Chargers | Have not expressed interest in Garrett Wolfe    Sat Mar 17, 09:47 PM

The San Diego Chargers have not expressed an interest in free-agent RB Garrett Wolfe (Bears).

Footballguys view: It's interesting to think they wouldn't have at least a passing interest in Wolfe. He's a smaller back from Northern Illinois (where Michael Turner came from) and is built a lot like Darren Sproles.

Bears | Felony charges not filed against Garrett Wolfe    Wed Jun 22, 11:44 AM

Chicago Bears impending free-agent RB Garrett Wolfe will not be facing felony charges stemming from an arrest last month for allegedly refusing to pay a bar tab because authorities have decided not to file any felony charges. Wolfe faces a level-one misdemeanor for resisting arrest without violence.

Footballguys view: Good news for Wolfe here, but he's still going to face an uphill battle of finding a new team this year.

Bears | Garrett Wolfe not in plans    Mon Jun 6, 12:55 PM

Chicago Bears impending free-agent RB Garrett Wolfe is not in the team's plans after he was arrested earlier this offseason. Wolfe was not seen as a priority even before the arrest.

Footballguys view: Wolfe is a diminutive RB who plays like a destitute man's version of Darren Sproles. He'll end up on a roster somewhere but we're not expecting much from him this year.

Bears | UDFA RB Chad Spann a good fit?    Fri Jun 3, 03:12 PM

Cecil Lammey, NFL Insider for FRSN and senior writer for Footballguys.com, reports via Twitter that according to sources he's talked to the Bears could be interested in bringing in free agent RBs to compete for roster spots in training camp. Lammey believes undrafted free agent Chad Spann would make a great fit for the team as reserve back with good upside. He noted Spann's similar skill set to Priest Holmes and how good that fits a Mike Martz system.

Footballguys view: Garrett Wolfe is not likely to be back and the team needs to improve the RB depth behind Matt Forte and Chester Taylor. Spann is a strong runner with good instincts, footwork, and leg drive. He has high football intelligence and is adept at running through trash at the line of scrimmage. Even though he went undrafted in the 2011 NFL Draft we like his upside in deep dynasty leagues.

Bears | Two competing for No. 3 RB job    Wed Aug 25, 03:19 PM

Chicago Bears RBs Garrett Wolfe and Kahlil Bell are competing for the No. 3 running back job, according to Vaughn McClure, of the Chicago Tribune.

Footballguys view: Wolfe is the diminutive runner who reminds some of a poor man's Darren Sproles because of his lack of size and running style. Bell is a smooth runner who sees the field well, and may be a better all-around back. Whoever wins the job is unlikely to see much playing time if both Matt Forte and Chester Taylor stay healthy.

Bears | RB Unga signed, two released    Wed Jul 21, 12:15 PM

Adam Schefter, from ESPN, reports via Twitter that the Chicago Bears have signed RB Harvey Unga, and released DT Jimmy Saddler-McQueen and WR Vic Hall. Unga was selected in the seventh-round of the recent supplemental draft.

Footballguys view: Unga will battle with Khalil Bell and Garrett Wolfe to be the Bears third-string back behind Matt Forte and Chester Taylor. He's a proven receiver out of the backfield, but plays more like a pass catching fullback than a feature running back in our eyes. If Taylor and Forte stay healthy there's little chance of Unga doing much on the field this year.

Bears | Harvey Unga brings versatility    Thu Jul 15, 04:52 PM

Chicago Bears rookie RB Harvey Unga has the potential to be used in single-back formations, and also could be considered at fullback, reports Dan Pompei, of ChicagoBreakingSports.com. Unga can contribute as a pass receiver and protector, and is also considered a power back. He will compete with RBs Kahlil Bell and Garrett Wolfe for a roster spot during training camp.

Footballguys view: Unga does not have the quick initial burst or change of direction skills to be anything more than a short-yardage back. He is a proven receiver out of the backfield, and could be a pass catching fullback for the Bears.

Bears | Garrett Wolfe and Kahlil Bell to compete for No. 3 role    Sun Jul 11, 12:49 PM

Chicago Bears RBs Garrett Wolfe and Kahlil Bell will be fighting for the team's third tailback duties during training camp, according to running backs coach Tim Spencer on ChicagoBears.com. 'They are obviously different backs. Kahlil is more of an inside runner ... Garrett is more of a scat back,' Spencer said.

Footballguys view: Neither back has done much to distinguish themselves, but Wolfe is a better special teams contributor, and he also seems to be a better fit in the Martz offense, so we favor him in this battle.

Bears | Content with backs behind Forte    Sat Sep 5, 06:02 PM

Brad Biggs, of The Chicago Sun-Times, reports the Chicago Bears appear content moving forward with RBs Adrian N. Peterson and Garrett Wolfe behind starter Matt Forte. RB Kevin Jones (ankle) was expected to see a larger role this year, but now that he is out for the year Forte may not come off the field much. He played in 84 percent of the team's snaps last year.

Footballguys view: Forte's value is already high, and now with the injury to Kevin Jones it has climbed even higher. The Bears may be content with the backs behind Forte, but they are watching the waiver wire closely today. They would be wise to sign a player like Darius Walker, who the Broncos let go today. Adrian N. Peterson doesn't run with much authority, and is an overall below average player. Garrett Wolfe is small, but he's no Darren Sproles. Wolfe can rack up some yardage when he's in space, but goes down too easily, and can't run through arm tackles.

Bears | Wolfe working on improving    Tue Jul 7, 11:36 PM

Larry Mayer, of ChicagoBears.com, reports Chicago Bears RBs coach Tim Spencer said RB Garrett Wolfe has worked hard on improving his game. Wolfe, who also plays special teams, can do pretty much anything for the Bears, according to Spencer. Spencer said Wolfe is capable of carrying the football 20 times a game for the team, but it's unlikely that will happen. 'He's going to have his work cut out for him, but we've definitely got to get him on the field also,' Spender said.

Footballguys view: Spencer's praise is generous - Wolfe might be able to physically hold up if he got 20 carries in a game, but we haven't seen evidence that he would do much with those carries. He lacks the sudden quickness and speed that has made smaller RBs like Darren Sproles and Leon Washington into NFL success stories.

Bears | Peterson, Wolfe to compete for No. 3 job    Tue Jul 7, 04:38 PM

Brad Biggs, of the Chicago Sun-Times, reports Chicago Bears RB Adrian N. Peterson and RB Garrett Wolfe will compete for the No. 3 running back job during training camp.

Footballguys view: Biggs speculates that one of them might not make the roster when all is said and done. Wolfe is the small change of pace back from Northern Illinois and a standout on special teams. Adrian Peterson "the other Peterson" is from Georgia Southern and has provided good depth for the Bears the last few seasons. Peterson is not very creative with the ball in his hands as a runner or receiver. Wolfe is good with the ball in space, but is too easily arm tackled and consistently gets swallowed up by the defense. The Bears have a good RB tandem with Matt Forte and Kevin Jones, but they would be in trouble if either (especially Forte) were to go down with injury.
