News you need to know

From the upgrade/downgrade report (Mon Oct 20): Lloyd would have had a big week if Colin Kaepernick hadn't misfired when he was behind the defense. It's hard to believe a wide receiver who was out of the league last year and in his 30s is a weekly big play threat, but the proof is on the film. If Lloyd can get more consistent targets via 49ers wide receiver injuries, he might even be startable by the end of the seaosn.

Recent Game Summaries

2014 Week 5 vs KC (5 / 3 / 76 / 0 rec)

Lloyd ran out of the relative obscurity of the last couple of years to enjoy a decent day. Lloyd was targeted five times by Kapernick, one more than Crabtree, and made a highlight reel catch down the left sideline in which Lloyd seemed to levitate. Still, Lloyd is likely not a viable fantasy play as San Francisco's fourth receiving option, maybe fifth.

2014 Week 6 vs STL (1 / 1 / 80 / 1 rec)

Lloyd only had one catch, but it was the biggest play of the game. He fooled the corner badly on a stop and go route at the end of the first half to get wide open deep down field. Lloyd had to slow to catch the pass but then outraced the Rams defense for an 80 yard score.

2014 Week 7 vs DEN (6 / 3 / 63 / 0 rec)

Lloyd had several opportunities in this game and continued to get behind the defense. He beat his man badly down the left sideline for his 37 yard reception that was put on the money Kaepernick. He also beat Talib deep two other times but Kaepernick overshot him. Lloyd made a nice sliding catch on a 12 yard slant and a leaping grab in the red zone for a 14 yard gain.

49ers | Stevie Johnson very productive (Fri Oct 24, 02:39 PM) - San Francisco 49ers WR Stevie Johnson has played only 20 percent of the snaps in the last month, but he's been the team's most effective receiver in that time. WR Brandon Lloyd has played 40 percent of the offensive snaps, but QB Colin Kaepernick has a passer rating of 127.8 on passes to Johnson and just 87.8 to Lloyd.

Our View: Both of them are capping the Anquan Boldin and Michael Crabtree's weekly value without creating much of their own. It is a help for Colin Kaepernick's value as a passer.
