Cowboys | Devin Smith receives futures deal    Fri Jan 18, 04:08 PM

The Dallas Cowboys signed WR Devin Smith to a Reserve/Futures contract Friday, Jan. 18. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Smith was a second-round pick for the Jets out of Ohio State in 2015, but injuries derailed his career. He's only played in 14 games as a pro and was out of the league in 2018. Smith will be hard pressed to make the 53-man roster for the Cowboys.

Free-agent WR Devin Smith (Jets) worked out for the Green Bay Packers Friday, Dec. 28, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Smith has been looking for a home since the Jets released him in July. He's got plenty of speed but has struggled with injuries dating all the way back to his college career at Ohio State.

Texans | Houston hosts Devin Smith    Tue Nov 27, 05:56 PM

Free-agent Devin Smith (Jets) worked out for the Houston Texans Tuesday, Nov. 27.

Footballguys view: Smith has speed to burn but he's got a long injury history dating back to his days at Ohio State. The Texans are likely just updating their emergency list here.

Jets | Devin Smith not claimed    Tue Jul 17, 04:33 PM

Free-agent WR Devin Smith (Jets) cleared waivers Tuesday, July 17, and is officially a free agent.

Footballguys view: Smith has had injury problems dating back to his days in college at Ohio State. It's not a surprise no team decided to take a chance on the 2015 second-round pick. Smith only played in four games back in 2016 and missed all of the 2017 season dealing with a knee injury.

Jets | Devin Smith let go    Mon Jul 16, 01:26 PM

New York Jets WR Devin Smith was released Monday, July 16, according to a source.

Footballguys view: A second-round pick out of Ohio State in the 2015 NFL draft, Smith was a speedy wide receiver with a history of injury problems. Those issues continued in the NFL, and Smith only played in 14 games during three seasons with the Jets. He missed all of 2017 due to an ACL injury and was not participating in the team's offseason program. Smith will find it difficult to latch on with a new team when healthy.

Jets | Devin Smith, Charone Peake on the bubble    Sun Jul 1, 03:56 PM

New York Jets WRs Devin Smith and Charone Peake appear to be facing long odds to make the final roster, according to Darryl Slater of NJ.com.

Footballguys view: The Jets spent draft picks on both, but Smith suffered multiple serious knee injuries and Peake hasn't distinguished himself. The roster is crowded with receivers and both have an uphill battle to make it.

Jets | Devin Smith unlikely to make roster?    Sat Jun 2, 12:19 PM

New York Jets WR Devin Smith (knee) likely will not make the 53-man roster and could be released before the start of training camp, in the opinion of ESPNNewYork.com's Rich Cimini.

Footballguys view: Smith, a second-round pick out of Ohio State in 2016, has failed to play up to his potential in the pros. He was oft-injured in college, and that injury-proneness has followed him to the NFL. The Jets could clear up $1.2 million in cap space by getting rid of Smith.

Jets | Two Jets should be ready for camp    Tue May 29, 02:22 PM

New York Jets WR Devin Smith (shoulder) and S Marcus Maye (ankle) are expected to be healthy for the start of training camp, according to head coach Todd Bowles. Neither are expected to participate in organized team activities or minicamp, however.

Footballguys view: Smith has struggled to stay healthy during his pro career. Even dating back to his days in college at Ohio State, the speedy wide receiver has had problems staying healthy. He's buried on the depth chart right now, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see the 2015 second-round pick not make the team.

Jets | Devin Smith out for season    Sat Apr 29, 06:43 PM

Updating a previous report, New York Jets WR Devin Smith (knee) has undergone surgery to repair his torn anterior cruciate ligament and will miss the entire 2017 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Smith had terrible luck in his rookie year and just as he was trying to work his way back into the Jets plans after being a 2015 second round pick, he is going to be on the shelf for another season. With the Jets taking two quality receivers in this year's draft, there's no guarantee Smith will play a down for them again

Jets | Devin Smith may be active    Thu Dec 8, 02:11 PM

New York Jets WR Devin Smith has a good chance to be active for the team's Week 14 game, according to head coach Todd Bowles.

Footballguys view: Don't do it. Don't go anywhere near Smith or any Jet not named Brandon Marshall or Matt Forte. And even then, proceed with caution. The only upside here is Smith is probably playing for his job.

Jets | Devin Smith uncertain for Week 10    Sat Nov 12, 02:14 PM

New York Jets WR Devin Smith was activated off the Physically Unable to Perform earlier this week after recovering from a knee injury, but head coach Todd Bowles declined to say whether or not he would be active in Week 10 against the Los Angeles Rams.

Footballguys view: Smith has the speed to blow by defenders, but we're low on his prospects -- even in dynasty formats. In college at Ohio State, Smith dropped too many passes and was hurt a lot. So far with the Jets -- same as it ever was with the speedy receiver. When he's healthy (something he's struggled with) Smith shows inconsistent hands.

Jets | Devin Smith added to roster    Wed Nov 9, 02:09 PM

New York Jets WR Devin Smith (knee) was activated from the Physcially Unable to Perform list Wednesday, Nov. 9, and has been added to the active roster.

Footballguys view: Smith has the speed to take the top off the defense. However, the book hasn't changed on him from his days at Ohio State. In college, Smith was a speedy guy who was always hurt and dropped too many passes when he played. That's the same player he is today.

Jets | Devin Smith working his way back    Sat Oct 15, 12:39 AM

New York Jets WR Devin Smith (knee) said he has been running and cutting every day, and head coach Todd Bowles said Smith is a few weeks away from practicing in pads.

Footballguys view: The book on Smith at Ohio State was this; speedy WR who drops too many passes and is always banged up. That book is exactly the same now that he's in the pros.

Jets | Devin Smith placed on PUP    Sun Aug 28, 05:24 PM

New York Jets WR Devin Smith (knee) was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list Sunday, Aug. 28, as he continues to rehab from a torn ACL.

Footballguys view: A rookie from the group Jalin Marshall, Robby Anderson, and Charone Peake should make the opening day roster in Smith's spot. The deep-ball specialist probably won't make a big contribution this year. He was constantly hurt in college at Ohio State, and nothing has changed now that he's a pro.

Jets | Devin Smith not ready to play    Sat Aug 13, 10:18 AM

New York Jets WR Devin Smith (knee) said his body feels good but he is not ready to play in a game at this point because he needs to build his strength up. Smith has not been able to fully participate in a workout yet but can do some running and a little cutting. There is a chance that Smith could start the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list or the short-term Injured Reserve list, but he hopes to be ready for Week 1.

Footballguys view: Smith's book from Ohio State read like this; fast guy who drops too many passes and can't stay healthy. That book hasn't changed in the NFL.

Jets | Devin Smith placed on PUP list    Thu Jul 28, 02:35 PM

New York Jets WR Devin Smith (knee) was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list Thursday, July 28.

Footballguys view: Now on the PUP, you can officially drop him from your pre-draft lists. Yes, there is plenty of room for a new face to be the third receiver for the Jets but 1) they will get a fraction of the targets compared to Eric Decker and Brandon Marshall and 2) Smith struggled even before his injury. We would leave him off our roster.

Jets | Quincy Enunwa set to be third receiver?    Thu Jul 21, 03:10 PM

New York Jets WR Quincy Enunwa currently has the inside track on being the No. 3 wide receiver. He will battle with WRs Kenbrell Thompkins, Jalin Marshall and Devin Smith (knee) for roster spots and playing time behind WRs Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker.

Footballguys view: Smith is still banged up, Thompkins is a one-note receiver and Marshall is a UDFA who is built like a RB and is fairly raw. The third spot in the Jets passing offense has dubious fantasy potential, though Enunwa had the third most targets last season and managed mostly out of the slot in four-wide sets. He was inconsistent though and so at most he is a late round flier in this offense.

Jets | Devin Smith doubtful to start season    Sat May 28, 01:17 PM

New York Jets WR Devin Smith (knee) is considered doubtful to start the regular season and will begin training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list. Smith continues to recover from his torn anterior cruciate ligament and subsequent surgery.

Footballguys view: This is the book on Smith. He's super fast and can get open deep....but he's also a player who is rarely healthy...and even when he is healthy he drops too many passes. Even in deep dynasty leagues, we're not holding out much hope for Smith's pro career.

Jets | Devin Smith may not be ready    Thu May 5, 07:50 PM

New York Jets WR Devin Smith (knee) may not be ready for the start of the regular season as he continues to recover from anterior cruciate ligament surgery.

Footballguys view: Smith had trouble staying healthy in college, and that injury bug followed him to the pros as a rookie last year. Even when healthy, Smith is a speed guy who drops way too many passes.

Jets | Devin Smith tears ACL    Mon Dec 14, 05:07 PM

New York Jets WR Devin Smith (knee) is out for the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Jets | Devin Smith to be examined    Mon Dec 14, 02:06 PM

New York Jets WR Devin Smith (knee) will have his knee injury examined by an MRI exam Monday, Dec. 14, according to head coach Todd Bowles.

Jets | Devin Smith draws ire of coach    Mon Nov 23, 12:36 PM

New York Jets WR Devin Smith had four targets and no catches in the Week 11 loss to the Houston Texans, and head coach Todd Bowles was not happy with Smith afterwards. 'Our rookies have got to stop being rookies,' Bowles said when asked about Smith. 'They need to grow up. They get paid like everybody else and they've got to start acting like they're not in college anymore.'

Footballguys view: Smith was a deep target at Ohio State, and he's got the speed to get by defenders. However, he was also known for dropping plenty of passes. It seems like that inconsistency has carried over to the pros.
