Panthers | Garrett Gilbert joins Carolina Fri Mar 24, 05:01 PM
Free-agent QB Garrett Gilbert (Raiders) signed a one-year deal with the Carolina Panthers Friday, March 24. Financial terms were not disclosed.
|Footballguys view: Gilbert is a camp arm for the Panthers. He'll be hard pressed to make the 53-man roster behind Cam Newton and Derek Anderson.|

Texans | Houston only option for Tony Romo? Fri Mar 24, 04:53 PM
Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo believes the Houston Texans and retirement are his options next season if he is released by the Cowboys, according to sources. The Denver Broncos are not pursing Romo, but they are not ruling out the possibility of signing him.
|Footballguys view: Both FOX and CBS are pursuing Romo to be an analyst on TV. He'll have some options if and when the Cowboys release him. The Texans seem to be in the driver's seat at the moment.|

NFL | Taco Charlton receiving interest Fri Mar 24, 04:21 PM
Michigan DE Taco Charlton said he met with the New Orleans Saints, Pittsburgh Steelers, Baltimore Ravens and Tennessee Titans Thursday, March 23. He also has visits set up with the Saints, Dallas Cowboys, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Miami Dolphins.
|Footballguys view: Charlton should be a first-round pick in the 2017 NFL draft. He's got the length and burst to get after the QB in a hurry. Charlton has plenty of potential in the pros, and he could make an impact as a rotational player while he learns the pro game as a rookie.|
NFL | Davis Webb told he's a 'first-round talent' Fri Mar 24, 03:53 PM
California QB Davis Webb told Bay Area News Group's Cam Inman that 'double-digit' teams have told him he's a 'first-round talent'.
|Footballguys view: The talent may or may not be there with Webb, but it would be surprising to see him taken in the top round. Webb transferred to Cal from Texas Tech, where he couldn't beat out Patrick Mahomes. While Mahomes seems to be a legitimate first-round option for teams, Webb has only been talked about as a top talent recently. This has a feel like when Tom Savage came out of PITT and was getting "first round talent" labels. Savage ended up as a fourth-round pick.|
49ers | Jacquies Smith visiting San Francisco Fri Mar 24, 03:46 PM
Tampa Bay Buccaneers restricted free-agent DE Jacquies Smith is visiting the San Francisco 49ers, according to a source. Smith, who was tendered at the original round level earlier this month after entering the league as an undrafted free agent, would not fetch the Buccaneers any draft pick compensation should he sign an offer sheet with the 49ers and Tampa Bay choose not to match.Link to story

Bears | Jonathan Allen impressed with Chicago Fri Mar 24, 03:07 PM
Alabama DE Jonathan Allen recently told Sirius XM NFL Radio the Chicago Bears are the only team he has visited so far. Allen went on to say head coach John Fox made a great impression on him.
|Footballguys view: The Bears have the 3rd-overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft, and Allen should be a serious consideration for the pick. He can play outside or end or inside at tackle, and Allen has the ability to rush the passer consistently. Allen could make an instant impact as a pro.|

Jets | Josh McCown not guaranteed starting job Fri Mar 24, 03:00 PM
New York Jets QB Josh McCown has not been assured that he will begin training camp as starter, and it is a decision which will be made by head coach Todd Bowles, according to general manager Mike Maccagnan.
|Footballguys view: The Jets could still add a quarterback via trade or via the 2017 NFL draft. McCown is a 'bridge' QB for the Jets even if he does begin the 2017 season as the starter.|

NFL | Adrian Peterson asked for $8 million? Fri Mar 24, 02:42 PM
Free-agent RB Adrian Peterson (Vikings) reportedly wanted more than $8 million in the first year of any contract he signed during the initial wave of free agency.
|Footballguys view: That's crazy talk. Peterson was once the best RB in the game, but he's not the same player and he's not going to get that type of price tag.|

Browns | Josh Gordon expected to find out fate soon Fri Mar 24, 01:34 PM
Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon is expected to hear back from the league regarding his reinstatement application in late April or early May, according to ESPN's Dan Graziano.
|Footballguys view: Gordon hasn't been on the field since 2014, but he's trying to make his way back. Lord only knows what he'll look like after two years on the sidelines. The Browns are done with him, so if he's reinstated we expect Gordon to be playing elsewhere.|

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin's option to be exercised Fri Mar 24, 12:36 PM
Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin's fifth year option for the 2018 season will be picked up, according to general manager Dave Gettleman.
|Footballguys view: Benjamin didn't look quite like his old self last year after missing all of the 2015 season with a knee injury. The Panthers make the wise move by keeping him under contract through the 2018 season. The way he plays over the next two seasons will determine if/when he gets a long-term contract with the Panthers.|

Packers | GB passing on Adrian Peterson? Fri Mar 24, 12:34 PM
Free-agent RB Adrian Peterson (Vikings) was reportedly close to making a visit with the Green Bay Packers before they decided his initial asking price was too high, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.
|Footballguys view: The Packers need a lead running back, and Peterson would certainly give them that. If the price is too high, then perhaps the price comes down as Peterson is running out of options.|

Colts | Arthur Jones let go Fri Mar 24, 12:23 PM
Indianapolis Colts DT Arthur Jones was released Friday, March 24.
|Footballguys view: In two years with the Colts, Jones missed a lot of time due to injury and suspension. He only had 1.5 sacks during his time in Indy, and there's a question about how much he has left to contribute. Some team may bring him on for a cheap price to work as a rotational player.|

Patriots | Michael Floyd unlikely to return to NE Fri Mar 24, 12:22 PM
Free-agent WR Michael Floyd (Patriots) is a 'long shot' to return to the New England Patriots after they acquired Brandin Cooks earlier this month, according to ESPN's Mike Reiss.
|Footballguys view: The Pats have found their top WR via trade with New Orleans. Floyd has no interest on the open market at this time. Perhaps as we get closer to training camp a team like the Lions would come calling.|

Vikings | Brian Robison extended Fri Mar 24, 12:05 PM

Redskins | Brian Quick to Redskins Fri Mar 24, 10:19 AM
Free-agent WR Brian Quick (Rams) has agreed to terms with the Washington Redskins Friday, March 24. Terms weren't disclosed.
|Footballguys view: Washington lost both Pierre Garcon (49ers) and DeSean Jackson (Buccaneers) in free agency, but they've worked hard to add more talent on the open market. They brought on Terrelle Pryor earlier this year, and he should be their top target in the passing game. Quick will compete for a roster spot and a spot in the pecking order behind Pryor, Jamison Crowder and Josh Doctson.|

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin deadline looming Fri Mar 24, 09:41 AM
Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin has a May 2 deadline for the team to pick up his fifth-year option, which figures to be around $8 million.
|Footballguys view: Even though he missed all of 2015 due to a knee injury, Benjamin is a talent the Panthers need to keep around. Still working through the after effects of his knee injury, Benjamin had a down 2016 season. Expect him to bounce back in a revamped passing attack.|

Browns | Patrick Mahomes worked out for Browns Fri Mar 24, 09:40 AM
Texas Tech QB Patrick Mahomes has worked out for the Cleveland Browns recently.
|Footballguys view: Mahomes is one of the most intriguing prospects in the 2017 NFL draft. He's got extreme confidence in his arm and that gunslinger mentality allows him to make big plays. Mahomes has seen his draft stock rise in recent weeks, and now seems to be a lock for the first round. The Browns might be considering him with the 12th-overall pick.|
Bears | Patrick Mahomes met with Bears Fri Mar 24, 09:38 AM
Texas Tech QB Patrick Mahomes has had dinner with the Chicago Bears' brass recently.
|Footballguys view: Even though the Bears picked up Mike Glennon in free agency, we think they could select a QB with the 3rd overall pick. That may be too high for Mahomes, but the Bears are doing their due diligence on the Red Raiders passer.|
Cardinals | Patrick Mahomes works out for Cardinals Fri Mar 24, 09:35 AM
Texas Tech QB Patrick Mahomes worked out for the Arizona Cardinals Thursday, March 23.
|Footballguys view: The Cardinals need to groom a QB behind Carson Palmer, and Mahomes would make a lot of sense. He's got a gunslinger mentality, and head coach Bruce Arians would love that from his quarterback. Palmer has like a year left (if that), so Mahomes could be in line to start sooner than some think.|
Jets | DeShone Kizer worked out for Jets Fri Mar 24, 09:34 AM
Notre Dame QB DeShone Kizer worked out for the New York Jets recently.
|Footballguys view: Kizer is likely to be a first-round pick in the 2017 NFL draft, but he does have a lot to work on. At 6'4" 233 pounds, Kizer has the size and athleticism you want from a QB in the NFL. However, he's reliant too often on a big arm and not anticipation...plus he tends to lock onto his primary read and may not see/read the field quickly enough.|
Browns | DeShone Kizer met with Browns Fri Mar 24, 09:32 AM
Notre Dame QB DeShone Kizer worked out for the Cleveland Browns recently.
|Footballguys view: The Browns are unlikely to draft him with the first-overall pick. With their 12th-overall pick he becomes an option.|
Chargers | DeShone Kizer working out for Chargers Fri Mar 24, 09:32 AM
Notre Dame QB DeShone Kizer is working out for the Los Angeles Chargers Friday, March 24.
|Footballguys view: The Chargers need a QB to groom behind Philip Rivers, and Kizer could be that guy. He's big, athletic and has a rocket arm....but there's a lot to work on. He's inconsistent with decision making and tends to lock onto his initial read rather than anticipate where other receivers will be in the play. Kizer has tremendous upside, but he's not ready to start in the NFL yet.|
Panthers | Jonathan Stewart extended Fri Mar 24, 09:10 AM
Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart signed a contract extension through the 2018 season Friday, March 24. Stewart had a cap figure of $8.25 million, and the extension was expected to reduce that in 2017.
|Footballguys view: Things change pretty quickly around here. Not that long ago, there was some buzz about Stewart potentially getting released as a post-June 1 cut. Now he returns with an extension, but we're still expecting the Panthers to pick another RB with the 8th-overall pick.|

Bills | Doug Whaley not a long-term fit? Fri Mar 24, 09:04 AM
Buffalo Bills general manager Doug Whaley may not be a long-term fit with head coach Sean McDermott. McDermott already has a growing cache with ownership, and they could bring in vice presidents and/or personnel figures with ties to the coach in the near future.Link to story
Panthers | David Njoku visits Carolina Fri Mar 24, 12:24 AM
Miami (Fla.) TE David Njoku visited the Carolina Panthers Thursday, March 23.
|Footballguys view: His best pro comparison is Greg Olsen, so it makes sense that Njoku would visit with the Panthers. He's likely a first-round pick, so the Panthers shouldn't be considering him at no.8 overall. However, if he falls into the top of the second round the Panthers should pounce.|
Lions | Ricky Wagner not worried about old injury Fri Mar 24, 12:08 AM
Detroit Lions OT Ricky Wagner said he is fully recovered from a foot injury that impacted his performance in 2015.Link to story
Broncos | Denver wants Vance Walker back Thu Mar 23, 11:49 PM
Free-agent DE Vance Walker (Broncos) has talked to the Broncos about re-signing, and head coach Vance Joseph said the two sides will try to 'get something done.'
|Footballguys view: Walker was supposed to be the team's replacement for Malik Jackson last year. A knee injury suffered in training camp cut that off, and the Broncos struggled to stop the run. Getting Walker back at a cheap price makes a lot of sense.|

Buccaneers | Tampa Bay targeting Marlon Mack? Thu Mar 23, 11:08 PM
South Florida RB Marlon Mack has met with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers multiple times, and head coach Dirk Koetter attended Mack's pro day.
|Footballguys view: Mack would work well in the Bucs RBBC. He's not necessarily a back you want to feature unless he learns better discipline as a runner. Mack bounces stuff outside too often and does not consistently run through arm tackles.|
NFL | Marlon Mack's stock rising Thu Mar 23, 11:00 PM
South Florida RB Marlon Mack has met with 25 teams in preparation for the 2017 NFL Draft.
|Footballguys view: Mack is a slippery runner who can make defenders miss in open space. He runs with inconsistent power and too often tries to take runs to the corner store. The propensity to bounce outside when there's not a gaping hole inside will need to be cleaned up at the pro level.|
NFL | Christian McCaffrey shows versatility Thu Mar 23, 10:15 PM
Stanford RB Christian McCaffrey said he wanted to use his pro day to show his ability to run routes from the slot and the outside and do 'anything' on the football field.
|Footballguys view: McCaffrey might be the safest pick in the first round of the 2017 NFL draft. He's got the ability to contribute at a high level at three different positions (runner, receiver, return man). His stock is on the rise because he's a playmaker and can provide instant offense anywhere he lands.|
NFL | JuJu Smith-Schuster confident Thu Mar 23, 10:00 PM
Southern California WR JuJu Smith-Schuster said he is 'the top receiver' in the 2017 NFL Draft following his pro day Thursday, March 23.
|Footballguys view: Slow your roll there, son. We like Smith-Schuster but he needs to clean up his breaks during route running, and doesn't accelerate well out of his cuts. He'll see a lot of contested balls, though luckily for him he thrives on that. He's a big bodied, aggressive receiver, but he's not the top of the class.|

Bears | One-year deal for Mark Sanchez Thu Mar 23, 09:48 PM
Updating a previous report, Chicago Bears QB Mark Sanchez's deal is for one year. Financial terms were not disclosed.
|Footballguys view: Sanchez is no lock for the 53-man roster. He'll serve as a veteran backup behind newly acquired Mike Glennon. Expect the Bears to add a QB via the 2017 NFL draft too....maybe with a premium pick.|
Mark Sanchez player page
NFL | No help for DeShone Kizer? Thu Mar 23, 09:45 PM
Notre Dame QB DeShone Kizer was throwing to 'scrubs' at his pro day Thursday, March 23, according to an NFL scout, and the scout said to ignore any accuracy issues because of the lack of talent around him.
|Footballguys view: Which is the opposite of what we hear from scouts, analysts and GMs about pro days. It's your own receivers, on your own turf, with scripted plays against air. If you can't look good under those conditions, when can you? So go back to the tape if you must, but don't be shocked when the inconsistency shows up there too.|
49ers | San Francisco watching DeShone Kizer Thu Mar 23, 09:39 PM
San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch attended Notre Dame QB DeShone Kizer's pro day Thursday, March 23.
|Footballguys view: The Niners are likely just kicking the tires on all sorts of quarterbacks but we still think Kyle Shanahan wants Kirk Cousins next year. Kizer could go as a developmental project though, but we won't see him early in the draft.|
