Broncos | Drew Lock motivated by John Elway    Tue May 12, 05:46 PM

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock said recently he's motivated by the faith his high-profile general manager, John Elway, has bestowed in him. 'I know there's been a lot of talk about the quarterbacks in Denver,' Lock said. 'You know, Peyton (Manning) was the man there, obviously. We've had some good ones, and up-and-down (QBs) in there, and I didn't want to be that for John. I wanted to be a steady guy for him. I wanted to show everybody that they drafted the right quarterback.'

Footballguys view: The Broncos believe they finally could have the franchise quarterback they've long been searching for. Lock only played in five games last year as a rookie, but he went 4-1 in those contests. This offseason, the team has built around Lock adding big-time weapons like WR Jerry Jeudy and WR K.J. Hamler in the draft. They have also added pieces to the interior of the offensive line to protect him better. We'll see how Lock responds under new OC Pat Shurmur in 2020.

Broncos | Drew Lock talks new Denver offense    Tue May 5, 07:51 PM

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock addressed what he has learned about offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur's system after studying it since the pandemic shutdown began. 'There's definitely more possibilities for us to press the ball downfield, which I definitely think plays into my strengths and the receivers we have on this team,' said Lock Tuesday, May 5. 'We have guys who can fly down the field. It gives me the option of changing a curl route to a go route if we get man (coverage). I think we will press the ball downfield more than we did last year.'

Footballguys view: The Broncos have went 'all in' with Lock as their quarterback. He was 4-1 as a starter last year during his rookie season and the team hopes they (finally) have their franchise quarterback. With all that speed on offense, and with new OC Pat Shurmur, Lock could be an exciting QB2 for Fantasy GMs if he continues to develop.

Broncos | Drew Lock readying for new offense    Fri Apr 3, 12:02 PM

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock is throwing five days a week at a spot near his parents' home in Kansas City, during the coronavirus shutdown and has been studying the team's new offensive playbook while watching recent New York Giants film with new offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur coming aboard.

Footballguys view: Lock should work well in Shurmur's three-vert system. The offense is going to be more aggressive in 2020, and that's good news for Lock and his top target WR Courtland Sutton.

Broncos | Drew Lock reaffirmed as starter    Tue Feb 25, 03:49 PM

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock will be the team's starting quarterback to begin the 2020 season, according to general manager John Elway Tuesday, Feb. 25.

Footballguys view: Elway loves Lock, and the team is rolling forward with them as the potential franchise quarterback. He was 4-1 as the team's starter down the stretch last year and the future is bright for the young passer. Expect the Broncos to spend a lot of resources to put more weapons around him this offseason.

Broncos | New OC eager to work with Drew Lock    Thu Feb 6, 02:59 PM

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock was on the New York Giants' radar during the 2019 draft, and now Broncos offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, the former Giants head coach, says he's eager to pair with Lock. 'I'm very excited about being able to work with Drew Lock,' Shurmur said Thursday, Feb. 6.

Footballguys view: Shurmur is the best thing that could happen to Lock. The veteran offensive coach reiterated several times in his debut press conference on Thursday that he was going to craft a system that fits his talent. Lock is athletic and has a rocket arm, so expect the team to be more vertical with their passing game in 2020.

Broncos | Drew Lock excited over potential    Fri Jan 31, 02:24 PM

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock said Friday, Jan. 31, he is excited about the potential of the team's offense with the hiring of offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur and quarterbacks coach Mike Shula., both formerly with the New York Giants. 'I tried to watch as many New York games [as possible], with Daniel (Jones) being a friend of mine,' Lock said. 'It's pretty explosive. They throw the ball down the field. Daniel did himself some running. I'm excited to be able to scoot around a little bit. We'll see how they morph it to fit our personnel and our style and what they think might be best for our team, but I'm confident that they're going to put together a good plan and be ready to go for us.'

Footballguys view: There's a very small chance John Elway tries to land Tom Brady, but this is most likely Lock's team going forward. Shurmur was a coveted name as an offensive coordinator after the Giants let him go as their head coach. He has served as offensive coordinator under Chip Kelly and Steve Spagnuolo in the past.

Broncos | Week 16 injury report for Denver    Fri Dec 20, 05:30 PM

Denver Broncos DE Adam Gotsis (knee), OT Ja'Wuan James (knee) and OG Ronald Leary (concussion) did not practice all week and have been ruled out for Week 16 versus the Detroit Lions. OG Dalton Risner (illness) did not practice Friday, Dec. 20, and is listed as questionable. DE DeMarcus Walker (ankle), TE Noah Fant (shoulder, illness), DE Dre'Mont Jones (ankle) and NT Kyle Peko (illness) were limited Friday and are also listed as questionable. LB Joseph Jones (back), LB Alexander Johnson (knee), LB Von Miller (knee), S Will Parks (hand), WR Tim Patrick (shoulder), NT Mike Purcell (shoulder, knee), LB Malik Reed (ankle), QB Drew Lock (illness), C Connor McGovern (illness), C Patrick Morris (back), OG Austin Schlottmann (illness) practiced in full Friday and have been removed from the injury report.

Footballguys view: Make sure Fant is active before playing him on Sunday. You'll need to have a hedge from a late or night game to avoid a zero. His shoulder injury seemed to be no big deal, but the addition of illness complicates his outlook.

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock (thumb) on Saturday, Nov. 30, was activated off the Reserve/Injured list. In a corresponding move, QB Brett Rypien was waived.

Footballguys view: Lock is likely to start on Sunday against the Chargers. The team hasn't made that announcement yet, but Lock took 75 percent of the starter's reps in practice this week. The rookie second-round pick has a rocket arm and is quite athletic. We'll see if he can flash the signs that he's the Broncos quarterback of the future over the next five games.

Broncos | Drew Lock looks set for first start    Fri Nov 29, 12:54 PM

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock has been taking the majority of first-team reps in practice this week, and signs point to him to making his first pro start Sunday, Dec. 1, against the Los Angeles Chargers, even though there's been no official announcement from the team.

Footballguys view: Lock is on track to get his first NFL start, although it's not really a negative for the offense after Brandon Allen nosedived last week.

Broncos | No decision on Drew Lock    Mon Nov 25, 06:23 PM

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock (thumb) could be activated from the Reserve/Injured list this week, but the team has not made a final decision, according to head coach Vic Fangio.

Footballguys view: There's no need for the Broncos to continue forward with Brandon Allen. Lock has had two weeks of practice already and this week will make his third. We think they should give him these last five games of the 2019 season to see whether or not they need to select a quarterback with a premium pick in the 2020 NFL draft.

Broncos | Drew Lock not guaranteed to play this year    Sat Nov 23, 04:04 PM

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock's NFL debut date remains undetermined but the team is confident with his progress and 'wouldn't hesitate to play him if they get an opening,' according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network on Saturday, Nov. 23.

Footballguys view: The Broncos have Brandon Allen as their current starter but Lock is considered to be a potential quarterback of the future while Allen is seen more as a spot starter. When the Broncos get to eight losses (they have seven losses now), we could see them change their tune about whether or not Lock is going to play as a rookie. We think it's best for them to get him out there ASAP and determine whether or not they need to go back to the well at quarterback in the 2020 NFL draft.

Broncos | Drew Lock returns to practice    Tue Nov 12, 06:59 PM

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock (thumb) returned to practice Tuesday, Nov. 12. A decision will need to be made by Dec. 3 to activate him from injured reserve. CB Bryce Callahan (foot) also returned to practice Tuesday. He has remained on the 53-man roster.

Footballguys view: Lock was supposed to be the quarterback of the future for the Broncos, but a thumb injury suffered in the preseason has had him sidelined on Injured Reserve. The Broncos have a 21-day window now to decide whether or not to make Lock one of their two 'designated to return' players.

Broncos | Drew Lock set to return    Mon Nov 11, 03:47 PM

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock (thumb) is expected to return to practice at some point this week after spending his entire rookie season up to this point on the Reserve/Injured list.

Footballguys view: Lock hasn't been seen on the field since injuring his thumb in mid-August. He could be the quarterback of the future, but the Broncos aren't going to put him in there as the starter if he's not ready. Lock has to show 'he belongs' with 'quality quarterback play' according to Broncos head coach Vic Fangio. The Broncos now have 21 days to decide whether or not to activate Lock from the Injured Reserve list or shut him down for the entirety of his rookie season.

Broncos | Drew Lock update    Thu Oct 31, 02:06 AM

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock (thumb) is slated to return to practice in Week 11 in the lead up to the team's Nov. 17 game against the Minnesota Vikings, according to general manager John Elway.

Footballguys view: The team wants to see if Lock can improve reading the middle of the field. The rookie has raw mechanics but the athleticism and strong arm are there to make him an intriguing prospect. Elway added that the decision whether or not to reinstate Lock from IR would come down to how well he's 'mentally adapting' to the offense. Brandon Allen starts for the Broncos in Week 9 with undrafted rookie Brett Rypien backing him up.

Broncos | Drew Lock not close to seeing action    Wed Oct 23, 11:04 PM

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock (thumb) is the future, but general manager John Elway said Wednesday, Oct. 23 in a radio interview that the rookie is nowhere near ready to return to action after spending all season on the Reserve/Injured list due to a sprained right thumb. 'The most important thing with a young quarterback is not to put him out there before he's ready,' Elway said. 'If you don't put him in a situation where he has a chance to be successful and he's not successful, the whole roof will cave in.'

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock (thumb) threw on the field for the first time in over a month prior to the team's Week 5 game and no longer needs to wear a brace on the right thumb he sprained in late August.

Footballguys view: Lock can resume practicing this week. If the team wants, they can designate him to return off Injured Reserve in Week 9. The Broncos only have one win this year and could be turning to look at the future if they don't put together a few more wins before Lock is available.

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock (thumb), RB Theo Riddick (shoulder) and TE Jake Butt (knee) were officially placed on the Reserve/Injured list Monday, Sept. 2.

Footballguys view: Lock is the 2019 second-round pick who could be the future franchise quarterback of the Broncos. Riddick could be the team's leading pass-catching back when healthy. Butt has only played in three games during his two seasons with the Broncos and is still dealing with the knee injury that cost him most of the 2018 season.

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock (thumb) was diagnosed with a badly sprained right thumb Tuesday, Aug. 20. Although he is out indefinitely, he will not require surgery, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Lock thought it was a mild sprain but it turns out to be a little more serious. This changes the Broncos pecking order at quarterback. Kevin Hogan is now more likely to make the 53-man roster as the backup to Joe Flacco. When Lock is healthy, he should take over that spot.

Broncos | Kevin Hogan still in the mix for QB2    Sat Aug 17, 02:40 AM

Denver Broncos QB Kevin Hogan is 'absolutely' still in competition for the backup job with QB Drew Lock, according to offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello; Lock has received the majority of the second-team reps during practice this past week.

Footballguys view: That's what the team has to say at this point but Drew Lock is taking over. We've seen an increase in Lock's snaps with the second-team offense over the last week or so. If Lock continues to progress, he could open the season as the primary backup to Joe Flacco.

Broncos | Drew Lock works as backup    Sun Aug 11, 10:14 PM

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock took all the reps with the second-team offense during practice Sunday, Aug. 11.

Footballguys view: Lock is the future of the Broncos at the position. He's been getting slowly worked into the second-team offense and the team must feel like he's ready for more. Lock is athletic and has a big arm but his footwork needs to be cleaned up before he's ready to start. So long as Joe Flacco is healthy, Lock won't play for the Broncos in 2019.

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock completed seven of his 11 pass attempts for 34 yards and rushed once for six yards in a 14-10 preseason win over the Atlanta Falcons Thursday, Aug. 1.

Footballguys view: Lock looked overwhelmed in the Hall of Fame game, which should tell you how far he is from being ready to start in the NFL.

Broncos | Drew Lock the clear backup?    Fri Jul 19, 09:12 PM

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock has 'clearly' been the best passer behind QB Joe Flacco, according to Benjamin Allbright of 104.7 FM Denver, and Allbright believes head coach Vic Fangio's comments about Lock being a work in progress were simply a motivational tactic for the rookie.

Footballguys view: Lock is not even ahead of Kevin Hogan in the pecking order...yet. Hogan is struggling mightily at training camp, while Lock has been up and down. We should see Lock win the backup job later in the preseason.

Broncos | Drew Lock a work in progress    Fri Jul 19, 01:54 PM

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock is a 'hard-throwing pitcher who doesn't know how to pitch yet,' head coach Vic Fangio said Friday, July 19.

Footballguys view: That sounds about right. Lock is not a finished product and he's not close to pushing Joe Flacco for the starting job. In fact, he's not above Kevin Hogan (yet) on the Broncos depth chart. The rookie is a hard worker and has a big arm but his footwork, release point and pass placement are poor at times. We'll see how Lock develops in 2019, likely as the backup to Flacco.

Denver Broncos second-round draft choice QB Drew Lock agreed to terms with the Broncos on a four-year contract Wednesday, July 17, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Lock had wanted a quarterback premium, even though he fell to the second round of the 2019 NFL draft. He's got a big arm but his footwork and arm mechanics need work. Lock is known as a hard worker and a good student of the game. We'll see if he can develop behind Joe Flacco in 2019. Lock could be the Broncos QB of the future.

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock may or may not be signed and in training camp when it opens Thursday, July 18. Team president John Elway said: 'We'll see,' when asked about the possibility.

Footballguys view: Lock, a second-round pick in 2019, is set to be the quarterback of the future and develop behind Joe Flacco this season. He's yet to sign and the only rookie that is not under contract with the Broncos. Lock wants a quarterback premium and we feel the two sides will come to an agreement in the near future.
