NFL | Julius Thomas retires    Fri Aug 24, 04:25 PM

Free-agent TE Julius Thomas (Dolphins) announced his retirement from professional football Friday, Aug. 24.

Footballguys view: A fourth-round pick of the Broncos back in 2011, Thomas was a fantasy superstar with Peyton Manning. He scored 24 touchdowns in two seasons with the Broncos (2013, 2014) but failed to match the same success in stops with the Dolphins and the Jaguars.

Chargers | Julius Thomas an option for Chargers?    Sat May 26, 12:23 PM

Free-agent TE Julius Thomas (Dolphins) could be an option for the Los Angeles Chargers because of TE Hunter Henry's (knee) injury, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Eric D. Williams.

Footballguys view: Thomas failed to impress with the Dolphins and he's certainly not the player he used to be with Denver years ago. The Chargers are desperate at the position after losing Henry for the year. We'll see if they reach out to someone like Thomas or choose to bring back Antonio Gates instead.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas released    Wed Mar 14, 04:36 PM

The Miami Dolphins released TE Julius Thomas on Wednesday, March 14. He was due to make $6.5 million in 2018, with $2 million guaranteed. If the contract contains offset language, the team will get dollar-for-dollar credit if/when he lands with another organization.

Footballguys view: Thomas just isn't the same player he used to be with the Broncos. He's never been much of a blocker but Thomas could find a home as a receiving threat.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas will be cut    Thu Feb 22, 04:17 PM

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas will be released this offseason, according to sources. The team will save $6.6 million in salary cap space with the move.

Footballguys view: More cap cutting for the Dolphins who had to be disappointed by Thomas' lack of production. Thomas is just about out of chances and has been unable to recapture the magic he briefly had in Denver.

Dolphins | Miami sends two to IR    Wed Dec 20, 12:12 PM

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas (foot) and OG Jermon Bushrod (foot) were placed on the Reserve/Injured list Wednesday, Dec. 20.

Footballguys view: A fourth-round pick in the 2011 NFL draft, Thomas has never played a full 16-game season in his pro career. He finishes his first season with the Dolphins with 41 catches, 388 receiving yards and three touchdowns. He's got a $6.6 million cap number in 2018 with $2 million in dead money remaining. We could see Thomas released by the Dolphins this upcoming offseason.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas not on injury report    Wed Oct 25, 06:10 PM

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas (knee) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Oct. 25, and is not on the injury report for Week 8.

Footballguys view: Thomas could be getting more work with QB Matt Moore under center. We'll see if he can continue to stay healthy and trend in the right direction for fantasy owners. Thomas is a TE2 with upside who may be on waiver wires out there.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas full go Tuesday    Tue Oct 24, 05:40 PM

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas (knee) practiced in full Tuesday, Oct. 24.

Footballguys view: Thomas had three catches for 58 yards in Week 7 against the Jets, both season highs for the veteran tight end. With QB Matt Moore starting for an injured Jay Cutler, we could see a few more targets for Thomas as a relief-valve receiver.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas listed as limited    Mon Oct 23, 04:15 PM

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas (knee) was limited during practice Monday, Oct. 23. The Dolphins did not hold a practice Monday, so this is an estimation.

Footballguys view: Thomas had a season-high 58 yards receiving in Week 7 against the Jets. We'll see if he can be more involved going forward with Matt Moore in at quarterback.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas posts 29 yards    Sun Oct 1, 12:56 PM

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas caught two passes for 29 yards against the New Orleans Saints in Week 4.

Dolphins | Miami hoping to get Julius Thomas involved    Sat Sep 30, 11:27 AM

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas has yet to add the spark over the middle of the field, but head coach Adam Gase puts the blame on his offense for failing to get defenses to get out of zone coverage.

Footballguys view: Thomas knows the Gase system well from their days together with the Broncos. He's not a fantasy factor like he was back then (no longer catching passes from Peyton Manning hurts), so fantasy owners can look for help at the position elsewhere. Keep him on your waiver wire speed dial just in case they start using him more and he starts producing at the expected level. This week against the Saints, Thomas is a streaming option in deeper leagues.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas improving chemistry    Thu Sep 14, 02:11 PM

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas has improved his chemistry with QB Jay Cutler over the last few weeks and has caught several touchdowns during practice.

Footballguys view: We are still a bit cautious about Thomas as we haven't seen the two of them in action. Adam Gase tends to use his tight ends a lot, and he and Thomas did really well when they were together in Denver. There have also been years when Jay Cutler has helped his tight ends produce a lot of points. We just aren't sure if this is all going to come together and when. Consider him a shaky TE2/TE3 this week, especially as the Rams have a legit defense and Aaron Donald is returning.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas had tight back    Mon Aug 14, 10:51 AM

Updating an earlier report, Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas (back) received the veteran's day off Monday, Aug. 14, after his back tightened up.

Footballguys view: Thomas is talented, and we've already seen him produce at a high level under Adam Gase when the two were with the Broncos......BUT, Thomas has yet to play a full 16-game season in his pro career. Now entering year seven in the NFL, we'd be startled if he gets a full season in 2017. Draft him as a TE2 with TE1 upside in certain matchups...especially is QB Jay Cutler shows a propensity to target him if/when Thomas flashes in the preseason.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas out of practice    Mon Aug 14, 09:39 AM

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas (back) is out of practice Monday, Aug. 14.

Footballguys view: He's getting a veteran day of rest. Thomas had his back tighten up, but with a day of rest he could get back out there soon. You're drafting him as a TE2 even though fantasy owners know TE1 upside is there...so long as Thomas is healthy.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas struggling    Sun Jun 18, 11:23 PM

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas has been a non-factor in practices and appears to have chemistry issues with QB Ryan Tannehill, according to Omar Kelly of the Sun-Sentinel.

Footballguys view: They've got time to work things out, so don't panic with this story. Keep a mental note of it, but watch to see if Thomas shows better chemistry during training camp. The offense is familiar to him as he played under head coach Adam Gase during their time together in Denver. Thomas is a TE2 with upside for fantasy owners.

Dolphins | OC optimistic about Julius Thomas    Wed Jun 7, 02:52 PM

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas has the chance to be a 10-touchdoown player if he can stay healthy, according to offensive coordinator Clyde Christensen.

Footballguys view: Thomas is back with Adam Gase, and he could be a valuable fantasy asset once again in this offense. He was a fantasy favorite working with Gase in Denver, and Thomas could improve upon the production he had in two years with Jacksonville. Thomas just needs to stay healthy as the fourth-round pick in 2011 has never played a full 16-game season as a pro. Projecting him for around 40 catches and 5-7 touchdowns is not out of the question.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas to be heavily involved?    Tue Jun 6, 02:57 PM

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas is going to be a big part of the Dolphins' offensive plans in 2017, according to QB Matt Moore.

Footballguys view: Thomas had some of his best years under Adam Gase in Denver, but we aren't sure that will translate here. In the early goings his ADP is 158 overall and 17 in tight ends, which means the general public feels hesitant about it as well. Right now we like his value, and his upside, but caution is the word.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas poised for big year    Wed May 31, 01:36 PM

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas is 'going to be a thing this year' if he stays healthy, according to the Miami Herald's Armando Salguero, who reports the team has drawn up multiple plays just for him.

Footballguys view: Staying healthy is the big 'if' with Thomas. Always has been and always will be. He's never played a full 16-game season during his pro career. Thomas is back in the Adam Gase offense, one he was incredibly productive in when he was with the Broncos. His current ADP is low, and he could outperform where he's going off the board at TE17 (13.11) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas working on chemistry with QB    Fri May 26, 06:34 PM

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas' chemistry with QB Ryan Tannehill appears to be a work in progress at this point during offseason workouts, in the opinion of The Miami Herald's Barry Jackson.

Footballguys view: Thomas is back in the Adam Gase offense where he was a star (and fantasy beast) with the Broncos. His role is clear, and Thomas should provide a big upgrade for the Dolphins at the position as he's a red-zone weapon when healthy. Thomas has never played a full 16-game schedule as a pro, so fantasy owners need to proceed with caution when considering him. The risk is cooked into his current ADP (TE19, 13.11) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas poised for huge year?    Sat May 6, 01:24 PM

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas can add '10, 12 touchdowns' to the Dolphins' offense in 2017, according to offensive coordinator Clyde Christensen.

Footballguys view: Reunited with Adam Gase, we could see Thomas scoring TDs in bunches like he did for the Denver Broncos. The key with Thomas (as it always is) has to do with health. He still hasn't played a full season since being selected in the fourth round of the 2011 NFL draft.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas feeling good    Sat Apr 22, 01:55 PM

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas told the Florida Times-Union recently this spring 'is probably the best I've ever felt' and that head coach Adam Gase's offense 'feels a lot like home'.

Footballguys view: Thomas is a weapon, and he can certainly be a TD hog for the Dolphins in 2017. He's never played a full 16-game season in the pros, so we'll be shocked if this is his first. Thomas is a TE1 for fantasy owners, but he comes with injury risk.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas expected to make difference    Mon Apr 3, 10:54 PM

Miami Dolphins head coach Adam Gase said TE Julius Thomas is 'going to make a little bit of a difference for us.' Gase also said he has a 'good idea' of what the club wants to do on offense with him.

Footballguys view: Thomas was sluggish last year and failed to make a consistent impact on offense for the Jaguars. He'll have a chance to be the primary receiving tight end in Miami, but the offense is run-first with three good wide receivers, so he is unlikely to be more than a bye/injury fill-in for 2017 fantasy leagues.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas finally healthy    Tue Mar 14, 12:47 PM

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas is finally healthy after battling back, finger and ankle injuries. 'I don't really have any handicaps, anything that will hold me back,' Thomas said. '... I feel really good. I know that I'll be able to play at the highest level I've played in my career.'

Footballguys view: A healthy Thomas can be an effective Thomas...especially now that he's reunited with Adam Gase. Thomas put up the best numbers of his career working under Gase in the Broncos offense. The veteran tight end should be a big red-zone target for the Dolphins in 2017.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas expendable due to blocking woes    Sun Feb 26, 02:45 PM

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas wore out his welcome with the Jacksonville Jaguars in part due to his limitations as a blocker, according to a source, which called Thomas' blocking 'non-existent'.

Footballguys view: That sounds about right. Thomas hasn't developed as a blocker, and at this point of his pro career he never will. The Dolphins didn't trade for him to blast open holes as a blocker. Instead, the Dolphins want Thomas because of his receiving ability and threat to score in the red zone.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas passes physical    Wed Feb 22, 09:00 AM

Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas passed his physical with the club Tuesday, Feb. 21.

Footballguys view: That makes the trade go through, and the Dolphins get an upgrade on offense. Reunited with Adam Gase, Thomas should be able to be counted on as a TE2 with TE1 upside for fantasy owners. The best numbers of his career came under Gase during their time with the Denver Broncos.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas wanted to reunite with old OC    Mon Feb 20, 11:09 PM

Updating a previous report, Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas restructured his contract in order to land with the Dolphins because he wanted to reunite with head coach Adam Gase, who was his old offensive coordinator with the Denver Broncos.

Footballguys view: Thomas did his best work with Gase running the offense in Denver. Now that they're in Miami together, we could see some of that old spark. However, Thomas has never played a full 16-game season as a pro and fantasy owners need to be ready if (when?) he gets hurt again. Thomas is a TE2 with TE1 upside in Miami.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas reworks deal    Mon Feb 20, 06:46 PM

Miami Dolphins impending TE Julius Thomas agreed to restructure his contract as part of his trade from the Jacksonville Jaguars to the Dolphins, according to a source. Thomas was scheduled to count $8.3 million against the salary cap in 2017, $9.8 million in 2018 and $10.3 million in 2019 before the restructuring.

Footballguys view: That was part of the deal as Thomas' price tag was just too high. The Dolphins get another weapon for the passing game, and Thomas is a player who could stand out in the red zone. Reunited with Adam Gase, we'll consider Thomas a TE2 with TE1 upside in 2017.

Jaguars | Julius Thomas being sent to Miami    Mon Feb 20, 05:24 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas is being traded to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a late-round 2017 draft pick Monday, Feb. 20.

Footballguys view: So Thomas is on the move to Miami, but it's not for LT Branden Albert. The Jaguars didn't get much out of Thomas, and he still has yet to play a full 16-game season in the pros. With such a rich draft class coming into the league this year, expect the Jags to spend a pick on the position.

Dolphins | Miami acquiring Julius Thomas     Mon Feb 20, 05:16 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas is being acquired by the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a late-round 2017 draft pick Monday, Feb. 20.

Footballguys view: The Dolphins don't send LT Branden Albert to the Jaguars, but they do get Thomas for a late pick. Thomas is reunited with Adam Gase, and he should step in as their lead tight end. He's a receiving weapon when healthy, and Thomas put up the best numbers of his career working under Gase when they were both with the Denver Broncos. Now, Ryan Tannehill is no Peyton Manning, but Thomas should be able to be used to the best of his ability with Gase calling the shots.

Miami Dolphins OT Branden Albert could be traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for TE Julius Thomas, according to league sources, and Albert said he wouldn't 'ruffle feathers' if he was traded.

Footballguys view: If added by the Dolphins, Thomas would be reunited with head coach Adam Gase. He put up the best numbers of his career under Gase during their time with the Broncos. If Thomas can stay healthy, something he's struggled with as a pro, he can be a dangerous weapon for any passing attack.

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas could be included in a trade that would send Miami Dolphins OT Branden Albert to the Jaguars, in the opinion of The Miami Herald's Armando Salguero.

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas' contract calls for $3 million of his $7 million base salary for 2017 to become fully guaranteed at the end of the day Friday, Feb. 10, according to multiple sources.

Footballguys view: The Jaguars could move on from Thomas as he's done nothing of note in two years with the team. If they do want to get rid of him, then releasing him at some point on Friday would make the most sense. However, the Jaguars do have $63 million in cap space so they might keep Thomas in the fold.

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas has missed 11 of 32 games since signing with the Jaguars because of various injuries but has caught nine touchdowns during those games. His $7 million salary for 2017 will be guaranteed if he is on the roster March 13.

Footballguys view: Thomas hasn't done nearly enough when healthy to merit his salary in 2017, but he always shown great chemistry with Blake Bortles in camp, so the team might want to give him one more chance. With Marqise Lee's emergence as a #2A receiver, the passing game could lose him and not take much of a hit.

Jaguars | Jaguars expected to cut Julius Thomas    Tue Jan 17, 10:40 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas is expected to be released by the team this offseason, according to ESPN's Mike DiRocco. He has the fourth-highest cap figure ($8.3 million) in 2017.

Footballguys view: This wouldn't be a total surprise if it happens. Thomas has failed to play a full 16-game season in his pro career, and he's missed 11 games for the Jaguars since signing a five-year, $46 million deal with the team in 2015. When healthy, Thomas has a nose for the end zone and can create mismatches with his basketball skill set. Just don't ask him to block, and don't expect him to stay healthy. He'd get some interest, perhaps limited, if on the open market.
