Raiders | Roy Helu released from IR    Tue Aug 2, 05:24 PM

Oakland Raiders RB Roy Helu (hip) was released from the Reserve/Injured list with an injury settlement Tuesday, Aug. 2.

Footballguys view: Helu is now free to sign with any team, but we can't imagine anyone lined up for his services. He's a decent receiving back when healthy, but his body seems to be broken down. Perhaps we've seen the end of Helu in the NFL.

Raiders | Roy Helu released    Fri Jul 29, 05:13 PM

Oakland Raiders RB Roy Helu was released Friday, July 29.

Footballguys view: Fifth round pick DeAndre Washington's path to the passing down role is clear now. If he can flash on his touches there, he could to cut into Latavius Murray's starter workload. He's one of the best rookie running backs to target in the second half of drafts.

Raiders | Roy Helu placed on PUP list    Mon Jul 25, 08:44 PM

Oakland Raiders RB Roy Helu (hip) was put on the active/physically unable to perform list Monday, July 25.

Footballguys view: Helu can come off the PUP list at any time during camp, and the team will monitor him closely as he continues to recover. He's certainly on the roster bubble, so he'll need to get healthy and impress in camp if he wants a spot on the 53-man roster.

Raiders | Roy Helu may be on bubble    Wed Jul 20, 06:10 PM

Oakland Raiders RB Roy Helu (hip) may be on the roster bubble during training camp because RBs DeAndre Washington and Jalen Richard have similar skill sets to Helu. Helu also missed all of the offseason workouts because of his hip injury.

Footballguys view: We could see the Raiders moving on from Helu if the young RBs show well in camp and the preseason. We really like Washington here. He's a compact runner who was among the leaders in the FBS in rush-yards-after-contact-per-rush average (for 1,000-yard rushers) at 2.7 yards. Washington is dangerous in space and can be used effectively as a receiver out of the backfield.

Raiders | Roy Helu expected to be ready for camp    Thu Jun 23, 01:27 AM

Oakland Raiders RB Roy Helu (hip) did not participate in the team's offseason program as he recovered from offseason hip surgery, but head coach Jack Del Rio said Wednesday, June 22, that he expects Helu to be ready to go for training camp.

Footballguys view: Helu will be fighting fifth-round pick DeAndre Washington for a receiving back role. While Helu has had his moments over the years, his inability to stay healthy has kept him from getting a long-term foothold in his backfield.

Raiders | Roy Helu listed as third RB    Wed Sep 9, 03:05 PM

Oakland Raiders RB Roy Helu is listed as the No. 3 running back behind RBs Latavius Murray and Taiwan Jones.

Footballguys view: An interesting move by the Raiders here. Helu could work well as a pass-catching back, but it could actually be Jones in that role. Jones has switched back and forth between running back and cornerback. He's back at running back, and Jones has obviously impressed the new coaching staff if he's second-string to begin the year.

Raiders | Taiwan Jones listed as backup RB    Tue Sep 8, 03:32 PM

Oakland Raiders RB Taiwan Jones is currently listed ahead of RB Roy Helu as RB Latavius Murray's backup.

Footballguys view: It's unlikely that the backups get much play anyway, but it's a bit surprising as many thought Helu would be a third down guy for the Raiders. That could still be the case, but neither he nor Jones are really worth a roster spot right now.

Raiders | Roy Helu returns to practice    Wed Aug 26, 03:13 PM

Oakland Raiders RB Roy Helu (undisclosed) returned to practice Wednesday, Aug. 26.

Footballguys view: Keep an eye on Helu here. Fantasy owners in deep leagues should keep him on waiver-wire speed dial. He's capable as a runner and a good receiver out of the backfield. Helu may be in line for more touches than some think as the team's change-of-pace back behind Latavius Murray.

Raiders | Roy Helu good with hands    Wed Jul 8, 04:54 PM

Oakland Raiders RB Roy Helu was one of two running backs with at least 40 targets last season that caught 89% of those targets. Helu caught 42 of his 44 targets. The other running back was Philadelphia Eagles RB DeMarco Murray.

Footballguys view: Helu could lead the Raiders RBs in catches, but that still might not be enough for us to care about him outside of the late rounds of best ball PPR leagues. The Raiders backfield will be split two or three ways and the offense will certainly in the bottom half of the league.

Raiders | Roy Helu impressing coach    Sun Jul 5, 11:20 PM

Oakland Raiders RB Roy Helu had an 'outstanding' offseason and showed good quickness, awareness and hands, according to offensive line coach Mike Tice.

Footballguys view: Some in the fantasy world were excited at the prospect of Helu getting more opportunity after signing elsewhere in free agency. While he did land on a team without an established feature back, it seems unlikely that Helu will overtake both Latavius Murray and Trent Richardson to get more than passing down work. He has appeal as a late-round best ball running back because of his receiving ability, but that's about while Helu is mired in a poor offense behind two bigger runners.

Raiders | Richardson sheds weight    Sun Jul 5, 07:56 PM

Oakland Raiders RB coach Mike Tice sat down to talk to Sirius XM Radio, and said free agent pickup Trent Richardson "lost some weight, his quickness came around." He also praised Latavius Murray "really came on in that veteran mini-camp. He got his legs under him and showed some quickness, some good finish" and free agent signing Roy Helu's receiving ability was noted.

Footballguys view: Richardson seemed sluggish compared to the back he was at Alabama, so let's see if he looks more spry in training camp and the preseason. Murray is the likely leader in touches in the backfield. but Helu will have a role and Richardson has a way of getting coaches to feed him touches even when makes them worthless. Oakland's offense is no prize, so the luster on Murray beyond his measureables continues to fade.

Raiders | Raiders still in on DeMarco Murray    Wed Mar 11, 01:09 AM

Free-agent RB DeMarco Murray (Cowboys) is still a target for the Oakland Raiders despite the RB Roy Helu Jr. deal, a source said Tuesday, March 10.

Footballguys view: The Raiders have to spend their money on something other than a center. Still, it looks like Murray is much more likely to land with the Jaguars or Cowboys right now.

Raiders | Roy Helu joining Oakland    Tue Mar 10, 09:04 PM

Free-agent RB Roy Helu (Redskins) has agreed to terms with the Oakland Raiders on a two-year deal worth a little more than $4 million, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Helu joins the Raiders as a reserve running back. He can back up Latavius Murray and give them a good change-of-pace back as a receiver out of the backfield. We'll see if the Raiders will also pick up superstar DeMarco Murray as they're reported to be interested.

Redskins | Roy Helu injured    Sun Sep 14, 03:54 PM

Washington Redskins RB Roy Helu (knee) suffered a left knee injury Week 2 and will not return to the game.

Redskins | Roy Helu may have advantage over Evan Royster    Mon Jul 21, 06:28 PM

Washington Redskins RB Roy Helu Jr. is seen as a better pass catcher than RB Evan Royster by some of the coaches, which should help his chance to make the final roster.

Footballguys view: Helu does have an advantage, especially under new head coach Jay Gruden. He's a fine receiver out of the backfield and has good run-after-the-catch ability.

Redskins | Third-down back position battle    Thu Jul 3, 05:38 PM

Washington Redskins RB Roy Helu will receive competition from RBs Chris Thompson and Lache Seastrunk for the role of third-down running back. Helu is criticized for rarely getting more than what defenses give him, and the coaching regime who selected him out of college are no longer with the organization. It is expected Helu will win the job because the other two are unproven in pass-protection situations at the NFL level.

Footballguys view: Helu started out his Washington career hot, but has since been fairly average. We're backing Seastrunk for the third-down job but as this piece points out, neither Seastrunk nor Thompson are much use pass-blocking right now. Down the road though, Helu will lose this job. Helu is the most rosterable right now, but as no more than a RB5 on a good day. Seastrunk is a later round pick in fantasy drafts, no better than an RB5 or RB6 though he has upside. Thompson has virtually no value for fantasy purposes.

Washington Redskins RB Roy Helu will see his base salary increase from $645,000 in 2013 to $1,389,000 in 2014.

Washington Redskins RB Roy Helu carried 11 times for 41 yards and three touchdowns in the Week 7 game against the Chicago Bears, and he added one reception for five yards.

Footballguys view: Helu isn't taking over as the goal line back. He was on the field in the package that was moving the ball and got the opportunities against a short-handed Bears defense. Alfred Morris still looked great and is gaining value with Robert Griffin III warming up.

Redskins | Not giving up on running game    Fri Oct 11, 05:21 PM

The Washington Redskins remain committed to RB Alfred Morris and the running game, despite the fact that they are averaging only 22.25 running plays per game compared to 32.43 last season. Morris' 5.3 yards per carry in 2013 are higher than his first four games last season, but he's only averaging 14 carries per contest, and his 296 rushing yards ranks him as tied for 16th in the league. Two blowout losses forced the 'Skins to abandon the running game early. 'We believe in the running game,' head coach Mike Shanahan said.

Footballguys view: That Morris has still been a solid to good RB play each week despite these conditions is a testament to the quality of his play. He is probably a bit undervalued, as Morris's production approaches an elite level when the Washington offense is on track.

Redskins | Roy Helu wins No. 2 RB job    Wed Aug 28, 12:46 PM

Washington Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said Tuesday, Aug. 27, that RB Roy Helu has secured the primary backup job behind RB Alfred Morris.

Footballguys view: Helu has looked good this preaseason. He works well in the Pistol offense and is decisive when he makes a cut. Helu isn't as fast as rookie Chris Thompson (Florida State) but he is more dependable as a runner and receiver out of the backfield.

Redskins | Roy Helu to be third-down back    Sun Aug 18, 08:46 PM

Washington Redskins RB Roy Helu will be used as the third-down back, which will showcase his pass blocking and his ability to catch the ball.

Footballguys view: Helu has bonafide handcuff value because the Redskins are about as good on the ground as any team in the league. He has stayed healthy through training camp and the preseason to this point, and Helu presents a ton of upside if Alfred Morris goes down. He might even have matchup flex value in PPR leagues.
