NFL | Clinton Portis played through concussions    Mon Jul 1, 09:45 AM

Former NFL RB Clinton Portis said he played through concussions all the time. 'It was just the way things were at the time,' Portis said. 'I'd get hit hard and be woozy. I'd be dizzy. I'd take a play off and then go back in. Sometimes when I went back into the game, I still couldn't see straight. This happened all the time. Sometimes once or twice a game.'

Footballguys view: This matches up with what many of us experienced as kids playing sports, when you would just take a few plays off when you got your "bell rung". The crucial fact that will determine how the hundreds of lawsuits against the NFL will turn out is whether the NFL was aware of the danger of players continuing to play immediately after suffering head injuries.

NFL | Clinton Portis set to retire     Tue Aug 21, 02:38 PM

The Washington Redskins announced a retirement press conference Thursday, Aug. 23, for RB Clinton Portis.

Footballguys view: Portis splashed onto the scene as a rookie with the Denver Broncos in 2002. He rushed for over 1,500 yards each of his first two seasons in the league with Denver. However, in 2004 the team decided to trade him to the Washington Redskins for Cornerback Champ Bailey. He had an up and down career in Washington and ends his career just 77 yards shy of 10,000 for his career. Portis will also be remember for his wacky interview personae like Southeast Jerome.

NFL | Clinton Portis drawing interest from teams    Tue Mar 13, 08:59 PM

The agent for free-agent RB Clinton Portis (Redskins) (knee) said Tuesday, March 13, that his client has two upcoming visits with NFL teams, and he has been contacted by four clubs with an interest. Portis did not play last season as he recuperated from a serious groin injury.

Footballguys view: It's interesting that teams would show interest now at the start of free agency when they could've signed Portis as a street free agent starting last month. He wore down over his pro career and we think it will be difficult for him to find a new home in 2012.

NFL | Clinton Portis has passion to return    Fri Feb 17, 10:13 AM

Free-agent RB Clinton Portis (Redskins) said that he has his passion back for football after being 'heartbroken' following his release from the Washington Redskins. Portis sat out the 2011 season. 'I'm ready to go back, ready to work things out and I'm open to idea of going out to prove that I can still play,' Portis said. 'I just turned 30 and with nine years in the NFL and six 1,000-yard seasons that's enough right there to show what I can do. I'm just ready to go prove to whatever team that's ready and willing to open the doors to go out and prove it.'

NFL | Clinton Portis receiving interest    Thu Feb 16, 04:27 PM

Jason Fletcher, agent for free-agent RB Clinton Portis (Redskins), said teams has expressed interest in Portis and is expected to meet with some teams during the NFL Scouting Combine. Portis said private doctors have medically cleared him to play next season.

Footballguys view: Portis isn't the same back he used to be but there might be a team willing to sign him for veteran insurance. With this talent heavy RB class in the draft it will be difficult for Portis to stick on a roster.

Bengals | Work out running backs    Tue Sep 27, 03:25 PM

The Cincinnati Bengals have worked out free-agent RBs Larry Johnson (Dolphins) and Clinton Portis (Redskins). Portis had previously worked out with the Tennessee Titans, Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks.

Footballguys view: Portis has looked good in his private workouts according to reports and may just be the answer here. Johnson has been with the Bengals before but is not the same player he used to be. While Benson is out the team will ask more from Bernard Scott, but are keeping their options open when looking for other backs.

Patriots | Signing Clinton Portis appears unlikely    Sat Aug 20, 12:53 AM

The New England Patriots' visit with free-agent RB Clinton Portis (Redskins) should be viewed as due diligence at this point in time. The team was likely intrigued about Portis, who has questions about his health. The Patriots are currently overloaded at the running back position, so the likelihood of signing Portis appears to be remote at best.

Footballguys view: With the rash of RB injuries spreading across the league we could see Portis join a new team very soon.

Lions | Might reach out to trio of veterans    Mon Aug 8, 11:25 PM

The Detroit Lions, in the market for a dependable short-yardage back, might look at a handful of free agents. The possibilities include free-agent RBs Tiki Barber (Giants), Jerome Harrison (Eagles) and Clinton Portis (Redskins).

Giants | Clinton Portis would like to join team    Wed May 25, 10:27 AM

Free-agent RB Clinton Portis (Redskins) said during a radio interview that he would like to sign with the New York Giants once the lockout is over.

Footballguys view: Portis like the Giants offensive line and feels they have a quarterback in Eli Manning who will be allowed to run his system true to form. Portis mentioned Michael Vick, Peyton Manning, and Tom Brady as other QBs he'd like to join. He's no longer an elite level RB and it could be difficult for him to find a guaranteed contract this offseason.

Redskins | Clinton Portis thinks he has a lot left to offer    Wed Dec 29, 10:37 PM

Washington Redskins RB Clinton Portis (groin) made an appearance in the team locker room Wednesday, Dec. 29, reports The Associated Press. Portis, who is on season-ending Injured Reserve, said he feels he has a lot left in the tank. 'I know I got good football left in me, being fresh, the last two years not having a lot of contact,' Portis said. 'The two injuries, the concussion and the groin, was just really fluke injuries. I don't think that's a wear and tear like, 'Oh, his body broke down.''

Footballguys view: We must disagree with Southeast Jerome on this one. His body just can't handle the punishment of being an NFL RB any longer.

Washington Redskins RB Clinton Portis (abdomen) is unlikely to return to the team next season unless he is willing to restructure his contract, according to Matt Mosley, of ESPN.com. Head coach Mike Shanahan doesn't think Portis' career is over, however. 'I don't think there's any question about it,' Shanahan said. 'He's got such a strong will. It all depends on does he come back a hundred percent? Does he want to come back and play? He's got that inner drive that most people don't have. He wants to compete. But obviously, he's got to get well.'

Footballguys view: Portis just can not phyiscally stand up to the punishment an NFL RB endures for very long these days. He has had a great career, but it is in its final stages.
