Patriots | TE Henry Excited for Fresh Start    Thu Jul 13, 03:48 PM

Ben Volin, from the Boston Globe, reports New England Patriots TE Hunter Henry is excited for a fresh start under OC Bill O'Brien. "Me and Mac are close, we spend a good amount of time together, we've been throwing, getting after it, just trying to get ready to go. I think everyone's excited for a fresh start and a fresh season. Everybody will be fired up and be ready to go." Henry said.

Footballguys view: In 2021, Henry caught 50 passes for 603 yards and he had a career-high nine touchdown grabs. Henry saw his numbers decline to 41 catches for 509 yards with only two touchdowns in 2022. We should see more of an emphasis in the red zone, and that could boost the touchdown numbers for Henry again. Low-end TE1 production is there for Henry with a bounce-back season, but Fantasy GMs are taking him as a TE2 in the later rounds of most drafts.

Bengals | Four players released    Sat Sep 4, 01:24 PM

The Cincinnati Bengals have released WR Dezmon Briscoe, WR Matt Jones, PK Dave Rayner and SS Kyries Hebert, reports Joe Reedy, of The Cincinnati Enquirer.

Footballguys view: We're sad to see 'Dr. Rockzo' aka Matt Jones let go, but he simply didn't perform well enough after being out of football for the entire 2009 season. Dezmon Briscoe could be kept on the practice squad, but he needs to show a more fearless nature when running routes over the middle.

Bengals | Matt Jones dealing with injury    Wed Aug 4, 04:12 PM

Cincinnati Bengals WR Matt Jones (foot) is dealing with a bruised foot and will run Wednesday, Aug. 4, to see if he will be able to practice Thursday, Aug. 5, reports Bengals.com's Geoff Hobson.

Footballguys view: Dr. Rockso had better perform in training camp and the preseason or he could find himself standing next to former teammate Reggie Williams in the unemployment line.

Bengals | Matt Jones may be fighting for roster spot    Thu Jul 29, 03:44 AM

Cincinnati Bengals WR Matt Jones could be one of five receivers on the team's roster fighting for a single roster spot, reports Joe Reedy, of The Cincinnati Enquirer.

Footballguys view: Someone is getting pushed off the roster now that Terrell Owens is signed. Jones and Jerome Simpson could both be gone after training camp if they don't have an outstanding camp.

Bengals | Four to compete for final two WR spots    Mon Jul 19, 05:48 PM

Cincinnati Bengals WRs Jerome Simpson, Matt Jones, Dezmon Briscoe and Quan Cosby will compete for the final two wide receiver spots on the roster during training camp, reports Joe Reedy, of The Cincinnati Enquirer.

Footballguys view: Simpson has been a disappointment ever since he was a second-round draft pick in 2008 out of Coastal Carolina. Matt Jones is trying to make a comeback after spending last season out of the league. Briscoe is an athletic rookie, but is merely a deep threat as he's afraid to run routes over the middle. Cosby is the least athletically gifted out of this group, but gets by on his moxie, work ethic, and special teams ability.

NFL | League to be featured in cartoon    Mon Jun 28, 04:36 PM

The Associated Press reports the NFL is getting animated. The league's players and coaches will lend their voices to a series of short cartoons for Nickelodeon's Nicktoons channel. "Rush Zone: Guardians of the Core" is based on the league's website for kids. Among the stars set to do voiceovers as themselves are New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning and New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton. The show is about a 10-year-old boy whose superpowers include the skills of an NFL player. He must protect valuable supernatural objects hidden in the league's stadiums. The series will end with a one-hour movie to air the day before the Super Bowl.

Footballguys view: If there's a cameo appearance (or featured super villian role) by Dr. Rockzo then this will be the greatest show ever.

Bengals | Marvin Lewis impressed with Matt Jones    Wed May 12, 05:44 PM

Geoff Hobson, of Bengals.com, reports Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said he has been impressed with how WR Matt Jones has performed this offseason and believes he will be able to help the offense. 'I've been impressed with him. It's going to be fun to watch. He's feeling good about himself. He's got the quarterbacks feeling good about his abilities. We've got to get things to help him help us,' Lewis said,

Footballguys view: Matt Jones has always had the size and athletic ability to be a factor in the NFL, and he flashed signs of that during his time with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Off the field was where Jones had his problems, and that's why he spent last season out of football. Jones gives Carson Palmer another weapon in the passing game to go along with Chad Ochocinco, Antonio Bryant, Jordan Shipley, and Jermaine Gresham. He's been working hard to get back onto the field, so let's hope Dr. Rockzo can keep it clean off the field as well.

Bengals | M. Jones not guaranteed anything    Sat Feb 20, 06:00 PM

Geoff Hobson, of Bengals.com, reports Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said WR Matt Jones has to earn his way onto the final roster next season. 'We're not locked into him. We're only investing in his chance for him to make it. That's what you should be doing this time of year,' Lewis said.

Footballguys view: Matt Jones reportedly had a bad workout for the Bengals, but the team felt it was worth signing him anyway. He was out of football last season, and will have to prove he belongs back in the NFL once he shakes off the rust.

Bengals | Will use M. Jones at TE?    Thu Feb 18, 11:51 AM

Ken Paxson, of the Dayton Daily News, reports the Cincinnati Bengals are planning on using WR Matt Jones at tight end, sources have told the Daily News' Carlos Holmes.

Footballguys view: Jones would be capable of playing the position and he could be their "super sized" wide receiver lining up at tight end. This would likely mean the Bengals may not be interested in a tight end (like OU's Jermaine Gresham) in the first-round of the 2010 NFL Draft.

Chris Mortensen, of ESPN, reports the Chicago Bears, New York Jets, Dallas Cowboys and Miami Dolphins have shown interest in free-agent WR Matt Jones (Jaguars), according to sources.

Chris Mortensen, of ESPN, reports free-agent WR Matt Jones (Jaguars) will work out for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Tuesday, Oct. 13, according to league sources.

Footballguys view: The Bucs are disappointed in veteran Michael Clayton because he's been plagued by dropped passes this year. Rookie Sammie Stroughter could have a bright future as a slot receiver, but he needs to be more consistent. Adding Matt Jones could give quarterback Josh Johnson another big play target to go along with Kellen Winslow and Antonio Bryant.

Jaguars | Jones-Drew wearing wrap on right arm    Mon Sep 14, 07:24 PM

Vic Ketchman, of Jaguars.com, reports that RB Maurice Jones-Drew was wearing a wrap on his right arm, wrist, and forearm when he met with the media on Monday, September 14. Jones-Drew did not discuss the nature of the injury or when it occurred.

Footballguys view: We expect Jones-Drew to be ok for next week, but this underscores the punishment MJD will be taking all year. He was basically the entire offense against the Colts, and the Indy D unloaded on him time after time. Unless the Jags get some balance on offense, MJD will become more and more likely to break down as the season goes on.

Jaguars | Jones-Drew MRI is negative    Fri Sep 4, 09:18 PM

Adam Schefter, from ESPN, reports on his twitter feed that MRI on running back Maurice Jones-Drew's "lower extremity" is negative. It's only a bruise. Jones-Drew is fine.

Footballguys view: Jaguars fans and fantasy owners can breathe a sigh of relief here. Jones-Drew should be ready to go for the season opener against the Colts, a team that Jacksonville has historically hammered with their ground game.

Jaguars | X-rays negative on Jones-Drew's leg, MRI to come    Fri Sep 4, 12:26 AM

The Associated Press reports that bruised his lower right leg on Thursday, September 3 against the Washington Redskins. X-rays of Jones-Drew's leg were negative, but a precautionary MRI was scheduled for Friday. "He had a 'UFC shot' to the shin or lower leg and it's bruised," head coach Jack Del Rio said. "Maurice was a little frustrated by the hit and he wanted to get his hands on the guy, I can tell you that." QB David Garrard said he thought Jones-Drew will be "ready to roll" for next week's season opener.

Footballguys view: Jones-Drew should not be bumped down on your board. He actually played through some lower leg injuries last year, and played well.

Bears | Have expressed interest in M. Jones    Wed Sep 2, 05:42 PM

Adam Schefter, of ESPN, reports the Chicago Bears have expressed interest in unrestricted free-agent WR Matt Jones (Jaguars).

Footballguys view: Wow, we get to the end of the preseason and all of a sudden there's a demand for Matt Jones! Any of the team's interested (Titans, Cowboys, Bears) make a lot of sense for the big veteran wideout. The Bears have one of the least exciting WR corps in the game today. There is some talent on the roster behind Devin Hester, but it is all unproven up to this point. Jones is a veteran that could become a consistent (and favorite) target of Jay Cutler.

Cowboys | Have expressed interest in M. Jones    Wed Sep 2, 05:30 PM

Adam Schefter, of ESPN, reports the Dallas Cowboys have expressed interest in unrestricted free-agent WR Matt Jones (Jaguars).

Footballguys view: Wow, we get to the end of the preseason and all of a sudden there's a demand for Matt Jones! Any of the team's interested (Titans, Cowboys, Bears) make a lot of sense for the big veteran wideout. The Cowboys have inexperienced receivers behind Roy Williams and Patrick Crayton, and could decide to bring in another former Razorback.

Titans | Scheduled to work out M. Jones Thursday    Wed Sep 2, 05:11 PM

Brad Biggs, of the National Football Post, reports the Tennessee Titans are scheduled to work out unrestricted free-agent WR Matt Jones (Jaguars) Thursday, Sept. 3.

Footballguys view: Teams have stayed away from Jones because his off field antics make Dr. Rockzo look like Mary Poppins. In all seriousness, the Titans could be looking for some help at wideout because of the injury to Nate Washington. Jones is a veteran, and actually seemed to be finally playing up to his potential in 2008.

Larry Mayer, from ChicagoBears.com, reports Matt Jones' representatives may have contacted the Bears, but the Bears are not interested in signing the former Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver at this time.

Footballguys view: Dr. Rockzo will have to look for work elsewhere. However, if the Bears are not happy with their WR corps in camp - or injuries plague their receivers, the team could quickly change it's mind.

Cowboys | Still not interested in Matt Jones    Thu Jul 30, 07:30 PM

Tim MacMahon, of the Dallas Morning News, reports that the Cowboys have indeed been in contact with Matt Jones agent - to tell them that they are still not interested. "We're very happy with our situation there (at WR)," Cowboys executive VP Stephen Jones said.

Footballguys view: That leaves the Titans, Bears, and Jets from Jones list. We still expect him to play this year, and we think he proved he could be a starting quality WR last year.

NFL | M. Jones says agent has spoken with several teams    Thu Jul 30, 12:35 PM

Jeff Dickerson, of ESPNChicago.com, reports unrestricted free-agent WR Matt Jones (Jaguars) said during a radio interview that his agent has spoken with the New York Jets, Tennessee Titans, Chicago Bears and Dallas Cowboys. He believes he will sign with a team sooner rather than later.

Footballguys view: Matt Jones will be back in the NFL soon, but teams are cautiously optimistic when considering him for their roster. We would recommend getting your trade offers out there in dynasty leagues now, because Jones is a starting quality WR, and he could threaten to start for any of those four teams.

NFL | M. Jones' agent says he has talked to some team    Fri Jul 17, 12:27 PM

Michael C. Wright, of The Florida Times-Union, reports Dave Butz, agent for unrestricted free-agent WR Matt Jones (Jaguars), said he has spoken with several teams about Jones but nothing concrete is imminent.

Footballguys view: We expect him to be on a roster this year, and probably get a chance to start unless he's on a team that is well off enough at WR to relegate him to #5 duties. He has more potential this year than some of the wideouts that are going late in drafts right now.

NFL | M. Jones training hard as he looks for second chance    Thu Jul 16, 08:23 PM

Michael C. Wright, of The Florida Times-Union, reports free-agent WR Matt Jones (Jaguars) has spent more than $15,000 to train in seclusion with a team of specialists while at IMG Academies. Jones' agent, Dave Butz, said he has spoken with several teams about possible interest in Jones, but nothing appears imminent. Butz said, "We've had dialogue with multiple teams. I think [his prospects for catching on with a new team] are excellent. We're excited now to find the best fit for Matt. He's scot-free as far as punishment and ready to have a great year."

Footballguys view: We think Jones is very undervalued in dynasty leagues right now. He emerged as a #1 wide receiver for the Jags last year, and the transgression that caused the team to release him was minor compared a lot of things that players have done (and still remained with the team). Soon enough, he will sign with a team in need of a wide receiver and he won't come nearly as cheap in deep leagues.

Ravens | With Suggs deal done is a WR next?    Wed Jul 15, 01:51 PM

James Walker, from ESPN.com, reports now that Suggs is under contract expect the Ravens to immediately shift their focus to the wide receivers in an attempt to fill a huge void Mason left behind.

Footballguys view: There are a number of different directions the Ravens could go, and they must now be exploring all their options. Marvin Harrison, Matt Jones, Plaxico Burress, Ashley Lelie, Jerry Porter, and Amani Toomer could all be considered as well as possibly trading for Anquan Boldin, Braylon Edwards, or Brandon Marshall.   NFL | M. Jones out of drug program    Tue Jul 7, 10:49 AM

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports free-agent WR Matt Jones (Jaguars) is free to resume his NFL career now that his graduation from Washington County Drug Court has wiped away a felony drug charge.

Footballguys view: Circuit Court Judge Mary Ann Gunn warned Jones Monday, July 6, that since he has completed the program, drug court is no longer an option if he is arrested again. Jones will remain in the league's substance abuse program until 2010.

Clarence E. Hill Jr., of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, reports Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has ruled out the possibility of signing unrestricted free-agent WR Matt Jones (Jaguars).

Footballguys view: The Cowboys would seemingly be a good fit for Jones with their current opening at the starting wide receiver spot opposite Roy Williams, so this is a bit surprising. Jones will still latch on somewhere. He really turned the corner last year, playing much more physical and running better routes, so don't be surprised if he's relevant for fantasy again in 2009.

Cowboys | No interest in M. Jones    Mon Jun 8, 11:52 AM

Clarence E. Hill Jr., of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, reports Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said the team has no interest in free-agent WR Matt Jones (Jaguars).

Footballguys view: We've heard this report before, but Jerry Jones is known to give troubled players a second chance and perhaps he'll change his mind about Matt Jones. If the Cowboys owner is willing to give Adam Jones another chance then why not Matt Jones? If the interest is just not there Dr. Rockzo will have to look elsewhere for a playing gig.

Footballguys view: Angelo added, "Guys make mistakes, move on, and become better people. Some guys have patterns of bad behavior and continue to have those patterns. I'm not saying that about Matt Jones. What I'm saying is we have to do our homework. And then you have to look at what value that person brings to your football team irrelevant of his off-the-field issues." Looks like no "Dr. Rockzo" in Chicago.
