49ers | Joe Williams gets the axe Fri Aug 31, 03:45 PM
San Francisco 49ers RB Joe Williams was waived Friday, Aug. 31.
Footballguys view: Williams was a feel good story when the 49ers traded up for him in the fourth round of last year's draft, but he failed to stay healthy last year or stand out in camp this year. He could get a look on a practice squad somewhere. |

49ers | Joe Williams competing for No. 3 RB duties Sun Aug 5, 02:33 PM
San Francisco 49ers RB Joe Williams has run with more urgency during training camp this summer and appears more willing to take the hits required from the position, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. Williams is competing with special-teams ace Raheem Mostert for the third running back job behind Jerick McKinnon and Matt Breida.
Footballguys view: Williams won't have fantasy value to begin the season, but he could establish himself if either of the top two backs miss time, and have a chance to provide an explosive element as an excellent fit in Kyle Shanahan's running game. Keep him on your waiver wire watch list. |

49ers | Joe Williams not a lock for 2018 roster Sun Apr 1, 12:37 PM
San Francisco 49ers RB Joe Williams likely faces an 'uphill battle' to make the roster this summer, according to NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco.
Footballguys view: Williams is a talented runner, and that's why the 49ers added him in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL draft. He missed all of his rookie season due to a foot injury, and he is no lock for the 53-man roster after the team added Jerrick McKinnon in free agency to be their lead back. Matt Breida should be penciled in as the primary backup to McKinnon at this time. |

49ers | Joe Williams finally healthy Fri Dec 29, 11:31 PM
San Francisco 49ers RB Joe Williams (ankle) is now healthy, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.
Footballguys view: Good news for Williams as his rookie season was lost due to this ankle injury. He's got straight-line speed and was a hyped rookie in the fourth round when the 49ers picked him up out of Utah. Carlos Hyde is hitting free agency in 2018, so Williams should compete with Matt Breida for touches next season. |

49ers | Joe Williams to IR Sat Sep 2, 02:25 PM
San Francisco 49ers RB Joe Williams (ankle) will be placed on season-ending Reserve/Injured with ankle injury, according to a source, Saturday, Sept. 2.
Footballguys view: Williams was a member of the "all hype" team entering training camp but he fizzled during August. The primary backup to Carlos Hyde is now UDFA Matt Breida. |

49ers | Joe Williams picking up the pace Fri Aug 4, 09:46 PM
San Francisco 49ers RB Joe Williams has been playing better of late, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. 'So I thought he's put two good practices in a row,' Shanahan said Friday. Aug. 4. 'It takes time with some of these guys.'
Footballguys view: This happens with rookie at skill positions, though running back is one of the 'easier' positions to enter the league as. Carlos Hyde remains the starter for now, but was lackluster last season, so if Williams can show a little more as we hit the season, he can steal that job. Of course, nobody expects much from this offense and Williams is no more than a flier at this point. |

49ers | Joe Williams getting off to a 'slow start' Wed Aug 2, 12:22 PM
San Francisco 49ers rookie RB Joe Williams has gotten off to a slow start in his first training camp, presumably because he is still getting familiarity with head coach Kyle Shanahan's offensive system. He also has to do a better job with ball security, according to CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco.

49ers | Joe Williams pushing for playing time Fri Jul 21, 10:44 PM
San Francisco 49ers RB Joe Williams has 'put himself into a position to compete for a significant role' heading into training camp, according to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com.
Footballguys view: There has been a steady trickle of takes that seem to put Carlos Hyde's supremacy in the backfield in question, even before the draft. San Francisco's running back position will be one of the most interesting to watch in training camps this year, with Williams as the hand-picked new regime back and Hyde as the incumbent and talented if frequently banged up returning back. |

49ers | Carlos Hyde must earning starting job Tue Jul 11, 03:32 PM
San Francisco 49ers RB Carlos Hyde will need to earn his starting job over rookie RB Joe Williams, according to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com. Maiocco envisions a committee approach with RB Tim Hightower also being involved.
Footballguys view: Fantasy owners seem split on Hyde's outlook for 2017. Some feel as the 49ers starter he's got low-end RB1 upside, while still others think he'll be unseated by Williams sooner rather than later. In the final year of his rookie contract, Hyde is a bit of an odd fit for Kyle Shanahan's zone-blocking system. The oft-injured veteran has a current ADP of RB18 (4.07) in 12-team PPR leagues. That could change drastically if we watch this battle unfold in favor of Williams (or a RBBC) in training camp and the preseason. |

49ers | Joe Williams has chance to start in 2017 Wed May 17, 01:46 PM
San Francisco 49ers fourth-round pick RB Joe Williams has a 'legitimate chance' to 'immediately unseat' RB Carlos Hyde as the team's top running back this season, according to CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco.
Footballguys view: The 49ers new regime doesn't seem to be enamored with Hyde at all. He's in the final year of his contract, but the 49ers may move him behind Williams on the depth chart. Williams is a runner who can create space for himself in a variety of ways. He's got burst to and through the hole, and he can make defenders miss in the open field. Williams is not a third-down back, but he can lead the way in a RBBC as the featured runner. |

49ers | Joe Williams confident, motivated Sat May 6, 12:05 AM
San Francisco 49ers RB Joe Williams said he feels like he was the best running back available in the 2017 NFL Draft.
Footballguys view: After 'retiring' from football for a month in 2016, Williams returned to the Utes lineup and dominated. Williams finished the year as a top-20 RB in the nation with 1,420 rushing yards with 10 touchdowns in nine contests. A plus athlete, Williams can create on his own in various ways. The Kyle Shanahan system is incredibly RB friendly, so Williams is a name all fantasy owners need to monitor. He'll compete with Carlos Hyde (who is in a contract year) for the top spot with the 49ers. |

NFL | Joe Williams has strong combine Sun Mar 5, 08:28 PM
Utah RB Joe Williams ran a 4.41 40-yard dash at the 2017 NFL Scouting Combine, the second-fastest time of any running back. He also ranked in the top 10 at his position in the broad jump, cone drill and vertical jump.
Footballguys view: Not a surprise given the athleticism he showed on film. He's got the burst to make defenders miss in small spaces, and Williams has good balance after contact. Fumbling is a problem, and he's also got some character concerns for teams to look into. He'll be a late-round pick in the 2017 NFL draft. |
