Bowman tore the ACL and MCL in his knee during the NFC Championship game - he isn't expected to be ready to play football before mid-October, and the team has stated repeatedly that he'll begin the regular season on the PUP list, which will cost him at least the first six games (assuming he is healthy enough to be activated after Week Six). His rehab is reportedly going well, but he was injured during the post-season which pushes his probable rehab into the 2014 regular season.

Summary

Bowman had been coming into his own with a breakout, Defensive Player of the Year-worthy 2013 campaign (filling up the box score with across the board personal highs - 120 solo tackles, 5 sacks, 2 INTs, 7 FFs and 1 TD), so it was unfortunate to have that momentum halted with his torn ACL in the NFC Championship game. He is expected to miss the first half of the season, returning after a mid-season bye, but that is informed conjecture at this point, contingent on how his rehab progresses, not having any serious setbacks and how cautious the medical team is with their young star. Even if Bowman does return in November, he may not hit the ground running and be the usual voracious tackle machine and playmaker the 49ers have grown accustomed to since he entered the starting lineup three years ago. This may point to 2015 being the season when he returns to form more fully. (May 26)
