Los Angeles Rams QB Carson Wentz completed 17-of-24 passes for 163 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in Week 18 against the San Francisco 49ers, while running 17 times for a game-high 56 yards and a touchdown.

Rams | Matthew Stafford to rest Week 18    Wed Jan 3, 02:17 PM

Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford will not play in Week 18 and QB Carson Wentz will start in his place, according to sources on Wednesday, Jan. 3.

Footballguys view: The Rams travel to play the 49ers in Week 18. They're going with Wentz as their starter, and the 49ers are starting Sam Darnold. Rewind this matchup a few years ago and it would seem pretty good. Now, it's a matchup between a guy trying to hold onto his career (Wentz) and a quality backup (Darnold). Things change pretty quickly around here.

Rams | Carson Wentz set to join LA Rams    Tue Nov 7, 02:37 PM

Free-agent QB Carson Wentz (Commanders) reportedly agreed to terms on an undisclosed contract with the Los Angeles Rams on Tuesday, Nov. 7.

Footballguys view: The Rams have seen enough of QB Brett Rypien. The team is on their bye in Week 10, but QB Matthew Stafford is expected to return as their starter in Week 11. Wentz should replace Rypien as the primary backup to Stafford going forward. He's not what he used to be, and Wentz went just 2-5 as the Commanders' starter in 2022.

NFL | Carson Wentz plans to play    Thu Jun 15, 01:09 PM

Free-agent QB Carson Wentz (Commanders) plans to play this upcoming season and is waiting for the right situation.

Footballguys view: He has been throwing and studying film with former Las Vegas Raiders head coach Jon Gruden in Tampa. We wouldn't be surprised to see the Raiders add Wentz to the mix if Jimmy Garoppolo can't participate in training camp (or is released) due to his foot injury.

Raiders | Carson Wentz an option for Las Vegas?    Thu Jun 8, 03:33 PM

Free-agent QB Carson Wentz 'would seem to be the best option' for the Las Vegas Raiders if they are forced to move on from Jimmy Garoppolo (foot) because he is unable to pass a physical this summer, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Paul Gutierrez.

Footballguys view: This wouldn't be an upgrade from Garoppolo, but Wentz would be better for the offense than Brian Hoyer, probably, with familiarity with Josh McDaniels offense as a wild card. An injury to a starter is just what Wentz needs to get another chance to prove himself.

NFL | Carson Wentz working out    Sun May 14, 01:02 PM

Free-agent QB Carson Wentz (Commanders) has been working out this offseason and is receiving interest from a few teams.

Footballguys view: Earlier this year, reports came to the surface about how Wentz still wants to keep playing football - no matter what the role. He is open to both starter and backup roles and may not sign with a team until later in the offseason.

Commanders | Carson Wentz unlikely to return    Fri Jan 20, 07:17 PM

Washington Commanders QB Carson Wentz likely will be released this offseason because the team can create around $26 million in salary cap space if he is cut.

Footballguys view: Commanders' general manager Martin Mayhew would not commit to bringing back Wentz, which should come as no surprise. CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones reports Washington is telling offensive coordinator candidates that QB Sam Howell will "likely" be their starter in 2023.

Commanders | Carson Wentz done in Washington?    Fri Jan 6, 01:38 AM

Washington Commanders QB Carson Wentz is likely to be cut during the offseason, in the opinion of FOX Sports' Ralph Vacchiano, who notes that Wentz is due a $6.2 million roster bonus and would count $26.2 million against the cap if he were on the roster in 2023.

Footballguys view: Wentz has likely used up his last chance at entering the season as a starter, but he'll be a high value backup in a league that always has a shortage of playable quarterbacks.

Commanders | Carson Wentz has dreadful performance    Sun Jan 1, 04:40 PM

Washington Commanders QB Carson Wentz completed 16-of-28 passes for 143 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions in Week 17 against the Cleveland Browns, while adding seven rushing yards and a touchdown on three attempts.

Footballguys view: Ron Rivera picked the exact wrong time to put Wentz in as the Commanders are now on the outside of the playoff picture looking in. Now they will be playing for their lives next week against a Cowboys team that suddenly has a chance to be the division winner and maybe even #1 seed if they can beat Washington and the Giants (who have nothing to play for playoff-wise) beat the Eagles. The Commanders starting quarterback next week could be Wentz, Sam Howell, or Taylor Heinicke.

Commanders | Carson Wentz taking over    Wed Dec 28, 08:14 AM

Washington Commanders QB Carson Wentz was named the starter for Week 17 with QB Taylor Heinicke going to the bench.

Footballguys view: The Commanders want to make the postseason, and they're hanging on right now so that's why they go back to Wentz. Heinicke flashed (as he has before) and then his game fell apart (as it has before), so the Commanders will run the heck out of the ball with Wentz under center.

Commanders | Washington undecided about Week 17 starting QB    Tue Dec 27, 01:38 PM

Washington Commanders QBs Carson Wentz and Taylor Heinicke both displayed 'positives' in Week 16 against the San Francisco 49ers, leaving the team in a position where it has yet to decide which one will start in Week 17 versus the Cleveland Browns.

Footballguys view: This was the buzz around the building entering the week. Now, Fantasy GMs are going to wait and see because things look different when it's either Taylor Heinicke or Carson Wentz out there under center. Rivera told reporters that he expects to announce the starter Wednesday, Dec. 28.

Commanders | Carson Wentz not confirmed as starter    Sat Dec 24, 10:05 PM

Washington Commanders QB Carson Wentz replaced QB Taylor Heinicke in Week 16, but after the game, head coach Ron Rivera said a decision hasn't been made on which quarterback will start going forward. 'It's not going to be a knee-jerk,' Rivera said. 'It's going to be something, at the end of the day, I really do believe gives us the best chance to win football games, get into the playoffs and see what happens.'

Commanders | Carson Wentz comes off bench for TD    Sat Dec 24, 07:16 PM

Washington Commanders QB Carson Wentz completed 12-of-16 passes for 123 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in a relief appearance in Week 16 against the San Francisco 49ers.

Footballguys view: Wentz is more experienced than Heinicke, although he was facing a softer defense nursing a lead at the end of the game than the defense at the beginning trying to seize the game. He'll have a high ceiling against the Browns next week if he starts.

Commanders | Taylor Heinicke benched    Sat Dec 24, 06:47 PM

Washington Commanders QB Taylor Heinicke was benched in the fourth quarter of the Week 16 game against the San Francisco 49ers. He completed 13-of-18 passes for 166 yards, two touchdowns, one interception and one fumble lost. He was replaced by QB Carson Wentz.

Footballguys view: The Commanders are very much in the playoff hunt, so we're on the edge of our seats waiting to see who starts next week against Cleveland. Whoever it is will be a risky play with the team not certain who is the best option at quarterback.

Commanders | Carson Wentz activated    Mon Dec 12, 12:54 PM

Washington Commanders QB Carson Wentz (finger) was activated from the Reserve/Injured list Monday, Dec. 12.

Footballguys view: He'll serve as backup quarterback to starting QB Taylor Heinicke. The Commanders are 7-5-1 and pushing for a playoff spot. Unless Heinicke struggles, Wentz won't see the field for the rest of the regular season.

Commanders | Carson Wentz to serve as backup    Tue Dec 6, 08:36 PM

Washington Commanders QB Carson Wentz (finger) will be the team's primary backup to QB Taylor Heinicke upon returning from injury, head coach Ron Rivera said on Monday, Dec. 5.

Footballguys view: That sounds about right. The Commanders are playing good football and mostly winning (sometimes tieing) with Heinicke under center. Wentz won't get onto the field unless Heinicke is hurt or is struggling.

Commanders | Carson Wentz designated to return    Wed Nov 23, 02:46 PM

Washington Commanders QB Carson Wentz (finger) was designated to return from injured reserve on Wednesday, Nov. 23.

Footballguys view: Wentz now has a 21-day practice window. When he's ready to be active on gameday, Wentz returns to the Commanders' sideline. Head coach Ron Rivera has Taylor Heinicke as the team's starter, so Wentz is the veteran backup when he's ready to return.

Commanders | Ron Rivera mum on QB situation    Tue Nov 15, 03:52 PM

Washington Commanders QB Taylor Heinicke remains likely to start in Week 11 against the Houston Texans for now. However, head coach Ron Rivera told reporters Tuesday, Nov. 15, that no decision will be made about the starting quarterback moving forward until Carson Wentz (finger) returns to practice and he hears from team doctors about what they have decided regarding Wentz's recovery.

Footballguys view: The team beat the undefeated Eagles with Heinicke starting on Monday in Week 10. In fact, Heinicke is 3-1 in four starts with the Commanders. Against the Texans in Week 11, there's no need to upset the apple cart by forcing Wentz into action if he's not 100 percent ready. They could just slow-play this injury until Heinicke starts struggling...if he starts struggling. Heinicke is not lighting the league on fire, but the team seems to respond to the "YOLO" ball that he plays.

Commanders | Carson Wentz placed on IR    Sat Oct 22, 12:35 PM

Washington Commanders QB Carson Wentz (finger) was placed on injured reserve on Saturday, Oct. 22.

Footballguys view: That knocks Wentz out of action for at least four weeks. Reports indicate Wentz has a 4-6 week recovery period after having surgery this week. The Commanders will turn to QB Taylor Heinicke as their starter while Wentz is out. If/when Commanders head coach Ron Rivera gets sick of Heinicke's 'YOLO' playing style, they might turn to rookie Sam Howell to give him some experience.

Commanders | Carson Wentz expected to miss at least a month    Mon Oct 17, 03:11 PM

Washington Commanders QB Carson Wentz (finger) will likely need four to six weeks to recover from the broken finger he suffered in Week 6 against the Chicago Bears.

Footballguys view: The Commanders can now turn to Taylor Heinicke as their starter. He's been the starter before, and things haven't turned out positively for the team. That makes us wonder when rookie QB Sam Howell (fifth round, North Carolina) could get a shot to gain valuable playing experience.

Commanders | Carson Wentz has fractured finger    Sat Oct 15, 10:19 AM

Washington Commanders QB Carson Wentz (finger, shoulder) sustained a fractured ring finger on his right hand in Week 6's game versus the Chicago Bears, according to a source.

Footballguys view: You'll have to keep an eye on this situation and pluck rookie QB Sam Howell off the waiver wire when you can. Wentz is slated to visit a hand specialist in Los Angeles and his status going forward has yet to be determined.

Commanders | Ugly line for Carson Wentz     Thu Oct 13, 11:13 PM

Washington Commanders QB Carson Wentz completed 12 of his 22 pass attempts for 99 yards in a 12-7 win over the Chicago Bears in Week 6.

Footballguys view: Wentz isn't 100% and it showed, although he should have had a 40 yard score that Curtis Samuel dropped. He'll face Green Bay next week but has lost our confidence after a hot start. He's not an essential hold, and Wentz is endangering the value of everyone in this offense after boosting it earlier this year.

Commanders | Carson Wentz update    Thu Oct 13, 08:10 AM

Washington Commanders QB Carson Wentz (biceps) will start Thursday, Oct. 13, despite a biceps strain near his shoulder that had his status in question all week.

Footballguys view: He is sore and not 100 percent, but the plan is to get through the game and have 10 days to heal up for the next one. The Bears' defense doesn't present many challenges, so perhaps the Commanders will run the ball early and often to win what could be an ugly game.

Washington Commanders QB Carson Wentz (shoulder) was listed as limited on the team's injury report Tuesday, Oct. 11. The team conducted a walkthrough so the 'limited' tag is an estimation.

Footballguys view: We'll see how much longer Wentz is the starter for the Commanders. There's a chance that rookie QB Sam Howell could get into the lineup at some point in the future with Wentz banged up.

Washington Commanders QB Carson Wentz went 25-for-42 for 170 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 4.

Footballguys view: Wentz was under pressure all day and never got anything going in the downfield passing game. He'll have an easier draw against the Titans next week. We've seen the whole range of Wentz game in four games, but Week 5 should be on the positive side for fantasy and put him in QB2/Superflex consideration.

Washington Commanders QB Carson Wentz completed 27-of-41 passes for 313 yards, four touchdowns, and two interceptions while rushing for 12 yards in Week 1 against the Jacksonville Jaguars in his regular-season team debut.

Footballguys view: Wentz won a lot of fans in Washington with this performance, and he made a lot of Commanders offensive skill players viable against the last defense he faced as a Colt. The Lions just gave up 38 points and they are up next, so Wentz has a lot of appeal in superflex leagues, and could be worth a pickup in 1QB leagues.

Commanders | QB Howell Could Impact the Future    Sat Sep 3, 04:02 PM

Ralph Vacchiano, from Fox Sports, reports Washington Commanders rookie QB Sam Howell "could end up impacting the Commanders' future plans" at quarterback.

Footballguys view: The Commanders have Carson Wentz as their starter, but he may not be their future as they can walk away from his contract after this season. Howell fell in the 2022 NFL draft coming out of North Carolina, and the Commanders were able to select him in the fifth round. He's performed well during training camp and the preseason, leading some to believe Howell could end up as a possible quarterback of the future in Washington.

Commanders | Carson Wentz inconsistent at camp    Mon Aug 8, 11:29 AM

Washington Commanders QB Carson Wentz has been 'consistently inconsistent' in training camp and is having accuracy issues, according to The Washington Post's Sam Fortier on Sunday, Aug. 7.

Footballguys view: Anyone who has watched Wentz with the Colts or the Eagles knows that he's inconsistent. It sounds like he's still the player he used to be. Fantasy GMs should look at Wentz as a QB2 in 12-team leagues. He's ranked between QB14 and QB22 on a per-game basis over the last three seasons.

Commanders | Carson Wentz impressing    Tue Jun 28, 10:31 AM

Washington Commanders QB Carson Wentz impressed the team with a strong arm, his worth ethics and his cognitive abilities. 'There's a lot of different things he's capable of doing,' offensive coordinator Scott Turner said. 'Obviously a very skilled player. You see him out at practice, he's a big, physical guy. He can really push the ball down the field.'

Footballguys view: You know the offseason fluff is hitting an all-time high when "Wentz impressing" is the headline. Turner is right about Wentz - his physical skill set has always been impressive. He's a big, strong-armed quarterback who can attack a defense deep. However, the physical skill is easy to see. It's the mental side of the game Wentz needs to get better at. That, and he needs to stay healthy in order to play up to his potential in 2022. Wentz is currently going undrafted in 12-team PPR leagues, and we see him as a low-end QB2 with limited upside.
