Summary

Smith is somewhat of an unsung hero and underappreciated as to how important a role he plays in the 49ers defense. His rare combination of brute strength and agility enables him to stand his ground and control the LOS in the run game as well as tie up blockers on pass plays, which frees up his teammates so the ILBs can make tackles and the OLBs get sacks. When Smith missed two games in 2012, OLB Aldon Smith was negatively impacted and noticeably less productive. Fortunately, he has been remarkably durable. Other than those two games and one missed game as a rookie, he has played 205 of 208 possible regular season games in a 13 season career still going strong. Smith has also been extremely consistent, his 6.5 sacks last season were within 2 sacks of his career high (8.5 sacks twice, in his 2001 rookie season with the Bengals, and in 2010 with the 49ers). Historically a strong tackler for a 3-4 DE (always ranging between the 40s-50s in his first dozen seasons), he did see a dip in solo tackles below 40 for the first time in 2013 (32). (May 26)

49ers | Justin Smith able to practice (Thu Aug 14, 12:12 AM) - San Francisco 49ers DE Justin Smith (shoulder) returned to practice Wednesday, Aug. 13. It was Smith's first practice of training camp after offseason shoulder surgery.

Our View: Smith is as crucial as ever to a defense that will likely be without Navorro Bowman and Aldon Smith for most of the first half of the season. His return is welcome news for San Francisco.
