Redskins | Meeting with James Casey    Thu Feb 26, 12:17 PM

Free-agent TE James Casey (Eagles) is scheduled to meet with the Washington Redskins.

Footballguys view: Casey is a good all around tight end, but more proficient as a blocker than a pass-catcher. With Niles Paul a free agent and concerns remaining about Jordan Reed and his concussion issues, we could see Washington bringing in some help. There's a good chance Washington brings Paul back first, but Casey would be another solid option.

Bengals | James Casey to visit    Thu Feb 26, 12:17 PM

Free-agent TE James Casey (Eagles) is scheduled to meet with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Footballguys view: Casey is a good all around tight end, but more proficient as a blocker than a pass-catcher. The Bengals could use the extra blocking help but it's not a high priority.

Bills | Buffalo looking to land Josh McCown    Thu Feb 26, 11:06 AM

Free-agent QB Josh McCown (Buccaneers) is having contract negotiations with the Buffalo Bills, but it is not known if the Bills are the leading candidate to sign McCown, according to a source.

Footballguys view: At this point it would seem anything is an upgrade over EJ Manuel, at least in how he plays right now. McCown isn't a long-term answer, but he would be better for Robert Woods and Sammy Watkins fantasy value in 2015.

Cowboys | Dallas afraid to pay Dez Bryant    Thu Feb 26, 08:53 AM

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant is likely to receive the franchise tag because the team is hesitant to sign him long term due to a lack of trust off the field. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport discovered via an open-records request that Bryant was involved in an 'unknown disturbance' in a Walmart parking lot July 11, 2011. Upon further investigation, 'it was determined that there was no offense' and 'all parties were advised they were free to go.' The team has known about this incident for a while. However, Bryant has had the police called to his home six different times since 2011. None of the calls resulted in any arrests.

Footballguys view: We'll have to see how this plays out. They can't let him hit the open market because he won't last half a second, but if there are off-field issues then paying him a big, long-term deal isn't smart either. Staying in Dallas though, we know he will be a top fantasy WR for 2015.

49ers | Interested in Jarryd Hayne     Thu Feb 26, 07:55 AM

Australian rugby player Jarryd Hayne is being looked at by the San Francisco 49ers. It was thought the Detroit Lions had a contract with Hayne as a running back, but a deal was not finalized.

Footballguys view: It was reported earlier that Hayne had signed with the Lions, but that's not the case. The Lions are interested, but no deal has been done. Hayne quit rugby last October to focus on his dream of playing in the NFL. At 220 pounds he has the size--and as a former rugby player he certainly has the toughness to play running back.

NFL | Josh McCown to decide by next week    Thu Feb 26, 07:38 AM

Free-agent QB Josh McCown (Buccaneers) is expected to decide on a new team by early next week. The Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns are considered strong suitors.

Footballguys view: Neither team is getting him a Super Bowl ring in 2015. We'd pick Buffalo ourselves since they have things like wide receivers. Crazy notion, we know. However, McCown would be a decent holdover in either situation as neither Cleveland nor Buffalo is settled under center.

Falcons | Bear Pascoe moving on    Thu Feb 26, 07:33 AM

Free-agent TE Bear Pascoe (Falcons) is moving on from the Atlanta Falcons and checking out other options, according to Pascoe's agent.

Footballguys view: Teams in need of a behemoth who can block will be looking at the former Rodeo champion. Pascoe isn't much of a receiver, but he has the size and nastiness to be a dominant blocker. A team like the Broncos could have interest.

Lions | George Johnson status resolved    Thu Feb 26, 07:28 AM

Updating a previous report, free-agent DE George Johnson (Lions) is considered a restricted free agent by both the NFL and the NFL Players Association.

Footballguys view: Johnson had played parts of the last five years in the NFL, so his status as a free agent was up in the air. At age 27, Johnson could interest some teams--even as a restricted free agent--depending on his tender level.

Colts | Mike C. Adams wants to stay in Indy    Thu Feb 26, 07:24 AM

Free-agent FS Mike C. Adams (Colts) wants to stay with the Indianapolis Colts, according to a radio interview.

Footballguys view: Adams could generate some interest on the open market because of his Pro Bowl season in 2014 with the Colts. We think the Broncos would consider bringing him back (he played for them in 2012-2013) if they let Rahim Moore leave in free agency. The Colts would be wise to lock up Adams if they can.

Titans | James Casey will visit Tennessee    Thu Feb 26, 07:18 AM

Free-agent TE James Casey (Eagles) has a visit planned with the Tennessee Titans.

Footballguys view: The Titans took a chance on Taylor Thompson in the draft a few years ago, and that hasn't worked out. They have Delanie Walker as their top tight end, but could certainly use depth at the position. Casey is a versatile player who has never played up to his full potential. He'd be a decent backup for the Titans.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer might restructure    Thu Feb 26, 12:57 AM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer might restructure his contract to ease his cap number of $14.5 million for 2015, according to a source. As long as the team does not increase his salary they can redo the deal he just signed during the 2014 season. According to reports, a $9.5 million roster bonus might be converted to a signing bonus.

Footballguys view: Palmer knows time is short and the team has other needs the money can go to. He wants a ring as much as Larry Fitzgerald and will do what he can to help the team get the pieces it needs to contend for a championship. The Cardinals need him as much as he needs them though--so he has some leverage--though we think he won't fight them much on it.

Steelers | Jason Worilds to hit market    Thu Feb 26, 12:16 AM

The Pittsburgh Steelers do not plan to use the transition tag on impending free-agent LB Jason Worilds, allowing him to hit free agency March 10, a league source said Wednesday, Feb. 25.

Footballguys view: Worilds has had 15.5 sacks over the last two seasons, the most by any Steelers player during that time. The Steelers are in desperate need of clearing up cap space. At this time, they are about $7 million over the cap. The new league year begins on March 10th, and they'll need to get their cap situation lined up before then.

Panthers | Carolina interested in Ted Ginn    Thu Feb 26, 12:13 AM

The Carolina Panthers are interested in free-agent WR Ted Ginn Jr. (Cardinals).

Footballguys view: According to a league source, the Panthers plan to reach out to Ginn, who spent the 2013 season with the team. Ginn isn't much help as a receiver, but he could still be used effectively as a return man. However, in 2013 Ginn caught a career-high five touchdown passes.

Dolphins | Miami shopping Mike Wallace    Wed Feb 25, 09:59 PM

The Miami Dolphins do not plan to cut WR Mike Wallace just yet. They are exploring the trade route not just on Wallace's play, but also his fit in the locker room. He removed himself from the regular season finale, and had a shouting match with head coach Joe Philbin afterwards. Wallace is due $9.85 million in 2015, part of a five-year, $60 million deal that runs through 2017.

Footballguys view: What in the world could they get in return for Wallace? He's speedy, but Wallace has failed to transform into a true WR1--even though he's making WR1 money. We have a feeling they'll work out a re-worked contract with him before they trade him.

Broncos | Peyton Manning to have deal revised?    Wed Feb 25, 09:12 PM

The Denver Broncos and representatives for QB Peyton Manning are working on revising the veteran's contract, according to multiple league sources. He is scheduled to draw a $19 million salary in 2015 and 2016. Manning has informed the team he intends to keep playing, and the Broncos did not formally interview any quarterbacks at the NFL Combine last week.

Footballguys view: The two sides just need to come to an agreement about how his deal will be re-worked. Manning and the Broncos should be able to find common ground in the next few days. A simple restructure could save the Broncos $9 million in cap space this season. That's great for them with guys like Demaryius Thomas, Julius Thomas and Terrance Knighton set to hit free agency.

Bears | Demontre Hurst signs    Wed Feb 25, 06:02 PM

The Chicago Bears signed CB Demontre Hurst to a two-year contract Wednesday, Feb. 25. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Hurst was an ERFA (exclusive rights free agent) for the Bears. This essentially meant the only team he could negotiate with was Chicago. He started two games in the nickel last year and finished the season with one interception and 30 tackles.

Chargers | Jarret Johnson officially cut    Wed Feb 25, 05:33 PM

San Diego Chargers LB Jarret Johnson was officially released Wednesday, Feb. 25, following his retirement.

Footballguys view: This is merely a technicality. Johnson has decided to retire, and that save the Chargers $5 million in cap space.

Lions | Reggie Bush released    Wed Feb 25, 05:22 PM

Detroit Lions RB Reggie Bush has been cut Wednesday, Feb. 25.

Footballguys view: The rich free agent market for running backs just got another good player in the mix. Bush battled through 11 games as injuries held him back in 2014. The Lions will now save $1.7 million with this move. Bush is not what he once was, but there should be more than a few teams interested in the veteran change-of-pace back.

Panthers | Michael Oher visits    Wed Feb 25, 04:48 PM

Free-agent OT Michael Oher (Titans) recently visited with the Carolina Panthers, according to The Baltimore Sun's Aaron Wilson. The Panthers are looking to replace impending free-agent OT Byron Bell, who won't be re-signed at left tackle.

Footballguys view: The Panthers need OL help, but signing Oher would be a sign of desperation. He's not a left tackle, and he's also struggled mightily at right tackle. "The Blind Side" is a good movie, but Oher is not a good tackle.

Texans | Ryan Mallett recovering from surgery    Wed Feb 25, 04:43 PM

Houston Texans impending free-agent QB Ryan Mallett (pectoral) is recovering from surgery on a torn pectoral muscle. Mallett said he's already thrown a football and that the recovery process is day-by-day.

Footballguys view: We could see Mallett returning to the Texans in 2015. He barely got to start for them last year before injuring his pectoral muscle. He's the strong-armed pocket passer that head coach Bill O'Brien likes, and his main competition for the starting job will be second-year QB Tom Savage.

Packers | A.J. Hawk released    Wed Feb 25, 04:39 PM

Green Bay Packers LB A.J. Hawk was released Wednesday, Feb. 25.

Footballguys view: No surprise here given Hawk's price tag and his recent play. The move will save them $3.5 million against the salary cap in 2015. We could see a team like the Chiefs or the Broncos interested in the veteran inside linebacker even though he's not the player he used to be.

Colts | Ahmad Bradshaw's trial rescheduled    Wed Feb 25, 04:24 PM

Indianapolis Colts impending free-agent RB Ahmad Bradshaw's pretrial conference has been rescheduled to April 8 as authorities await crime lab results.

Footballguys view: Bradshaw pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor charge for allegedly possessing marijuana when he was pulled over on an Ohio interstate earlier this month.

Raiders | Maurice Jones-Drew on the bubble?    Wed Feb 25, 04:17 PM

Oakland Raiders RB Maurice Jones-Drew could be on his way out of Oakland after a disappointing 2014 campaign. The veteran running back played in 12 games and averaged just 2.2 yards on 43 carries.

Footballguys view: Of course Jones-Drew is on the bubble. We could see the team go in a different direction (Reggie Bush?) as Jones-Drew isn't the player he used to be.

Texans | Ryan Mallett wants to stay with HOU    Wed Feb 25, 04:12 PM

Houston Texans impending free-agent QB Ryan Mallett said he'd like stay with the Texans and hopes both parties can get a new contract worked out.

Footballguys view: We think the Texans go ahead and keep him around after trading a late-round pick for his services last year. Mallett is recovering from surgery on a torn muscle in his pectoral.

Cardinals | Damond Smith signs    Wed Feb 25, 04:01 PM

Free-agent CB Damond Smith (Chiefs) signed with the Arizona Cardinals Wednesday, Feb. 25, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Smith went undrafted in the 2013 Supplemental Draft, but he was able to find a home with the Chiefs. The Cardinals are getting a smaller corner (5'11") with 4.4 speed and decent instincts.

Dolphins | Three Miami receivers could be cut    Wed Feb 25, 03:39 PM

Miami Dolphins WRs Mike Wallace, Brian Hartline and Brandon Gibson could all be let go this offseason if contracts aren't restructured. Wallace, especially, likely won't take a paycut on the $9.85 million he's due next season. Hartline is due $5.9 million but could restructure this offseason. Gibson isn't believed to be worth the $3.225 million he's due, so he could also be gone.

Footballguys view: They couldn't cut all three could they? We don't think that happens, but they're likely to take a look at restructuring all three of these receivers. Wallace has been the biggest disappointment here (with the biggest price tag).

NFL | Ali Marpet performs well at combine    Wed Feb 25, 02:42 PM

Hobart OT Ali Marpet posted fastest 40-yard dash among offensive lineman at the NFL scouting combine, running it in 4.98 seconds. He finished in the top five among offensive linemen in the bench press (30 repetitions), the three-cone drill (7.33 seconds) and the 20-yard shuttle (4.47 seconds).

Footballguys view: Marpet is a small-school prospect who has drawn the attention of scouts. This isn't a great center or guard class, but Marpet could be one of the best. He's a Division III standout with good lateral agility and the ability to be a "sticky blocker" at the second level of the defense.

Jets | New York still committed to Geno Smith    Wed Feb 25, 01:59 PM

New York Jets QB Geno Smith may not have big competition for the starting quarterback job, because the team is not committed to selecting a quarterback with the sixth overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. The Jets are committed to make Smith a successful starting quarterback.

Footballguys view: The Jets could pass on Marcus Mariota (Oregon) if he's on the board at the time they are on the clock at sixth overall. Smith finished the season strong with a 300-yard game against the Dolphins in Week 17. The team might be willing to see if he can carry over that momentum.

Browns | Ted Ginn an option for Cleveland    Wed Feb 25, 01:52 PM

Free-agent WR Ted Ginn Jr. (Cardinals) is receiving interest from the Cleveland Browns, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Browns won't use Ginn much as a receiver, but they could certainly be interested in him as a return man.

NFL | J.J. Nelson posts fastest 40 time    Wed Feb 25, 12:38 PM

Alabama-Birmingham WR J.J. Nelson ran the 40-yard dash in 4.28 seconds at the NFL scouting combine, which was the fastest time among all of the prospects.

Footballguys view: Awesome. It would be even better if he didn't weight 150 pounds. Teams are concerned about players in the 170s....so Nelson might get a camp invite, but we can't imagine teams falling all over themselves for such a small (yet explosive) player.

Ravens | Jacoby Jones released    Wed Feb 25, 12:31 PM

Baltimore Ravens WR Jacoby Jones was released Wednesday, Feb. 25.

Footballguys view: Things change pretty quick around here. Just last March, Jones signed a four-year deal with the Ravens with $4.5 million guaranteed...now he's looking for a job. Teams should be interested in him, mainly because of his ability as a return man.

  49ers | Ricky Jean-Francois to visit    Wed Feb 25, 12:07 PM

Free-agent DT Ricky Jean-Francois (Colts) is scheduled to meet with the San Francisco 49ers this week, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The 49ers interest makes a ton of sense. Jean-Francois played under new head coach Jim Tomsula when he was with the team from 2009-2012. The 49ers need a backup plan in case Justin Smith decides to retire.

Redskins | Meeting with Ricky Jean-Francois    Wed Feb 25, 12:07 PM

Free-agent DT Ricky Jean-Francois (Colts) is scheduled to meet with the Washington Redskins this week, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Colts made the move to get rid of Jean-Francois in an effort to gain more salary cap space. He could still be an effective player for the right team. Washington could use Jean-Francois at left end because they're expected to lose Jarvis Jenkins in free agency.

Giants | Peyton Hillis released    Wed Feb 25, 10:34 AM

New York Giants RB Peyton Hillis was released Wednesday, Feb. 25. The move saves $945,000 on the 2015 salary cap.

Footballguys view: Hillis has had each of the last two seasons of his pro career ended by concussions. He hasn't been the same player (thanks Madden!) since rushing for over 1,000 yards with the Browns in 2010. Hillis may not get that much interest in a strong RB draft and free agent class.

Browns | James Casey to visit Cleveland    Wed Feb 25, 10:32 AM

Free-agent TE James Casey (Eagles) will visit the Cleveland Browns Wednesday, Feb. 25.

Ravens | Owen Daniels wants to return to BAL    Wed Feb 25, 07:36 AM

Free-agent TE Owen Daniels (Ravens) has expressed interest in returning to the Baltimore Ravens, according to head coach John Harbaugh.

Footballguys view: Many think Daniels will follow Gary Kubiak (again) to Denver. He could stick around in Baltimore as the future for Dennis Pitta (hip) is up in the air. We can't imagine Daniels getting a ton of money on the open market.

Jets | Interest in Byron Maxwell    Wed Feb 25, 07:30 AM

Free-agent CB Byron Maxwell (Seahawks) is expected to have the New York Jets among the primary teams interested in him.

Raiders | OAK may make run at Randall Cobb    Wed Feb 25, 07:24 AM

Free-agent WR Randall Cobb (Packers) may be targeted by the Oakland Raiders if he reaches free agency.

Footballguys view: The Raiders have a ton of money to spend in free agency, and we're expecting them to make a run at several big players. Cobb would be a great fit in the offense, and he'd give Derek Carr a quality target.

Chargers | Relocation not bothering Philip Rivers    Wed Feb 25, 07:19 AM

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers is not letting recent talk about the team leaving San Diego influence him about re-signing. 'Is the location of this team going to be a deciding factor?' Rivers said in a radio station interview. 'I can't honestly tell you that it will be.'

Footballguys view: We'll see Rivers get an extension with the Chargers in the near future. He's had a career resurgence under head coach Mike McCoy. It wouldn't surprise us to see him get a deal that keeps him with the Chargers for the rest of his career.

Dolphins | Brian Hartline costly in 2015    Wed Feb 25, 02:02 AM

Miami Dolphins WR Brian Hartline has not been informed of his status for 2015, but he has a current cap number of $7.3 million.

Footballguys view: We can't imagine the Dolphins keeping him around at that price tag. Hartline has $4.2 million left in dead money on his contract, so perhaps the team is going to restructure his deal instead of releasing him.
