Cowboys | Ryan Williams placed on IR    Tue Jul 28, 05:45 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Ryan Williams (knee) was placed on Reserve/Injured Tuesday, July 28.

Footballguys view: Williams was put on Injured Reserve--not released as earlier reports indicated. He just can't get healthy. This is truly a "what might have been" sitaution. Williams was a gifted runner, but his body has betrayed him as a pro and his playing days are likely over.

Cowboys | Ryan Williams cut    Tue Jul 28, 11:43 AM

Dallas Cowboys RB Ryan Williams (knee) was waived/injured Tuesday, July 28.

Footballguys view: The story of Williams will always read "what might have been." Coming out of Virginia Tech, Williams was incredible as a runner with big-play ability. A knee injury during his rookie season robbed him of his natural skill, and he's never been the same since then.

Cowboys | Ryan Williams not a fit in Big D?    Mon Jun 22, 11:30 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Ryan Williams is unlikely to make the 53-man roster projected by beat writer Todd Archer. The team's running backs would be RBs Joseph Randle, Darren McFadden, Lance Dunbar and FB Tyler Clutts.

Footballguys view: It's not that Williams isn't a fit--it's that he can't stay healthy. Williams looked like he could be a superstar coming out of Virginia Tech a few years ago, but injuries have derailed his pro career. Williams has been limited by a swollen knee this offseason.

Cowboys | Ryan Williams on the outside looking in?    Mon Jun 22, 09:19 PM

Todd Archer, from ESPN.com, believes that Dallas Cowboys running back Ryan Williams won't make the final roster. Williams was limited in the spring because of a swollen knee, and that doesn't help his cause.

Footballguys view: Williams was a fantastic running back in college at Virginia Tech, but that seems like a lifetime ago. We feel his NFL career will read "what might have been" as these injuries have kept him from doing much of anything as a pro.

Cowboys | Ryan Williams working on side    Wed Jun 10, 12:41 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Ryan Williams (knee) is working on the side during practice Wednesday, June 10.

Footballguys view: The story with Williams will likely always read "what if." The dude is incredibly talented as a runner, and he was a superstar in college at Virginia Tech. His career has been knocked completely off track by injuries and this year with Dallas might be his last hurrah in the NFL.

Cowboys | Ryan Williams nursing sore knee    Thu Jun 4, 01:23 AM

Dallas Cowboys RB Ryan Williams (knee) was sidelined Wednesday, June 3, at organized team activities (OTAs) due to a sore knee.

Footballguys view: Williams has so much talent, but his injuries keep him from reaching his true potential. It's a shame, really, because he could be a huge factor in this offense. Instead, he's likely to be stuck behind Joseph Randle and Darren McFadden, though McFadden certainly has his own injury issues. Williams is going undrafted right now, but could be worth a very late-round flier.

Cowboys | Jerry Jones confident in run game    Thu May 14, 07:41 PM

Dallas Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones expressed confidence in the team's overall run game Thursday, May 14. "You say the entire running game, and that would be including our tight ends, including our fullback - the entire game - we're better," Jones said. The Cowboys have yet to determine roles for their running backs. As it stands, RB Darren McFadden is at the top of the depth chart, with RBs Joseph Randle, Lance Dunbar and Ryan Williams in the mix.

Footballguys view: Darren McFadden is constantly hurt, and his fifth round ADP shows a general distrust by owners so far. Consider that this is a fifth round pick behind one of the best offensive lines in the NFL. Joseph Randle is going in the late ninth round, while Ryan Williams is a common pick late in round 12. Lance Dunbar is hanging on with an ADP of round 14. All this goes to show is that nobody has much faith that this will be productive for all the backs and are cautious about McFadden and his injury issues.

Cowboys | Ryan Williams in the mix    Fri May 8, 11:29 AM

Dallas Cowboys RB Ryan Williams will be in the mix in the running back committee but needs to improve his pass blocking, according to general manager Stephen Jones.

Footballguys view: You could make the argument that Williams is the most naturally talented back on the roster--yes, even more than Darren McFadden. However, Williams entire pro career has been set back by injuries. If healthy, we'd like to see what he can finally do in the pros. Williams was a star in college at Virginia Tech, and that's why the Cardinals selected him in the second round of the 2011 NFL draft.

Cowboys | Mister Alexander, Ryan Williams signed    Tue Jan 13, 06:31 PM

Dallas Cowboys LB Mister Alexander and RB Ryan Williams signed Reserve/Futures contracts Tuesday, Jan. 13.

Footballguys view: We're still not ready to give up on Williams in super deep dynasty leagues. He was an amazingly talented runner during his time in college at Virginia Tech. If you've got the roster space in a deeper league, go ahead and hold on Williams if you can.

Cowboys | DeMarco Murray to be game-time decision?    Tue Dec 16, 05:42 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB DeMarco Murray (hand) will likely be a game-time decision against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 16, according to owner Jerry Jones. Jones said the team is still evaluating Murray's status for this weekend. "I think we just want to take a look at it. We don't know," Jones said. "I'm not so sure, when they say the definition of healing, how much can heal between now and Sunday."

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners will be on the edge of their seats until we get a decision. Have Murray at the ready, but make sure to have a backup plan in place. The Cowboys have a backup plan in case Murray can't play. RBs Joseph Randle and Lance Dunbar will prepare for increased workloads if Murray can't play, and RB Ryan Williams could be activated off the practice squad.

Cowboys | Ryan Williams added to practice squad    Sun Aug 31, 04:41 PM

  Cowboys | 19 cut    Sat Aug 30, 05:43 PM

The Dallas Cowboys released RB D.J. Adams, OT Josh Aladenoye, DE Kenneth Boatright, DT Dartwan Bush, WR LaRon Byrd, OG Stephen Goodin, CB Terrance Mitchell, WR Jamar Newsome, C Ronald Patrick, DE Caesar Rayford, LB Dontavis Sapp, LB Keith Smith, SS Ryan Smith, LB William Smith, RB Phillip Tanner, TE Asa Watson, RB Ryan Williams, LB Orie Lemon and DT Zach Minter.

Footballguys view: Byrd was an intriguing talent to keep tabs on in super deep dynasty leagues. He has a size/speed combination that can create mismatch problems. We'll see if he can stick around on the practice squad.

Cowboys | Ryan Williams waived    Sat Aug 30, 03:21 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Ryan Williams has been waived.

Footballguys view: Williams will always be remembered as a "what might have been" player in the NFL. Injuries have robbed him of the athleticism and explosiveness that made him a dangerous runner in college at Virginia Tech. He's running out of chances in the NFL.

Cowboys | May carry four RB's    Wed Aug 27, 05:51 AM

Dallas Cowboys RB's DeMarco Murray and Lance Dunbar are locks to make the 53-man roster, and RB's Joseph Randle and Ryan Williams are battling for the third spot. However, executive vice president Stephen Jones did not rule out all four making the squad.

Footballguys view: Randle helps on special teams, while Williams is purely a running back. That the Cowboys could keep four backs is a sign of how much Randle has improved and how much Williams can provide as a back now. If Williams is released, he could get a call from another team soon.

Cowboys | Ryan Williams appears to be a longshot     Mon Jul 28, 02:52 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Ryan Williams looks to be a longshot for the final roster, because he is not a good special teams player and would have to help on special teams if he is in a reserve role.

Footballguys view: We love the natural talent that Williams showed when he came out of Virginia Tech years ago. However, they call the league "Not For Long" for a reason. Williams is certainly on the bubble in Cowboys camp this year. We're afraid that Williams career will always be remembered as "what might have been?"

Cowboys | Lance Dunbar healthy, set for third-down duty    Sat Jul 12, 11:34 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Lance Dunbar (knee) hasn't missed a snap this offseason and should fill the third-down back role for the team this year.

Footballguys view: An important note for fantasy owners here. Demarco Murray is an early second-round pick in most leagues (current ADP of RB7 2.01 in 12-team PPR leagues), but with his injury history (13 games missed in three seasons) there will be many fantasy owners who want to handcuff his backup to their roster later in the draft. Dunbar is that guy. His current ADP is RB49 (11.11) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Cowboys | Three RBs battling for spot    Mon May 26, 11:57 PM

The decision to carry three running backs and a fullback is not expected to be decided until the second or third preseason game. If the team elects not to carry a fullback, it might make it easier for RBs Ben Malena, Joseph Randle or Ryan Williams to make the roster.

Footballguys view: Right now, you'd have to give the edge to Randle and Williams (if they're healthy). Watch this battle in training camp.

Cowboys | Ryan Williams contract update    Thu May 22, 07:26 PM

Updating a previous report, the Dallas Cowboys signed RB Ryan Williams to a one-year deal worth $570,000. The deal did not include any signing bonus or guaranteed money.

Footballguys view: Williams just couldn't stay healthy in Arizona, but apparently looked impressive in his workout with Dallas. He has Lance Dunbar and Joseph Randle to contend with for a spot. We believe he could end up as the No. 3 back in Dallas by summer's end. However, unless there is an injury, he is only worth rostering in the deepest of redraft leagues.

Cowboys | Ryan Williams signed    Sun May 18, 02:54 AM

Updating a previous item, the Dallas Cowboys have signed RB Ryan Williams. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: This move was expected after Williams impressed during a workout with the Cowboys. Talent has never been a question, Williams has struggled to stay healthy during his pro career. If healthy, Williams gives the team a valuable backup behind Demarco Murray.

Cowboys | Could sign Ryan Williams    Sat May 17, 02:15 PM

According to two sources, the Dallas Cowboys are considering signing free-agent RB Ryan Williams (Cardinals) following an impressive showing at a workout Saturday, May 17.

Footballguys view: Williams has always had the talent, but injuries have destroyed his pro career to this point. If healthy, Williams could give the team a fine backup option behind Demarco Murray.

Cowboys | Expected to work out Ryan Williams    Fri May 16, 08:59 PM

The Dallas Cowboys are expected to work out free-agent RB Ryan Williams (Cardinals) in the near future.

Footballguys view: Dallas would be a good landing spot for Williams. His talent has never been a question, but durability has held him back as a pro. He needed a fresh start after busting with the Cardinals, and he could certainly win a reserve job in Dallas behind Demarco Murray.

Cardinals | Ryan Williams cut    Mon May 12, 04:09 PM

The Arizona Cardinals have released RB Ryan Williams.

Footballguys view: The story with Williams will always be "what might have been." Injuries have really set him back as a pro. When healthy (briefly) he's struggled with consistency. Williams was a stud in college at Virginia Tech, but his pro career needed a fresh start.

Cardinals | Ryan Williams to receive a chance    Mon Feb 24, 08:56 AM

The Arizona Cardinals will give RB Ryan Williams a chance to make the team in camp, but he's no lock. He missed the entire preseason due to injury last year and was a healthy scratch all 16 games. 'It's very hard to become a player during the season when you miss the entire preseason,' head coach Bruce Arians said. 'He did impressive things on the scout team. The big thing, he came to work every day. The consistency of showing up to work every day - that will be the big thing for him in training camp this year.'

Footballguys view: Williams will get a shot, but his odds are tough. We'll see the Cardinals likely move forward with a ground game that features Andre Ellington with a dash of Stepfan Taylor. Williams had incredible talent coming of of Virginia Tech a few years ago, but injuries and inconsistencies have held him back.

Cardinals | Expected to cut Ryan Williams    Sat Jan 11, 11:41 AM

The Arizona Cardinals are expected to release RB Ryan Williams this offseason in order to create $1 million in salary cap space. Williams likely does not have much trade value at this point.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. A fresh start could do Williams some good. It's time to buy low in deep dynasty leagues. Williams has the natural talent to be a quality pro, but injuries and inconsistencies have held him back.

Cardinals | Ryan Williams disappointed, but hopeful    Fri Oct 25, 10:49 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Ryan Williams is disappointed he hasn't played yet this season, and he remains patient and hopeful he'll finally be active in Week 8 with RB Rashard Mendenhall (toe) doubtful to play. 'I have no answers for anything,' Williams said Friday, Oct. 25. 'I don't know. I don't know what is going to happen this Sunday. We'll see what happens on Sunday. I just approach every day like I have been doing. Continue to work hard in practice and whenever they tell me I get to go as a definite I will go.' Head coach Bruce Arians said Williams has been inactive because of his lack of playing special teams.

Footballguys view: It sounds like Williams is healthy, but whether Bruce Arians will use him on Sunday is an entirely different question. It's hard to completely write off a running back of Williams' talent, but he might have to hit a second team before we see what he's capable of now.

It appears as though Arizona Cardinals RB Ryan Williams will stay inactive on game days unless there is an injury to a running back ahead of him on the depth chart. RB Stepfan Taylor has added value because of his importance on special teams.

Footballguys view: Williams has not made a positive impression with the new coaching staff. He should continue to be a healthy scratch moving forward. Williams will likely have to get his career on track with a different team. He has plenty of talent, so throw out a buy low offer in dynasty leagues.

Cardinals | RB Williams feels natural again    Fri Aug 30, 03:53 AM

Arizona Cardinals RB Ryan Williams felt good after he carried the ball nine times for 25 yards and one touchdown against the Broncos in week four the preseason. "It felt really natural. I felt like I was back at Virginia Tech again, it was almost scary. This was the first time that I actually felt natural running since the knee injury. It never really felt like this since then, so it feels really good to be able to go out there and know what I'm doing and just let the game come to me instead of me sitting there trying to make something happen." Williams said.
