Texans | Wendall Williams could carve out a role    Fri Jun 23, 09:37 PM

Houston Texans WR Wendall Williams might be the fastest player on the team, according to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, and McClain believes Williams could break camp as the fourth or fifth receiver if he can improve his route running.

Footballguys view: We see Williams as the fifth WR on the depth chart for the Texans behind DeAndre Hopkins, Will Fuller, Braxton Miller and Jaelen Strong. Undrafted out of the University of the Cumberlands in 2016, Williams is used to a heavy target load and uses his speed to blaze by defenders deep. In super deep dynasty leagues, we'll be monitoring his progress.

Seahawks | C.J. Prosise to be worked into offense?    Fri Jun 23, 09:31 PM

Seattle Seahawks RB C.J. Prosise will be used mainly as the third-down back, according to Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times, but Condotta believes Prosise will also be worked into the offense to exploit specific matchups.

Footballguys view: The Seahawks are likely to have some sort of three-headed RBBC in 2017. Earlier reports have suggested they will ride the 'hot hand' of either Eddie Lacy or Thomas Rawls as runners. Prosise is dangerous with the rock, and he should be mixed in as a pass-catching or change-of-pace threat. He's going off the board at RB38 (8.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Saints | Alvin Kamara working as receiver    Fri Jun 23, 09:17 PM

New Orleans Saints RB Alvin Kamara spent time working with the receivers during OTAs.

Footballguys view: Kamara is a running back, but he is certainly dangerous with the ball in open space. The Saints should use him as a receiving/change-of-pace back behind Mark Ingram and Adrian Peterson. Despite their collection of talent in 2017, Kamara should be able to flash enough to get fantasy owners excited about his future as a potential feature back for this team.

Steelers | Knile Davis working on special teams    Fri Jun 23, 06:41 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Knile Davis worked on most of the special teams units during offseason workouts and was told he will compete for the kick returner job. He also received a solid amount of snaps at running back during the workouts since RB Le'Veon Bell was not present and RB James Conner (hamstring) was dealing with an injury.

Footballguys view: Davis is competing to be the third running back in Pittsburgh. He will need to stand out on special teams if he wants to get a spot on the roster.

Jets | Frankie Hammond may be top punt returner    Fri Jun 23, 06:28 PM

New York Jets WR Frankie Hammond Jr. appears to be the leading candidate for the punt returner job at this point, but RB Elijah McGuire could win the job if he performs well during training camp.

Footballguys view: We like the upside of McGuire in this situation. This is a battle that will play itself out in training camp.

Saints | Terron Armstead undergoes surgery    Fri Jun 23, 04:43 PM

New Orleans Saints OT Terron Armstead (shoulder) underwent surgery Monday, June 19, to repair the torn labrum in his shoulder and is expected to do most of his rehab in New Orleans, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Saints have a few different options while Amsterdam is out. We think rookie first-round pick Ryan Ramczyk could win the starting left tackle job.

Ravens | BAL unlikely looking at Anquan Boldin    Fri Jun 23, 04:23 PM

Free-agent WR Anquan Boldin (Lions) probably is not an option for the Baltimore Ravens at this point because the team is content with the receivers they have on the roster, in the opinion of the Baltimore Sun's Jeff Zrebiec.

Footballguys view: It's fun to think about Boldin playing in Baltimore again but the reality is he's unlikely to go there. Many reports indicate that Boldin wants to play for a contender and perhaps play near his home in Florida.

Broncos | Chad Kelly not a roster lock?    Fri Jun 23, 02:41 PM

Denver Broncos seventh-round QB Chad Kelly is not guaranteed a spot on the 53-man roster, according to the Denver Post's Cameron Wolfe, who believes Kelly may be placed on the Reserved/Injured list in 2017 in order to let him completely recover from wrist and knee surgeries.

Footballguys view: Kelly is not in the mix for the Broncos this year. Trevor siemian and Paxton Lynch will compete for the starting job in training camp. If Kelly is healthy next year he could potentially be in the competition for the starting job.

Texans | Deshaun Watson coming along nicely    Fri Jun 23, 01:57 PM

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson has impressed head coach Bill O'Brien with his poise, intelligence and athleticism in a recent interview with the Houston Chronicle.

Footballguys view: We think Watson wins this job over Tom Savage. With his rushing ability and the great receiving weapons around him, Watson should be a Qb2 with upside for fantasy owners.

Redskins | Jamison Crowder 'can play anywhere'    Fri Jun 23, 12:12 PM

Washington Redskins WR Jamison Crowder received a ton of praise from head coach Jay Gruden in a recent interview with the Washington Post.

Footballguys view: The one constant at the WR position for Washington this year is Crowder. With DeSean Jackson (Buccaneers) and Pierre Garcon (49ers) gone in free agency, Washington will have a different look when it comes to their pass catchers. Terrelle Pryor could be the primary target for QB Kirk Cousins and of course TE Jordan Reed will have a significant role. Crowder is there to catch 70 or more catches this year, and there's a chance he could get 90-ish receptions in 2017 depending on how things shake out around him.

Jets | Matt Forte to be workhorse?    Fri Jun 23, 10:38 AM

New York Jets RB Matt Forte will be the offensive workhorse this season, in the opinion of NJ Advance Media's Connor Hughes.

Footballguys view: This is a conflicting report as to what most expected with the rebuilding Jets in 2017. Bilal Powell was thought to be the primary back with Forte playing the complementary role. Forte has a current ADP of RB43 (9.08) while Powell is at RB27 (6.03) in 12-team PPR leagues. Watch this battle closely in training camp to see how it unfolds.

Jets | Elijah McGuire will have a role    Fri Jun 23, 10:38 AM

New York Jets RB Elijah McGuire will have a role with the team this season, according to running backs coach Stump Mitchell. 'I like everything (about him),' Mitchell said. 'He's got great hands. As a third-down back or simply a back, he can catch the ball extremely well. He has good vision, and a good ability to make cuts. I like him. He's a student of the game and good in the classroom.'

Footballguys view: McGuire can be a standout player in a certain role. At 5'10" 214 pounds, McGuire has a good size/speed combination. He's not a forceful runner between the tackles but can be especially dangerous in space. McGuire can be lined up in the slot or catch passes easily as a relief-valve receiver out of the backfield.

Bengals | Andre Smith moving to guard    Fri Jun 23, 10:13 AM

Cincinnati Bengals OT Andre Smith is moving from right tackle to offensive guard this season.

Footballguys view: The Bengals have a new-look offensive line after losing OT Andrew Whitworth (Rams) and OG Kevin Zeitler (Browns) in free agency. Smith is playing inside at guard and the Bengals will have Cedric Ogbuehi and Jake Fisher outside at tackle. A top-10 pick in 2009, Smith is not the player he used to be but gives the Bengals valuable insurance at the tackle position.

Patriots | David Harris likely to make team    Fri Jun 23, 10:12 AM

New England Patriots LB David Harris is a near lock to make the 53-man roster.

Footballguys view: With $1.25 million in guaranteed money, Harris is a near lock for the final roster. Not a shock given his veteran experience and ability to still be a two-down run-stuffer. Harris should play on early downs, leaving LB Shea McLellin for sub-package situations.

Link to story

Patriots | Shea McClellin likely in passing-down role    Fri Jun 23, 10:11 AM

New England Patriots LB Shea McClellin is likely to be used in a 'passing-game' role to utilize his coverage skills.

Footballguys view: That's why the team added David Harris after the Jets released him. Harris is not a player you want in on passing downs, but he's a better run-defender than McClellin. The combination should work out nicely for the Patriots.

Texans | Braxton Miller making strides    Fri Jun 23, 12:43 AM

Houston Texans WR Braxton Miller was praised for his progress in OTAs by assistant coach Wes Welker.

Footballguys view: Miller was a converted quarterback from Ohio State who barely started learning the wide receiver position in college. He's a phenomenal athlete and could be a fine slot receiver for the Texans. Their passing game is a bit of a question mark with rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson as the likely starter. That limits Miller's fantasy impact (especially behind DeAndre Hopkins and Will Fuller), and we'd project the second-year pro for around 25 catches in 2017.

Lions | Eric Ebron expecting big things    Fri Jun 23, 12:09 AM

Detroit Lions TE Eric Ebron said he believes the addition of TE Darren Fells will allow him to play to his strengths. 'I think it's going to play a significant role for me to allow me to do the things that I'm best at,' Ebron said.

Footballguys view: Ebron will be the primary receiving threat for the Lions at the tight end position. Fuller is a blocker and won't contribute much as a receiver. In the fourth round of the 2017 NFL draft, the Lions selected another big-bodied tight end in Mike Roberts. In college at Toledo he was a noted touchdown hog, but rookie tight ends usually struggle their first season or two. Ebron should get over 100 targets this year and has the upside to be a top-10 fantasy tight end in 2017. He's going off the board at TE14 (12.08) right now in 12-team PPR leagues.

Steelers | Sammie Coates healing up    Thu Jun 22, 11:54 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Sammie Coates (groin) said he has spent the last month making sure his 'body is back to normal' following offseason groin surgery.

Footballguys view: Coates is going to compete with rookie JuJu Smith-Schuster for the no3 wide receiver position in Pittsburgh behind Antonio Brown and Martavis Bryant. We like the rookie (Smith-Schuster) more in this battle. Coates is fast and can get downfield in the blink of an eye, but he's had problems with drops since he started catching (or dropping) footballs and he's been banged up. Dynasty owners should be able to score him on the cheap if you believe he'll ever play up to his potential.

Eagles | Nelson Agholor making an impact    Thu Jun 22, 11:38 PM

Philadelphia Eagles WR Nelson Agholor has been a star during spring practices, according to receivers coach Mike Groh. 'He had a really productive spring,' Groh said. 'He attacked the spring. He's shown up and made an impact at virtually every practice. Really excited about where he's at right now.'

Footballguys view: With Jordan Matthews (knee) banged up in minicamp it was Agholor starting in the slot for the Eagles. There has been a steady drumbeat about Agholor looking better this offseason, and those reports have certainly got our attention from a dynasty standpoint.

49ers | Cole Hikutini eyeing roster spot and more    Thu Jun 22, 10:46 PM

San Francisco 49ers TE Cole Hikutini has a legitimate chance to make the 53-man roster, according to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee, and Barrows believes Hikutini could climb up the depth chart if his knee is fully healthy.

Footballguys view: Undrafted out of Louisville in 2017, Hikutini was a safety-valve receiver for star quarterback Lamar Jackson in college. Hikutini is a move tight end with the 'my ball' mentality and athleticism that makes him stand out. He's not a blocker, so his role will have to be limited to certain situations. Pick him up in super deep dynasty leagues and watch him develop.

Cowboys | Ezekiel Elliott to catch more passes?    Thu Jun 22, 10:36 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott will 'absolutely' be used more in the passing game this season, according to running backs coach Gary Brown.

Footballguys view: This report is music to the ears of Elliott's fantasy owners. Elliott was second in rushing/receiving yards last year with 1,994 yards -- but most of it was done on the ground (1,631 yards). Going over 2,000 combined yards seems like a given, and getting used more as a receiver could make him the top fantasy player to own in 2017. His 11.34 yards per catch ranked 2nd in the NFL last year (1st was Spencer Ware, 13.55) for running backs.

Titans | Tajae Sharpe the odd man out?    Thu Jun 22, 09:21 PM

Tennessee Titans WR Tajae Sharpe (foot) is going to have a 'hard time' being in shape for the start of training camp because of his foot injury, according to head coach Mike Mularkey, but Mularkey said Sharpe will have a chance to compete for a role in the offense.

Footballguys view: Things change pretty quickly around here. Sharpe started last year as a rookie and hauled in 41 passes for the Titans. This year, Sharpe has a tenuous hold on his roster spot. He's not going to be a fantasy factor behind Corey Davis, Rishard Matthews, Eric Decker and Taywan Taylor.

Steelers | Xavier Grimble could 'make a run' at starting job    Thu Jun 22, 08:04 PM

Bob Labriola, of, believes Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Xavier Grimble could 'make a run' at the starting job in training camp this year. While Grimble has flashed the ability to be special, Labriola cautions that the young tight end must get more consistent if he's going to beat out Jesse James for the top spot on the depth chart.

Footballguys view: With all the weapons in Pittsburgh, we don't expect big production from the tight end position. Both players have intriguing upside but unless looking to take a flier on someone, this isn't a team we'd go to for a fantasy tight end.

Ravens | More 3-WR sets for Baltimore in 2017?    Thu Jun 22, 07:56 PM

Jeff Zrebeic, from the Baltimore Sun, believes the Baltimore Ravens are going to use more three-wide receiver sets in 2017. They used such formations on 58 percent of the offensive snaps in 2016, a mark that should increase this season. Joe Flacco ranked 11th in the NFL with 429 passing attempts with three or more wide receivers on the field last year. New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning led the league with 580 passing attempts in such personnel packages.

Footballguys view: This would be good news for Flacco's numbers, but could water down the production for the receivers. Mind you, this rhetoric could just be stemming from the fact that the Ravens don't really know how their receivers will shake out. Jeremy Maclin and Mike Wallace could both do really well, and Breshad Perriman has intriguing speed on the outside if healthy. We need to watch this very closely throughout the summer and preseason. We think Wallace and Maclin have a lot of value but Perriman could be good enough to throw all three receivers into inconsistent chaos.

Colts | Chester Rogers challenging for serious playing time    Thu Jun 22, 07:53 PM

Kevin Bowen, of, reports Indianapolis Colts WR Chester Rogers is challenging for serious playing time in 2017. According to the report, Rogers has a 'real shot' at winning the no3 job at wide receiver behind T.Y. Hilton and Donte Moncrief.

Footballguys view: It's definitely way too early to start talking about this, and third wide receiver isn't particularly a lucrative and high-producing fantasy option. The Colts have TE Jack Doyle as the likely third option in the passing game, limiting the value of Rogers, Kamar Aiken or Philip Dorsett. We'll watch this, but we're not terribly excited. Yet.

Seahawks | Equal share of carries between Eddie Lacy and Thomas Rawls?    Thu Jun 22, 07:49 PM

Bob Condotta, from the Seattle Times, speculates that the Seattle Seahawks could give Eddie Lacy and Thomas Rawls a fairly equal share of the basedown carries in 2017. Health and productivity (plus he brings up the dreaded 'hot hand' approach) should be the primary factors in how carries are split between the two.

Footballguys view: If Lacy is healthy and not overweight, we think he'll get the bulk of the carries. However, Rawls is a player who could see some snaps if Lacy falters. There is absolutely cause for concern with these players. And let's not forget C.J. Prosise could take a lot of third-down snaps.

Steelers | Sammie Coates 'getting there' with health    Thu Jun 22, 07:44 PM

Jeremy Fowler, of, reports Pittsburgh Steelers WR Sammie Coates has feverishly worked to get his body back in shape for training camp after offseason groin surgery. "I'm getting there. It's a process," Coates said. "That's what this process is for, to get your body back so you can compete during camp."

Footballguys view: With Martavis Bryant and JuJu Smith-Schuster fighting for targets behind Antonio Brown, it seems like Coates is going to have a hard time finding passes thrown his way.

Chiefs | John Dorsey no longer general manager     Thu Jun 22, 04:30 PM

Kansas City Chiefs general manager John Dorsey was relieved of his duties Thursday, June 22.

Footballguys view: This is a bit shocking. Given that it seemed like the Chiefs were making very specific moves (dumping WR Jeremy Maclin, moving up to draft QB Patrick Mahomes), it made sense to think the front office was stable. Clearly something was going on, and perhaps Andy Reid was the one in the driver's seat. It will be interesting to see who the new general manager is.

Saints | Ryan Ramczyk signs contract    Thu Jun 22, 04:23 PM

New Orleans Saints OT Ryan Ramczyk signed his four-year rookie deal Thursday, June 22. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The rookie from Wisconsin had a roundabout path to the NFL which included four stops in college. He's athletic and technically sound, and the potential for him to be a quality starter is there. Ramczyk is still recovering from hip surgery but he's a candidate to replace Terron Armstead (labrum) as the starting left tackle. Armstead has a 4-6 month recovery timetable.

Chiefs | Andy Reid signs extension    Thu Jun 22, 03:43 PM

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid signed a contract extension Thursday, June 22. Details of the extension were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs have been to the playoffs in three of the four years Reid has been their coach. He sports a 43-21 record overall in four seasons. With rookie QB Patrick Mahomes set to take over for Alex Smith in the future (near future?), we should see the Chiefs have a more exciting and downfield passing attack with Reid calling the shots.

Cardinals | Haason Reddick should start right away    Thu Jun 22, 03:31 PM

Arizona Cardinals rookie LB Haason Reddick is expected to start immediately over injured LB Deone Bucannon (ankle), according to Darren Urban of

Footballguys view: Reddick can start right away and he can make an instant impact. In college at Temple, Reddick constantly made plays on the other side of the line of scrimmage. He's a bit undersized at 6'1" 237 pounds but he has great athleticism, burst and a knack for pressuring the quarterback.

Giants | Does Eli Manning have plenty of gas in tank?    Thu Jun 22, 01:48 PM

New York Giants QB Eli Manning still has many years to play in the NFL, in the opinion of owner John Mara.

Footballguys view: It would be fascinating to know what GM Jerry Reese and coach Ben McAdoo think about the 'gas gauge' for Manning. Some of the moves they have made this offseason seem more bent on capitalizing on winning now, with an eye beyond Manning. Certainly the addition of rookie QB Davis Webb has given people the impression the Giants are thinking of a few years down the line. Short term, the Giants added WR Brandon Marshall and rookie TE Evan Engram, both weapons which will help Manning immensely. Early drafts seem undecided on Manning's real value, and his ADP is at 108 overall -- the No. 16 quarterback coming off the board.

Raiders | Derek Carr fully guaranteed $40 million    Thu Jun 22, 11:53 AM

Updating earlier reports, Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr is fully guaranteed $40 million and has more than $70 million in total guarantees. He's under contract through 2022.

Footballguys view: Well, we all know the chances of reaching that 2022 finish line are scant, as teams and players tend to renegotiate before the end of a contract. Hence the large amount of guaranteed dollars. Carr continues to improve his game and if he is back 100% healthy as we expect, you can bet he'll be a great option for Fantasy GMs this season.

  Bears | Ka'Deem Carey not a lock    Thu Jun 22, 10:30 AM

Chicago Bears RB Ka'Deem Carey isn't a lock to make the final roster, and he'll have to improve on special teams to enhance his chances of making the team.

Footballguys view: This isn't a shock considering how few and far between his carries were in 2016. It's Carey's final year on his rookie deal and with Jordan Howard the main back, there's a good chance Carey won't see that play out.

Bears | Markus Wheaton has good chance to start    Thu Jun 22, 10:22 AM

Chicago Bears WR Markus Wheaton likely has a good chance to start on the outside for the team. The Pittsburgh Steelers used Wheaton in the slot, but he wasn't nearly as productive as he was on the outside.

Footballguys view: We're not sure if it really will make much of a difference where he lines up with the Bears. Wheaton was underwhelming with one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL throwing him the ball when Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger was tossing him passes. He is unlikely to see an equivalent level of play out of either Mike Glennon or rookie Mitchell Trubisky, so we're not sold that he finally reaches his potential in Chicago.

Raiders | Derek Carr agrees to extension    Thu Jun 22, 10:22 AM

Updating an earlier report, Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr agreed to a five-year, $125 million extension Thursday, June 22, according to sources. The deal makes him the highest-paid player in team history.

Footballguys view: Well, they say if you like it then you'd better put a ring on it. This is the NFL equivalent and is a no-brainer for Oakland-soon-to-be-Las Vegas. Groan-inducing Dad-Jokes aside, Carr is the best player this team has had in a long time and a clear difference-maker. He will be that for your fantasy team too, and is currently going as the No. 8 quarterback off the board with an overall ADP of 72 in early drafting. With Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree to throw to and Marshawn Lynch running the ball, this could be a very potent offense again this year.

Raiders | Derek Carr deal near completion    Thu Jun 22, 08:29 AM

Updating previous reports, Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr has a deal in place with the Raiders, and only language remains. It could be finalized this week. Carr could choose to backload the deal because there is no state tax in Nevada and California's tax rate is 13.3 percent. Doing so would save him millions.

Footballguys view: This makes all the sense in the world and is a sane, smart move by the franchise. The backloading of the deal is fascinating for those of you who like finance, but the bottom line is this: Carr is one of the top young quarterbacks in the NFL, and you don't let a guy like that leave.
