Dolphins | Rookie RB Thomas to be starter?    Tue May 3, 11:21 AM

Ben Volin, from the Palm Beach Post, reports rookie RB Daniel Thomas could be the Dolphins feature back with Ronnie Brown, Ricky Williams, and Patrick Cobbs set to become unrestricted free agents. "I feel like I play fast," Thomas said. "I'm a guy that can keep the chains moving, the guy that can also go out of the backfield and catch routes. I can run between the tackles, go outside, whatever they may need me to do."

Footballguys view: Thomas is a big back who reminds many in the scouting community of Raiders RB Michael Bush. The converted quarterback is swift and tough to bring down when he builds a head of steam. He is also a good receiver out of the backfield. We think Thomas could produce as a high end RB3 for your fantasy team.

Dolphins | Trying out Clifton Smith    Tue Sep 7, 09:00 PM

The Miami Dolphins will work out RB Clifton Smith (Buccaneers) Wednesday, Sept. 8, as they search for a kick returner, reports the Palm Beach Post's Ben Volin, per a source. Miami is not content with either RB Patrick Cobbs or CB Nolan Carroll as their primary kick returner. Smith led the NFL last year with a 29.1 average kick return among players with 20-plus returns, but he was placed on Injured Reserve in December after suffering his second concussion of the season.

Dolphins | Nolan Carroll front runner to be kickoff returner    Thu Sep 2, 07:35 PM

Miami Dolphins CB Nolan Carroll is the front runner to be the team's kickoff returner this season, reports Omar Kelly, of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. RB Patrick Cobbs is also in the running for the position, but he hasn't handled a return during the preseason and the team prefers to use him as a lead blocker for the primary returner.

Dolphins | Patrick Cobbs making progress    Thu Jul 8, 02:05 PM

Miami Dolphins RB Patrick Cobbs (knee) said he is making progress in his rehab from knee surgery but is not sure when he will be fully recovered from the injury, reports MiamiDolphins.com's Andy Kent. 'I've got a little further to go. Right when I think I feel good, I'm not back to my old self and there's just no other way to look at it,' Cobbs said. 'But I'm getting better every day and I feel like if we had a game tomorrow I'd be able to give it my all and go just as much as anybody else. The progress is going along well. I don't have a timeline to when I'm going to be 100 percent but it's definitely going well.'

Footballguys view: Cobbs is the third-string RB behind Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams, but is trusted by the coaching staff and has flashed big play ability when healthy. He would be the first player to get an increase in playing time if Brown or Williams get hurt - which is a distinct possibility.

Dolphins | Coach says Patrick Cobbs is invaluable    Wed Aug 12, 08:27 PM

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel posted an interview transcript with Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano. During the interview he was asked about his short and long-term vision for RB Patrick Cobbs. "No, I have to be honest with you; it is going to be really hard for me to give that guy up. I mean, I really like Pat Cobbs as a player. I like what he brings to the table for our football team. So I wouldn't want to say short term. I think people coming in here, having to compete with Pat Cobbs, they have an all day sucker when they do that. This guy is going to show up and give you his best shot every single day. He is one of the few players on this team - I don't want to gloat about him but - that what you see every day in the practice field is what he does in the game. He plays at that pace every day. When you look at his vision, he has run skills, he catches the ball out of the backfield, he blocks on third down, he is a special teams player - the best one we had last year - he has return ability. So there are a lot of jobs for a guy like Pat Cobbs and I think that is what makes him valuable. I like those guys that can do a lot of jobs."

Footballguys view: Fantasy players (especially Ronnie Brown owners) need to remember the name Patrick Cobbs. Ricky Williams is no longer the player that he used to be and with Cobbs' all-around skill set we could see him get touches as a runner and a receiver. With three-headed RBBCs becoming the norm, we could see Cobbs have a role on the offense even without injuries in front of him on the depth chart.

Dolphins | Sparano wants to give Cobbs more carries    Sun Jul 5, 03:09 PM

Barry Jackson, from the Miami Herald, reports that coach Tony Sparano said he would love to give Patrick Cobbs more carries.

Footballguys view: Cobbs only had 12 carries for 88 yards last season, but he's shown the ability to break big plays catching passes. The Dolphins effectively used him as a receiver out of the backfield last season and he finished the year with 19 receptions for 275 yards and 2 touchdowns on 27 targets. With Ricky Williams in the twilight of his career it makes sense for Miami to start looking elsewhere for production. Cobbs will never be a between the tackles runner, but if used on draw plays and sweeps - in addition to screen passes - he could put up some nice numbers.
