Saints | Drew Brees plans to make decision soon    Sun Jan 26, 11:49 AM

Updating a previous report, New Orleans Saints impending free-agent QB Drew Brees said he plans to 'give it a month or so' before determining if he will return to the team for the 2020 season or retire.

Footballguys view: He had previously stated that he is not considering playing for any other teams. That means if it's the Saints or bust for Brees. He will make a decision soon enough for the team to go in a different direction if need be. Teddy Bridgewater is an unrestricted free agent in 2020 but loves the staff, his teammates and the city. He went 5-0 as the Saints starter when Brees was down in 2019 and could step in as the starter if Brees ends up retiring.

Saints | Drew Brees' decision on hold    Thu Jan 23, 01:34 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees isn't rushing his decision on whether he'll return for another season. I wanted to give it at least a few weeks, months, postseason, just to take a deep breath and decompress a little bit and get some time with the family and then just reassess,' Brees said Wednesday, Jan. 22, during an interview at the Pro Bowl.

Footballguys view: Brees may not quite be what he used to be but by no means is he done from a physical or abilities standpoint. He'll have to make a decision before the start of free agency in early March. This quarterback market is about to get crazy in the NFL.

Saints | GM wants Drew Brees to return    Wed Jan 22, 06:42 PM

New Orleans Saints impending free-agent QB Drew Brees is a player that the Saints want to keep as long as he wants to keep playing, according to general manager Mickey Loomis.

Footballguys view: This is going to be up to Brees. If he wants to keep playing, the Saints want to keep him around. Brees takes one year at a time and will spend this part of the offseason deciding what he wants to do.

Saints | Alvin Kamara a holdout candidate?    Thu Jan 16, 01:25 AM

New Orleans Saints RB Alvin Kamara could hold out in hopes of securing a long-term contract extension, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Mike Triplett, who notes that the team's other top contributors from the 2017 draft class can have their fifth-year options picked up, whereas Kamara is set to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2020 season. Triplett also mentions that valuing Kamara may be difficult because despite his versatility he only plays about two-thirds of the team's offensive snaps.

Footballguys view: We'll see what the Saints want to do here. Kamara is one of the best in the game at his position when healthy and should be compensated as such.

Saints | Coach expects Drew Brees back in 2020    Sun Jan 12, 02:01 PM

New Orleans Saints impending free-agent QB Drew Brees is expected to talk with head coach Sean Payton Monday, Jan. 13, and Payton said he expects Brees to be the Saints quarterback next season.

Footballguys view: The Saints have some big decisions this offseason. Brees is a free agent and so are backups Teddy Bridgewater and Taysom Hill. After the loss to the Vikings in the Wild Card Round, Brees declined to comment on whether or not he would continue playing football. Over 40-years old Brees is clearly not the same player he used to be.

New Orleans Saints TE Jared Cook has been added to the NFC Pro Bowl roster as an injury replacement for Philadelphia Eagles TE Zach Ertz (back, ribs).

Saints | Drew Brees mum on his future    Mon Jan 6, 01:01 AM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees declined to make any comment on his future in the wake of the team's Wild Card loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, Jan. 5.

Footballguys view: The Saints have some interesting decisions in front of them. With the team failing to make the most of their Super Bowl window, one has to wonder how much time they have left with Brees. The veteran superstar turns 41 later this month and is set to become an unrestricted free agent.

Saints | New Orleans loses Wild Card game    Sun Jan 5, 04:38 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees went 26-for-33 for 208 yards, one touchdown and one interception against the Minnesota Vikings in the Wild Card playoff game. QB Taysom Hill completed a 50-yard pass, rushed for 50 yards on four carries and caught two passes for 25 yards and one touchdown during the game. RB Alvin Kamara rushed for 21 yards and one touchdown on seven carries and caught eight passes for 34 yards. RB Latavius Murray rushed for 21 yards on five carries. WR Michael Thomas caught seven passes for 70 yards on eight targets. TE Jared Cook caught five passes for 54 yards on five targets, while WR Ted Ginn Jr. caught one pass for 18 yards on two targets.

Footballguys view: The Saints just couldn't stop the Vikings offense down the stretch. There was a potential non-call on Vikings TE Kyle Rudolph when he pushed off to score a touchdown in overtime, but so many other opportunities slipped through the Saints fingers on Sunday. It's another disappointing end for the Saints in the postseason. The Saints are now the first team in NFL history to have six straight playoff eliminations by one score and the second team since the Packers from 2013-15 to be eliminated in three straight postseasons on the final play of the game.

Saints | Tim White to practice squad    Mon Dec 30, 04:23 PM

Free-agent WR Tim White (Jets) was signed to the New Orleans Saints practice squad Monday, Dec. 30.

Footballguys view: Undrafted out of Arizona State in 2017 (Ravens), White spent last offseason with the Jets on a futures contract. He failed to make the team and has been waiting for an opportunity since then. The Saints will see if there's anything there as a developmental prospect. He's a track star who can work as a slot receiver, deep receiver or return man. We'll monitor him in crazy deep dynasty formats.

Saints | Week 17 final stats for Saints    Sun Dec 29, 04:23 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees wrapped up the regular season with 19-of-30 passing for 253 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in Week 17 against the Carolina Panthers. RB Latavius Murray led the team with 61 rushing yards on 17 attempts, while RB Alvin Kamara posted eight runs for 39 yards and two touchdowns while hauling in two grabs for 18 yards. WR Tre'Quan Smith led the way with five grabs for 56 yards and a score, and QB Taysom Hill had a 45-yard touchdown on his only grab while running for four yards. WR Michael Thomas was held to just 37 yards on four grabs across nine targets. TE Jared Cook also contributed two catches for 44 yards and a TD. LB A.J. Klein also added a 14-yard interception for touchdown.

Footballguys view: Brees had an easy day in the tune up for a possible game next week against Minnesota if the 49ers beat the Seahawks and a bye and #2 seed if the Seahawks win at home. He may retire after this season, but appears to be in better form than fellow aging quarterbacks Philip Rivers, Tom Brady, and Aaron Rodgers.

Saints | NO not expected to sign Antonio Brown    Sat Dec 28, 10:09 AM

Updating a previous report, New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton said a possible signing of free-agent WR Antonio Brown (Patriots) is not imminent after he worked out for the team Friday, Dec. 27.

Footballguys view: The Saints were doing their due diligence by bringing Brown in for a workout. They want to make a Super Bowl run and get another championship as they've been close in recent years but have fallen short in heartbreaking ways. Outside of Michael Thomas, the Saints don't have much at the wide receiver position. Adding a talent like Brown could help their passing game in a big way...if the team could put up with the distractions that are going to come when he's signed by a new team.

Saints | Antonio Brown visiting Saints    Fri Dec 27, 09:06 AM

Free-agent WR Antonio Brown (Patriots) is visiting the New Orleans Saints Friday, Dec. 27.

Footballguys view: Brown will end up on the commissioner's exempt list if he is signed before the investigation into a sexual assault lawsuit is complete. This could be a sign that the investigation is closer to a close, or perhaps just that the Saints are interested in Brown's services once it is, even if that isn't until the offseason. Despite his antics in one of the most unbelievable chains of events in one year for a player, Brown will likely find employment in the NFL again in the future if legal matters don't keep him out of the league permanently.

Footballguys view: The Saints still have something to play for in Week 17. Currently the No.3 seed, they can move back into a first-round bye (the No.2 seed) by a number of different combinations -- so they'll need to help those chances by getting a win over the Panthers on Sunday.
