The San Francisco 49ers have signed free-agent CB Eric Wright (Buccaneers) to a one-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed. The team also released CB Lowell Rose.

Footballguys view: The 49ers promptly placed Wright (undisclosed) on the Non-Football Injury list. The team made a trade with the Buccaneers for Wright about three weeks ago, but he failed his physical and was released. After losing CB3 Chris Culliver (knee) there is now an opening for Wright when he's healthy. He'll battle guys like Nnamdi Asomugha and Perrish Cox for that spot.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will release CB Eric Wright. Wright's trade to the San Francisco 49ers was voided because he failed a physical.

San Francisco 49ers general manager Trent Baalke was told by Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik about CB Eric Wright's arrest before the 49ers traded for Wright.

Footballguys view: The 49ers know what kind of a risk Wright is and that's why they were able to add him for such a low price. It's a low risk, potentially high reward situation for the 49ers.

49ers | See Eric Wright as low-risk addition    Fri Jul 19, 08:01 PM

The San Francisco 49ers believe trading for CB Eric Wright is a low-risk acquisition because they will have to pay his $1.5 million salary only if he makes the final roster.

Footballguys view: Wright is a talented player but one that comes with plenty of off field baggage. Last Friday he was arrested on suspicion of DUI in Los Angeles. The Bucs were considering releasing Wright before they secured a late round pick for him from the 49ers.

49ers | Eric Wright acquired    Fri Jul 19, 03:59 PM

The San Francisco 49ers have acquired CB Eric Wright from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a conditional late-round draft choice.

Footballguys view: This is a bit of a surprise, as Wright was still slated to start, although his recent DUI arrest was probably the last straw. It was the second of Wright's career, but the first one was dismissed. Tampa is probably relegated to starting rookie second-round pick Johnthan Banks opposite Darrelle Revis, who is recovering from an ACL tear. The team does have a dynamic duo of Dashon Golson and Mark Barron at safety, but expect to see Drew Brees and Matt Ryan test Banks early and often in matchups.

Buccaneers | Johnthan Banks could be nickel back    Fri Jul 19, 12:38 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers CB Johnthan Banks could be the team's nickel back in 2013, according to Stephen Holder of the Tampa Bay Times. Holder points out that the team restructured CB Eric Wright's contract for 2013, so it would make sense to have a veteran across from CB Darrelle Revis. This would give the team the time necessary to break in Banks slowly in 2013.

Buccaneers | Eric Wright considered starter for now    Sun May 26, 11:54 AM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers CB Eric Wright is currently considered one of the team's starting cornerback but could be moved to nickel back depending on CB Johnthan Banks' development during offseason workouts and training camp.

'He's been a reliable player,' head coach Greg Schiano said. 'He had some things that kind of tripped him up (last year), but he has been reliable - not only here but in other places where coaches on our staff have been with him.
