorded 11 catches for 202 yards and a touchdown on 17 targets on crossing routes, good for a receiver rating of 125.1 - the third-best mark in the league in 2017. In addition, he averaged 11.5 yards after the catch on those routes - the most in the league since Calvin Johnson in 2012, according to Pro Football Focus.

Footballguys view: Shepard is the lowest drafted of the four young cornerstones in the Giants offense, but he is likely to face the best matchups, especially early in the season. He could be a fantasy surprise this year.

Jets | Tight end committee likely for NY Jets    Sun Jul 15, 02:34 PM

New York Jets TEs Chris Herndon and Jordan Leggett are expected to battle it out in training camp to be the starter at tight end, but it is likely the team ends up deciding on 'a fairly equitable workload split' between the two, according to Darryl Slater of NJ.com.

Footballguys view: The Jets tight end position created some value when Austin Seferian-Jenkins was their best red zone receiver last year, but he is in Jacksonville now and the team is breaking in new options. This is only a situation to monitor in deep tight end premium dynasty leagues.

Eagles | Mike Wallace gets behind defenses    Sun Jul 15, 02:30 PM

Philadelphia Eagles WR Mike Wallace has nine receptions of 40 or more yards over the last two seasons. By comparison, the Eagles have 14 such plays over the same span as a team.

Footballguys view: Wallace has been reasonably productive in the low voltage Ravens passing game, so he could have best ball and deep league matchup bye/injury value in a much better offense. He'll be on the early season waiver wire watch list.

Eagles | Mack Hollins to play bigger role in 2018?    Sun Jul 15, 02:20 PM

Philadelphia Eagles WR Mack Hollins is expected to return in the same role he played in 2017 as a core special teamer and the team's fourth receiver, although it is possible he could see a modest increase in opportunities, according to Jimmy Kempski of The Philly Voice.

Footballguys view: The trade of Torrey Smith to Carolina opened a door for Hollins, and the bargain signing of Mike Wallace closed it. Hollins has flashed in limited action and his long term outlook is still bright with Carson Wentz installed as Philadelphia's quarterback, but his short term value is limited unless an outside receiver for the Eagles gets hurt.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell extension close to getting done?    Sun Jul 15, 02:04 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell 'wants to get the deal done' ahead of the July 16 deadline for signing players on the franchise tag to a long-term extension, according to head coach Mike Tomlin.

Footballguys view: This one will come down to the wire. The main variable is probably what Bell thinks he can get in free agency next year. It already appears that the deal he would get now is less than what he was offered last summer, and it's certainly possible that he would get less than he is being offered now next year no matter how well he performs. The smart bet is probably that he plays this year under the franchise tag again, but this year it seems there's a better chance of a long term deal getting done than last year.

Giants | B.J. Hill could start on defensive line    Sun Jul 15, 10:49 AM

New York Giants DE B.J. Hill could start at left defensive end following an impressive offseason, in the opinion of NJ Advance Media's Ryan Dunleavy.

Footballguys view: Hill fits as an end/tackle tweener to run interference along big bodies Dalvin Tomlinson and Damon Harrison on the defensive line. Former Cardinal Josh Mauro joined James Bettcher and could start eventually, but will serve a four-game suspension to open the season.

Giants | Will Hernandez could start    Sun Jul 15, 10:44 AM

New York Giants OG Will Hernandez could start at left guard, in the opinion of NJ Advance Media's Ryan Dunleavy.

Footballguys view: Hernandez is a mauler in the run game and far from a liability as a pass blocker. He should help the Giants not miss Justin Pugh, who signed a big contract with the Cardinals in the offseason.

Broncos | Royce Freeman could start    Sun Jul 15, 12:33 AM

Denver Broncos RB Royce Freeman will be given every opportunity to earn the starting job, according to retired SS Steve Atwater.

Footballguys view: Devontae Booker has fans in the Denver organization, but he hasn't done anything to show that he's a favorite to take over this backfield after the departure of CJ Anderson. Booker will still play a role in the passing game in any event, but Freeman should be better between the tackles, and he's at least adequate as a blocker and receiver. Freeman's weak competition could equal upside as a mid-round pick.

Giants | Patrick Omameh in line to start    Sat Jul 14, 11:19 PM

New York Giants OG Patrick Omameh is expected to start at right guard ahead of OG John Jerry.

Footballguys view: The Giants continue to rearrange the offensive line and we hope it's not akin to rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. The right side is the concern, and that's where Jerry resides. This could help, but you still have to contend with Ereck Flowers at right tackle, so expect more rearranging as camp happens.

Texans | Keke Coutee gaining supporters    Sat Jul 14, 11:10 PM

Houston Texans WR Keke Coutee will be able to help in the return game, according to retired WR Andre Johnson, and Johnson called Coutee a 'great receiver.'

Footballguys view: Coutee could do some damage out of the slot, and is a big-play creator, so we aren't shocked Johnson is impressed. Rookie receivers are shaky business, though, especially Day Three prospects, so we aren't rushing out to pick him up. We like the idea of him as a returner, and that could help earn some fantasy points for the Texans Defense/Special teams units.

Dolphins | DeVante Parker ready to deliver?    Sat Jul 14, 09:26 PM

Miami Dolphins WR DeVante Parker has been a 'different guy' this offseason and is playing with a sense of urgency, according to wide receivers coach Benjamin Johnson.

Footballguys view: Once again, this is the same tune we hear year after year. As such, it's hard to get on board with the whole "he's a whole new player!" when we never see the results of the hype. Not having to contend with Jarvis Landry might be a plus, but we are concerned with Ryan Tannehill and Parker's own limitations. He's tracking as the 40th receiver off the board, and that's about where we expect him to be right now. We need to see results before qwe buy in too hard.

Steelers | Deadline closing in for Le'Veon Bell    Sat Jul 14, 03:21 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell has made some progress in long-term contract talks with the Steelers, but it is still uncertain whether the two sides will reach a deal before the July 16 deadline.

Footballguys view: We are still unconcerned about the contract issue, though at the end of the day it remains any situation to watch. Bell is arguably the top running back i fantasy. If you want him on your squad, you will have to pay dearly for him.

Lions | Long-term deal unlikely for Ziggy Ansah    Sat Jul 14, 03:13 PM

Detroit Lions DE Ziggy Ansah likely will not receive a long-term extension before the July 16 deadline unless there is a significant turn of events in contract negotiations, according to sources.

Footballguys view: A tremendous defensive end, Ansah will see interest next offseason. The Lions have to balance his ability with cost though, so they may not look to retain him after this contract is done. Ansah has a ton of incentive to have a great season and set himself up to make significant money next spring. We expect plenty of fantasy production from him this season.

Giants | Russell Shepard could earn solid role    Sat Jul 14, 12:59 PM

New York Giants WR Russell Shepard has a chance to win the No. 4 receiver job if he can show reliable hands during training camp and the preseason.

Footballguys view: The reality is that with Odell Beckham Jr., Evan Engram, Sterling Shepard, and now Saquon Barkley, that any receiver who is considered the fourth or fifth best on the team is unlikely to have fantasy relevance. He's not worth tracking.

Giants | Hunter Sharp could push for returner job    Sat Jul 14, 12:57 PM

New York Giants WR Hunter Sharp may compete for the kick and punt returner job during training camp. Sharp did see some snaps with the first-team offense during offseason workouts.

Footballguys view: Sharp is unlikely to have an impact on offense directly, but watch how he does on special teams for returns. That's for two reasons. One, if he can gain considerable yards on returns, that helps set up the offense for Success which will translate to fantasy points. Secondly, if you're looking at special teams production for a Fantasy Defense, having a guy who might be able to make some noise on the ground is helpful.

Patriots | Two WRs may compete for one spot    Sat Jul 14, 12:15 PM

New England Patriots WRs Kenny Britt and Phillip Dorsett likely will compete for the No. 5 receiver job during training camp.

Footballguys view: Both have shown ability in the past but neither one has done so consistently. It's hard to imagine fifth receiver on the Patriots moving the needle in as far as fantasy production is concerned, but it's worth taking note of who wins the job in case of injuries ahead of that receiver.

Giants | R.J. McIntosh could be signed soon    Sat Jul 14, 11:50 AM

The New York Giants are expected to reach a deal with unsigned DT R.J. McIntosh (undisclosed) soon, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. He has not participated in any of the club's 16 practice sessions due to a 'minor medical issue,' which could possibly be related to the thyroid condition he was diagnosed with at the NFL Combine.

Eagles | Cameron Johnston not facing any current competition    Sat Jul 14, 11:18 AM

Philadelphia Eagles P Cameron Johnston is currently the only punter on the team's roster and it appears likely he will enter training camp without any competition. That could change if he struggles early on, according to NJ.com's Eliot Shorr-Parks.

Eagles | Jalen Mills could be used as nickel cornerback    Sat Jul 14, 11:17 AM

Philadelphia Eagles CBs Jalen Mills, De'Vante Bausby and Sidney Jones split time during offseason practices working at nickel cornerback. In the opinion of NJ.com's Eliot Shorr-Parks, Mills is likely to win the job, with Jones playing the outside when the Eagles use five defensive backs. Shorr-Parks believes that Mills will lead the team's cornerbacks in snaps played even if he is used in the nickel cornerback role.

49ers | Dante Pettis the No. 3 WR?    Sat Jul 14, 12:16 AM

San Francisco 49ers WR Dante Pettis could 'make an impact quicker than most expect,' according to Nick Shook of NFL.com, and Shook believes Pettis could beat out WR Aldrick Robinson for the No. 3 receiver job.

Footballguys view: The team drafted him because he is versatile enough to line up at every receiving position. There's a lot of opportunity there for him to be on the field. Right now his ADP is 222nd overall and the 72nd receiver coming off the board, but we think there's a chance he can outproduce that, which might make him a value.

Cardinals | Christian Kirk in position to contribute     Sat Jul 14, 12:11 AM

Arizona Cardinals WR Christian Kirk has an opportunity to make an immediate impact as an 'underneath threat' in the passing attack, according to Nick Shook of NFL.com.

Footballguys view: Most pundits feel Kirk is a slot guy, which means he is stuck behind Larry Fitzgerald until the veteran retires. Luckily, he can also play outside, which will give him ample opportunity to produce in year one. Right now he is going off the boards as the 62nd receiver off the board. We'd feel like he had the potential to be very valuable there if we knew more about the quarterback situation. But he could move as the summer goes on.

New York Giants OT Ereck Flowers' move to right tackle isn't likely to help his production, according to former head coach Ben McAdoo. 'He can't bend, you got to be able to bend,' McAdoo said. 'You can run around him on that side just like you can on the other side.'

Titans | Michael Campanaro may make team    Fri Jul 13, 07:25 PM

Tennessee Titans WR Michael Campanaro was impressive during the early part of offseason workouts before he suffered an injury and should have a chance to earn a roster spot during training camp, in the opinion of TitansOnline.com's Jim Wyatt.

Footballguys view: Campanaro is a solid return specialist and he can function as a backup to Taywan Taylor in the slot. He doesn't have Taylor's deep speed, but Campanaro is crafty after the catch and he flashes good quickness in his routes - when he is healthy, which hasn't been that often in his NFL career.

Packers | Green Bay adds Ethan Cooper    Fri Jul 13, 06:32 PM

New York Giants OG Ethan Cooper was claimed off waivers by the Green Bay Packers Friday, July 13, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Giants signed Zac Kerin, who had played with head coach Pat Shurmur in Minnesota when Shurmur was the offensive coordinator. Cooper was a Steelers UDFA last year and spent time on the Giants practice squad.

Browns | Jamie Meder worked with starters    Fri Jul 13, 05:22 PM

Cleveland Browns DT Jamie Meder worked with first-team defense during offseason workouts and will compete with DT Larry Ogunjobi for one of the starting defensive tackle jobs. Defensive coordinator Gregg Williams said Meder is one of the best run stoppers in the NFL.

Footballguys view: The Browns have a decent rotation at defensive tackle even after they traded away Danny Shelton to the Patriots. Shelton was a key part of their run defense, but the team is confident in the youth and depth at the position and should still be among the tougher run defenses in the NFL.

Jets | Quincy Enunwa likely to be slot    Fri Jul 13, 05:21 PM

New York Jets WR Quincy Enunwa likely will be used as a slot receiver this season with WRs Robby Anderson and Jermaine Kearse as the outside receivers, in the opinion of the New York Post's Brian Costello.

Footballguys view: Kearse is still not a 100% lock to make the team if Terrelle Pryor looks good enough to start in camp and young players like Chris Hansen and Ardarius Stewart impress, but Enunwa is being eased back in from his neck injury and Pryor wasn't healthy the last time we saw him. It looks like Anderson is the only Jets receiver worth a pick except in very deep leagues.

Steelers | Chukwuma Okorafor may be swing tackle    Fri Jul 13, 05:00 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers OT Chukwuma Okorafor may be the main backup to both offensive tackle spots this season because of OT Jerald Hawkins' (quadriceps) injury.

Footballguys view: Hawkins was expected to play a big role this year after Chris Hubbard signed a big contract in Cleveland to become their starting right tackle. Okorafor is more of a long-term project, but he could be thrown into the fire this year if the Steelers suffer an injury at either tackle position.

Patriots | Trey Flowers may not get extension    Fri Jul 13, 04:18 PM

New England Patriots DE Trey Flowers is entering the final year of his contract but is not a lock for a contract extension because the Patriots have decided in the past to not sign some of their homegrown players to lucrative contracts, in the opinion of NBC Sports Boston's Tom E. Curran.

Footballguys view: Flowers has been the closest thing the Patriots have to an elite pass rusher after they traded Chandler Jones. Derek Rivers and Deatrich Wise are next up in the pipeline and both are worth stashing in big play IDP dynasty leagues.

Cowboys | Jihad Ward expected to push for starting job    Fri Jul 13, 04:09 PM

Dallas Cowboys DT Jihad Ward likely will push DT Maliek Collins (foot) for one of the starting defensive tackle jobs during training camp. Collins' status for the start of training camp is uncertain because he is recovering from foot surgery.

Footballguys view: Collins is the more explosive and productive pass rusher, but his foot issue is keeping him from building on his surprising rookie year in 2016. Ward was a disappointment in Oakland, but he is impressing so far in Dallas.

Free-agent RB Branden Oliver (Chargers) is receiving interest from the Buffalo Bills, and the team is looking into scheduling a workout with Oliver, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Oliver is a local hero and the Bills obviously could be in need of help at running back with LeSean McCoy's potential legal troubles. This is still going to be a tough situation for a street free agent to make a fantasy impact this year.

NFL | DeMarco Murray set to announce retirement    Fri Jul 13, 02:06 PM

Free-agent RB DeMarco Murray (Titans) is expected to announce his retirement from the NFL on Friday, July 13.

Footballguys view: Murray overcame a catastrophic injury in college at Oklahoma and reinvented himself. He defied expectations at multiple stops with an intensity only matched by the likes of Frank Gore and Marshawn Lynch. At his best, he was one of the top 3-5 backs in the league. The veteran back camp injury signing list will get one shorter.

Seahawks | Brandon Marshall contract incentives    Fri Jul 13, 01:16 PM

Updating a previous report, Seattle Seahawks WR Brandon Marshall's can more than double the value of the one-year, $1.015 million contract he signed in May. Marshall can earn up to $350,000 if he catches more than 70 passes, another $350,000 if he tops 800 yards receiving and three and $350,000 more if scores at least seven touchdowns.

Footballguys view: Marshall is by no means a lock for a roster spot, but if he does make the team, he could be the #2 outside receiver. Tyler Lockett is basically a starter and the second most valuable receiver on the team after Doug Baldwin, with 2017 third-rounder Amara Darboh and free agent signing Jaron Brown also having a say in what happens in this receiver corps.
