Week 16: vs San Diego Chargers
Mark and Joe say: Bad matchup. Carlos Hyde (back, ankle injuries) and Frank Gore (concussion protocol) both missed the Tuesday practice, and both look iffy for the Saturday contest in Levi's Stadium, though there is some hope that Hyde will practice later in the week. Stay Tuned to Footballguys.com's Players in the News for the latest on this developing story as the 49ers are down to just Alfonso Smith (4/6/0 rushing this season) and full back Bruce Miller (5/9/0 rushing with 13/150/1 receiving so far this year) if Hyde can't play in the game Sunday. That's not much in the way of a ground game, folks. The Chargers' rush D is ranked 13th in the NFL with just 108.6 rushing yards allowed per game, and eight rushing scores given away over 14 games played. Last week, Denver had 39/111/0 rushing at San Diego - New England managed 28/87/0 there two weeks ago. This is a bad matchup if Hyde is out - upgrade to tough if he can actually play and play well (which remains to be seen).

Our View: The 49ers are looking for running back help because both Frank Gore (concussion) and Carlos Hyde (ankle, back) are banged up.
