NFL | Two-game ban for Malik McDowell    Fri Jul 12, 04:11 PM

Free-agent DT Malik McDowell received a two-game suspension Friday, July 12, for violating the league's conduct policy.

Footballguys view: McDowell is facing three charges from two separate incidents. A second-round pick of the Seahawks in 2017, McDowell never saw the field in Seattle. An injury in an ATV accident could keep him from ever being cleared to play football again. Add in these felony charges (and this suspension) and you can see how McDowell's NFL career could be over before it really got started.

Seahawks | Malik McDowell sued by Seahawks    Fri May 31, 10:34 AM

Former Seattle Seahawks DT Malik McDowell is being sued by the Seahawks alleging he failed to repay the team $799,238, the amount an arbitrator ordered the defensive lineman to give back to the Seahawks.

Footballguys view: McDowell has yet to respond to the arbitrator's ruling. A second-round pick in the 2017 draft, McDowell missed his entire rookie season after suffering a severe head injury in an ATV accident. He was waived by the Seahawks last July and spent 2018 out of the league. McDowell turns 23-years old later this month and it sounds like he wants to resume playing football.

Seahawks | No decision on Malik McDowell    Sat Apr 21, 03:41 PM

Updating a previous report, Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider said the team has not made a decision on DT Malik McDowell (head) at this point and are still waiting for guidance on his situation.

Footballguys view: First-round talent that slipped to the second round last year, McDowell didn't get on the field at all as a rookie after suffering massive injuries in an offseason ATV accident. The Seahawks are expected to release him soon as they continue to revamp their roster.

Seahawks | Malik McDowell to be released    Mon Apr 16, 05:30 PM

Seattle Seahawks DT Malik McDowell (concussion) has not been medically cleared and is expected to be released in the near future, according to a source.

Footballguys view: McDowell had first-round talent, but off-field issues caused him to fall to the early second round...just in last year's draft. His rookie season was a complete wash as an ATV accident caused severe injuries that forced him to the sideline. An arrest in December for disorderly conduct didn't help his chances of making the team, and the Seahawks are ready to move on.

Seahawks | Malik McDowell may miss season    Sun Jul 30, 04:05 PM

Updating a previous report, Seattle Seahawks DT Malik McDowell (undisclosed) could miss the entire 2017 season after he was involved in an accident a few weeks ago, according to head coach Pete Carroll.

Footballguys view: McDowell was injured in a ATV accident and apparently hurt his face and suffered a concussion. His injuries are not career or life-threatening, but his contribution this season will likely be minimal, if he contributes at all.

Seahawks | Malik McDowell signs contract    Fri May 26, 07:30 PM

Seattle Seahawks second-round draft choice DT Malik McDowell has signed a four-year contract worth $6.955 million. The deal includes a $3.198 million signing bonus.

Footballguys view: McDowell is a big-bodied defender with the length to disrupt the quarterback from multiple spots on the line. Don't look at his numbers from college as they're not that impressive, but the potential with McDowell to be a solid pro is there. We'll see if he can take to pro coaching as questions from college about his work ethic and motor abound. He'll serve as a rotational player for the Seahawks.

Seahawks | Malik McDowell leaves practice    Sun May 14, 05:37 PM

Seattle Seahawks DT Malik McDowell (foot) left practice early Sunday, May 14, after his foot was stepped on but he should be fine.

Footballguys view: McDowell is going to line up at end for the Seahawks where his size and wingspan will come in handy. Coming out of Michigan State, there were plenty of questions about McDowell's work ethic but Seattle is a team known to work through those kind of problems with players. We should see the rookie work as a rotational player and potential starter for the Seahawks going forward.

Seahawks | Malik McDowell to move outside    Sat May 13, 11:27 PM

Seattle Seahawks DT Malik McDowell will be used more at defensive end, according to head coach Pete Carroll. 'I'm playing a whole different position,' McDowell said. 'Moving outside and going from taking double teams to taking single blocks here mostly.'

Footballguys view: McDowell has the capability of playing end or tackle on the defensive line. If motivated (sometimes a big IF for the Michigan State prospect), McDowell can be an incredibly disruptive player due to his length and strength when getting after the passer.

Seahawks | Seattle selects Malik McDowell    Fri Apr 28, 07:28 PM

The Seattle Seahawks selected Michigan State DT Malik McDowell with the No. 35 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft Friday, April 28.

Footballguys view: Well at least the Seahawks aren't bucking the tradition of ignoring their offensive line issues. McDowell flashes great ability but is wildly inconsistent. We'll see if the Seahawks can drum that out of him.

Seahawks | Malik McDowell visiting Seahawks    Mon Apr 17, 12:10 PM

Michigan DT Malik McDowell is visiting the Seattle Seahawks Monday, April 17, according to a source.

Footballguys view: McDowell is big, has a large wingspan and can dominate in the middle of the line. That's the good...but the bad is there too. McDowell was known to take plays off in college and his technique can get lazy as the game goes on. He's raw, but the potential is there for him to be one of the more disruptive players in the league.

NFL | Several teams interested in Malik McDowell    Wed Apr 12, 06:52 PM

Michigan State DT Malik McDowell is meeting with the Washington Redskins Wednesday, April 12. He has already met with the Baltimore Ravens, Detroit Lions and Indianapolis Colts. He also worked out for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Footballguys view: McDowell is huge, measuring in at 6'6" 296 pounds and he can be quite disruptive on the defensive line. He's got the length and strength to be dominant inside, but McDowell is known for taking plays off. His technique is incredibly raw, but the upside is there for him to be a Pro Bowl player. He may go off the board at some time in the first round.

Dolphins | Miami worked out Malik McDowell    Sun Apr 2, 06:34 PM

Michigan State DT Malik McDowell had a private workout with Miami Dolphins defensive line coach Terrell Williams last week.

Footballguys view: McDowell could be a first-round pick in the 2017 NFL draft...and he could be a dominate player at the pro level. Emphasis on the "could" part there as McDowell has a ton of work to do in order to play up to his potential. First, he needs technique work to improve his balance, leverage and footwork. Second, McDowell needs to overcome the "lazy" label that some have given him. Finally, McDowell needs to show that he can be a coachable player. The tools (length, strength, athleticism) are all there but he's not a finished product.

Vikings | Minnesota showing interest in Malik McDowell    Wed Mar 22, 03:05 PM

Minnesota Vikings general manager Rick Spielman and head coach Mike Zimmer worked out Michigan State DT Malik McDowell at his pro day Wednesday, March 22.

Footballguys view: McDowell is likely to be a first-round pick in the 2017 NFL draft. He's got the length and strength to attack from the edge, where the potential to be special is there. McDowell didn't put up the expected numbers in 2016 as he dealt with an ankle injury and there's concern that he might be a bit lazy.
