Giants | Rhett Ellison capable of producing    Fri Sep 28, 09:10 PM

New York Giants TE Rhett Ellison's three receptions in Week 3 all came after TE Evan Engram (knee) left the game, and Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com expects Ellison to 'provide steady production' as the starter against the New Orleans Saints in Week 4.

Footballguys view: Ellison looked good last week but we can't trust him as anything more than a low-end TE2 for Fantasy GMs in Week 4. A fourth-round pick (USC) for the Vikings in the 2012 NFL draft, Ellison has always been more known as a blocker and not much of a receiving threat.

Giants | Rhett Ellison improving    Sat Aug 25, 01:55 PM

New York Giants TE Rhett Ellison (migraines) has been diagnosed with a migraine and is feeling better, according to head coach Pat Shurur.

Footballguys view: Ellison doesn't have much fantasy value. He's the second-string tight end for the Giants behind Evan Engram. We should see Engram put up strong TE1 numbers this year as a snap and target hog for the Giants offense. That doesn't leave much for anyone behind him on the depth chart.

Giants | Kyle Carter could be No. 2 TE    Sat Jul 7, 09:40 PM

New York Giants TE Kyle Carter could end up winning the No. 2 tight end job this season, according to Matt Lombardo of NJ Advance Media, and Lombardo believes TE Rhett Ellison, TE Ryan O'Malley and FB Shane Smith are also in the mix.

Footballguys view: Carter was part of the Vikings organization on the practice squad for a good part of the last two years, so he knows Pat Shurmur's system. The Giants have an underwhelming group at wide receiver after Odell Beckham and Sterling Shepard, so two tight end sets could be used frequently.

Giants | NYG expected to use two-TE sets    Fri Jul 6, 06:57 PM

New York Giants TEs Evan Engram and Rhett Ellison likely will be on the field at the same time this season because the team is expected to use more two-tight end sets.

Footballguys view: Engram had a tremendous rookie year and wasn't even fully formed. He should be better this year, but now he has more competition, as Odell Beckham Jr. has returned, and Saquon Barkley was drafted. We'll keep an eye on him and see how he looks in camp, but we feel his ADP of No. 6 tight end off the board is right on.

Giants | Week 17 game recap for Giants    Sun Dec 31, 04:58 PM

New York Giants QB Eli Manning completed just 10-of-28 pass attempts for 132 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the Week 17 game against the Washington Redskins. RB Orleans Darkwa rolled up a career-high 154 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries, while RB Wayne Gallman added 89 yards on 15 carries. TE Rhett Ellison posted five grabs for 63 yards, while WR Hunter Sharp stepped in with three catches, 29 yards and a touchdown to lead the wide receivers. WR Travis Rudolph also had 29 yards on his lone reception.

Footballguys view: The Giants running game pulled the offense to victory in a consolation win capping one of the most disappointing seasons for the team in a long time. There's still a chance Manning will be back to quarterback the team next year.

Giants | Week 16 injury report for NYG    Fri Dec 22, 05:17 PM

New York Giants LB B.J. Goodson (ankle) and WR Tavarres King (concussion) did not practice Friday, Dec. 22, and they're ruled out for Week 16 against the Arizona Cardinals. S Nat Berhe (hamstring), S Landon Collins (ankle) and DE Jason Pierre-Paul (finger) were limited and are listed as questionable, while CB Brandon Dixon (heel, hamstring), TE Rhett Ellison (groin, finger), OT Ereck Flowers (groin), C Brett Jones (ankle), WR Travis Rudolph (hamstring), S Darian Thompson (knee) and DE Olivier Vernon (not injury related) were removed from the report.

Footballguys view: King being out means that while there are more targets for Roger Lewis and Sterling Shepard, there's also more chance that they'll be covered by Patrick Peterson on any given play. Shepard lines up in the slot, so he's the best Giants wide receiver play this week.

Giants | Rhett Ellison listed as starter    Tue Sep 5, 04:56 PM

New York Giants TE Rhett Ellison is listed as the starting tight end on the team's depth chart for Week 1.

Footballguys view: Ellison may be the starter but he's mostly going to be a blocking tight end. Rookie Evan Engram (first-round pick, Ole Miss) could catch the most passes at the position even though he's not the starter to begin the season.

Rhett Ellison player page

Giants | Evan Engram listed as backup    Sun Aug 6, 06:32 PM

New York Giants TE Evan Engram is listed as the second-team tight end on the team's first depth chart. TE Rhett Ellison is listed as the starter at tight end.

Footballguys view: This tells you a few things, chief of which is that the Giants are worried about blocking at the tackles. Ellison is primarily a blocker, though he can catch the ball on occasion. While Engram is likely to still be adjusting to the playbook, routes and general day to day action of the Giants, he's probably a better receiver for the most part than Ellison. But when you have Ereck Flowers and Bobby Hart on the edge of your offensive line, blocking means more and Ellison is better than Engram in that arena, hands down. Of course, as many Footballguys staff who have covered training camp can tell you, the first depth chart is of questionable value. So this is definitely not anything to panic about if you own Engram in dynasty. We'll watch camp closely because the key to the skill players producing is all about that offensive line and pass protection.

Giants | Rhett Ellison headed to NYG    Thu Mar 9, 04:21 PM

Minnesota Vikings impending free-agent TE Rhett Ellison agreed to terms with the New York Giants on Thursday, March 9, on a four-year, $18 million contract, including an $8 million signing bonus.

Footballguys view: We see this more as a way to shore up a bad offensive line. Ellison can run the ball and catch it as well, but he's a better blocker than an offensive threat. A hybrid fullback/tight end, the Giants could get creative with him though.

Vikings | Rhett Ellison activated    Tue Aug 23, 11:33 AM

Minnesota Vikings TE Rhett Ellison (knee) was activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list Tuesday, Aug. 23.

Footballguys view: Wow. Ellison tore his patellar tendon in January, and to recover this much in eight months is amazing. He'll snare around 15-20 passes this year for the Vikings as a reserve TE if healthy. The team is deep at the position, so there's no need to rush him back even with his shocking recovery.
