Lions | Thornton turns down offer    Mon Jul 13, 08:46 AM

John Niyo, of the Detroit News, reports free-agent DL John Thornton (Bengals) said during an interview with Sirius NFL Radio he recently turned down an offer from the Detroit Lions. Thornton is now unsure if he will play anywhere in 2009. 'I would probably have to gain weight,' Thornton said. 'That was the situation with Detroit (and) Coach Schwartz, who coached me in Tennessee. I went up there and we kind of agreed to a deal and a few days later I sort of backed out of it for various reasons. I would have had to gain about 20 pounds actually. He wanted me to be pretty big in the middle, so I would just have to start eating a lot. I'm in pretty good shape.'

Footballguys view: Thornton was a starter for the Bengals the last six years, but was let go when the team signed Tank Johnson. Many expected him to be re-united with coach Schwartz in Detroit, but now it looks like he may not play anywhere in 2009.
