Distractions like playing wide receiver should not be an issue for Devin Hester in Atlanta. He is there to be a returner.
The temptation to subject receiver Harry Douglas to injury risk on punt returns should be over for the Falcons now that Devin Hester is available.

Week 3: vs Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Mark and Joe say: Good matchup. Matt Ryan followed up his career-best opening-day performance with a stinker at Cincinnati: 24/44 for 231 yards passing, one TD and three interceptions thrown, with two sacks taken for -19 yards. Julio Jones had a respectable day with 13 targets for 7/88/1 receiving, followed by Roddy White (eight for 5/42/0) and Harry Douglas (eight for 4/38/0). Levine Toilolo (tree for 2/13/0) and Devin Hester (one for 1/2/0) lost a lot of their luster in Week 2 without much in the way of receiving yards and no TDs scored. We'll see if Ryan can bounce back in Week 3. The Buccaneers allowed 24/34 for 221 net yards, two TDs and zero interceptions to Derek Anderson on opening day, and lost 14-20. In Week 2, the Buccaneers followed up allowing the following to St. Louis' third-string quarterback, Austin Davis; 22/29 for 220 net yards passing, zero TDs or interceptions thrown, with two sacks taken for -15 yards. Tampa Bay was 17th in the NFL last season averaging 238 net passing yards allowed per game, with 30 passing scores handed out over 16 games (almost two per game, the same pace Anderson put up last week). They were tied for third in the league with 21 interceptions generated, but only had 35 sacks (tied for 23rd in the league). Tampa has started 2014 ranked 16th in the NFL averaging 220.5 net passing yards allowed per game. Against the so-so Buccaneers' pass D, Ryan and company have a good shot at rebounding nicely during the third game of the season.

Recent Game Summaries

2014 Week 1 vs NO (6 / 5 / 99 / 0 rec)

The Falcons weren't lying when they said they were excited about using Hester in the offense. From the onset of the game, the Matt Ryan targeted Hester. The receiver was open a crossing route on 3rd and 11 during the first series, but Ryan overshot the target due to pressure. Despite the inauspicious beginning, Hester continued to get open and make plays, including a 3rd and 8 corner route for 35 yards up the left sideline where Ryan did a strong job of climbing a collapsing pocket to find the receiver. Hester also gained 19 yards over middle at end of half with less than 30 seconds to prolong a drive that ended with a field goal. The receiver then earned 15 yards on a crossing where he broke his route under Julio Jones' release - something the Saints does with Brandin Cooks. In fact, don't be surprised of Hester earns a lot of packages that seem similar to Cooks. Hester was had the second-most receiving yards on the team this week. Don't be surprised if Hester continues running free against nickel and dime corners or mismatched linebackers in this offense.

2014 Week 2 vs CIN (1 / 1 / 2 / 0 rec)

Hester had an excellent return to open the game with a 36-yard run. He was patient but decisive weaving through three different lanes to work up the right hash. He also earned a quick throw-out for two yards on second down during the first series, but Adam Jones stood-up Hester and dropped the receiver immediately for a minimal gain. After this play, Hester did not receive another target and his only other touches were in the return game, including a nice job of working from the end zone to the opposite sideline for 34 yards. It appeared that Atlanta had a very different game plan for the slot receivers compared to what it did against the Saints
