Steelers | Roster reduced to 58 Fri Sep 2, 04:40 PM
The Pittsburgh Steelers placed QB Byron Leftwich (arm) on the Reserve/Injured list Friday, Sept. 2, and also released LBs Baraka Atkins, Mario Harvey, Chris McCoy and Mortty Ivy, DL Corbin Bryant, DBs Brett Greenwood, Macho Harris, Donovan Warren and DaMon Cromartie-Smith, RBs James X. Johnson and John Clay, OLs Colin Miller, Kyle Jolly, John Malecki, Trevis Turner and Keith Williams, WRs Armand Robinson, Wes Lyons and Tyler Grisham, TE Jamie McCoy and PK Swayze Waters.
Footballguys view: Grisham has been a Steelers camp hand as a good possession receiver for a few years running now. He could be signed by another team. Harvey, Lyons, and Robinson are good practice squad candidates. |

Packers | James Johnson improving Tue Sep 14, 12:43 PM
Green Bay Packers RB James X. Johnson has been improving in practice and could be activated from the practice squad, reports the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Lori Nickel. 'He's coming along,' said running backs coach Edgar Bennett. 'He's getting better day in and day out and he's come along at a pretty rapid pace.' However, Johnson has only been with the Packers for a week, and Green Bay could also look outside the organization. Head coach Mike McCarthy doesn't plan on making a roster decision until the full extent of RB Ryan Grant's (ankle) injury is known.
Footballguys view: Johnson is a versatile back with decent size and good hands to catch passes out of the backfield. He lacks burst, quickness, and explosion when running the football as he is more of a grind-it-out runner. |

Johnson, DT Clinton McDonald, S Rico Murray, WR Maurice Purify, G Otis Hudson, OT Gabriel Manns, S Jeromy Miles, LB Vincent Rey, OT Chris Rodgers, CB Johnny Sears and FB Joe Tronzo.
Footballguys view: Chase Coffman was once thought to be the answer at the tight end position for the Bengals, but he failed to stay healthy and impress during his time in Cincinnati. |

Bengals | Two RBs competing for roster spot Sat Aug 28, 05:13 PM
Cincinnati Bengals RBs Cedric Peerman and James X. Johnson are competing for the final running back spot on the roster, reports The Cincinnati Enquirer's Joe Reedy.
Footballguys view: Both backs are effective receivers out of the backfield, but we like Peerman's overall game better. Peerman is a very instinctive runner who runs with a good pad level and low center of gravity which makes him difficult to arm tackle. |

Bengals | James Johnson signed Tue Aug 10, 02:05 PM
The Cincinnati Bengals have signed unrestricted free-agent RB James X. Johnson (Vikings), reports The Cincinnati Enquirer's Joe Reedy. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Vikings | RB Johnson could provide more competition behind ADP Thu Apr 1, 10:19 AM
Scout.com reports the Vikings signed the former Kansas State running back James Johnson to a futures contract in January in hopes of bringing some competition to the offensive backfield.
Footballguys view: With Chester Taylor now playing for the Bears, it leaves a big hole in the RB corps behind starter Adrian Peterson. Currently they have Albert Young listed as the second-string back, but he's likely to face competition from Johnson and a RB the Vikings select in the 2010 NFL Draft. Johnson is a versatile back that can be effectively used as a receiver out of the backfield. |

Joe Reedy, of the Cincinnati Enquirer, reports the Cincinnati Bengals have re-signed free agents TE Darius Hill, RB James X. Johnson, SS Corey Lynch, DT Clinton McDonald, FB Chris Pressley, WR Maurice Purify, OG Jason Shirley and LB Dan Skuta to their practice squad.
Footballguys view: Purify continues to intrigue us because he was so dominant at times during his collegiate career at Nebraska. |

Bengals | Announce roster cuts Sat Sep 5, 03:12 PM

Johnson, DT Clinton McDonald, OG Jason Shirley, FB Fui Vakapuna and SS Marvin White.
Footballguys view: Both Brian Leonard and DeDe Dorsey made the team, so they will go into the season with four RBs. UDFA WR/KR Quan Cosby also made the team. |

Bengals | Crowded at RB behind Benson Fri Jun 19, 08:28 PM
James Walker, from ESPN.com, notes that currently there is a crowded field behind starter Cedric Benson, who is one of the few locks at the position to make the team. After Benson, tailbacks such as James Johnson, DeDe Dorsey, Kenny Watson and Bernard Scott all will be vying for carries and roster spots this season. In addition, Brian Leonard is versatile enough to split time at fullback and tailback to take reps away from the aforementioned group, making for an even tighter competition.
Footballguys view: Watson, Dorsey, and Leonard have not shown the ability to stay healthy during their time in the NFL. James Johnson and rookie Bernard Scott are unproven, but we like the rookie most in this competition behind Cedric Benson. Walker also notes in the article that the Bengals could be looking for a good receiving back to add another dimension to their offense. Scott is a perfect fit for that role as well. Everybody in the scouting community loves what they see from Scott on the field. It's the off field behavior - 4 different colleges, 5 arrests - that caused him to fall to the 6th round. He has good instincts for running the football and can use his quickness effectively on screen passes and draw plays. |
