Chargers | Donald Brown returns    Mon Oct 5, 05:26 PM

Free-agent RB Donald Brown (Chargers) re-signed with the San Diego Chargers Monday, Oct. 5, according to a source. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Brown was inactive the first three weeks of the season for the Chargers. They cut him before Week 4 because they had three offensive linemen down with injury. Now, Brown returns as the team's 4th-string back behind Melvin Gordon, Danny Woodhead and Branden Oliver.

Chargers | Ronnie Brown could play in Week 6    Thu Oct 9, 12:34 PM

San Diego Chargers RB Ronnie Brown (concussion) could have a role in the passing game if he is cleared to play in Week 6. RB Branden Oliver likely will receive most of the carries during the game.

Footballguys view: It's hard to gauge if Branden Oliver was really as good as he looked against a New York Jets defense which is normally tremendous against the run or if he looked good against a defense that imploded on a team which is going supernova as we speak. Lucky for his owners, he has Oakland this week and they are absolutely not good against the run so he's a safe bet for RB2 numbers. If he proves himself reliable, Ronnie Brown might have no value at all. As it stands, don't have Brown in a lineup if he's active.

Chargers | Ronnie Brown re-signs    Tue Oct 7, 06:22 PM

The San Diego Chargers re-signed RB Ronnie Brown Tuesday, Oct. 7.

Footballguys view: With Donald Brown banged up, the Chargers needed running back help. Brown knows the system, but we don't believe he'll have much fantasy value. Branden Oliver should get a majority of the touches for the Chargers while Ryan Mathews continues to miss time due to a knee injury.

Texans | One signed, one cut    Wed Oct 1, 09:36 AM

Texans | O'Brien: Foster 'to play a lot'    Fri Sep 5, 11:08 AM

Houston Texans RB Arian Foster will 'get the bulk of the playing time' in Week 1, according to head coach Bill O'Brien. Jonathan Grimes, Alfred Blue and Ronnie Brown will be mixed in for certain situations. It'll be Foster's first game action -- regulation or exhibition -- since his season-ending back injury in 2013.

Footballguys view: If you drafted Foster, there's no reason to have him on your bench. There's a small risk of re-aggravation of a hamstring injury, and we've seen Foster do that before, but the upside against a so-so Washington defense is too good to pass up.

The New England Patriots have recently tried out free-agent RB Ronnie Brown (Chargers), RB Brian Leonard (Buccaneers), TE Ben Hartsock (Panthers) and TE Nate Byham (Buccaneers), according to a source.

Footballguys view: Hartsock and Byham are blocking tight ends. Between the draft and free agency, the Patriots don't seem to be in any hurry to reproduce the two tight end attack they had before Aaron Hernandez's career and life went south last year.

Chargers | Split carries for running backs may happen again    Sat Jan 11, 03:25 AM

Should San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) be unable to play Sunday, Jan. 12, against the Denver Broncos, RB Ronnie Brown and RB Danny Woodhead would likely split carries once again, much as they did last week when Mathews left the game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Footballguys view: Mathews is listed as questionable to play in this game. Without him, the Chargers could find it difficult to move the ball on the ground.

Chargers | Ryan Mathews' status in question?    Thu Jan 9, 05:06 PM

San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt said RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) 'will go if he can go' against the Denver Broncos in the divisional round this weekend. RBs Danny Woodhead and Ronnie Brown would pick up the slack if Mathews can't play.

Footballguys view: This is potentially huge for the Chargers--and Broncos. You could say 'game-changing' and not be called out for hyperbole. When the Chargers beat the Broncos in Week 15, Mathews' ability to move the chains and grind the clock were of paramount importance. While Ronnie Brown filled in OK for Mathews last week against the Cincinnati Bengals(and sealed the game with a 58-yard touchdown run), the Chargers stalled too often with him in the backfield and kept the Bengals around because of it. The Broncos will make them pay if that happens again, so you can imagine the Chargers have their fingers crossed for Mathews.

Chargers | Trusting Ryan Mathews    Mon Sep 16, 07:14 PM

The San Diego Chargers have trusted RB Ryan Mathews despite a fumble inside the red zone in the team's Week 2 game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Mathews has now fumbled eight times in his career and three times inside the red zone. Despite his fumble last weekend, Mathews played in the second half, although RBs Danny Woodhead and Ronnie Brown split carries. Mathews was absent for the team's hurry-up drive because of his inability to prove he can hang onto the football. 'You're going to play, you're going to make a mistake,' head coach Mike McCoy said of his words to Mathews. 'You just keep going, don't worry about the last play. Philip (Rivers) has made a mistake, there's going to be a bad call, I'll make a poor decision somewhere. You do something, keep going. The future is now, just keep playing.' Mathews carried the ball 16 times for 73 yards against the Eagles.

Footballguys view: Mathews isn't going to be the player the Chargers envisioned when they selected him in the first-round. He'll continue to lose touches to Brown and Woodhead going forward. The Chargers are going to be playing from behind a lot and will continue to feature their hurry up offense in the second half.

Chargers | Coach wants to use multiple RBs    Mon Jul 29, 03:30 PM

San Diego Chargers head coach Mike McCoy said he wants to use multiple running backs this season and will use the hot hand at the position. 'That's the big thing. Play the hot hand while you roll. If you've got to tap out for a play or two, we'll put the next guy in,' McCoy said. RB Ryan Mathews has worked with the first-team and second-team offense during practice and is part of a rotation with RBs Danny Woodhead and Ronnie Brown.

Footballguys view: This is something we've been telling you about for some time. Chargers beat writer Michael Gehlken was on The Audible earlier this offseason and said the team liked what they've seen from Woodhead. With the defensive problems we could see this team playing from behind a lot in 2013. That means more of the receiving/change of pace threat over starter Ryan Mathews. Woodhead could be a valued late addition for fantasy owners. His current ADP is RB40 and he's coming off the board at 8.07 in 12 team PPR leagues.

Chargers | Coach wants Ryan Mathews to be the guy    Mon Jul 15, 09:44 PM

San Diego Chargers head coach Mike McCoy wants RB Ryan Mathews to be the guy in 2013. McCoy said the depth the team added when they signed RBs Danny Woodhead and Ronnie Brown was not a reflection on Mathews. McCoy has one message for Mathews; 'To have a great year and be the guy.'

Footballguys view: Durability and confidence have been two issues Mathews needs to overcome in order to play up to his potential. He finished the 2011 season as the 7th best RB in fantasy football but fell to 30th last year. Mathews' current ADP is RB27 and he's coming off the board at 5.02 in 12 team PPR leagues. The Chargers could take Mathews off the field in certain situations and use free agent addition Danny Woodhead as their primary third down weapon. Since they're likely to be playing from behind a lot we could see more from Woodhead than some think.

Chargers | Won't put pressure on Ryan Mathews     Wed Jun 26, 07:46 PM

It seems as though the San Diego Chargers have come to grips with the fact that RB Ryan Mathews won't be the stud three-down running back they envisioned when they traded up to select him 12th overall in the 2010 NFL Draft. RB Danny Woodhead has been very impressive in offseason workouts, and The San Diego Union Tribune's Michael Gehlken thinks Woodhead will be a big part of the Bolts' running attack, taking valuable repetitions away from Mathews.

Footballguys view: This story came from an interview with Gehlken on our podcast "The Audible". Gehlken advocated Woodhead as a later pick in PPR leagues, and we agree with his advice.

Chargers | Ryan Mathews says he's been average, makes changes    Thu Jun 13, 01:33 PM

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews said he's 'been just an average back.' After bulking up last year in an effort to absorb hits more effectively, he has leaned out this year while also incorporating different stretches to stay flexible. Mathews is also studying more, specifically changing and working on understanding his blocking technique.

Footballguys view: Mathews is right, his NFL career has been a disappointment. This was the guy drafted to be the replacement for future Hall of Fame RB LaDainian Tomlinson and he's played more like Rod Bernstein. We'll see if Mathews can stay healthy, keep his confidence up, and play up to his potential in 2013.

Chargers | Ronnie Brown re-signs    Fri Mar 15, 05:35 PM

The San Diego Chargers re-signed RB Ronnie Brown to an undisclosed one-year deal.

Chargers | Doubting Ryan Mathews    Tue Jan 8, 04:39 PM

The San Diego Chargers are beginning to wonder if RB Ryan Mathews will ever become the type of player they thought he would become when they selected him 12th overall in the 2010 NFL Draft. The team would like him to become more polished and seize the full-time running back role. San Diego used RB Ronnie Brown in a receiving role this year in order to keep Mathews fresh; Brown ran a passing route on 60.4 percent of his offensive snaps, while Mathews ran routes 42.1 percent of the time. Mathews still believes he can be a game-changing back for the Chargers, however. 'It's time for me to show them why they bumped up all the spots they did to draft me,' Mathews, 25, said. 'I've shown greatness at times, and I've shown I can be the worst player at times. You've got to be consistent, and that's what I plan to do, Just be a little more consistent player and just be the guy they knew when they drafted.'

Footballguys view: Mathews is certainly looking like a bust at this point. He's failed to stay healthy for most of his career and when he's played Mathews hasn't been consistent. Mathews has to run with more determination and must stop dancing too much in the backfield if he's going to produce at his expected rate.

Chargers | Norv Turner mum on RB situation    Wed Dec 19, 06:39 PM

San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner didn't reveal his plans at running back in Week 16 after RB Ryan Mathews (clavicle) was placed on the Injured Reserve. 'Well, we've got a chance to get Ronnie Brown back' Turner said. 'Jackie Battle will get a chance to play. And Brink (Curtis Brinkley ) played some yesterday, though I don't know that he would play on third down. And we'll probably add Edwin Baker to the 53-man roster. I don't know that he would be active, but we'd have to see where Ronnie Brown is.'

Footballguys view: We'll see the Chargers use a RBBC for the rest of the year. Battle, Brinkley, and Brown will split carries and receptions out of the backfield. This is not a situation fantasy owners can find value in.

Footballguys view: Brown is still only a flex play after the way he looked last year with Philadelphia. Brinkley is probably a better back now, but he was hurt in the preseason. Le'Ron McClain could also figure into the mix with his prowess in short yardage. The Chargers backfield is not a place to look for safe production this week.

Footballguys view: We're hearing that Brinkley may be the guy to emerge in this RBBC. The coaching staff loves him and he plays with a nice blend of balance and elusiveness. Brown is more versatile but not the same player he used to be when he came out of Auburn years ago.

That means RBs Jackie Battle, Curtis Brinkley, Ronnie Brown and FB Le'Ron McClain are likely to shoulder the load during the remaining preseason games.

San Diego Chargers RB Ronnie Brown has had a strong training camp. He'll be needed to step into the starting lineup with RB Ryan Mathews (shoulder) sidelined up to six weeks.

Chargers | Two favorites for complementary touches at RB    Fri Jul 20, 11:59 PM

San Diego Chargers RB Ronnie Brown and FB Le'Ron McClain are considered the favorites for complementary touches behind starting RB Ryan Mathews heading into training camp and the preseason.

Footballguys view: Mathews is going to get a huge workload this season and could finish the year as a top 5 fantasy RB. When he needs a breather we feel the team will rely mostly on Brown. However, if it's a short-yardage situation then we could see them look to the bigger and more powerful McClain.

Chargers | Edwin Baker, Le'Ron McClain in mix for carries    Tue Jun 26, 10:11 PM

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews is the unquestioned starting tailback, but it gets murky after that on the depth chart. RB Ronnie Brown is viewed as being at the tail end of his career. Brown will try to hold off RB Curtis Brinkley for the primary backup role behind Mathews. RB Edwin Baker and FB Le'Ron McClain will also be in the mix for carries.

Footballguys view: McClain had nearly 1,000-yards rushing for the Ravens in 2008, but hasn't been asked to carry the rock in recent years. Baker has good lower body strength, elite quickness, and good initial burst. However, he lacks top end speed and is nothing more than a change of pace back in our eyes.
