Eagles | Ryan Mathews released    Tue Aug 15, 11:43 AM

Updating an earlier report, Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews was released Tuesday, Aug. 15.

Footballguys view: Mathews only needed to be cleared medically before the team released him. With injury problems and reports about a lack of confidence, we can't imagine Mathews getting a ton of interest on the open market.

Eagles | Decision on Ryan Mathews coming soon?    Mon Aug 14, 02:19 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews arrived in Philadelphia Monday, Aug. 14, which could generate a decision on his status with the Eagles in the near future.

Footballguys view: Mathews has to first get healthy, then the team should cut him. He has been recovering from offseason neck surgery and needs to be cleared so they can move on and not owe him an injury settlement.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews continuing to rehab    Sun Jul 30, 09:47 AM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (neck) is continuing to rehab from a herniated disc in his neck away from the team.

Footballguys view: Mathews release as soon as he is healthy is seen as a foregone conclusion, and the team's moves at running back this offseason seem to match that take. He should be able to catch on with a running back-needy team soon after his eventual release.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews still not healthy    Sun Jul 23, 03:37 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (neck) has yet to be medically cleared from offseason neck surgery, and his surgeon doesn't want to revisit the matter until sometime in August, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Eagles can't release Mathews until after he is cleared or they will have to pay an injury settlement. This will leave Mathews in a bad spot when it comes time to look for another job, but it is appropriate since his durability has been the main issue holding him back during his career.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews will be evaluated    Mon Jul 10, 05:35 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (neck) will be evaluated when he reports to training camp in regards to his neck fusion. If he passes the evaluation, he could be released.

Footballguys view: We can't imagine the Eagles hanging onto Mathews. If he's healthy enough to release, that's likely the direction the team goes. There have been reports to the contrary but there's really no room for him on the roster. They have LeGarrette Blount as the two-down hammer and guys like Darren Sproles and rookie DJ Pumphrey for passing down work. By waiting until he passes a physical, the Eagles don't have to pay him any money and can extinguish the $4 million cap hit Mathews is set to have.

Eagles | Cutting Ryan Mathews would hurt cap    Mon Jul 3, 04:03 PM

Waiving Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (back) with a failed physical designation would result in a salary cap hit of $1,150,000, according to Jimmy Kempski of the Philly Voice. Kempski added that if there were no salary camp consequences, the Eagles may have already released Mathews.

Footballguys view: This is one of the few roster mysteries left going into training camp. Darren Sproles recently said that Mathews and LeGarrette Blount would split work, but the Eagles beat writers have been assuming that Mathews is as good as gone once he is healthy. If Mathews is released, he has enough talent to easily get a shot elsewhere, but if he sticks, then Blount's ADP is probably overvalued and an already crowded Eagles backfield will get even more complicated. We still think Mathews will be a free agent before the season.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews not on the way out?    Fri Jun 30, 03:26 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Darren Sproles told ESPN's Josina Anderson Friday, June 30, that he - along with backfield mates LeGarrette Blount and Ryan Mathews - 'can share the ball and everyone can be happy.'

Footballguys view: The Eagles are going to use a RBBC that may be difficult for fantasy owners to navigate. Blount will be the battering ram as a runner, but he'll come off the field during passing down. Sproles is the change-of-pace back for the Eagles, but rookie D.J. Pumphrey is being groomed for that role as well. That doesn't leave a lot of room for Mathews in the rotation.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews done in Philly?    Wed May 17, 01:00 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews is expected to be released once he is healthy following the signing of LeGarrette Blount, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Footballguys view: As soon as the Blount news came in, it meant Mathews would be on his way out. Mathews suffered a neck injury late last year that required surgery, and he may not be designated healthy for another couple of months. If/When on the open market, we can't see teams lining up around the block for a 30-year old (in October), injury prone running back like Mathews.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews cleared to work out    Sat Apr 29, 09:30 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (back) has been cleared to work out, executive vice president of football operations Howie Roseman said Saturday, April 29.

Footballguys view: Many covering the Eagles expect Mathews to be released once he is healthy, so this is a sign that he could be on the way out. Darren Sproles and Wendell Smallwood will play roles in the backfield regardless of Mathews' status, but if he is let go, then there will some carries free for the taking in Philadelphia.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews likely done in Philly    Sat Mar 4, 06:25 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews 'probably has played his last game for the Eagles', according to the Philadelphia Daily News' Paul Domowitch.

Footballguys view: Mathews has a non-guaranteed $4 million salary in 2017. Releasing him would come with $1 million in dead money for the Eagles. Coming off a serious neck injury, Mathews could return to the Eagles with a pay cut. Either way, the Eagles need to find better options at the RB position, and that's why we think they'll draft a back this year in the draft at some point.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews making progress    Wed Mar 1, 04:09 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (back) is making good progress in his recovery from a back injury and is expected to be ready for next season, according to general manager Howie Roseman.

Footballguys view: Mathews is likely to be asked to take a pay cut. He's got a base salary of $4 million in 2016, and that's too high for a player with Mathews history.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews likely gone    Wed Jan 25, 11:23 AM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews is expected to be released in the offseason, in the opinion of PhillyVoice.com's Jimmy Kempski.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. Mathews is coming off a serious neck injury (herniated disk) he suffered near the end of the regular season. If the team releases him, they'll clear $4 million in cap space. It's a no-brainer to let him go.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews goes to injured reserve    Tue Dec 27, 06:22 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (back) was placed on season-ending injured reserve Tuesday, Dec. 27.

Footballguys view: The Eagles are thin at running back with only Darren Sproles and Byron Marshall healthy on the active roster. Practice squad running back Terrell Watson could be called up later this week.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews done for the season    Fri Dec 23, 01:20 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (back) has been ruled out for the rest of the season after suffering a herniated disc during the team's Week 16 win over the New York Giants and will miss 'significant time', according to head coach Doug Pederson, who added his running back will need surgery.

Footballguys view: Mathews has had more than his fair share of injury problems during his pro career. This injury could impact what he can do at least at the start of 2017. The Eagles only have Byron Marshall and Darren Sproles on the active roster. Practice squad runner Terrell Watson could get the call up for the final week of the season.

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews rushed for 128 yards and one touchdown on 20 carries against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 15.

Footballguys view: Mathews was a surprise Week 15 stud against a top-notch Ravens run defense. Darren Sproles could return from a concussion next week, but Mathews has earned lineup consideration heading into a tough matchup against the Giants.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews questionable    Fri Dec 9, 11:05 AM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (knee) is questionable for Week 14.

Footballguys view: Mathews should play and take enough snaps and touches in the backfield to make no Eagles running back more than a desperation play this week.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews practices in full    Thu Dec 8, 03:32 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (knee) fully participated in practice Thursday, Dec. 8.

Footballguys view: We currently have Mathews as a good RB4 start, even though it is a good matchup. The Eagles spread the carries out, and given quarterback Carson Wentz's struggles, we thing Washington will stack the box to stop the run and make him throw. In total, the backfield will have success but individually they will not put up much production.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews likely back    Wed Dec 7, 11:02 AM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (knee) will practice Wednesday, Dec. 7, and he's expected to play in Week 14.

Footballguys view: The Eagles haven't been able to run the ball well, and Mathews being back should help that a bit. What else helps that? They'll be at home facing a Washington team that has allowed an average of 114.3 rushing yards per game this season.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews does not practice    Thu Dec 1, 03:31 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (knee) did not participate in practice Thursday, Dec. 1.

Footballguys view: It looks like Mathews will not play this weekend. Wendell Smallwood will get a lot more carries and we have him as a borderline RB2/RB3. Sproles will get some work as well, but isn't more than a RB4.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews idle Wednesday    Wed Nov 30, 12:21 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (knee) will not practice Wednesday, Nov. 30.

Footballguys view: Mathews is considered week-to-week with this knee injury. We don't expect him to play this week. That means Wendell Smallwood would be the lead back with Darren Sproles mixing in as a change-of-pace back.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews remains day-to-day    Tue Nov 29, 12:39 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (knee) did not play as expected in Week 12 against the Green Bay Packers and remains day-to-day, according to head coach Doug Pederson.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners shouldn't be relying on Mathews, even if he does return to the field anytime soon. The Eagles will continue to see if Wendell Smallwood can do more as a featured player. Darren Sproles will also mix in as their receiving/change-of-pace back.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews ruled out    Sat Nov 26, 03:19 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (knee) did not participate in practice Saturday, Nov. 26, and has been ruled out for Week 12.

Footballguys view: Wendell Smallwood should see a bulk of the work in the Eagles backfield, but he will be splitting some time with Darren Sproles. We like Smallwood as a RB3/flex option for fantasy owners in Week 12.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews has 'significant' knee injury    Sat Nov 26, 01:03 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (knee) is dealing with a significant knee (injury)' and 'there is a concern that it could linger,' according to head coach Doug Pederson. Mathews suffered a sprained MCL in Week 11 versus the Seattle Seahawks.

Footballguys view: Mathews is one of the most oft-injured players in the NFL. This latest injury could linger for a few weeks.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews ruled out for Week 12    Sat Nov 26, 11:23 AM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (knee) has been ruled out for Week 12's game against the Green Bay Packers, according to head coach Doug Pederson.

Footballguys view: This moves Wendell Smallwood into the Eagles feature role. He could post RB2 numbers in Week 12, but we trust him more as a flex play against the Packers on Monday night.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews remains sidelined    Fri Nov 25, 04:08 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (knee) did not participate in practice Friday, Nov. 25.

Footballguys view: Wendell Smallwood should get the majority of carries in the backfield on Monday night unless Mathews' condition improves greatly tomorrow. The Packers run defense is tough on paper, but the game script in Philadelphia should still make Smallwood a solid PPR RB2.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews misses practice    Thu Nov 24, 12:24 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (knee) did not participate in practice Thursday, Nov. 24.

Footballguys view: Mathews' status - along with Darren Sproles' - will impact Wendell Smallwood's value, and as we have him as a high-end RB2, that could have tremendous repercussions for anyone rolling out an Eagles running back. The Eagles have been really inconsistent with Mathews' use and we wouldn't be shocked if that leaked into Smallwood's carries if Mathews or Sproles are active.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews sits out    Wed Nov 23, 11:19 AM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (knee) is out of practice Wednesday, Nov. 23.

Footballguys view: With Mathews and Darren Sproles (ribs) banged up, we could see Wendell Smallwood get a larger workload in Week 12 against the Packers. With the Packers struggling, Smallwood could post RB2 numbers on Monday night.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews day-to-day    Mon Nov 21, 01:11 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (knee) is being considered day-to-day after suffering a right MCL sprain in Week 11 against the Seattle Seahawks despite being spotted wearing a brace leaving the locker room following the game.

Footballguys view: The Eagles play on Monday night in Week 12, so we may not get many updates on Mathews' status before then. Wendell Smallwood would get a larger role if Mathews can't play. Go ahead and consider him the top RB priority on most waiver wires out there...even without a clear idea of Mathews' availability.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews has MCL sprain    Sun Nov 20, 06:59 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (knee) left the Week 11 game against the Seattle Seahawks due to a sprained medial collateral ligament, a source said Sunday, Nov. 20. He will be evaluated further over the next 24 hours.

Footballguys view: Mathews had been mostly healthy this year, but his history indicated that we shouldn't feel too safe. Next week against Green Bay may be a stretch for Mathews, who can be a slow healer.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews fully practices    Thu Nov 3, 04:59 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (tooth) participated fully in practice Thursday, Nov. 3.

Footballguys view: Well, at least we know now why he hasn't been playing well. Or maybe not. Mathews is being supplanted by Darren Sproles and until Sproles falls apart, isn't getting much work. Last week his owners were bailed out by a touchdown, but you can't count on that every week. He's no better than an RB3.

Eagles | Darren Sproles running well    Wed Nov 2, 10:58 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Darren Sproles is averaging 6.6 yards per carry over the last four games, and he has played more snaps than RB Ryan Mathews in all seven games the two have played together this season.

Footballguys view: Mathews is still considered the lead back, but he's not the better back for fantasy owners...especially in PPR leagues. With his workload, Sproles should continue to produce like a RB2.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews limited    Wed Nov 2, 03:42 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (tooth) was limited during practice Wednesday, Nov. 2.

Footballguys view: Mathews is going to be limited on Sunday too. The Eagles started using more of Darren Sproles, and he could be their most productive back even though Mathews is the starter.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews remains lead back    Wed Nov 2, 11:35 AM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews is still the lead running back, according to head coach Doug Pederson.

Footballguys view: Mathews is the lead back, but we feel more confident about Darren Sproles from a fantasy perspective. Sproles has done good things with his extra touches and could continue to get more work going forward. In PPR leagues, Sproles is a mid-range RB2 and Mathews is more of a flex play.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews might be replaced    Mon Oct 31, 10:05 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews could be replaced as the team's primary ball carrier. Head coach Doug Pederson said Monday, Oct. 31, that he is considering using RB Darren Sproles as the No. 1 back instead of Mathews. 'I can't say that 100 percent,' Pederson said. 'It's something we'll evaluate in these next couple of days and make that determination.'

Footballguys view: Sproles should be used more as he's productive when he touches the ball...and Mathews just is not. It would help keep Mathews fresh if he had a limited workload. Fantasy owners need to add Sproles if he's out there on the waiver wire.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews a ghost in Week 8    Mon Oct 31, 10:15 AM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews played just eight snaps Sunday, Oct. 30, against the Dallas Cowboys.

Footballguys view: Mathews is losing out on touches to Darren Sproles. He's a desperation flex play at best most every week with these roles changing in the Eagles backfield. Don't feel bad if you go ahead and drop him for better RBs on the waiver wire.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews' job safe for now    Tue Oct 25, 12:10 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews has committed a late fumble in two of the last three games, but head coach Doug Pederson does not plan to demote him.

Footballguys view: For now is the key part of the headline. Mathews doesn't give you confidence as a fantasy owner. He's hurt almost all the time (it seems), but when not banged up he's fumbling the rock away. Watch to see if the Eagles start to make a move in a different direction with more touches for guys like Wendell Smallwood.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews leads weak rushing attack    Sun Oct 23, 05:15 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews gained 56 yards on the ground Sunday, Oct. 23, in a 21-10 win over the Minnesota Vikings.

Footballguys view: The Eagles controlled this game, but the tough defensive opponent made it hard to put long drives together and feed Mathews. He's only a low ceiling flex against Dallas next week.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews plays 11 snaps    Mon Oct 17, 08:29 AM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews played just 11 snaps for 21 percent of the offense Sunday, Oct. 16.

Footballguys view: Mathews was fairly productive with the small amount of touches he received. He had nine carries for 60 yards against Washington on Sunday. We should see Mathews mixed in a bit more so long as he can stay healthy going forward.
