Broncos | Correll Buckhalter will be cut loose Tue Jul 26, 01:17 AM
The Denver Broncos have notified RB Correll Buckhalter of their intentions to release him, a league source said Monday, July 25.
Footballguys view: It may take some time for Buckhalter to find another team to play for. He's not the same player he used to be, but could provide a team with quality veteran depth. The Broncos are looking for a youth movement at the position and Buckhalter just wasn't in their plans. |

Broncos | Correll Buckhalter not likely to return Mon Feb 21, 05:59 PM
The Denver Broncos likely will decide to release RB Correll Buckhalter this offseason because he is scheduled to make $2.4 million in 2011 and the team will look to get younger, reports CBSSports.com.
Footballguys view: Not a surprise here. John Fox loves to run the football and we expect the Broncos to move to more of a power running game. Buckhalter isn't the same player as he used to be, and Denver could add another RB via the draft or free agency. |

Broncos | Laurence Maroney brings experienced depth Thu Sep 16, 01:31 PM
Denver Broncos RB Laurence Maroney was added as depth to the running back position behind RBs Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckhalter, reports The Associated Press. Maroney, when healthy, should be able to step right in because he knows the team's offensive system, which is very similar to that of the New England Patriots. Head coach Josh McDaniels said the team is at the point where another injury or two to their top backs would leave them incredibly thin with experienced depth at the position. 'It's not that we don't have players, we just don't have a lot of players behind them that have played football in the NFL,' McDaniels said. McDaniels also was not happy with the running game production during Week 1, as he feels the team left a lot of yards on the field.
Footballguys view: Laurence Maroney has the talent to be a full time back for the Broncos if injuries strike the depth chart in front of him. He knows the system and will have a very short learning curve. |

Broncos | Buckhalter may return to practice this week Mon Aug 23, 09:53 AM
Cecil Lammey, NFL Insider for FRSN and senior writer for Footballguys.com, reports via Twitter that according to sources Broncos RB Correll Buckhalter (back/neck) may return to practice this week.
Footballguys view: This would be great news for the Broncos if they get Buckhalter back earlier than expected. The team has not been able to run the football effectively with guys like Lance Ball, Bruce Hall, and Justin Fargas getting a majority of the carries in the preseason. The team is hopeful that both Buckhalter and Knowshon Moreno will be good to go for the start of the regular season. |

Footballguys view: In case you're wondering, the next RB on the depth chart is probably Kolby Smith, but the Broncos also have intriguing deep sleeper rookie Toney Baker, a big back who went undrafted after missing almost two years with a knee injury in 2007 and 2008. The team has shown interest in Brian Westbrook, so he could also get a call today. |

Broncos | Moreno hopes to avoid rookie mistakes Sat Jun 5, 07:48 PM
CBSSports.com reports Broncos RB Knowshon Moreno isn't a rookie anymore, so he's hoping the mistakes he made as a rookie last season are in the past. Moreno said he saw plenty of mistakes -- mostly mental errors -- when studying film of his own play this offseason, but that it was part of being an NFL rookie. He said things were happening too fast on the field for him to make good choices, and it's evident in his stats: He had only one run over 18 yards, zero 100-yard games and finished the year with a whimper with just 110 yards rushing over the final three games. Moreno has improved his consistency in all facets this offseason, including pass protection and catching the ball. "He should be an impact player in the passing game for us," coach Josh McDaniels predicted.
Footballguys view: Moreno was a fantastic RB at the University of Georgia, but didn't look like the same player his first year in the pros. He had trouble keeping his feet, holding on to the football, and staying healthy last year but is working hard to have a bounce back season this year. The Broncos are committed to making Moreno into their featured runner, even though he'll surrender a few snaps to veteran Correll Buckhalter. |

Broncos | Arrington back for the Broncos Sat Jun 5, 07:19 PM
CBSSports.com reports the Broncos got RB J.J. Arrington, a potential third-down option as a pass catcher out of the backfield, back on the practice field Friday.
Footballguys view: The Broncos signed Arrington as a free agent last season, but waived him because of his knee problems. They re-signed him this year and he could play a 'Kevin Faulk' role for the Broncos in 2010. However, there may not be much of an opportunity for him playing behind Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckhalter. |

Broncos | McDaniels optimistic about O-Linemen coming back from injury Wed May 26, 11:56 AM
Frank Schwab, from the Colorado Springs Gazette, reports offensive tackles Ryan Clady (knee) and Ryan Harris (toe) and guard/center Russ Hochstein (knee) are all recovering from injury and coach Josh McDaniels said he is optimistic about each of them. "We expect and hope for everybody to be back by August," McDaniels said. "Whether or not a guy is ready to participate fully by then, we'll have to wait and see." McDaniels said Harris should return to practice soon, then Hochstein will likely return before Clady. Clady and Harris are two premier tackles, and Denver needs both of them back. The team didn't play as well after Harris got hurt, and Clady might be Denver's most irreplaceable player, an All-Pro left tackle. Hochstein's return will give Denver some options, allowing the team to figure out if Olsen or Walton is best suited to start - with Hochstein filling in where needed. He can play left guard or center. And although the thought of being without any of the three come September is not ideal, McDaniels isn't concerned at all about his offensive line right now.
Footballguys view: The Broncos want to be a power run team in 2010, but they must have improved offensive line play. The injury to Ryan Clady could change what the Broncos want to do early in the season if he's not ready by the time training camp starts. Wide receiver Brandon Marshall is gone to the Dolphins, so we expect the Broncos to be a more run-focused team this year featuring Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckhalter. |

Broncos | Westbrook could reunite with Buckhalter, Dawkins Wed May 12, 03:21 PM
Cecil Lammey, from Footballguys.com, notes that if the Broncos sign RB Brian Westbrook he would be reunited with former Eagles teammates Correll Buckhhalter and Brian Dawkins.
Footballguys view: Westbrook could push a player like J.J. Arrington off the roster if he was signed by the Broncos. Back in Philadelphia Westbrook and Buckhalter made for a nice thunder and lightning duo in the backfield. In Denver Knowshon Moreno would still be the lead back, and should get a majority of the carries. If he's signed Westbrook would be a change of pace runner and third-down back. |

Broncos | Moreno looking for a more complete Year Two Sun Apr 11, 04:20 PM
Dan Parr, from ProFootballWeekly.com, reports Broncos RB Knowshon Moreno had a productive rookie season, but he didn't perform up to the expectations some had for him and gained only 3.8 yards per carry. His fellow back, Correll Buckhalter, recently said Moreno hit a wall late in the year and will benefit from having a full offseason to prepare after holding out for most of training camp in 2009. We're told Moreno's struggles late didn't have anything to do with conditioning. Observers say he was in good shape. Playing more games than he did during a college season simply took its toll.
Footballguys view: Holding out of training camp really took it's toll on Moreno in the second half of his rookie season. He's a talented runner but simply looked tired towards the end of the year. The Broncos are hopeful Moreno can look like the strong running back he did playing for the Georgia Bulldogs in his second-year. |

Broncos | Running game struggling Wed Nov 11, 12:09 PM
Mike Klis, of The Denver Post, reports Denver Broncos RBs Correll Buckhalter and Knowshon Moreno have combined for 84 yards rushing on 32 carries for a 2.6-yard average in the past two games. 'There's no shortcut to it,' head coach Josh McDaniels said. 'We have to work hard at getting ourselves to run the ball better and be more effective running the football and staying out of third-and-long. That alone will allow us to stay balanced. We've got to get the running game going. We've got a lot of things to do better though; it's not just the running game.'
Footballguys view: In recent weeks the Broncos have tried to supplement their ground game with more short passes to the wideouts. They have faced very strong defenses in Baltimore and Pittsburgh, but need to show a bigger commitment to the ground game if they want to get back on the winning track. Running the football not only gives you more time of possession, but it wears the opposing defense down. We expect both Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckhalter to have good games this week against the Washington Redskins. |
