Week 9: vs St. Louis Rams

Mark and Joe say: Great matchup. Colin Kaepernick threw 24/39 for 263 yards passing, one TD and one interception at Denver prior to the 49ers bye, but he was sacked six times for -53 yards and eventually exited early during a 17-42 beat down in Mile High Stadium. Two games ago, he threw 22/35 for 343 yards passing, three TDs and zero interceptions (with zero sacks taken) at St. Louis - and here is the same opponent coming to San Francisco after a week' rest for the 49ers! This matchup looks favorable for the 49ers' passing attack. Last time around the block, the 49ers receivers shared around the TDs, with nine targets for 7/94/1 receiving flowing to Anquan Boldin; one for 1/80/1 going to Brandon Lloyd; and eight for 3/49/1 landing in Michael Crabtree's hands - only Steve Johnson (six for 5/53/0) among the lead wide receivers missed out on the scoring bonanza. The Rams' pass D coughed up 24/28 for 218 net yards passing to Alex Smith last week (zero TDs or interceptions, with two sacks for -8 yards taken). Two games ago, Russell Wilson bombed them for 23/36 yielding 292 net yards, two TDs and zero interceptions thrown, with three sacks taken for -21 yards. To date St. Louis has allowed 11 passing scores vs. just three interceptions (tied for next-to-last in the NFL) and only six sacks (dead last) generated. This s not a feared pass D, folks. Advantage, San Francisco.

Recent Game Summaries

2014 Week 6 vs STL (1 / 1 / 80 / 1 rec)

Lloyd only had one catch, but it was the biggest play of the game. He fooled the corner badly on a stop and go route at the end of the first half to get wide open deep down field. Lloyd had to slow to catch the pass but then outraced the Rams defense for an 80 yard score.

2014 Week 7 vs DEN (6 / 3 / 63 / 0 rec)

Lloyd had several opportunities in this game and continued to get behind the defense. He beat his man badly down the left sideline for his 37 yard reception that was put on the money Kaepernick. He also beat Talib deep two other times but Kaepernick overshot him. Lloyd made a nice sliding catch on a 12 yard slant and a leaping grab in the red zone for a 14 yard gain.

49ers | Stevie Johnson not frustrated with role (Fri Oct 31, 02:18 PM) - San Francisco 49ers WR Stevie Johnson, who is behind WRs Anquan Boldin, Michael Crabtree and Brandon Lloyd on the depth chart, isn't frustrated by his role in the offense. Johnson has 25 catches for 315 yards and three touchdowns this year, and he had 1,000 yards receiving in three of his four years with the Buffalo Bills. “No frustration at all,” Johnson said. “(The) only sense of frustration is being a competitor, you know, wanting to do more. But it ain’t like there’s a bunch of pansies in front of me.'

Our View: Johnson (and Brandon Lloyd) are playing as well as they did in their heydays, which is great for Colin Kaepernick, but bad for Michael Crabtree and Anquan Boldin, as the WR opportunity is now being split four ways in an offense that tends to skew run-heavy when the 49ers dictate the game to their opponents.

49ers | Stevie Johnson very productive (Fri Oct 24, 02:39 PM) - San Francisco 49ers WR Stevie Johnson has played only 20 percent of the snaps in the last month, but he's been the team's most effective receiver in that time. WR Brandon Lloyd has played 40 percent of the offensive snaps, but QB Colin Kaepernick has a passer rating of 127.8 on passes to Johnson and just 87.8 to Lloyd.

Our View: Both of them are capping the Anquan Boldin and Michael Crabtree's weekly value without creating much of their own. It is a help for Colin Kaepernick's value as a passer.
