New England Patriots QB Brian Hoyer is expected to be the team's starter if the team's postponed Week 4 game is played Monday, Oct. 5 or Tuesday, Oct. 6.
Footballguys view: Jarrett Stidham has more long term promise, but Hoyer has great familiarity with the Josh McDaniels system. Hoyer can keep Julian Edelman viable in PPR leagues. |

New England Patriots QB Cam Newton received 30 repetitions during team drills Sunday, Aug. 23, while QB Brian Hoyer received 12 reps during 11-on-11 drills.
Footballguys view: Newton is pulling away in the quarterback competition and he's certainly worth a pick as your upside QB2, but he isn't drawing rave reviews for his practice performances and might have a slow start to the season. |

New England Patriots QBs Jarrett Stidham, Cam Newton and Brian Hoyer are competing for the starting job, but head coach Bill Belichick did not rule out the possibility of using a rotation at quarterback if it gives the team the best chance to win.
Footballguys view: Reiss is one of the best beat writers in the league, so when he suggests something we all should listen. The Patriots are running out of time to choose a starting quarterback and we could see a rotation early on in the season until one (Cam Newton?) emerges as the primary guy. It sounds crazy, but hey -- it would kind of fit 2020, right? |

New England Patriots QBs Cam Newton, Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer received equal repetitions during practice Monday, Aug. 17.
Footballguys view: The Patriots are not going to announce a starting quarterback until they have to. Newton should come out on top in this competition and so long as he's healthy could have a bounce-back season in 2020. We're expecting Stidham to beat out Hoyer for the no.2 quarterback job. |

New England Patriots QBs Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer have been working out with teammates this past week. WR Mohamed Sanu, WR Gunner Olszewski, RB Damien Harris and TE Dalton Keene were among the players participating in the workouts.
Footballguys view: Cam Newton was working out with Patriots free agent signing Damiere Byrd, who was his teammate in Carolina, and last week worked out with Sanu and 2019 first-round pick N'keal Harry. Stidham has a longer tenure with the team, and his familiarity with the offense and roster will be his best bet to win the starting job over Newton. |

New England Patriots QB Brian Hoyer finds himself in an 'interesting spot' following the addition of Cam Newton, and ESPN's Mike Reiss suggests he could be the odd man out if Newton is healthy and Jarrett Stidham shows well in training camp.
Footballguys view: Hoyer is there for veteran depth which now they might not need. Newton could win the starting job and if Stidham impresses then he could be the backup again. If Stidham somehow wins the job, then Newton could be there for veteran depth. |

New England Patriots QBs Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer have been working out together this offseason.
Footballguys view: That makes sense as Hoyer has been in the system a long time and the team is obviously valuing that at quarterback. Stidham beat Hoyer our for the backup spot last year. Hoyer would probably be better for the fantasy value of Patriots receivers, but either way this will be a bottom 10 pass offense. |

Former New England Patriots DL Rob Ninkovich (retired) believes QB Brian Hoyer will be under center for Week 1 of the 2020 season, instead of QB Jarrett Stidham. 'Look, when you're a second-year player, you really don't realize what a season's like as a starter,' Ninkovich said. 'You don't understand what it's going to take, and not having an offseason does not help. So, Brian Hoyer will be the starter Week 1.' Ninkovich also touted Hoyer's experience both as an NFL starter and in the Patriots' offensive system as reasons he should get the Week 1 start.
Footballguys view: Hoyer has all the experience in the world, so he's a 'safe' option to put your chips on. However, Stidham looked good in the preseason last year and might just win the job outright with improved play this year in training camp and the preseason. Fantasy GMs have plenty of other options at quarterback no matter who is the new starting quarterback for New England. |

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said Thursday, May 7, he's content with the team's options at quarterback after signing undrafted free-agent QBs Brian Lewerke and J'Mar Smith to go with Brian Hoyer and Jarrett Stidham. 'Yeah, well that is where we are -- you never know what is going to happen down the road, but we feel like we have four good players there,' Belichick said on NFL Network. 'We added Brian and J'Mar to Hoyer and Stidham. We added Hoyer and had Stidham from last year. We like working with those guys and we will see how it goes.'
Footballguys view: The Patriots are likely to roll with Stidham as their starter in 2020. Stidham was a fourth-round pick last year but he showed some flashes in the preseason as a rookie. It's a huge shadow left by Tom Brady but with Belichick leading the way this team can still win enough games to get them around .500 on the season. |

New England Patriots QB Brian Hoyer is more likely to be the Week 1 starter than Jarrett Stidham, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network Thursday, April 16. 'My guess right now is Brian Hoyer is the starting quarterback of the Patriots in 2020, but I think that is something that will be ever-evolving as we get through next season,' Rapoport said.
Footballguys view: We'll see how things shake out in training camp and the preseason. Hoyer is the veteran who has a ton of experience, but Stidham had first-round tools even though he fell to the fourth round in the 2019 NFL draft. We'll also see if the Patriots add a quarterback in the 2020 NFL draft. |

In life after Tom Brady, New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said the team will adapt and gear everything for doing what is best for their new starting quarterback, whoever that may be. Belichick said that's what they did previously for Brady and he doesn't see that changing. 'Whoever the quarterback is, we'll try to make things work smoothly and efficiently for that player and take advantage of his strengths and his skills,' Belichick noted. The Patriots currently have QBs Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer on roster.
Footballguys view: It's going to be odd to see a different quarterback lining up for the Patriots. Belichick believes he and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels have a 'pretty good feel for both' quarterbacks. The team may also address the position in the upcoming NFL Draft, potentially early. |

Updating a previous report, free-agent QB Brian Hoyer (Colts) agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the New England Patriots Sunday, March 22, worth $2 million.
Footballguys view: Hoyer will be a backup for the Patriots once again. This is his third stint with the team and if he sees the field the team won't go in the tank. |

Free-agent QB Brian Hoyer (Colts) agreed to terms with the New England Patriots Sunday, March 22. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Here we go again. Hoyer has been with the Patriots a couple of times before after the team picked him up as an undrafted free agent out of Michigan State back in 2009. He'll be a backup for the Patriots once again. |

Free-agent QB Brian Hoyer (Colts) is open to signing with the New England Patriots this offseason in a backup role.
Footballguys view: He could sign for a third stint with the Patriots to be a veteran backup. The Patriots may sign a veteran quarterback to be a starter in free agency (Cam Newton?), but they could also roll with second-year pro Jarrett Stidham as their starter. If the latter is the case, then they'd really need an experienced backup like Hoyer. |

Indianapolis Colts QB Brian Hoyer was released Saturday, March 21.
Footballguys view: With Philip Rivers signed as the starter, the Colts had to clear some room in the quarterback room. Hoyer is a seasoned veteran backup and he should land somewhere in the same role for the 2020 season. |

Indianapolis Colts QB Brian Hoyer will get the start Sunday, Nov. 10, against the Miami Dolphins after QB Jacoby Brissett (knee) was ruled out.
Footballguys view: It's the best move for the Colts. They're playing a hapless Dolphins team and can get the win with Hoyer under center. We should see Brissett back as the starter in Week 11 against the Jaguars. |

Indianapolis Colts QB Brian Hoyer completed 17-of-26 passes for 168 yards, three touchdowns and one interception in Week 9 against the Pittsburgh Steelers in relief of the injured QB Jacoby Brissett (knee).
Footballguys view: The Colts offense was functional with Hoyer and he should be able to exploit the Dolphins defense if Brissett can't go next week. The Colts lost a heartbreaker in a situation where this outcome could end up being the difference between a playoff spot and staying home, although they should be able to recover in the standings next week. |

Free-agent QB Brian Hoyer (Patriots) signed a three-year, $12 million deal with the Indianapolis Colts Monday, Sept. 2.

Free-agent QB Brian Hoyer (Patriots) is receiving interest from the Denver Broncos, according to sources.
Footballguys view: Don't be surprised to see this move made. Joe Flacco doesn't have a healthy backup right now with 2019 second-round pick Drew Lock (thumb) banged up. Hoyer played under Broncos OC Rich Scangarello when the two were with the 49ers in 2017. |

New England Patriots QB Brian Hoyer was released Saturday, Aug. 31.
Footballguys view: The Patriots have rookie Jarrett Stidham now as the primary backup to Tom Brady. Hoyer should get plenty of interest from teams in need of a veteran reserve at the quarterback position. In fact, don't be surprised if the Broncos give him a shot to be the backup to Joe Flacco in 2019. |

New England Patriots QBs Danny Etling, Brian Hoyer and Jarrett Stidham are splitting up the workload in voluntary organized team activities with QB Tom Brady not participating for the second year in a row.
Footballguys view: When the work becomes mandatory, Brady will be in attendance. We'll see how the depth chart behind Brady shapes up during training camp and the preseason. Hoyer is the seasoned veteran who could be the primary backup for Brady with the Patriots still in a Super Bowl window. Stidham is the interesting rookie we like in dynasty formats. We'll see if the fourth-round pick out of Auburn can develop and learn behind one of the greatest. |

Updating previous reports, New England Patriots QB Brian Hoyer will make $7.776 million in 2017, $3.815 million in 2018 and $3.05 million in 2019. The 49ers owe him $7.3 million and $2.9 million in 2017 and 2018, and the Patriots will pay him $476,000 and $915,000, respectively.
Footballguys view: Hoyer is a safety net, which he knows and is OK with. For the Patriots it is a smart signing, given how well he knows the offense. In the unlikely event the immortal Tom Brady gets hurt, Hoyer can keep the wheels from falling off. |

Free-agent QB Brian Hoyer (49ers) is set to sign a three-year contract with the New England Patriots on Wednesday, Nov. 1.
Footballguys view: After trading away Jimmy Garoppolo to the 49ers, the Patriots were without a backup quarterback. It was an easy call to go back to Hoyer. He began his career in the NFL as an undrafted free agent for New England back in 2009. Hoyer spent a couple of seasons with the Patriots before bouncing around to six other NFL teams. |

San Francisco 49ers QB Brian Hoyer was released Monday, Oct. 30, according to a source.
