Saints | Benjamin Watson misses practice Wed Jan 16, 08:51 PM
New Orleans Saints TE Benjamin Watson (illness) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Jan. 16.
|Footballguys view: Watson might be able to practice later in the week. He's far down the pecking order in the Saints passing game, so we're not expecting much even if he is cleared to play against the Rams on Sunday.|

Broncos | Denver brings on Rich Scangarello Wed Jan 16, 06:57 PM
Updating a previous report, former San Francisco 49ers quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello was hired by the Denver Broncos Wednesday, Jan. 16as their new offensive coordinator, according to a source. Scangarello will call the plays.
|Footballguys view: Scangarello has a background as a quarterback coach, but should still be committed to the run. He discovered Nick Mullens while he was on the 49ers staff, so the Broncos could pursue Mullens in a trade. He was a Kyle Shanahan disciple before he worked for Shanahan in San Francisco, having worked under him in Atlanta previously. He also modeled his offense after Shanahan's while he was a college offensive coordinator.|
Jaguars | More changes for Jacksonville's coaching staff Wed Jan 16, 06:22 PM
Additionally, former Buffalo Bills wide receivers coach Terry Robiskie was hired as the running backs coach, former Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive line coach George Warhop was hired for the same position, Jason Rebrovich was promoted to defensive line coach, former Arizona Cardinals assistant coach David Merritt was named assistant defensive line coach, former New York Giants defensive backs coach Tim Walton was named secondary/cornerbacks coach and Jaguars assistant coach Joe Danna was named secondary/safeties coach. Furthermore, assistant coach John Donovan was promoted to assistant running backs coach and assistant coach Scott Milanovich was retained as quarterbacks coach.
|Footballguys view: Robiskie didn't have much to work with in Buffalo leading a group that was dragged down by Kelvin Benjamin. He has been coaching in the league since 1982 and was actually Oakland's assistant running backs coach from 1985-87, which was the last time he coached that position.|
Jaguars | John DeFilippo officially with Jaguars Wed Jan 16, 06:11 PM
Updating a previous report, former Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator John DeFilippo was officially hired by the Jacksonville Jaguars Wednesday, Jan. 16, as their new offensive coordinator.
|Footballguys view: DeFilippo was considered a head coach candidate not that long ago. He was part of the smashing success story in Philadelphia in 2017, but didn't make it through his first season in Minnesota. The Jaguars offense has nowhere to go but up, but DeFilippo might be constrained by some of the run-first mentality that he clashed with during his time on the Vikings staff.|
Patriots | Wednesday injury report for Patriots Wed Jan 16, 05:52 PM
New England Patriots DL Deatrich Wise Jr. (ankle) was a full practice participant Wednesday, Jan. 16.
|Footballguys view: Wise should be back this week after missing the win over the Chargers. He'll bolster a pass rush that will be intent on containing Patrick Mahomes and keeping him in the pocket.|
Chiefs | Kansas City's Wednesday injury report Wed Jan 16, 05:50 PM
Kansas City Chiefs LB Dorian O'Daniel (ankle) did not practice Wednesday, Jan. 16. OT Laurent Duvernay-Tardif (ankle) was limited. SS Eric Berry (heel), CB Kendall Fuller (thumb, shoulder), LB Anthony Hitchens (knee), SS Jordan Lucas (shoulder) and OG Andrew Wylie (biceps) participated fully.
|Footballguys view: Another week of Eric Berry watch as the scenario the Chiefs kept him on the active roster for as unfolded, but he was not able to play last week.|

Chiefs | Sammy Watkins has full practice Wed Jan 16, 05:40 PM
Kansas City Chiefs WR Sammy Watkins (foot) was a full practice participant Wednesday, Jan. 16.
|Footballguys view: Watkins was productive and emerged from the divisional round win with no setbacks. If he can get through the playoff season without any problems it will calm some of the fears about his long term outlook now that he has suffered yet another foot injury.|

Chiefs | Tyreek Hill fully practices Wed Jan 16, 05:36 PM
Kansas City Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill (thigh, heel) participated fully in practice Wednesday, Jan. 16.
|Footballguys view: Hill may have a couple of ailments but he's good to go for the AFC Championship Game against the Patriots.|

Rams | Todd Gurley will be limited this week Wed Jan 16, 04:56 PM
Los Angeles Rams RB Todd Gurley (knee) will be limited in practice all week despite his knee being fine, according to head coach Sean McVay.
|Footballguys view: No surprise here. The Rams went ahead and split carries between Gurley and C.J. Anderson in the Divisional Round. This Sunday against the Saints, we expect them to follow a similar plan.|

Lions | Detroit adds Darrell Bevell as OC Wed Jan 16, 04:08 PM
Former Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell was hired by the Detroit Lions Wednesday, Jan. 16, as their new offensive coordinator.
|Footballguys view: Bevell interviewed for a few jobs out there but lands with the Lions. He's going to try and get more out of Matthew Stafford and company this year. Bevell loves to run the ball and that should be the emphasis for the Lions offense under his watch. That's potentially good news for Kerryon Johnson.|
Buccaneers | Gerald McCoy done in Tampa Bay? Wed Jan 16, 03:54 PM
Tampa Bay Buccaneers DT Gerald McCoy has a 'real chance' of being released this offseason, according to ESPN.com's Jenna Laine.
|Footballguys view: It would be a shame to see him move on but this is the nature of the NFL, especially at an advanced age and increased contract. McCoy was a first-round pick for the Bucs back in the 2010 NFL draft. He is due $13 million in 2019 and the Buccaneers are $16.5 million under the salary cap.|

Jaguars | Jacksonville could pursue Nick Foles Wed Jan 16, 03:00 PM
Philadelphia Eagles QB Nick Foles is expected to be of interest to the Jacksonville Jaguars this offseason.
|Footballguys view: This moves makes a lot of sense for both sides. First, they need to find an upgrade over Blake Bortles which Foles could provide. Second, Jaguars new offensive coordinator John DeFilippo is already familiar and connected with Foles as he served as the Eagles offensive coordinator from 2016 to 2017.|

Steelers | Ryan Shazier to continue rehab Wed Jan 16, 02:40 PM
Pittsburgh Steelers LB Ryan Shazier (back) will maintain his rehabilitation in hopes of playing football again, according to team owner Art Rooney.
|Footballguys view: Shazier is scheduled to become a free agent this offseason, but Rooney said he is open to re-signing the linebacker. Shazier has been working hard to get back to the football field and should sign for a veteran minimum type of deal.|

Jets | More on Gregg Williams Wed Jan 16, 11:48 AM
Updating previous reports, New York Jets defensive coordinator Gregg Williams agreed to a three-year deal, but financial terms weren't disclosed.
|Footballguys view: Williams gets some time to prove himself as the Jets defensive coordinator...and to prove whether or not he can get along with new Jets head coach Adam Gase.|
Broncos | Rich Scangarello nearing deal with Denver Wed Jan 16, 11:05 AM
San Francisco 49ers quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello is meeting with the Denver Broncos again Wednesday, Jan. 16, and barring a snag in talks, he's expected to be named the offensive coordinator.
|Footballguys view: Scangerello came up under Kyle Shanahan, so the return of a Shanahan-type system to Denver won't be foreign to Broncos fans. He's unproven as a playcaller and might lean on new Broncos OL coach (and former head coach) Mike Munchak. Scangarello will work to get the most out of the offense while new Broncos head coach Vic Fangio should make the defense quite intimidating. The hire of Scangarello has to be seen as good news for both Phillip Lindsay and Royce Freeman as the Broncos should have a run-first/run-heavy offense.|

Bills | Lorenzo Alexander extended Wed Jan 16, 10:25 AM
Buffalo Bills LB Lorenzo Alexander signed a one-year contract extension Wednesday, Jan. 16. Financial terms weren't disclosed.
|Footballguys view: Alexander has had a remarkable (and unexpected by most) surge to his career over the last three seasons with the Bills. At age 35, Alexander finished his 2018 season with 55 solo tackles, 6.5 sacks and two interceptions. So long as he stays healthy, Alexander is a fine asset for the Bills defense and special teams.|

Saints | Sheldon Rankins to IR Wed Jan 16, 12:28 AM
New Orleans Saints DT Sheldon Rankins (Achilles') was placed on the Reserve/Injured list on Tuesday, Jan. 15.
|Footballguys view: A terrible injury and bad timing for Rankins. This late in the season, Rankins is no lock to begin the 2019 regular season healthy. If there are any delays in his recovery, Rankins might have to begin the 2019 season on the PUP list. We'll know more about his progress as the year goes on.|

Atlanta Falcons DE Takk McKinley (personal) was involved in a 'situation' that 'could be related to mental-health issues' after he was reportedly detained by police in Los Angeles on Tuesday, Jan. 15.'We were recently made aware of the situation involving Takk in Los Angeles earlier today. Any time a situation occurs that is or could be related to mental-health issues we take it very seriously,' head coach Dan Quinn said in a statement.

Panthers | Cam Newton in danger of missing 2019? Tue Jan 15, 08:19 PM
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) is not guaranteed to play at all in 2019 as the team considers all of its options regarding his injured shoulder. Per ESPN.com's David Newton, the organization has been in discussions with medical personnel on the best plan to strengthen the shoulder - whether that's with rest or another surgery.
|Footballguys view: Keep an eye on this situation closely as the offseason rolls along. A surgery opens the possibility Newton could miss a season - just as Andrew Luck did in 2017 - after undergoing surgery on his throwing shoulder.|

Broncos | Ed Donatell back in Denver Tue Jan 15, 07:59 PM
Former Chicago Bears defensive backs coach Ed Donatell has been hired by the Denver Broncos Tuesday, Jan. 15, as their new defensive coordinator.
|Footballguys view: Donatell follows new Broncos head coach Vic Fangio to the Mile High City. He coached with the Broncos before, back in 2010 as the DBs coach. Now, Donatell runs the whole defense...something he's done before, most recently with Washington back in 2009. Fangio should be the defensive playcaller.|

Jaguars | Alex McGough joins Jaguars Tue Jan 15, 06:23 PM
Free-agent QB Alex McGough (Seahawks) was signed to a Reserve/Futures deal by the Jacksonville Jaguars Tuesday, Jan. 15.
|Footballguys view: McGough is an interesting prospect to monitor in dynasty leagues. A seventh-round pick of the Seahawks in 2018, McGough might have an opportunity to impress with the Jaguars due to their dire quarterback situation. McGough did draw the praise of Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll in the preseason.|

Panthers | Surgery for Cam Newton? Tue Jan 15, 05:46 PM
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton's (shoulder) offseason recovery remains unclear as team owner David Tepper admitted he has 'no idea' if Newton will have surgery.
|Footballguys view: Newton is going to try and rest the shoulder to get back to full strength...or at least as close to full strength as he can. He's had shoulder surgery before and needs to be healthy in order to perform at his best. We give him a ton of credit for his toughness, but playing with this shoulder injury has not lead to the best production (or wins) for the veteran quarterback.|

Saints | Michael Thomas a postseason fiend Tue Jan 15, 05:13 PM
New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas is just the fourth player since 1970 to achieve multiple playoff games with at least 130 receiving yards.

Chiefs | Travis Kelce in elite company Tue Jan 15, 05:07 PM
Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce is just the fifth tight end since 1999 to achieve multiple 100-yard playoff games.
|Footballguys view: Kelce is already an elite tight end, but now the Chiefs are winning in the postseason with a chance to go to the Super Bowl. He should be a big part of what they do if they make it past the Patriots in the AFC Championship Game.|

Bengals | Tyler Boyd nearing full strength Tue Jan 15, 02:59 PM
Cincinnati Bengals WR Tyler Boyd (knee) is about two weeks away from being fully recovered from his sprained medial collateral ligament.
|Footballguys view: Good news for Boyd here. This means that he should be able to participate in OTAs later this spring. Boyd played in 14 games this year, finishing with a career high in catches (76), receiving yards (1,028) and receiving touchdowns (7). He's a low-end WR2 or WR3/flex play for Fantasy GMs going forward.|

Jets | Gregg Williams joining Jets Tue Jan 15, 02:42 PM
Former Cleveland Browns interim head coach Gregg Williams is finalizing a deal to become the next defensive coordinator of the New York Jets, according to a source. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Eagles | Nick Foles a Philly favorite Tue Jan 15, 01:14 PM
Philadelphia Eagles QB Nick Foles is a player the team would like to have return even though Foles can buy out of the final year of his contract if the Eagles pick up his 2019 option. 'We would love to keep Nick Foles,' Eagles general manager Howie Roseman said Tuesday, Jan. 15, at the team's year-end news conference. 'You talk about a guy we've drafted here and grown incredibly close with. Certainly, as we go into the substance of those discussions, no question ... we'd love to keep him.'
|Footballguys view: It's going to be an interesting offseason for the Eagles due to this Foles situation. Some out there believe they'll be able to tag and trade Foles in an effort to get something for him and not lose him with nothing in return. We'll see what happens with Foles but one thing is clear; the team wants Carson Wentz as their starting quarterback.|

Eagles | Philly GM defends Golden Tate trade Tue Jan 15, 12:24 PM
Philadelphia Eagles WR Golden Tate's trade-deadline acquisition from the Detroit Lions 'no question' worked out the way the Eagles hoped it would, general manager Howie Roseman said Tuesday, Jan. 15.
|Footballguys view: Tate did make some plays with the Eagles here and there but he just didn't seem to fit in as good as he could have. Now he enters free agency in 2019 and it's unlikely the Eagles bring him back. They took a chance and it didn't work out...even though Roseman spun it differently on Tuesday.|

Eagles | Philly going forward with Carson Wentz Tue Jan 15, 12:06 PM
Philadelphia Eagles QB Carson Wentz (back) is the team's 'starting quarterback going forward ,' head coach Doug Pederson said Tuesday, Jan. 16, at the team's season-ending news conference.
|Footballguys view: After Nick Foles led them to the playoffs in 2018, many wondered what the future held for Wentz. It looks like the Eagles are going with Wentz. He hasn't played a full 16-game season since 2016 but when healthy he has the skill to be one of the best in the league at his position. We'll see if the Eagles can trade Foles this offseason.|

Cardinals | Jim Bob Cooter interviewing with Cards Tue Jan 15, 11:55 AM
Former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter is interviewing with the Arizona Cardinals for the same spot Tuesday, Jan. 15.
