Seahawks | Geno Smith uncertain for Thanksgiving night    Mon Nov 20, 10:36 AM

Updating earlier reports, Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll indicated that QB Geno Smith (elbow) was uncertain to play on Thursday, Nov. 23, against the San Francisco 49ers. Carroll said he had 'no idea' as to Smith's availability, and the quarterback said simply, 'We'll see how it goes.' If Smith can't play, QB Drew Lock would make the start.

Footballguys view: In a short week, Seattle may have to turn to Drew Lock. Information may be limited before the Thanksgiving game, so make sure to have other options at the ready. Lock is an intriguing prospect, but if Smith was out there would likely be at least a slight downgrade for the weapons in the passing game.

Buccaneers | TB had interest in Drew Lock    Sat Oct 14, 08:44 AM

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had expressed interest in signing free-agent QB Drew Lock during the offseason, before he ultimately re-signed with the Seattle Seahawks, according to general manager Jason Licht.

Footballguys view: This was known during the offseason. Instead of adding Lock, the Buccaneers went with Baker Mayfield. In four games this year, Mayfield has 882 passing yards, seven touchdowns, and two interceptions. Lock has seen a little bit of playing time behind Geno Smith this year. Like Smith a couple of years ago, Lock is looking for his next opportunity and staying patient.

Seahawks | Drew Lock plays well in preseason opener    Fri Aug 11, 01:43 AM

Seattle Seahawks QB Drew Lock completed 17 of 24 passes for 191 yards, 2 TDs, and 1 INT in the team's win over the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday, Aug. 10.

Footballguys view: Lock got the start and led the team back to victory from a 10-point deficit. His one interception was tipped - but still not a great decision - but otherwise Lock looked like he was in command, showing off his arm strength and ability to move in the pocket. The Seahawks are in good shape at backup quarterback compared to most teams.

Seahawks | Drew Lock could return    Wed Jan 25, 07:27 PM

Seattle Seahawks impending free-agent QB Drew Lock is a player the Seahawks are interested in re-signing this offseason, according to general manager John Schneider.

Footballguys view: Lock, a former starter in Denver, was part of the trade that shipped Russell Wilson off to the Broncos. He competed with Geno Smith in training camp, but Lock did not win the job. Lock worked as the primary backup to Smith in 2022, but the Seahawks may add another quarterback to the room with the no.5 pick in the 2023 NFL draft. Perhaps he'll take his chances in free agency and try to find a spot where he can compete to be a starter again.

Seahawks | Geno Smith named Week 1 starter    Sat Aug 27, 12:06 AM

Seattle Seahawks QB Geno Smith will get the start over Drew Lock in Week 1 against the Denver Broncos, according to head coach Pete Carroll.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. Lock played most of the preseason finale against the Cowboys and threw three interceptions. Seattle wants to win with defense and running the ball, so that means the quarterback must take care of the ball. Smith will do that, and Lock clearly has a problem doing that. It's no matter as neither option is great, and both quarterbacks should start this season. We expect the Seahawks to flounder this year and then find their quarterback of the future in next year's draft.

Seahawks | Geno Smith to start finale    Wed Aug 24, 12:40 PM

Seattle Seahawks QB Geno Smith will start the team's preseason finale on Friday, Aug. 26, but QB Drew Lock will see significant snaps in the contest, head coach Pete Carroll said on Wednesday, Aug. 24.

Footballguys view: Carroll also noted that Smith starting in the final preseason game does not mean he won the starting job. Ah yes, when you have two quarterbacks you really have none...and Seattle is learning that painful lesson this year. They chose Carroll over QB Russell Wilson, so they will roll with substandard quarterback play in 2022. With a load of draft picks, expect the Seahawks to be after the best quarterback in the 2023 NFL draft.

Seahawks | SEA QB decision not imminent    Wed Aug 24, 09:22 AM

Seattle Seahawks QB Geno Smith and QB Drew Lock will continue battling for the starting spot as head coach Pete Carroll said the team will take all the time it needs to make a decision.

Footballguys view: Fantasy GMs are shaking their heads at this situation. Neither quarterback is a great option, and both of these passers will negatively impact the potential production from WRs D.K. Metcalf and Tyler Lockett. Carroll said Smith remains ahead but that he's 'wide open' to the possibility that Lock could overtake him.

Seahawks | Drew Lock back at practice    Sun Aug 21, 04:33 PM

Seattle Seahawks QB Drew Lock (illness) returned to practice on Sunday, Aug. 21, after recovering from COVID-19.

Footballguys view: Lock came down with COVID and had to spend time away from the facility. He was set to start the Seahawks' second preseason game before falling ill. Perhaps he'll get the nod for the preseason finale as Lock continues to compete with Geno Smith for the starting job.

Seahawks | Drew Lock to miss preseason game    Tue Aug 16, 08:23 PM

Seattle Seahawks QB Drew Lock (illness) has tested positive for COVID-19 and has been ruled out for the second preseason game.

Footballguys view: Lock has been running with the first-team offense, but he continues to battle against Geno Smith for the starting job. Smith seems to have the upper hand, but the battle is close and neither is really a great option. Just for the story of it, we'd love to see Lock play against his old teammates in Week 1 as Seattle is at home to play against the Denver Broncos.

Seattle Seahawks QB Drew Lock completed 11 of his 15 passes for 102 yards and two touchdowns in a 32-25 preseason loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers Saturday, Aug. 13. He also lost a fumble.

Footballguys view: Lock was slightly more productive than Geno Smith, but he played against the Steelers backups with the second team Seattle offense. If this is going to be a real competition, we need to see Lock with the starters before the end of the preseason.

Seahawks | Geno Smith still the favorite to start    Sat Aug 6, 10:07 AM

Seattle Seahawks QB Geno Smith continues to be the frontrunner in the team's starting quarterback competition over QB Drew Lock, according to head coach Pete Carroll. Smith has received the majority of the reps with the first-team offense in practice, with Lock seeing most of the snaps with the second-team offense.

Footballguys view: The battle between Smith and Lock is like choosing between airline food and hospital food. Both will get the job done, but neither has you really excited. Don't be surprised if both quarterbacks start a handful of games this season. The quarterback of the future is not currently on the roster, and the Seahawks should suffer through a tough season - get a great pick - then draft their potential franchise quarterback in 2023.

Seahawks | Unlikely to Trade for QB Darnold    Sat Jul 9, 12:25 PM

Michael Bumpus, from Seattle Sports 710 AM, reports the Seattle Seahawks are unlikely to trade the Carolina Panthers for QB Sam Darnold.

Footballguys view: The Seahawks were rumored to be interested in QB Baker Mayfield, but the Panthers beat them to the punch and traded for him earlier this month. Now, the Panthers have Darnold as a high-priced backup and seem intent on having a quarterback competition in training camp. Seattle currently has Geno Smith as their top passer, but Drew Lock should get a chance to prove he should be the starter in training camp and the preseason.

Seahawks | K.J. Wright endorses Geno Smith    Wed Jun 29, 01:05 PM

Seattle Seahawks QB Geno Smith got an endorsement for the starting job from former teammate and free-agent LB K.J. Wright. 'I'll tell you not Baker Mayfield,' Wright said. 'Not Drew Lock. We ain't gonna play those games. I'm team Geno all day.' Wright went on to explain why Smith is his choice. 'Geno was good.. He was scout team quarterback. The dude has a cannon for an arm. He's intellectual, you know, having those two-minute drills during practice throughout the week, the man can play. Just trust him, just trust Geno.'

Footballguys view: Wright knows Smith's game, and there are plenty of players who feel he deserves a shot as the starter. Lock came over in part of the deal with the Broncos for QB Russell Wilson, but there were rumblings that he was a throw in that Seattle didn't necessarily want. No matter if that's true or not, Lock is there to push Smith for the starting job...and neither one is a great starting option for Seattle in 2022.

Seahawks | Geno Smith the frontrunner     Thu Jun 9, 09:46 PM

Seattle Seahawks QB Geno Smith remains ahead of QB Drew Lock in the competition for the starting quarterback job, head coach Pete Carroll said Thursday, June 9.

Footballguys view: The Seahawks seem to want to get excited about Lock, who they got in the Russell Wilson trade, but Smith has more experience, including with the Seahawks, and the team was competitive with him at quarterback last year. DK Metcalf was also more than serviceable with Smith on the field, so Smith winning this job would be good news for him - if he doesn't hold out for a new deal.

Browns | No Plans to Cut QB Mayfield    Sun May 29, 12:17 PM

Mary Kay Cabot, from the Cleveland Plain Dealer, reports the Cleveland Browns have no plans to cut QB Baker Mayfield. Cabot writes "if the Panthers and Seahawks are waiting for the Browns to cut Baker Mayfield so they can get him on the cheap, they better not hold their breath."

Footballguys view: Seattle and Carolina could use Mayfield, but they want the price tag to come down to acquire Mayfield. If the Browns were to pick up part of his salary - maybe even most of his salary - then those two teams would bite. At this time, we have a staring contest between teams who could use Mayfield and the team that doesn't want Mayfield anymore after trading for QB Deshaun Watson. When mandatory minicamp rolls around Mayfield would be fined around $95,000 if he missed all three days. However, reports suggest Mayfield could work out at the facility but not with Watson or his backup QB Jacoby Brissett. Stay tuned.

Seahawks | Geno Smith has slight lead for QB job    Thu May 19, 07:15 PM

Seattle Seahawks QB Geno Smith has a small advantage over QB Drew Lock for the starting quarterback job at this point since he is more familiar with the offense, according to offensive coordinator Shane Waldron.

Footballguys view: Nobody should be surprised by this. Lock was never really that good with the Broncos, and he's learning a new offense - again. He struggled to pick up Rich Scangarello's system as a rookie and was spoon fed plays by the former Broncos OC in his headset. Under Pat Shurmur, Lock had no better success when it came to picking up the offense - and that was a system stuck in the 90s. We'll see if Lock can look better than Smith in training camp and the preseason.

Seahawks | Drew Lock gets glowing review    Sat May 7, 02:22 PM

Seattle Seahawks QB Drew Lock received a glowing review from head coach Pete Carroll. 'The first look at Drew, he's really athletic, he's really a confident athlete, you can see he's got a lot of body control, he's got quick feet, he's got a quick arm, he's got various ways he can release the football as his body's in different positions,' Carroll said. 'He's got a real knack there. He's got a strong arm, he can throw the ball a mile down the field. He compares to Geno, and Geno Smith has a great arm. He has a world-class arm, and all that. To match up with that, that's saying a lot.' Carroll also believes Lock would have been the first quarterback off the board if he were in the 2022 NFL draft class.

Footballguys view: Seattle passed on quarterback throughout the notable portion of the 2022 NFL Draft, which is a shot in the arm for Drew Lock's odds to be the Week 1 starter. Lock's arm talent is not the issue, but improving on his decision-making and accuracy will be the key watchwords for Lock. Geno Smith is a worthy Superflex stash as Seattle is one of the shakiest quarterback depth charts in the NFL.

Drew Lock or Geno Smith will be Seahawks starter in 2022, per Pete Carroll    Fri May 6, 12:17 PM

When asked about the Seahawks quarterback situation in the wake of the Russell Wilson trade, Seahawks' head coach Pete Carroll said "I don't see us making a trade for anybody at all. I don't see that happening. But we're certainly going to continue to be open to chances to help our club, and meanwhile we're just going to be battling and competing our tails off."

Footballguys view: Carroll has a reputation for misleading quotes, so take this with a grain of salt. With Baker Mayfield, Jimmy Garoppolo, and other veteran quarterbacks on the market, there have been rumors that the Seahawks may make a move to improve the quarterback room. They neglected the position in the Draft but Carroll seems content letting Lock and Smith battle it out in camp. With D.K. Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, Rashaad Penny, and newly-acquired Noah Fant and Kenneth Walker III on the team, Seattle's quarterback will be surrounded by high-level talent. Smith had an impressive 4:0 TD:INT ratio in his three starts last year but topped out at a measly 209 passing yards in a game. Lock has a penchant for gunslinging deep balls and his athleticism could make him an appealing option for Seattle. Keep an eye on this battle throughout camp, but keep expectations low for everyone in this passing game. DK Metcalf did catch four touchdowns from Smith in four games last year, so he might be able to emerge unscathed from a fantasy standpoint if Smith wins the job.

Seahawks | Russell Wilson shipped to Denver in huge deal    Tue Mar 8, 02:27 PM

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson will reportedly be traded to the Denver Broncos along with a fourth-round pick in exchange for two first-round picks, two second-round picks, a fifth-round pick, QB Drew Lock and two other players Tuesday, March 8, according to FOX Sports' Jay Glazer. One of the other two players in the deal is expected to be DT Shelby Harris. The two teams have agreed to terms of the trade, but the trade is pending a physical and Wilson's approval.

Footballguys view: This is a blow to Seattle players like WRs D.K. Metcalf and Tyler Lockett. Lock has starting experience but he hasn't looked good outside of one or two games during his three year career. We'll see the Seahawks rebuild and likely have some form of QB competition in 2022.

Broncos | Denver nabs Russell Wilson in blockbuster trade    Tue Mar 8, 02:11 PM

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson will reportedly be traded to the Denver Broncos along with a fourth-round pick in exchange for two first-round picks, two second-round picks, a fifth-round pick, QB Drew Lock and two other players Tuesday, March 8, according to FOX Sports' Jay Glazer. One of the other two players in the deal is expected to be DT Shelby Harris. The two teams have agreed to terms of the trade, but the trade is pending a physical and Wilson's approval.

Footballguys view: What an incredible haul for the Seahawks, but the Broncos had to get a franchise quarterback to compete...especially in an AFC West with Patrick Mahomes and Justin Herbert. Wilson gives the Broncos a franchise quarterback, and the first one they've had since Peyton Manning retired after winning Super Bowl 50. With their roster, the Broncos can compete for the playoffs immediately with Wilson leading the way. This bumps up the fantasy value for RB Javonte Williams, WRs Courtland Sutton, Jerry Jeudy, Tim Patrick and TE Albert Okwuegbunam.

Broncos | OC wants to see Drew Lock in new scheme    Tue Feb 22, 07:58 PM

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock has done some good things in the NFL, but offensive coordinator Justin Outten said he wants to see Lock in the team's new offensive scheme before making any decisions on him.

Footballguys view: Ah yes, the Lock conversation continues in Denver because they haven't figured out their quarterback position. Entering his fourth season, Lock has had plenty of time to start and show improvement. He's perhaps gotten more of a chance than most second-round quarterbacks would get based on his poor play. There are some flashes here and there, but they are brief and inconsistent. Lock is too inaccurate and too turnover prone to be a solid starter in this league. Perhaps the new system helps, or perhaps a chance of scenery would be best.

Broncos | Week 18 game recap for Denver    Sat Jan 8, 08:11 PM

Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock completed 12-of-24 throws for 162 yards without a touchdown Saturday, Jan. 8, vs. the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 18. He didn't turn over the ball and rushed for two scores on four carries for 35 yards. RB Melvin Gordon, who lost a scoop-and-score fumble, ran 12 times for 110 yards and a touchdown, chipping in a six-yard grab on his lone reception. RB Javonte Williams carried the ball 12 times for 46 yards and caught both of his targets for 16 yards. WR Tim Patrick led the team with six catches for 95 yards. WR Jerry Jeudy finished with two catches for 30 yards on five targets, and WR Courtland Sutton caught one of his three targets for 13 yards. Sutton also threw a 16-yard pass. TE Noah Fant was held to a 16-yard catch on his only reception (two targets). CB Michael Ojemudia paced the defense with 11 tackles (eight solo) and tallied two passes defensed.

Footballguys view: Gordon looked fresh and gave potential free agent suitors something to think about, while Patrick showed why he got an extension at a starter salary during the season. The Broncos will go into next season with a new coach, offensive coordinator, and maybe a new quarterback.
