NFL | BenJarvus Green-Ellis cleared    Thu Aug 13, 05:33 PM

Free-agent RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis (oblique) has been cleared by Dr. Bryan Kelly, the doctor who performed surgery on Green-Ellis last October to reattach his oblique muscle to the bone. Green-Ellis' agent has been in touch with teams, and Green-Ellis is optimistic a team will give him another chance this year. He thinks he's faster now than he was when he last played in 2013.

Footballguys view: Now that Green-Ellis has been cleared, we could see a few teams have interest in the veteran back. There were earlier rumblings that Houston could be interested in Green-Ellis after Arian Foster went down.

NFL | BenJarvus Green-Ellis drawing interest    Thu Aug 13, 10:11 AM

Free-agent RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis' (Bengals) agent has been in touch with teams, but they were waiting for the right situation to arise. 'Oh, I'm ready,' Green-Ellis said. 'I've been training. I call them my 'Green-Ellis two-a-days.' I'm boxing, running hills, doing all kinds of football drills. For five weeks now, twice a day, working out like crazy. The Green-Ellis two-a-days.'

Texans | HOU discusses BenJarvus Green-Ellis    Wed Aug 5, 12:50 AM

The Houston Texans have discussed free-agent RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis (Bengals) internally, as the staff is familiar with him from head coach Bill O'Brien's time with the New England Patriots. Green-Ellis is healthy and ready.

Footballguys view: Green-Ellis certainly isn't a dynamic back (never has been), but he's strong, determined and efficient as a runner. We'll see if he gets the call from Houston.

NFL | BenJarvus Green-Ellis drawing interest    Wed Sep 17, 08:00 PM

Several clubs have reportedly reached out to free-agent RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis (Bengals), who is still in the process of rehab after suffering a hip injury in the preseason.

Footballguys view: It's after Week 1 of the regular season, so teams won't have to guarantee Green-Ellis' salary for the rest of the year. With all the RB injuries around the league, we could see someone take a shot on the veteran back.

Bengals | BenJarvus Green-Ellis cut    Fri Aug 29, 02:30 PM

The Cincinnati Bengals cut RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis Friday, Aug. 29.

Footballguys view: Here's a veteran back who could get some interest on the open market. The veteran was never going to make the Bengals final roster. His price tag was too high, and the team selected Jeremy Hill this year in the NFL draft. We'll see if some team shows interest in the veteran now that he's available.

Bengals | Jeremy Hill could see solid work    Thu Aug 7, 08:11 AM

Cincinnati Bengals RB Jeremy Hill will see 10 to 15 carries a game in the opinion of The Cincinnati Enquirer's Paul Dehner Jr. Dehner doesn't believe RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis has a chance to beat out Hill for the short-yardage role.

Footballguys view: We've long thought "Law Firm" would find itself facing an injunction, so this wouldn't shock us in the least. Right now Hill is rated as a RB4 while Green-Ellis barely rates. Unless he's traded that will stay the case but Hill's ADP looks like it's about to rise.

Bengals | BenJarvus Green-Ellis No. 2 on depth chart    Sat Aug 2, 11:28 AM

Cincinnati Bengals RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis is listed as the No. 2 running back on the team's first depth chart. He is listed behind RB Giovani Bernard but in front of RB Jeremy Hill.

Footballguys view: Some have speculated the Bengals would be letting go of "The Lawfirm" this year. At this time, that doesn't seem to be the case. We imagine that Hill will surpass Green-Ellis at some point during training camp and the preseason. Green-Ellis has a $3 million cap number this year, but he gives the team quality veteran leadership (and depth) at the position.

Bengals | Two RBs may compete for one spot    Wed Jul 9, 02:10 PM

Cincinnati Bengals RBs BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Rex Burkhead could compete for one roster spot if the team keeps four running backs on the final roster. RBs Giovani Bernard, Jeremy Hill and Cedric Peerman appear to be locks for the roster.

Footballguys view: Peerman's special teams prowess will keep him on the roster, while the overpriced Green-Ellis will have to have a great preseason and camp to stave off Burkhead, who is bigger and more physically talented. Look for Green-Ellis to land on a team with injury/depth issues at running back after final cuts or a few weeks into the season.

Bengals | Jeremy Hill working with second team    Wed May 28, 08:50 AM

Cincinnati Bengals RB Jeremy Hill opened organized team activities with the second-team offense, ahead of RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis.

Footballguys view: Interesting note here for fantasy owners. Some think Green-Ellis is going to be shown the door soon because of the arrival of Hill. The veteran has a $3 million cap number this year, and that's simply too high for a third-string back. We'll see if the team tries to renegotiate his contract in order to keep Green-Ellis around as a mentor for Hill.

Bengals | BenJarvus Green-Ellis possibly on his way out?    Tue May 27, 02:22 PM

Cincinnati Bengals RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis may have an uphill battle to make the team this year, according to Bengals.com editor Geoff Hobson. The Bengals will probably only keep four running backs, including Cedric Peerman, who has proven to be very valuable on special teams. After drafting Jeremy Hill, a roster battle may take place between Green-Ellis and Rex Burkhead, who offensive coordinator Hue Jackson likes a lot. Green-Ellis turns 29 in July.

Footballguys view: As we mentioned previously, with Jeremy Hill joining Gio Bernard the roster space is at a premium. Green-Ellis is solid, but nothing special and should be avoided in all formats right now. The Bengals could possibly keep Green-Ellis around as a mentor for Hill, but that would come with a $3 million cap hit.

Bengals | Picking up the pace offensively    Thu May 22, 05:38 PM

Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Hue Jackson wants to implement an up-tempo offense and intends to be heavily committed to the running game to set up the pass. Bengals OT Andrew Whitworth said the team is planning to get as many snaps in as they can.

Footballguys view: This is a big year for quarterback Andy Dalton and a fast paced offense which requires quick reads and a lot of run support should suit him. It may cap AJ Green's top end a little, but Green will get his. We still don't trust Dalton as more than a backup, but it will be interesting to see how the offense develops as we hit camp.

Bengals | Cutting BenJarvus Green-Ellis not necessarily done deal    Sat May 17, 10:20 PM

Many assume that the Cincinnati Bengals drafting of RB Jeremy Hill spelled the end for RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis, but offensive coordinator Hue Jackson was adamant last week that Hill's selection had no bearing on Green-Ellis' status.

Footballguys view: The Bengals can create $2.5 million in cap savings by releasing Green-Ellis. If they release him before June 1st, the team would avoid paying him $500,000 in bonus money that is due. With Hill added in the draft, they could easily move on from the veteran back.

Bengals | BenJarvus Green-Ellis could be on bubble    Sun May 11, 09:23 PM

Cincinnati Bengals RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis' roster spot could be in jeopardy after the team selected RB Jeremy Hill during the draft. The team would save $2.5 million in salary cap space if they release Green-Ellis.

Footballguys view: 2013 draft pick Rex Burkhead is also still on the roster. Green-Ellis is competent, if unexciting, and would probably find himself on another roster pretty quickly.

Bengals | Giovani Bernard expects complicated playbook    Thu Feb 6, 12:12 PM

Cincinnati Bengals RB Giovani Bernard said he expects a wild playbook from new offensive coordinator Hue Jackson in 2014. 'For me and Benny, I think we've done a good job thus far. I think we can continue to keep doing a good job,' Bernard said. 'We just got to go into it with an open mind, and he's (Jackson) going to create this craziest playbook ever, but it's going to be fun. I'm excited for it.' Jackson is expected to move the Bengals to a more ground-and-pound offensive approach including Bernard and RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis.

Footballguys view: More run plays means more opportunity for both running backs, though we still feel Bernard will eventually emerge as the long term answer. You have to wonder, if they are going more ground-and-pound, is the team souring on quarterback Andy Dalton after multiple poor playoff performances?

Bengals | Two running backs on verge of milestones    Sun Dec 15, 04:45 AM

Cincinnati Bengals RBs Benjarvus Green-Ellis and Giovani Bernard are the first Bengals duo to run for over 600 yards each since 1988, when Ickey Woods and James Brooks helped power Cincinnati to its second Super Bowl. Only once since 1992 have the Bengals had two backs with 160 carries or more in a season, but Green-Ellis and Bernard are on pace to join Kenny Watson and Rudi Johnson as the second duo to accomplish it. In 2007, Watson had 178 carries to Johnson's 170.

Cincinnati Bengals RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis (thumb) admitted he has played with a broken thumb since Week 2.

Bengals | To limit Giovani Bernard's load    Fri Nov 8, 01:57 PM

Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden wants to limit RB Giovani Bernard's workload in the second half of the season in order to keep him fresh and healthy. In the last four games, RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis has 60 touches to 52 for Bernard. 'To say we're going to give the ball to Gio 25 times each week is kind of unrealistic,' Gruden said. 'He needs spelling. He needs a bigger back in there like BenJarvus to take 10, 12, 15 carries a game.'

Footballguys view: Bernard has been efficient in his role as a change of pace back, and now he has a rib injury. He'll remain a boom/bust RB2 and ideal flex going forward, with brighter days ahead in dynasty leagues.

Bengals | BenJarvus Green-Ellis not on injury report    Thu Oct 17, 04:49 PM

Cincinnati Bengals RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis (illness) was removed from the injury report Thursday, Oct. 17.

Footballguys view: Good news for those looking for a flex play. "Law Firm" is doing more pro bono work than the high end stuff he has in the past and Gio Bernard is still eating into his carries and snaps since Bernard is a pass catching machine. Still, if you're in bind, Green-Ellis should serve as your fill-in.

Bengals | RBs split carries    Mon Sep 23, 11:01 AM

Cincinnati Bengals RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis had 10 rushes for 29 yards and a touchdown in Week 3, while RB Giovani Bernard had 10 carries for 50 yards and a score. Bernard also pitched in four catches for 49 yards.

Footballguys view: This split is likely to continue for the Bengals. We all want to see more touches for Bernard, but that's unlikely to happen. Green-Ellis will continue to cut into the workload in what is a 50/50 RBBC.

Bengals | Giovani Bernard's role growing    Fri Sep 20, 09:49 AM

Cincinnati Bengals RB Giovani Bernard's role is expected to grow in the offense. Offensive coordinator Jay Gruden said Bernard and BenJarvus Green-Ellis should be closer to a 50-50 split in the coming weeks. Gruden feels more comfortable opening the playbook more now that he knows Bernard can handle pass protection.

Footballguys view: Bernard is still probably just an upside flex play, because Green-Ellis will get goal line carries and carries to drain the clock when the Bengals are ahead. Bernard's value is up, but his production will still fluctuate week-to-week.

Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden hinted before training camp that there might be an equal distribution of carries between RBs BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Giovani Bernard, but that is unlikely to happen. The team has been impressive by Bernard, but they're not ready to reduce Green-Ellis' role.

Footballguys view: We'll see the team use both backs this season but the lead back could be Bernard. He's simply more explosive and a better big play option than Green-Ellis.

Bengals | Two RBs to split carries?    Thu Jul 25, 02:23 PM

Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden indicated RBs BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Giovani Bernard could evenly split carries this season. The team likes Bernard's ability to catch passes out of the backfield.

Footballguys view: Green-Ellis should no longer be treated as the clear starter and lead back. Bernard obviously has more value in PPR leagues, but if he impresses, he could take more than half of the workload in the backfield. Bernard has as much upside as any running back that you can regularly get outside of the top 25 backs off of the board (for now).

Bengals | To use Giovani Bernard at receiver    Tue Jul 2, 12:40 PM

Cincinnati Bengals running backs coach Hue Jackson preferred RB Giovani Bernard over RBs Le'Veon Bell, Montee Ball and Eddie Lacy in this year's draft because of Bernard's speed and versatility. Bernard was used as a wide receiver in spring practices, in addition to his rushing duties. 'He's so natural catching the ball. He can catch it like a receiver,' Jackson said. 'I knew he could catch it really well, but I wouldn't be surprised if he could go out there and line up outside and catch balls like some other guys can because he has that skill set.'

Footballguys view: Bernard was one of the best pass-catching backs in the draft, so this should come as no surprise. PPR leaguers should not let him drop past the sixth round.

Bengals | Giovani Bernard to play key role    Wed May 15, 07:04 PM

Cincinnati Bengals RB Giovani Bernard is expected to play a key role in the team's offense this year, and he said he's excited to share the backfield with RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis. 'I think it's more so a complementary kind of thing,' Bernard said. 'I think we are both going to help each other out. I definitely had a chance to talk to him, and he's the leader of that pack, he's the leader of the guys. I'm going to be following his footsteps, so I'm going to do whatever I can to help him. He's going to help me.'

Footballguys view: Bernard is the big play change of RB the Bengals have been looking for. He'll start as a change of pace back behind Green-Ellis but could get a bigger role if he impresses early.

Bengals | Running back chatter    Mon May 6, 08:11 AM

Cincinnati Bengals RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis is expected to see the most carries this season. It would also be a surprise if both RBs Bernard Scott and Giovani Bernard made the team.

Footballguys view: If it comes down to one player then the veteran Scott may be the odd man out. Injuries and inconsistencies have held him back during his pro career, preventing him from playing up to his potential. The rookie Bernard is an explosive runner, younger, and could be the better option.

Bengals | BenJarvus Green-Ellis unsure about new crown rule    Wed Apr 17, 01:07 PM

Cincinnati Bengals RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis said he is in favor of the new rule involving the crown of players' helmets but is not sure how it will be officiated. 'I'm all for the safety part of it. I just don't know how they're going to call it,' Green-Ellis said. 'They're putting a lot on the referees. That's to be played out. That's what the preseason is for and that type of stuff.' He said he does not think the rule will impact him much because he does not lead with his helmet while running.

Footballguys view: Like any new rule we anticipate there will be some growing pains. RBs will have to adjust as well as officiating crews.

Bengals | Think BenJarvus Green-Ellis would be fine with sharing    Sun Feb 24, 05:49 PM

Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden said he believes RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis would be fine with sharing carries with a change-of-pace back. 'BenJarvus would probably welcome it,' Gruden said. 'It takes some carries off of him. Some guys want the ball every single play, but some guys like to get that rest and come out and have that change of pace guy. It would be nice. RB Cedric Peerman proved he could possibly be that guy. He had some big runs against Oakland and other teams. Maybe he'll step up in that role next year.'

Bengals | Looking for complement at RB    Wed Jan 9, 12:00 AM

Cincinnati Bengals RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis had a good, but not great, season, but offensive coordinator Jay Gruden feels his team lacked a speedy 'gamebreaker' at running back. The team would like to find a speed back to complement Green-Ellis, and Gruden points to the draft. 'We do probably need some kind of pace-changer, game-changer, speed, some breakaway-type thing,' Gruden said.

'We're going to prepare to run the ball like we do every week and hopefully BenJarvus is healthy,' Gruden said. 'He's got a little twinge right now, but it looks like he's going to be fine. It will be important to us ... We have other backs also that can run the ball. We're not going to change our plan at all. It never varies. Updating a previous report, the Cincinnati Bengals are concerned about the status of RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis (hamstring) heading into the playoffs. He injured his hamstring in pre-game warm-ups and did not play in Week 17 against the Baltimore Ravens.

Footballguys view: Guess this injury wasn't an excuse for Green-Ellis to rest. The Bengals would then be down to their fourth-string running back. They would be smart to abandon the run and just go the spread against the Texans vulnerable pass defense.
