San Diego Chargers general manager Tom Telesco said last month that he plans to infuse more youth on the roster, but he also added that some veterans are needed. If TE Randy McMichael is to stick around, he is likely to be asked to take a cut in pay. McMichael, who turns 34 in June, is due $1.25 million in base salary with a $250,000 roster bonus.

Chargers | Several candidates to be released Sun Feb 10, 04:40 PM
San Diego Chargers FB Le'Ron McClain, TE Randy McMichael, WR Eddie Royal, OT Jared Gaither and OT Jeromey Clary could be candidates to be released this offseason.
Footballguys view: The Chargers need to focus on rebuilding their Offensive Line this offseason. They need help all across the line in order to protect QB Philip Rivers better in 2013. Royal was a disappointing free agent signing and may have to move on this season to his third team in three years. |

Chargers | TEs, RBs might be used more to block Thu Nov 17, 11:24 PM
With several injuries along the offensive line for the San Diego Chargers, the tight ends and running backs might be asked to block more in Week 11 against the Chicago Bears. 'They're real active,' RB Ryan Mathews said Thursday, Nov. 17. 'That's going to be a big part (for) us running backs is helping out our linemen a little bit.' TE Randy McMichael was used more in the second half in Week 10 to help out along the line, and that might be the case again in Week 11.
Footballguys view: Pass blocking is Mike Tolbert's forte, so it could be a sign that we will see more of him than Mathews this weekend. |

Chargers | Randy McMichael steps up in Week 3 Sun Sep 25, 09:14 PM
San Diego Chargers TE Randy McMichael had four receptions for 51 yards in Week 3 against the Kansas City Chiefs in place of the injured TE Antonio Gates (foot).
Footballguys view: McMichael flashed moves in the open field like it was five years ago back in Miami. If snakebit Gates owners can't land James Casey off of the waiver wire, McMichael isn't a bad consolation. Be warned that he started well when Gates first went out last year, only to get banged up and fade as the season went on. |

The San Diego Chargers have reached an agreement on a one-year deal to re-sign free-agent TE Randy McMichael. The contract is worth the league's veteran minimum.

Rams | McMichael not getting many snaps in two TE sets Wed Aug 12, 02:29 PM
Mike Sando, of ESPN.com, reports that Billy Najema and Daniel Fells have been getting more work in two TE sets than Randy McMichael. Sando writes, "The Rams are not limiting McMichael for any reason, though the tight end wouldn't mind getting more reps, (head coach Steve) Spagnuolo said."
Footballguys view: McMichael is not the best blocking TE, so this could be part of the reason why he is not often in that run-friendly set. We like him as a deep sleeper TE this year, but this report takes some of the shine away from his sleeper status. |

Rams | McMichael eager to contribute in 2009 Wed May 13, 09:57 AM
Bill Coats, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports St. Louis Rams TE Randy McMichael is looking to bounce back this season after suffering a season-ending right leg injury in 2008. A healthy McMichael figures to be a key component in the West Coast-style offense that offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur is installing, according to head coach Steve Spagnuolo. 'I think I have to prove myself to myself,' McMichael said. 'I don't really worry about what anybody else says. I'm my harshest critic. Nobody pushes me harder than I push myself.'
Footballguys view: The veteran TE will battle Joe Klopfenstein for playing time in 2009. If McMichael can stay healthy it's possible he could match his numbers from 2007. At this point he's nothing more than a backup fantasy TE. |
