The Arizona Cardinals are not expected to re-sign impending free-agent RB Chester Taylor this offseason because they are getting RB Ryan Williams (knee) back from injury.

Footballguys view: Not a surprise here. Taylor may have difficulty finding work as a free agent.

Cardinals | Beanie Wells being limited    Mon Nov 21, 04:22 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Beanie Wells' (knee) snaps are being managed as he continues to deal with a knee injury. The team has been using a lot more one-back sets with RBs LaRod Stephens-Howling and Chester Taylor.

Footballguys view: Wells should not be relied on as a fantasy starter until he proves that he is fully back from his knee injury.

Cardinals | Beanie Wells runs for 33 yards    Sun Nov 20, 09:21 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Beanie Wells carried eight times for 33 yards in Week 11 against the San Francisco 49ers. RB Chester Taylor actually led the team in rushing, getting just one attempt for 34 yards.

Footballguys view: Just as we suspected, Wells was unable to get anything going against the best run defense in the league. At least his problem knee got some rest.

Cardinals | Beanie Wells not at full strength    Wed Nov 2, 07:28 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Beanie Wells (knee) will miss practice time for the rest of the season, and he admitted that he isn't as explosive as he was before the injury. RBs LaRod Stephens-Howling, Alfonso Smith and Chester Taylor will likely be used more as a result.

Footballguys view: Wells looked like he couldn't quite get to the corner or accelerate to full speed, but he was still more than adequate last week, so he's probably a hold even though he hasn't played well through injuries in the past.

Cardinals | Beanie Wells not practicing    Wed Oct 26, 06:48 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Beanie Wells (knee) did not practice Wednesday, Oct. 26, casting more doubt on his availability for Week 8 against the Baltimore Ravens.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals will use Alfonso Smith as their starter if Wells is unable to play. We'll also see more from veteran Chester Taylor in a RBBC. It's a tough matchup against the Ravens on Sunday, so we're not expecting a lot from the Cards ground game.

Cardinals | Alfonso Smith expected to start Week 8    Mon Oct 24, 02:45 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Alfonso Smith is expected to start in Week 8 if RB Beanie Wells (knee) is not able to play. Head coach Ken Whisenhunt said RBs Chester Taylor and LaRod Stephens-Howling would also see time with the team using a little bit of a running back-by-committee approach.

Footballguys view: Smith is a no-nonsense type of runner and not an exciting fantasy option because of his lack of elite skills and the Cardinals struggling offense.

Cardinals | Still evaluating Chester Taylor    Thu Sep 29, 01:08 AM

Arizona Cardinals RB Chester Taylor got the start in Week 3 against the Seattle Seahawks, but he was replaced by Alfonso Smith after eight carries, and Smith played the balance of the game. 'It's a tough situation, to come in and have to play when you haven't been with the team very long,' Whisenhunt said of Taylor. The team signed Taylor during the week of the regular season opener.

Footballguys view: We're not still evaluating Chester Taylor. He's not worth owning in any league, any format.

Cardinals | Chester Taylor will play Week 2    Mon Sep 12, 03:25 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Chester Taylor will be part of the game plan in Week 2 after not being active in Week 1. The team decided to sit Taylor out because he only had a few days of practice since joining the team.

Footballguys view: We're not expecting much from Taylor as long as Beanie Wells stays healthy. He should get a few carries and targets out of the backfield but not enough to be fantasy relevant.

Cardinals | Chester Taylor agrees to terms     Sun Sep 4, 02:32 PM

The Arizona Cardinals have agreed to terms with free-agent RB Chester Taylor (Bears) on a one-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.

NFL | Chester Taylor shouldn't be homeless for long    Sat Sep 3, 03:52 PM

Bears | Chester Taylor released    Sat Sep 3, 01:56 PM

The Chicago Bears have release veteran RB Chester Taylor. Head coach Lovie Smith previously told Taylor that he was no longer in the team's plans because of the strong play by RB Marion Barber III.

Footballguys view: Taylor's roller coaster week comes to an end the way it got started. He was told earlier in the week that he was going to be released, but the front office had a change of heart. They kept him around for a little while longer but in the end the extra audition time did nothing to change their mind. He's not the same back he used to be, but could catch on with another team because of his versatility.

Chicago Bears RB Chester Taylor was back with the team at practice Tuesday, Aug. 30, after he left the team's complexes a day earlier thinking he had been released.

Lions | Could show interest in Chester Taylor    Mon Aug 29, 01:53 PM

The Detroit Lions may pursue Chicago Bears RB Chester Taylor once the Bears release him.

Footballguys view: Taylor is a versatile player who can be used as a runner or receiver out of the backfield. The Lions have cut Mike Bell, so could be in the market for a guy like Taylor. He would compete with Jerome Harrison for a backup spot behind Jahvid Best.

Bears | Happy with Chester Taylor    Mon Mar 7, 11:03 AM

The Chicago Bears are happy with RB Chester Taylor and are not going to release him, according to Brad Biggs, of NationalFootballPost.com. Taylor was the first running back with more than 100 carries since the merger in 1970 to average less than 2.4 yards per attempt. 'We're definitely satisfied with him. I am sure he would have liked to have had more yards, more carries, but Matt took off and Matt is the horse we rode,' said running backs coach Tim Spencer. 'I certainly like Chester and I am sure he will be better next year statistically. I am happy with him. Chester made everybody better.'

Footballguys view: Chester is a versatile back who gives the Bears quality depth at the RB position. We don't see them upgrading that position with a premium pick in the 2011 NFL Draft.

Chicago Bears RB Chester Taylor is likely to remain with the team in 2011, according to a source, reports Adam Caplan, of FOXSports.com.

Footballguys view: Taylor and Matt Forte gave the Bears a great 1-2 punch in the backfield, and we expect more of the same in 2011. Forte will be the lead back once again, but Taylor gives the team valuable veteran depth and versatility as a runner and receiver.

Chicago Bears RB Matt Forte wants the team to rectify the disparity of salaries between himself and RB Chester Taylor, according to Sean Jensen, of Chicago Sun-Times. Forte was the most productive but third-best-paid among Bears running backs this season. 'I appreciate Chester, and we have a good rotation going on,' Forte said. 'But I just hope the Bears' management and coach Lovie (Smith) get together and do what's fair. I'm just hoping they do the right thing, but there's really nothing I can do about it.'   Bears | Looking for better rushing results than Week 6    Wed Jan 12, 10:42 PM

The Chicago Bears got a combined 42 rushing yards from RBs Matt Forte and Chester Taylor on 12 carries in a Week 6 loss against the Seattle Seahawks, the team's opponent in the NFC Divisional Round playoff game Sunday, Jan. 16, reports Vaughn McClure, of the Chicago Tribune. 'What we have to do (is) run the ball and control the clock; keep (Seattle Seahawks QB Matt Hasselbeck) off the field,' Forte said Wednesday, Jan. 12. 'We have to give our defense a rest, and then wear the Seahawks' defense down.'

Footballguys view: The Bears want to control the tempo of the game this weekend. In order to do that they need a good performance from Matt Forte and Chester Taylor.

Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz said he'd like to see RBs Matt Forte and Chester Taylor on the field together, the Chicago Sun-Times' Sean Jensen reports.

Footballguys view: Uh oh. Matt Forte's fantasy owners don't like hearing this. If it does become more of a 50/50 split in Chicago then it would hurt the fantasy value of Forte. We'll wait to see if this actually happens before hitting the panic button.

Bears | Chester Taylor playing ultimate complement role    Fri Sep 17, 10:16 AM

The Chicago Bears have been happy so far with the play of RB Chester Taylor, who has served as a perfect complement to RB Matt Forte, according to ChicagoBears.com. Taylor generated 73 yards on 12 touches (nine rushes and three receptions) in Week 1. 'We had a chance to play against Chester a lot of years and really looked up to his football game,' head coach Lovie Smith said. 'We felt like he could give us what he's given us. Exactly what we thought he would be, we've seen, whether it's in pass protection or catching the ball out of the backfield.'

Footballguys view: Taylor's performance was overshadowed by Matt Forte's big game, but he looked very capable and will have a ton of value if Forte happens to miss time this year.

Bears | Matt Forte and Chester Taylor coexisting fine    Fri Aug 27, 03:52 AM

Chicago Bears RB Matt Forte has had nine carries for 114 yards during the preseason, with 89 of the yards coming on one carry, reports Jay Taft, of The Rockford Register Star. RB Chester Taylor has eight carries for 11 yards. The two spent most of the preseason talking about coexisting together in the same backfield. So far, it seems to be working out OK. 'It is working fine. I've been through this in Baltimore and Minnesota with Adrian Peterson and Jamal Lewis, so I know how to work well with another back in the backfield,' Taylor said. 'You have to help each other out in the backfield because it's going to be a long season.'

Bears | RB Unga signed, two released    Wed Jul 21, 12:15 PM

Adam Schefter, from ESPN, reports via Twitter that the Chicago Bears have signed RB Harvey Unga, and released DT Jimmy Saddler-McQueen and WR Vic Hall. Unga was selected in the seventh-round of the recent supplemental draft.

Footballguys view: Unga will battle with Khalil Bell and Garrett Wolfe to be the Bears third-string back behind Matt Forte and Chester Taylor. He's a proven receiver out of the backfield, but plays more like a pass catching fullback than a feature running back in our eyes. If Taylor and Forte stay healthy there's little chance of Unga doing much on the field this year.

Bears | Matt Forte not guaranteed starting job    Thu Jul 15, 12:25 PM

Chicago Bears RB Matt Forte has not been guaranteed the starting job this season but is expected to receive the first opportunity as the starter, according to Brad Biggs, of the Chicago Tribune. It is not known if Forte will be the team's third-down back or if that job will go to Chester Taylor.

Footballguys view: Mike Martz will abandon the running game on a whim, so it's a good thing that both Forte and Taylor are accomplished receivers out of the backfield. Forte is trying to bounce back from a poor season last year, but the Bears could easily replace him as the starter if he struggles. Chester Taylor was hand picked by the new regime, and many thought he was the offensive free agent gem this offseason. Taylor has the capability to be a fine feature back, and could play the 'Marshall Faulk' role in a Martz offense because of his versatility.

Bears | Matt Forte became stronger during offseason    Sun Jul 11, 12:51 PM

Chicago Bears RB Matt Forte worked hard during the offseason, improving on his lower body and upper body strength, according to running backs coach Tim Spencer on ChicagoBears.com. 'He made a point to get back and get his body in better shape,' Spencer said. Forte was healthy enough to play last year, but was rarely full speed due to injuries. Spencer said the team was looking for Forte to improve on his yards per carry and yards per catch last year, and they feel those will improve this season because Forte will be fresh. 'He won't have to take the entire load. He can share it,' Spencer said of Forte's role sharing touches with RB Chester Taylor. 'Chester will do well, and they can kind of feed off each other,' he added.

Footballguys view: Forte is still overvalued despite a very disappointing 2009. He may be on the field for the first play of the game, but this is an RBBC all the way, and in an offense that doesn't feature the running back. He may do more with his touches this year with improved strength and health, but the number of touches will be limited and keep Forte's production down.

Bears | Comfortable with Chester Taylor    Sun Jul 11, 12:49 PM

Chicago Bears running backs coach Tim Spencer said he feels good about the team's acquisition of RB Chester Taylor during the offseason, reports ChicagoBears.com. 'Chester is a smart football player. He's been around a long time, so he knows a lot about the little ins and outs. You don't have to teach him that. He studies the game. So from that aspect, you feel real comfortable about putting him in there. He is a veteran who has taken care of his body and doesn't have a lot of mileage on his body,' Spencer said.

Footballguys view: This is crucial in a Mike Martz offense because the running back is often the only thing between the QB and a blitzing linebacker. The Bears gave Taylor seven million guaranteed dollars even though he turns 31 during the season, so they'll make use of him.

Bears | Matt Forte not worried about Chester Taylor    Thu Jul 8, 01:25 PM

Chicago Bears RB Matt Forte is not threatened by the addition of RB Chester Taylor to the offense, according to The Chicago Sun-Times' Sean Jensen during an interview on SIRIUS/XM Fantasy Sports Radio. Forte is focused on improving this year after having a poor second season.

Footballguys view: Forte has to be considered the lead back at this time, but that could change quickly if he fails to bounce back or stay healthy. Taylor was hand selected by the Bears new staff on offense, and many considered him the offensive gem of the free agent class this year. Both backs are versatile (very important in a Mike Martz offense), but we'll have to see who gets the most reps as the first-team back in training camp.

Bears | Forte happy to have Taylor    Fri Jun 11, 04:25 PM

CBSSports.com notes a hamstring injury kept RB Matt Forte out of OTAs and part of training camp last year and a knee injury in Week 3 limited him through Week 17. He looks healthy now. "I feel a lot faster," he said Wednesday. "I actually went down to Florida and did some training, so I could redo the speed training and stuff that I did before that I didn't get to do because of my injuries." Forte said he never viewed the acquisition of Chester Taylor from Minnesota as a criticism of his 2009 production. "Competition is part of the game," Forte said. "If you're afraid of competition you shouldn't be playing, anyway, so I come out here and compete every day." But Forte, who continues handling first-team duties for the majority of offseason work, is glad to have Taylor on the team to help share the load. "It's not me vs. Chester," Forte said. "He's in here to help out the team, and I'm here to help out the team, too, to get to a championship. So that's what it is."

Footballguys view: Forte has to be considered the starter for now, but if he struggles we could see him quickly replaced by veteran Chester Taylor. The Bears handpicked Taylor in the offseason, and many considered him the offensive gem of the free agent class.

Bears | Forte to remain starting running back    Wed Mar 24, 10:20 AM

Sean Jensen, of the Chicago Sun-Times, reports via Twitter that Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith said RB Matt Forte will be the starting running back initially but that he will be in competition with RB Chester Taylor.

Footballguys view: Notice the use of the word "initially." Of course Forte is going to go into training camp as the starter, but that could change quickly. Chester Taylor is a more complete back than Forte, and because of his receiving ability he's a better fit in the Mike Martz scheme. The Bears will still use some sort of RBBC, but it wouldn't surprise us if Taylor was the starter when week one of the regular season rolled around.

NFL | Several teams expected to have interest in C. Taylor    Thu Mar 4, 11:59 AM

Judd Zulgad, of the Minneapolis Star Tribune, reports the Buffalo Bills, Chicago Bears, Denver Broncos, Houston Texans, Kansas City Chiefs and Pittsburgh Steelers are expected to show interest in Minnesota Vikings impending free-agent RB Chester Taylor, according to the NFL Network.

Footballguys view: The Bills could be getting rid of Marshawn Lynch, so they would need another back to compete with Fred Jackson. The Bears love Chester Taylor's versatility, and he could play the "Marshall Faulk" role in Mike Martz offense. The Broncos and Texans may feel they need another back to go along with the young players in their RB stable. The Chiefs have a serious need for depth behind Jamaal Charles, and Taylor could help keep Charles healthy by splitting carries down the middle. The Steelers have loved what former Vikings back Mewelde Moore has done in his time with the team, but could upgrade their "ultra-back" position behind Rashard Mendenhall.
