Jets | Gang Green reached out to Steve Smith    Wed Jun 7, 12:00 AM

The New York Jets recently contacted WR Steve Smith (Ravens) to gauge his interest in coming out of retirement and playing in 2017, according to the NFL Network's Kimberly Jones.

Footballguys view: Why in the world would Smith want to come back and play for the Jets? They're likely going to tank this year and going 6-10 is probably a pipe dream for one of the worst franchises in the league. If Smith were to return (seems doubtful) it would be for a Super Bowl contender.

Ravens | Could Steve Smith return?    Wed Jan 11, 11:28 AM

Recently retired Baltimore Ravens WR Steve Smith isn't being ruled out for a return in 2017, according to Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti. 'I haven't given up hope that (he) is going to come walking in here in September,' Bisciotti said. 'We'll see about that character. I wouldn't count him out.'

Footballguys view: Never say never in the NFL. Smith has a fire that burns hot, and he'll likely miss the grind of the league. He retired to spend more time with his family, and that may be what keeps him from returning. Either way, it's been a great run for Smith and we expect to see him in Canton some day.

Ravens | Steve Smith hangs up cleats    Fri Jan 6, 09:52 AM

Baltimore Ravens WR Steve Smith announced his retirement Friday, Jan. 6.

Footballguys view: What a joy it's been to watch Smith in the pros. A third-round pick out of Utah in 2003, Smith played with fire and intensity that was rarely outdone on the football field. A smaller receiver, Smith never backed down from a challenge and made some big time catches in clutch moments. He finishes his Hall of Fame career with 1,031 catches, 14,731 receiving yards and 81 touchdowns.

Ravens | Steve Smith finishes with 34 yards    Sun Jan 1, 04:47 PM

Baltimore Ravens WR Steve Smith caught three passes for 34 yards against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 17.

Footballguys view: Smith had a quiet last game in the NFL, but he's a Hall of Fame consideration and a player that many will be compared to in the future. He defied expectations to be relevant in fantasy leagues one last time after his achilles was described as "raw shredded chicken" after a double rupture ended his 2015.

Ravens | Steve Smith will retire after season    Wed Dec 28, 04:18 PM

Baltimore Ravens WR Steve Smith announced Wednesday, Dec. 28, that he will retire at the end of the regular season.

Footballguys view: This is a bummer. We were hoping that after a disappointing season for the Ravens, Smith would come back for one more year. A third-round pick in 2001, Smith has over 1,000 receptions and over 14,000 receiving yards. In his final game on Sunday, we expect the Ravens to feature Smith early and often.

Ravens | Steve Smith added to injury report    Thu Dec 22, 04:09 PM

Baltimore Ravens WR Steve Smith (thigh) was limited in practice Thursday, Dec. 22.

Footballguys view: Smith is facing a tough overall defense, but should serve as a solid middle of the road type receiver. Joe Flacco will look for him often but the Steelers will keep his overall ceiling lower than we'd like.

Baltimore Ravens WR Steve Smith hauled in eight receptions for 99 yards and a touchdown in the Week 11 game against the Dallas Cowboys. He was targeted nine times.

Footballguys view: Smith passed 1000 receptions and was locked in as Joe Flacco's #1 receiver. Once healthy earlier in the season, Smith had back to back eight reception games. He should be slotted in as a strong PPR WR2 going into a matchup with Cincinnati.

Baltimore Ravens WR Steve Smith (ankle) was a full participant in practice Friday, Nov. 4. He's being listed as questionable for the team's Week 9 contest Sunday, Nov. 6, versus the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Ravens | Steve Smith limited in practice    Thu Nov 3, 09:40 PM

Baltimore Ravens WR Steve Smith (ankle) was listed as a limited participant in practice Thursday, Nov. 3.

Ravens | Steve Smith out of practice    Wed Nov 2, 12:01 PM

Baltimore Ravens WR Steve Smith (ankle) is out of practice Wednesday, Nov. 2.

Ravens | Steve Smith listed as doubtful again    Fri Oct 21, 02:59 PM

Baltimore Ravens WR Steve Smith (ankle) has been listed as doubtful for the team's Week 7 game Sunday, Oct. 23, versus the New York Jets. He also sat out practice again Friday, Oct. 21.

Footballguys view: Mike Wallace will be the #1 receiver this week, but Joe Flacco is hurting and he might see a lot of Darrelle Revis. Dennis Pitta will also see more targets with Smith out, but he is only a low ceiling PPR play at tight end.

Ravens | Steve Smith sits again    Thu Oct 20, 11:44 AM

Baltimore Ravens WR Steve Smith (ankle) remains out of practice Thursday, Oct. 20.

Footballguys view: This is as expected and he probably is at least a week or two away from being able to contribute. The next man up is Mike Wallace, who should be a solid WR3 start against a terrible Jets secondary. The only hangup could be that it's likely Ryan Mallett starts, as Joe Flacco is hurt.

Ravens | Steve Smith misses practice Friday    Fri Oct 14, 01:24 PM

Baltimore Ravens WR Steve Smith (ankle) sat out of practice again Friday, Oct. 14, and has yet to practice this week as the team continues to prepare for its Week 6 showdown with the New York Giants.

Footballguys view: Mike Wallace should be the de facto #1 against the Giants with Dennis Pitta also possibly getting more targets. Terrance West is setting up as the centerpiece of the new balanced offense. Baltimore's bye is in Week 8, so we might not see Smith until Week 9.

Ravens | Steve Smith sits out again    Thu Oct 13, 12:17 PM

Baltimore Ravens WR Steve Smith (ankle) did not participate in practice Thursday, Oct. 13.

Footballguys view: Everyone takes a half step up here if Smith doesn't play (and it seems like he will not). Mike Wallace becomes a WR3, but Kamar Aiken and Breshard Perriman's moves to WR6 can be considered negligible.

Ravens | Steve Smith unlikely for Week 6    Wed Oct 12, 11:54 AM

Updating previous reports, Baltimore Ravens WR Steve Smith (ankle) is unlikely to play in Week 6, in the opinion of beat writer Jamison Hensley. Hensley expressed the doubt in an interview on Sirius XM Fantasy radio Wednesday, Oct. 12.

Footballguys view: Keep an eye on his practice status this Friday, but don't expect the veteran to be ready. That means we could see more from Mike Wallace, and it might give a few more looks to guys like Kamar Aiken or Breshad Perriman.

Ravens | Steve Smith posts 111 yards, TD    Sun Oct 2, 10:49 PM

Baltimore Ravens WR Steve Smith rolled up eight receptions for 111 yards and a touchdown in the Week 4 game against the Oakland Raiders. He was targeted a team-high 11 times.

Footballguys view: Smith looked as good as he did when he was a near WR1 last year before tearing up his achilles. This offense should give him a chance to get a lot of targets in every game, so he belongs in our lineups against Washington next week as at least a WR3/Flex.

Ravens | Steve Smith to shine in Week 4?    Sat Oct 1, 11:32 PM

Baltimore Ravens WR Steve Smith faces the Oakland Raiders in Week 4, and last year, he had 10 catches for 150 yards against Oakland.

Footballguys view: Smith's play and usage is trending up, so he should be considered a good bet for at least 5-6 catches today. He's a solid WR3/Flex in PPR leagues.

Ravens | Steve Smith leads team in receiving    Sun Sep 25, 05:42 PM

Baltimore Ravens WR Steve Smith caught eight passes for 87 yards against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 3.

Footballguys view: Smith is looking better each week, and the Ravens offense will remain pass heavy enough to keep him in PPR WR3/Flex consideration each week. He should be in consideration next week against a Raiders pass defense that was very generous until they faced the Titans today.

Ravens | Steve Smith has decent game    Sun Sep 18, 05:36 PM

Baltimore Ravens WR Steve Smith caught three passes for 64 yards against the Cleveland Browns in Week 2.

Footballguys view: Smith had a small flurry of productivity, but wasn't one of the main targets for Joe Flacco. It's possible that he will round into form as the season goes on, and he is at least worth holding through a very good matchup against Jacksonville next week to see if his production continues to trend up.

Ravens | Steve Smith held in check    Sun Sep 11, 05:23 PM

Baltimore Ravens WR Steve Smith caught five passes for 19 yards against the Buffalo Bills in Week 1.

Footballguys view: Smith led the team in targets, although he wasn't showing the explosiveness to be more than a possession receiver. He's the #1, but on a team that had 10 different players catch a pass today. Consider Smith bench depth heading into Week 2 against Cleveland.

Ravens | Baltimore confident in Steve Smith    Sat Sep 10, 12:52 PM

Baltimore Ravens WR Steve Smith is still a 'great player' in the mind of head coach John Harbaugh, who suggested there is 'no reason' why he will not play 'great' against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 1.

Footballguys view: We are so happy that Smith decided to play one more season. That being said, we've only got him as a WR6 this week against Buffalo.

Ravens | Two Baltimore receivers won't play    Thu Aug 25, 04:29 PM

Baltimore Ravens WRs Steve Smith (Achilles') and Breshad Perriman (knee) are not expected to play Saturday, Aug. 27, against the Detroit Lions. They did not practice Thursday, Aug. 25.

Footballguys view: No sense in rushing either one back before Week 1. We see Smith as a solid WR5, as it is unlikely he gets back into the groove he was in before his injury last season. Having missed a whole season, Perriman is a bit behind and so we see him as no more than a WR7, if that.

Ravens | Kamar Aiken's numbers could suffer    Fri Aug 19, 12:49 AM

Baltimore Ravens WR Kamar Aiken had 25 catches for 333 yards in eight games with WR Steve Smith last year, and Aiken had 50 catches for 611 yards in the eight games Smith missed.

Footballguys view: Aiken was a good sleeper going at least 3-4 rounds after his high level of production in the second half of 2015, but Smith's return greatly caps his upside unless Smith suffers a setback or is a shadow of himself. He's dropping on our draft radar.

Ravens | Steve Smith activated    Wed Aug 17, 02:04 PM

Baltimore Ravens WR Steve Smith (Achilles') was activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list Wednesday, Aug. 17, and likely will participate in practice Monday, Aug. 22.

Footballguys view: We are so happy that Smith didn't retire. He may not be the player he used to be, but Smith has made a career of proving people wrong. We expect him to help move the chains for the Ravens passing game and see him as a WR5 for fantasy owners in 2016.

Ravens | Steve Smith's injury was more severe    Fri Jul 29, 10:20 AM

Updating previous reports, Baltimore Ravens WR Steve Smith (Achilles') suffered a double rupture of his Achilles' last season, which surgeon, Robert Anderson, said was the first one he had ever seen.

Footballguys view: Smith has been defying physics and logic for his entire career, but this sounds like a real cap on his upside this season, and his ability to be on the field for Week 1. The more we learn about the Ravens wide receiver corps this season, the more we like Kamar Aiken.

Ravens | Kamar Aiken not a projected starter    Thu Jul 21, 07:07 PM

Baltimore Ravens WRs Steve Smith and Mike Wallace are projected as the two starting wide receivers for Baltimore, according to ESPN.com's Jamison Hensley.

Footballguys view: We have both ranked as WR4/WR5 options. Smith was on fire last year before he got hurt so we could see a return to similar production, but he's old and it's hard to buy in heavy on that. Wallace has failed everywhere he's gone after he left the Steelers, and we don't know that we can get enthusiastic about a new spot for him just because Joe Flacco has an immense arm. We feel better about Old Man Smith over Wallace, in point of fact.
