Chargers | Competition for No. 3 RB has not started    Sat May 8, 12:06 AM

Kevin Acee, of the San Diego Union-Tribune, reports San Diego Chargers RB Marcus Mason has yet to be on the field for the team. Mason could compete with RB Shawnbrey McNeal for the team's No. 3 running back job.

Footballguys view: Mason has been productive before - in the preseason - but he's bounced around the league and is overall an average runner. Shawnbrey McNeal originally started his college career at the University of Miami, but transferred to SMU and in 2009 had a fantastic season. He's an elusive and agile back who can take advantage of a defense when he's working in space or as a receiver out of the backfield. McNeal is instinctive as a runner, but is not as tough between the tackles as he needs to be.

Chargers | M. Mason signed    Mon Mar 8, 10:30 PM

Rick Maese, of The Washington Post, reports the San Diego Chargers have signed free-agent RB Marcus Mason (Redskins). Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Mason racked up yards in the preseason, but never had the same success during the regular season. He will have to work hard to make the final roster, even though San Diego RB corps has been recently depleted.

Redskins | Committee approach to run game to continue    Tue Dec 8, 02:59 PM

Jason Reid, of The Washington Post, reports the Washington Redskins' running-back-by-committee between RBs Rock Cartwright, Quinton Ganther and Marcus Mason will continue after an impressive performance in Week 13. 'I like the way all the running backs are giving effort,' head coach Jim Zorn said. 'It's one of those deals where, by committee, we're doing a pretty good job. I think each guy in his own right is going as hard as he can. I think we're getting better as we go down here. The guys are feeling more and more comfortable getting themselves up the field.'

Footballguys view: Cartwright, Ganther, and Mason are not exciting fantasy options and the Redskins may decide to feature more of the passing game as the season comes to a close.

Jason La Canfora, of the NFL Network, reports the Washington Redskins will re-sign free-agent RB Marcus Mason.

Footballguys view: Mason has been with the Redskins before, and had success as a runner in the preseason. He should split time with Quinton Ganther as the backup to Rock Cartwright while Clinton Portis is out.

Footballguys view: Henry worked out for the team on Monday, but the team decided to go with what they've got behind Clinton Portis. Ladell Betts and Marcus Mason would get the first crack at the starting job if Portis were to miss time with injury.

Redskins | Some RBs will need to make impression to make team    Thu Jun 25, 02:24 PM

Paul Tenorio, of The Washington Post, reports Washington Redskins RBs Anthony Alridge, Dominique Dorsey and Marcus Mason will have to make big impressions during training camp to make the final roster.

Footballguys view: Marcus Mason led the preseason in rushing last year for the Redskins, but couldn't make the final roster and bounced around to a few different teams in 2008. Anthony Alrdige was going to be a fantastic change of pace RB for the Broncos last year before he was lost for the year with an injury. "Quick Six" averaged 10 yards per carry his junior year at Houston and has explosive speed with cat-like quickness. Dominique Dorsey was a star in the CFL on special teams, but is limited as a runner between the tackles. This should be an interesting battle to watch during the preseason and we'd put our money on Anthony Alridge to win the spot.

Redskins | Four facing long odds to make team    Mon Jun 1, 09:59 PM

Ryan O'Halloran, of The Washington Times, reports Washington Redskins RBs Dominique Dorsey, Jonathan Evans, Marcus Mason and FB/TE Eddie Williams face long odds to make the team's 53-man roster.

Footballguys view: Marcus Mason was with the Redskins last year and led the preseason in rushing yards. He was cut when the final roster was set in Washington and bounced around to the Jets and to the Ravens. The 'Skins picked him back up, but it's unlikely that he'll make the team unless there are injuries ahead of him on the depth chart.

Redskins | Mason claimed    Tue Apr 28, 06:12 PM

Jason La Canfora, of The Washington Post, reports the Washington Redskins have claimed RB Marcus Mason (Jets) off waivers, according to a league source.

Footballguys view: Washington is very familiar with Mason as he was the preseason's leading rusher while he played for the Redskins. He didn't make the last round of cuts and was promptly signed by the Ravens. Baltimore decided to let him go, and the Jets picked him up. Recently the Jets also decided to let him go, so his career goes full circle and back to Washington.

Jets | Hodges, Mason waived    Mon Apr 27, 05:21 PM

The New York Jets have announced they have waived P Reggie Hodges and RB Marcus Mason.

Footballguys view: Marcus Mason was the preseason leading rusher in 2008, but has been cut by Washington, Baltimore, and the Jets since then. He may jump on with a team for training camp, but it looks like his playing days may be done.
