New York Giants impending free-agent WR Michael Clayton said he expects to re-sign with the Giants once the lockout is over.

Footballguys view: Making the team will be almost impossible for Clayton if the Giants re-sign Steve Smith. Hakeem Nicks, Mario Manningham, and rookie Jerrel Jernigan are locks to make the final roster, and youngsters Ramses Barden and Victor Cruz showed promise before getting hurt last year.

Free-agent WR Michael Clayton (Buccaneers) worked out for the Cincinnati Bengals Wednesday, Oct. 13, according to Joe Reedy, of The Cincinnati Enquirer.

Footballguys view: It was all downhill for Clayton after his rookie season in 2004 when he burst onto the NFL scene as a productive first-round pick. Since then he's been plagued by injuries and inconsistencies to his game. Never say never, but it's difficult to imagine Clayton getting his career back on track.

Buccaneers | Michael Clayton on the bubble    Sun Aug 29, 12:21 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Michael Clayton is clearly on the bubble to make the team's final roster, reports Stephen Holder, of The St. Petersburg Times. Clayton did not play in the team's third preseason game. Clayton said he has full confidence he will remain with the team. His $3 million base salary is fully guaranteed, but the team would be willing to entertain trade offers for him. They could always opt to release him and eat the guaranteed money.

Buccaneers | Josh Freeman building chemistry with WR    Fri Aug 20, 01:18 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Josh Freeman believes he has been building chemistry with WRs Michael Clayton, Maurice Stovall and Sammie Stroughter since he began his career with the team but said he is getting a good feel for Stroughter when lining up as the slot receiver, reports Scott Reynolds, of PewterReport.com. 'Sammie is working the slot a lot and he's running a bunch of option routes. I've really started to get a really good feel for Sammie in the slot,' Freeman said.

Buccaneers | Michael Clayton on the bubble    Mon Aug 16, 11:34 AM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Michael Clayton is clearly on the bubble, according to Pat Yasinskas, of ESPN.com. Clayton has worked hard in camp and hasn't looked bad. However, he hasn't done anything special, and it would take several injuries for him to end up in a starting role. The question remains whether the team would want to keep Clayton as a No. 4, No. 5 or No. 6 wide receiver.

Footballguys view: Clayton hasn't looked the same since his breakout rookie season in 2004. The Bucs made a youth movement at the wide receiver position this offseason and may decide to let the veteran receiver go.

Buccaneers | Maurice Stovall stepping up    Sat Aug 7, 05:49 AM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Maurice Stovall has emerged as the top option at the Z receiver position, reports Roy Cummings, of The Tampa Tribune. He has had a strong training camp so far and has the edge to be one of the team's starting receivers when the season begins. While he is the player to beat, WRs Michael Clayton and rookie Arrelious Benn are playing well enough to steal a starting job.

Footballguys view: If Stovall keeps this up, look for Michael Clayton's sometimes brilliant, but mostly painful tenure with the Bucs to come to an end. We still can't figure out why they extended his contract last year.

Buccaneers | Battle at wide receiver kicking off    Thu Jul 29, 03:50 AM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WRs Reggie Brown, Michael Clayton, Arrelious Benn and Mike Williams will battle during training camp for starting roles at wide receiver, reports Ira Kaufman, of The Tampa Tribune. The Buccaneers' coaches are excited about the big-play potential Williams brings to the table and he may be able to provide QB Josh Freeman with the deep threat he is looking for.

Footballguys view: Brown and Clayton are the veteran underachievers trying to show they deserve playing time over the two rookies. Arrelious Benn is dangerous on underneath routes, and Williams can use his deep speed to attack a defense downfield. Second-year wideout Sammie Stroughter should be the Bucs slot receiver, regardless of who is named the starters in Tampa.

Buccaneers | Money may be only reason Michael Clayton still has a job    Sun May 9, 01:28 PM

Roy Cummings, of The Tampa Tribune, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Michael Clayton is likely still on roster because the Buccaneers gave him a five-year, $24 million contract last year.

Footballguys view: Tampa is likely regretting the decision to give him a contract extension now. They still owe the veteran receiver a lot of money, with $10.5 million in guaranteed money. The Bucs could cut Clayton next year because his contract becomes a little easier to swallow. Clayton has never matched the production he had in his rookie year back in 2004, but if he starts playing better it could save his job with the team. He's likely to lose playing time this year to the Bucs rookie receivers Arrelious Benn and Mike Williams.

Buccaneers | Trying to trade Michael Clayton    Mon Apr 26, 10:29 AM

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been attempting to trade WR Michael Clayton; however, no teams have expressed interest thus far, reports Rick Stroud, of the St. Petersburg Times. Clayton became expendable after the Buccaneers selected receivers Arrelious Benn and Mike Williams in the NFL Draft. The Bucs believe both players will be starters.

Footballguys view: Michael Clayton has failed to produce like he did in his rookie season (2004) when he was the 13th best fantasy receiver in the league. He's a career underachiever that makes Cowboys WR Roy Williams look like the best that ever played the game. We don't anticipate the Bucs phone ringing off the hook with trade offers for the veteran possession receiver.

Buccaneers | Clayton not guaranteed roster spot    Sat Mar 27, 04:59 PM

Rick Stroud, of the St. Petersburg Times, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Raheem Morris said WR Michael Clayton is not guaranteed a roster spot but is confident that Clayton will be more prepared next season than he was this season.

Footballguys view: Clayton has disappointed ever since his breakout rookie performance in 2004. He scored 7 touchdowns his rookie season, but has only 3 in the years since then.

Buccaneers | Clayton's future remains up in the air    Sat Mar 13, 09:47 AM

Rick Stroud, of the St. Petersburg Times, reports the Tampa Bay Buccaneers do not plan on making any decision on the future of WR Michael Clayton until after training camp. According to ProFootballWeekly.com, Clayton is due a $1 million deferred bonus March 15 and according to sources, the Buccaneers are close to releasing him. However, the deferred bonus is part of the $10 million in guarantees the team owes Clayton as part of the five-year, $24-million contract he signed in 2009. As a result, there is no roster bonus or new money that would quicken a decision by the team on Clayton.

Footballguys view: Ever since his breakout performance as a rookie Clayton has failed to live up to his potential. He's a career underachiever that needs a fresh start if he's ever going to improve his play.

Charlie Campbell, of PewterReport.com, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Michael Clayton could be a candidate to be released this offseason.
