Dolphins | Miami adds Bryce Petty    Fri May 4, 04:50 PM

The Miami Dolphins claimed QB Bryce Petty off waivers from the New York Jets Friday, May 4, according to a source.

New York Jets QB Bryce Petty is being released Thursday, May 3, according to a source.

Footballguys view: No great shock, and likely the first of two moves, with Christian Hackenberg getting his walking papers soon too. It could also be a sign that Teddy Bridgewater has come along and is mended or close to it.

New York Jets QB Josh McCown (back) was taken to the locker room in the third quarter of the Week 14 game against the Denver Broncos. QB Bryce Petty replaced him.

Jets | Bryce Petty could play this week    Tue Aug 29, 04:17 PM

New York Jets QB Bryce Petty (knee) may be available to play in Week 4 of the preseason, according to head coach Todd Bowles.

Footballguys view: Petty is competing to be the backup behind starter Josh McCown. His main competition is Christian Hackenberg...so Petty should win that job.

Jets | Bryce Petty exhibiting improvement    Tue Aug 29, 12:01 AM

New York Jets QB Bryce Petty has made 'legit improvement' with his play in training camp this summer, according to head coach Todd Bowles.

Footballguys view: It's improvement if bottom of the barrel was the starting point. Petty isn't as bad as Christian Hackenberg, but that's not saying much. Josh McCown is this team's starter, but we may see Petty at some point if/when McCown struggles.

Jets | Bryce Petty limited Monday    Mon Aug 28, 06:39 PM

New York Jets QB Bryce Petty (knee) was limited to individual drills during practice Monday, Aug. 28. He still hopes to play in the final preseason game.

Footballguys view: Petty is hoping to be the Jets second-string quarterback as Josh McCown has already been named the starter. Petty's main competition is 2016 second-round pick Christian Hackenberg and he's played poorly this camp and preseason. If healthy, we expect Petty to be the no2 quarterback for the Jets.

Updating a previous report, New York Jets QB Bryce Petty (knee) will undergo an MRI exam on his injured left knee Sunday, Aug. 27, according to head coach Todd Bowles.

Footballguys view: Petty's season isn't over, but he has an MCL injury that could cost him 4-6 weeks or more. Josh McCown is probably the Week 1 starter against the Bills. Petty was on the same page with Robby Anderson last year, so this is a hit to his early outlook.

Jets | Quarterbacks splitting first-team reps for Jets    Thu Aug 24, 05:53 PM

New York Jets QBs Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty split first-team repetitions during practice this week. A started has not officially been named yet for the regular season.

Footballguys view: The team keeps saying Josh McCown is the starter (well, Head coach Todd Bowles at least) but he's not getting reps which means he is unlikely to play against the Giants. Which means.... the Jets still have no clue what they are doing. Maybe trying to remove all doubt Hackenberg is a bust. Avoid the passing offense of this team at all costs.

Jets | Christian Hackenberg making a move?    Fri Jun 16, 03:39 PM

New York Jets QB Christian Hackenberg performed a 'little better than expected' in minicamp, and QB Josh McCown does not have an 'insurmountable lead' over him in the race to start Week 1. QB Bryce Petty is running third on the depth chart.

Footballguys view: There's nowhere to go but up for Hackenberg. Earlier camp reports indicate he's been terrible but now perhaps a little better than terrible. It doesn't matter for fantasy owners as we anticipate little production from the Jets passing game no matter who is the quarterback.

Jets | No favorite among Jets quarterbacks    Thu Jun 15, 07:18 PM

New York Jets QBs Josh McCown, Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty are in a genuine quarterback competition, according to head coach Todd Bowles.

Jets | Josh McCown has advantage in QB competition    Sun Jun 4, 04:12 PM

New York Jets QB Josh McCown has an advantage over QBs Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty in the competition for the starting quarterback job because he is familiar with the West Coast offense, according to head coach Todd Bowles. Bowles also said he expects Hackenberg to play at some point.

Footballguys view: His advantage is not only experience, but also because the other two aren't really good. Hackenberg was a second-round pick last year but he was so bad the team didn't turn to him as a rookie. We'll see if that's different this year. Petty is your run-of-the-mill backup quarterback...at best. This situation is one of the worst at the position in the entire league. Don't look for fantasy value from the Jets QBs no matter who wins the job.

Jets | Josh McCown expected to be Week 1 starter    Sat May 27, 12:43 PM

New York Jets QB Josh McCown is the 'heavy favorite' to be named the starting quarterback even though the team plans on having an open competition, giving McCown, Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg an equal amount of practice reps, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini.

Footballguys view: That's the way it should shake out, but with the Jets you just never know. Hackenberg has been impressive at Jets camp according to reports, but given what he looked like last year we have to take that with a grain (block?) of salt. Fantasy owners should watch this play out in training camp and publicly shame anyone in their league that adds one of these QBs to their roster. No matter who wins the job, only QB3 value should come from it.

Jets | Equal opportunity for Jets' quarterbacks    Tue May 23, 03:56 PM

New York Jets QBs Josh McCown, Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg will be given equal first-team repetitions during organized team activities, according to offensive coordinator John Morton.

Footballguys view: McCown has the advantage from his playing experience, and he may win the job because of it. No matter who is the starting QB for the Jets, there is no fantasy value to be mined here.

Jets | Bryce Petty ready to compete    Wed May 17, 03:19 PM

New York Jets QB Bryce Petty said he is ready to compete with QBs Josh McCown and Christian Hackenberg for the starting quarterback job and believes he can win the job.

Footballguys view: Petty's Madden Ultimate Team has over a 90 rating, and he just got the 99 OVR Tom Brady Cover Reveal card (just look it up on MUTHead.com). The guy who said he can get better playing football by playing Madden has a chance to win the starting job in 2017. Yes, that's the sad state of the Jets QB situation. Don't look for fantasy gold with this team at this position. No matter who wins the starting job, we won't be recommending them as anything more than a "you forgot to take your backup QB and now they're all gone" addition.

Jets | Bryce Petty at full strength    Mon May 15, 12:45 PM

New York Jets QB Bryce Petty (shoulder) said his surgically repaired left shoulder is at full strength, and he has been cleared to participate in organized team activities.

Footballguys view: Petty is competing with Josh McCown and Christian Hackenberg to be the starting quarterback. Appearing in six games last year, Petty had only three touchdowns with seven interceptions. Unless he's made serious changes to his game, we don't see Petty beating out the veteran McCown for the top spot on the depth chart. Fantasy owners shouldn't be looking to this team for quarterback help.

Jets | Josh McCown expects competition    Wed May 3, 04:25 PM

New York Jets QB Josh McCown said he expects to compete with QBs Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty for the starting quarterback job.

Footballguys view: McCown has much more experience than the other two quarterbacks, but the veteran knows he must prove himself on the practice field if he wants the starting job. We're expecting the Jets to make more than one quarterback change regardless of who begins the season as the starter. They need to see what they have in Hackenberg, who failed to see the field last year as a rookie even though they selected him with a second-round pick.

Jets | New York will have QB competition    Tue May 2, 07:56 PM

New York Jets QBs Josh McCown, Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty will compete for the starting quarterback position this offseason, according to head coach Todd Bowles.

Footballguys view: Don't hold your breath here looking for fantasy value. McCown should have the leg up in this competition as he's the most experienced, but with the Jets you just never know how things are going to shake out. No matter who wins the job, fantasy owners will be looking elsewhere for help.

Jets | Bryce Petty may be on bubble    Sat Apr 15, 02:39 PM

New York Jets QB Bryce Petty could be released if the team selects a quarterback in one of the first three rounds of the 2017 NFL Draft, in the opinion of the New York Daily News' Manish Mehta.

Footballguys view: The Jets don't have a clue when it comes to quarterbacks. They drafted Petty two years ago and then they drafted Christian Hackenberg in the second round last year. Neither one is a viable starting option in 2017...and this isn't a great quarterback class in the draft. Good luck Jets fans, things can't turn around until the team finds a franchise quarterback.

Jets | Two Jets to compete at QB    Thu Mar 2, 08:38 AM

New York Jets QB Bryce Petty and QB Christian Hackenberg will compete for the starting position in 2017.

Footballguys view: Hackenberg couldn't see the field last year as a rookie. Petty played a few games, finishing with three touchdowns and seven interceptions. Neither one is an exciting option, so expect the Jets to go after some quarterback via free agency or the draft.

Updating previous reports, New York Jets QB Bryce Petty (shoulder) will undergo surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Petty's injury is to his non-throwing shoulder, but the damage was bad enough that he needed surgery to repair it. He's already on Injured Reserve, and the team will turn to Ryan Fitzpatrick as their starter in Week 17.

Jets | Bryce Petty goes to IR    Mon Dec 26, 05:54 PM

New York Jets QB Bryce Petty (shoulder) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Monday, Dec. 26.

Footballguys view: Petty got in six games this year as Ryan Fitzpatrick disappointed as the starter. The second-year pro had 809 passing yards, three touchdowns and seven interceptions. Playing Madden doesn't make you a better NFL QB, and Petty didn't really improve during his time as the starter. The Jets should go back to Fitzpatrick as 2016 second-round pick Christian Hackenberg is unlikely to see the field this year.

Jets | Bryce Petty to undergo MRI exam    Sun Dec 25, 10:39 AM

Updating previous reports, New York Jets QB Bryce Petty (shoulder) will undergo an MRI exam on his injured left shoulder Monday, Dec. 26.

Updating a previous report, New York Jets QB Bryce Petty (shoulder) will not be able to return to the team's Week 16 game because of his shoulder injury.

Jets | Bryce Petty fully practices    Thu Dec 22, 04:59 PM

New York Jets QB Bryce Petty (chest) participated fully in practice Thursday, Dec. 22.

Footballguys view: Good, now you know which Jets quarterback you won't be starting. Actually, as bad as he was playing, it might have been an assassination attempt or mercy killing.

Updating a previous report, New York Jets QB Bryce Petty (chest) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Dec. 21, and will be the starting quarterback for Week 16.

Footballguys view: Petty's chest injury was minor even though it knocked him out of the game last week. In Week 16 against the Patriots, Petty should continue to force-feed the ball to WR Robby Anderson. Outside of Anderson (and RB Bilal Powell), it's difficult to trust any Jets skill position player in championship week.

Footballguys view: Petty's injury knocked him out of the game last week, and he was replaced by Ryan Fitzpatrick. It seems like he could be starting this week against the Patriots, and early reports indicate that should be the case. We're not confident in either Petty or Fitzpatrick in Week 16.

New York Jets QB Bryce Petty (chest) said he's likely to start in Week 16 after suffering a chest bruise last week. Petty practiced fully Tuesday, Dec. 20, and was able to make all his throws.
