WR Devin Hester - Atlanta Falcons
|5-11, 185||Born: 11-4-1982||College: Miami (Fl)||Drafted: Round 2|
Distractions like playing wide receiver should not be an issue for Devin Hester in Atlanta. He is there to be a returner.
The temptation to subject receiver Harry Douglas to injury risk on punt returns should be over for the Falcons now that Devin Hester is available.
News you need to know
From the upgrade/downgrade report (Mon Sep 29): Hester made the most of Harry Douglas's absence, and he should be a bigger part of this high-flying pass offense going forward. If Roddy White or Julio Jones miss time, he could start and be a quality WR3/Flex. Hester is somewhere that has embraced his role as a receiver, so don't assume his newfound numbers are a fluke.
General News (Wed Oct 1): partially participated in Wednesday's practice.
Week 5: at New York Giants

2014 Week 2 vs CIN (1 / 1 / 2 / 0 rec)
Hester had an excellent return to open the game with a 36-yard run. He was patient but decisive weaving through three different lanes to work up the right hash. He also earned a quick throw-out for two yards on second down during the first series, but Adam Jones stood-up Hester and dropped the receiver immediately for a minimal gain. After this play, Hester did not receive another target and his only other touches were in the return game, including a nice job of working from the end zone to the opposite sideline for 34 yards. It appeared that Atlanta had a very different game plan for the slot receivers compared to what it did against the Saints
2014 Week 3 vs TB (1 / 1 / 25 / 0 rec, 1 / 20 / 1 rush)
Tampa almost got into this game when Levine Toilolo was stripped after the catch with 7:25 in the first quarter inside the Tampa 25, but Devin Hester stripped the defensive back inside the Tampaa, preventing a Tampa drive at midfield. Hester began the second quarter with an end around up the left sideline for a 20-yard score, earning good blocks from Julio Jones at the 10 near the sideline and fullback Patrick Demarco. Hester also split a long, narrow seam up the left flat for a touchdown on a 66-yard punt return that broke Deion Sanders record of 19 total return touchdowns. He was only targeted once as a receiver, earning 25 yards on an intermediate route.
2014 Week 4 vs MIN (7 / 5 / 70 / 1 rec)
The former Bear almost scored in the first half on a double-move against cornerback Xavier Rhodes, earning a step on the corner. However, the defender knocked the ball loose from Hester's grip in the end zone on an excellent throw. Matt Ryan later overthrew Hester on a drag route and the receiver had to make the catch near the boundary at an angle where he couldn't turn up field for a positive gain. Hester's biggest play was a quick swing pass on third down for a 36-yard score. Hester fought through a wrap and spun off a hit for most of the yardage up the right sideline. He also put an effective shake move on a defender to earn 15 yards up the left flat on a fourth-quarter pass. Hester actually had the most productive day among the three Falcons receivers.
