WR Devin Hester - Atlanta Falcons
|5-11, 185||Born: 11-4-1982||College: Miami (Fl)||Drafted: Round 2|
Distractions like playing wide receiver should not be an issue for Devin Hester in Atlanta. He is there to be a returner.
The temptation to subject receiver Harry Douglas to injury risk on punt returns should be over for the Falcons now that Devin Hester is available.
Week 8: vs Detroit Lions
Mark and Joe say: Bad matchup. The Falcons' offensive line is in ruins as of Week 8 - Matt Ryan was sacked five times last Sunday as the team's offensive line continues to struggle with injuries and poor play. Falcons C Peter Konz suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in Week 7. Konz was placed on Reserve/Injured Monday, October 20 and is out for the year. Konz was the team's second-string center as starter Joe Hawley was lost for the year in Week 4. Now, the Falcons will be turning to undrafted free agent James Stone as their starting center. 'We had way too much pressure,' head coach Mike Smith said on Monday, October 20. 'Our quarterback was hit and sacked way too much. There were times where we really didn't have a chance to get the play off, and that's very difficult for a quarterback, and we have to do better with our protection.' The Lions are tied for third in the NFL with 21 sacks this season, and have hit opposing quarterbacks with regularity even when they aren't sacking them. Ryan's likely to have a long day when the Lions come to dance at Wembley Stadium in London this weekend. As the pressure on Ryan has increased, his success as a passer has decreased drastically. Once the NFL's top-ranked passing attack, the Falcons eked out 29/44 for 228 yards passing, one TD and zero interceptions with five sacks taken for -42 yards last weekend. Two games back, Ryan threw 19/37 for 271 yards passing, one TD and one interception while taking four sacks for -26 yards. Julio Jones has cooled off considerably of late, with a healthy 20 targets over the last two games, but just 9/124/0 receiving to show for them - Roddy White has seen 21 for 12/140/1 while tight end Levine Toilolo has been the third-highest in targets over the last two weeks, with 11 for 5/54/0 to his credit - Toilolo has dropped several catchable balls. Antone Smith (six for 6/63/1), Devonta Freeman (eight for 7/43/0) and Devin Hester (six for 4/51/0) have chipped in around the edges - Harry Douglas has been sidelined by a foot ailment for weeks now. The Lions are #1 in the NFL in terms of total defense, averaging 290.3 yards allowed per game, and they are second in the NFL in terms of total points allowed, just one point behind Baltimore, at 105 given up by Detroit. Detroit ranks seventh in the NFL averaging 216.9 net passing yards allowed per game, with seven passing scores given up balanced by eight interceptions (tied for third in the NFL) and 21 sacks (tied-third) generated to date. Drew Brees had a surprising amount of success against the Lions last week (28/45 for 335 net yards, two TDs with one interception thrown, with one sack taken for -7 yards), but he lost the game due to the crucial interception late in the contest. Teddy Bridgewater was crushed by the Lions two weeks back (23/37 for 143 net yards, zero TDs and three interceptions thrown, with eight sacks for -42 yards taken). The Saints' numbers look like an aberration and not the beginning of a trend for this excellent unit. Advantage, Detroit.

2014 Week 5 vs NYG (4 / 2 / 16 / 0 rec, 1 / 3 / 0 rush)
The Falcons' No.3 receiver should have scored in this game. He ran an effective step with an outside move at the top of the route and then broke inside towards the end zone. However, Hester flattened his break and Matt Ryan led Hester a couple of steps inside and out of the receiver's reach. It appeared Hester overcorrected his break based on his adjustment a step or two into his break and this was the difference between an incomplete pass and a 21-yard touchdown. He was featured on an end around after the two-minute warning, but the Giants' defense strung out the run and limited Hester to four yards. The final only two catches Hester had in this game came late in the fourth quarter when the contest was out of hand.
2014 Week 6 vs CHI (1 / 1 / 23 / 0 rec)
The extent of Hester's day was a 23-yard gain as the slot receiver to the left of the formation on a slant against the Bears' zone. Hester's other reception off a Matt Ryan scramble was nullified by offsetting penalties at the line of scrimmage.
2014 Week 7 vs BAL (5 / 3 / 28 / 0 rec)
The Falcons' third receiver gained four on a 3rd and 17 check-down to the flat that the Ravens surrounded easily and limited Hester in the first half. Hester had two more targets in this game and one drew a facemask penalty late in the game that earned Atlanta an even closer look in the red zone. Like his teammates on the depth chart, Hester's production is linked to pass protection and it makes him a boom-bust option.
Latest NewsFalcons | Friday injury report for Week 7 (Fri Oct 17, 01:10 PM) - Atlanta Falcons DT Jonathan Babineaux (knee), OG Justin Blalock (back), WR Devin Hester (hamstring), LB Prince Shembo (knee) and Nathan Stupar (knee) all fully practiced Friday, Oct. 17, and are probable. link to story Falcons | Devin Hester does some drills (Thu Oct 16, 03:35 PM) - Atlanta Falcons WR Devin Hester (hamstring) was limited during practice Thursday, Oct. 16. Our View: Hester remains a not-very-exciting receiver and with a hamstring injury, we have to wonder how much he'll show in the return game. He's not worth a start in leagues unless you get points for return yards and even then he is a long shot.

Hester likely would be the No. 3 receiver if he is active for the game. Our View: Hester doesn't have much fantasy value - perhaps as a WR6 if you don't get points for return yards, perhaps WR5 if you do. In the end, even with return yards you are just rolling the dice and probably have better options.
link to story Falcons | Devin Hester questionable for Week 6 (Fri Oct 10, 01:18 PM) - Atlanta Falcons WR Devin Hester (hamstring) is listed as questionable for Week 6 against the Chicago Bears. Our View: Hester is only a fringe player in very deep leagues that don't have return yards, but he could have something extra in the tank against his old team this week.
