Lions | New role could result in less sacks for Julian Peterson    Thu Sep 2, 11:25 AM

Detroit Lions LB Julian Peterson could have a hard time surpassing the 4.5 sacks he had last year, according to Dave Birkett, of the Detroit Free Press. Peterson is playing a different role on third downs this year. Used as a rush end in many passing situations last year, Peterson is now dropping into coverage as a nickel linebacker.

Footballguys view: Detroit switched Peterson's role after they upgraded their defensive line by adding Ndamukong Suh in the NFL Draft, trading for Corey Williams and getting Kyle Vanden Bosch in free agency.

Lions | Believe improved DL will help Julian Peterson    Fri Jul 16, 04:52 PM

The Detroit Lions believe the improvements they have made on the defensive line will help LB Julian Peterson because he is more productive blitzing in a standing position and the linemen will take on blockers, which will allow Peterson to have a clear path, according to MLive.com's Tom Kowalski.

Lions | Questions at linebacker    Fri Jul 16, 02:23 PM

The Detroit Lions coaching staff is high on LB DeAndre Levy, who has taken over at middle linebacker, reports Tim Twentyman, of The Detroit News. He was impressive at times last year, but also played like a rookie. LB Zack Follett is also being tested at outside linebacker. While he appears to have the physical tools, he needs to get the playbook down so he is not caught out of position. LB Julian Peterson, who mans the other outside spot, needs to contribute more than the 76 tackles and 4.5 sacks that he did a year ago based off the $7.5 million the Lions invested.

Footballguys view: Levy is a good candidate to finish in top ten LBs this year. Punish your leaguemates if they let him fall too far in your IDP draft.

Lions | Julian Peterson playing more traditional LB spot    Thu May 20, 10:07 PM

Detroit Lions LB Julian Peterson has been playing more of a traditional linebacker spot during the team's OTAs, reports The Detroit News' Tim Twentyman. Peterson played as more of a hybrid linebacker/defensive end position last season. Head coach Jim Schwartz said, "You'll probably see Julian be in a little bit more situations package-wise as a pass rusher and as a blitzer. Where he's not just strictly a defensive end or little bit more of a hybrid position. I think that's a good thing. It's a change for him, but it's a result of adding guys that can rush the passer upfront."

Footballguys view: The change may give Peterson's numbers enough of bump to make him rosterable in most IDP leagues, but we wouldn't be running out to get him on the news.

Lions | Peterson may be too expensive to hold onto    Fri Jan 15, 02:36 AM

Tom Kowalski, of Mlive.com, reports Detroit Lions LB Julian Peterson is scheduled to make $7.5 million in 2010 and a combined $16.5 million the following two seasons. Kowalski doesn't feel the Lions want to pay that much, but Peterson may not be willing to accept a pay cut. Whether Peterson remains in Detroit for another year may come down to whether the Lions believe they cannot afford to lose him.

Lions | Peterson to line up at DE on passing downs    Sat Jul 18, 04:53 PM

Tom Kowalski, of MLive.com, reports Detroit Lions LB Julian Peterson will line up at defensive end on passing downs so he can be a pass rushing option.

Footballguys view: The Lions should be able to have a formidable pass rush with Peterson, Cliff Avril and DeWayne White. Peterson is still a decent LB3/LB4 in IDP leagues, but his role will limit his fantasy upside.

Lions | Peterson looking to turn fortunes around    Tue Jul 14, 11:21 AM

Carlos Monarrez, of the Detroit Free Press, reports Detroit Lions LB Julian Peterson said the team is looking forward to prove the critics wrong after last season's winless campaign. 'Football is an adverse sport anyway. But coming from 0-16, a lot of people in the sports world, analysts, have written us down as the 32nd team already, knowing that anything can change, subject to change, injuries can happen, anything,' Peterson said. 'But we're not looking upon that and try to say, 'Oh, we're going to be the same old Lions from last year.' It's a whole new year. We've got a whole new coaching staff, whole new players, a whole new mentality. So this is going to be great for all of us.'

Footballguys view: After an 0-16 season there's only one way to go and that's up. It's doubtful the Lions would make a playoff run in 2009, but in the NFL anything can happen. The post Matt Millen era is getting off to a pretty good start and the Lions are putting the pieces in place to be a good team in the near future.

Lions | Sims says linebackers have great chemistry    Mon Jul 13, 12:14 PM

Carlos Monarrez, of the Detroit Free Press, reports Detroit Lions LB Ernie Sims said he has developed great chemistry with new LBs Julian Peterson and Larry Foote. 'I like them,' Sims said. 'We sit here and play around all the time. But the most imporant part is when we're on the field, and the chemistry we have on the field is great.' Sims added, 'Those guys, they aren't like me. They have been to Pro Bowls, they have been to Super Bowls. They know what it takes to be successful and win games in this league. And you've got me on the other hand. I just know one thing: to play hard and make plays. So when you put those two together you've got great chemistry.'

Footballguys view: More good news post-Matt Millen coming from Detroit. Apologies to Kevin Smith, but the Lions are doubtful to make a playoff run in 2009. However, they could bounce back quickly and be more successful than anyone is anticipating. One thing is certain - the Lions are no longer going to be the pushover they were last year.
