Saints | More expected from Marcus Davenport    Fri Jul 3, 11:52 AM

New Orleans Saints DE Marcus Davenport is being relied upon for more in his third season. 'He's definitely has room to get better and it's there, the potential and the growth is there,' Saints defensive line coach Ryan Nielsen said. 'I think he made a big step last season. There's some games where he was playing lights-out. Talking to him, I think his confidence is better this offseason. He's working hard and I know he had a couple of injuries, but he's put the work in.'

Footballguys view: The Saints gave up two first round picks for Davenport and on some plays you can see why, but he ended up on injured reserve with a foot injury last year. If he can return to full speed and take another step forward in his third year, the Saints pass rush will be very difficult to slow down.

Saints | Kiko Alonso on track for camp    Thu Jul 2, 05:19 PM

New Orleans Saints LB Kiko Alonso (knee) is on track to be ready for the start of training camp, according to NewOrleans.Football's Nick Underhill.

Footballguys view: Alonso tore his ACL in the playoffs so this is a great development for the defense, which is also getting back Sheldon Rankins, Alex Anzalone, and Marcus Davenport from injuries. Alonso, Anzalone, and third-round pick Zach Baun will compete for the linebacker job next to Demario Davis.

Saints | Michael Thomas delivers on contested catches    Sun Jun 28, 07:12 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas has hauled in 57.4 percent of his contested catch opportunities since 2016, according to Pro Football Focus. That mark ranks third in the league over that span.

Footballguys view: Thomas has a big body and a 'my ball' mentality that is among the best in the league. He'll rank high in this category once again in 2020.

Saints | Malcolm Jenkins not comfortable returning    Thu Jun 25, 05:58 PM

New Orleans Saints S Malcolm Jenkins said Thursday, June 25, he wouldn't feel comfortable returning to football until the risk of the COVID-19 pandemic is eliminated. 'Until we get to the point where we have protocols in place and until we get to a place as a country where we feel safe doing it, we have to understand that football is a nonessential business and so we don't need to do it,' Jenkins said. 'And so the risk has to be really eliminated before we, before I, would feel comfortable with going back.' He later released a follow-up video in which he stressed his desire to play.

Saints | Drew Brees, Emmanuel Sanders working out    Tue Jun 23, 08:31 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees and WR Emmanuel Sanders posted a short video clip on social media of the two players working out together on a Colorado high school football field Tuesday, June 23.

Footballguys view: Sanders gives Brees something he hasn't had in quite some time...another playmaking receiver opposite of Michael Thomas. We'll still see Thomas dominate on the field because you can't guard Mike, and that is going to open things up for Sanders. He's a savvy veteran who is tough and will get open regularly. That sounds like a great combination with Brees. He's a WR4 with upside for Fantasy GMs.

Saints | Alvin Kamara tough to bring down    Sun Jun 21, 09:33 PM

New Orleans Saints RB Alvin Kamara's 5.9 rush attempts per broken tackle in 2019 was the best rate among qualified rushers, and his 29 broken tackles were tied for the third most.

Footballguys view: Kamara had a down season in 2019 due to injury, but he still stood out in this metric. Now healthy, Kamara should be in for a bounce-back season in 2020. Kamara has a current ADP of RB11 (2.04) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Saints | Three LBs to compete for playing time    Sat Jun 20, 05:53 PM

New Orleans Saints LBs Kiko Alonso, Zack Baun and Alex Anzalone will compete for playing time during training camp.

Footballguys view: Baun is again mentioned as a candidate to move inside, which would add a lot of value to his IDP profile. Alonso and Anzalone have had trouble staying healthy throughout their careers, so Baun could be starting next to Demario Davis at some point this year.

Saints | Terron Armstead nearly impossible to beat    Wed Jun 17, 09:09 PM

New Orleans Saints OT Terron Armstead surrendered one sack on 579 pass-blocking snaps in 2019, according to Pro Football Focus.

Saints | Alvin Kamara improved on little things    Wed Jun 17, 10:39 AM

New Orleans Saints RB Alvin Kamara stepped up in pass protection, made defenders miss whether he was in open space or in barely any space at all and ran through tackle attempts by people who had 70 pounds on him, according to running backs coach Joel Thomas.

Footballguys view: Little things add up to big things, and Kamara is one of the hardest workers in the game. Last year, Kamara wasn't quite himself as injuries slowed him down. This season, with better weapons around him on offense, Kamara should be able to get back to producing like a top-5 fantasy running back.

Saints | Alvin Kamara riddled with injuries in 2019    Mon Jun 15, 10:27 PM

New Orleans Saints RB Alvin Kamara 'played through a lot' in 2019, according to running backs coach Joel Thomas, who said Kamara dealt with knee, ankle and back injuries. Thomas also went on to say 'Kamara's 75 percent is a lot of people's 100 percent' and that was why he continued to play as much as he did.

Footballguys view: Kamara only missed two games last year but he did not look like himself while dealing with these injuries. We should see him continue to catch around 80 passes this year while getting near 1,000 yards on the ground. Kamara needs to see a bump up in touchdowns (18 TDs in 2018, 6 TDs in 2019) if he wants to finish as a top-5 fantasy running back.

Saints | Kiko Alonso could start on PUP list    Sat Jun 13, 10:06 PM

New Orleans Saints LB Kiko Alonso (knee) will likely start training camp on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list.

Footballguys view: Alonso has not been able to stay healthy for long during his career and it's possible that he stays on the PUP list to open the season. Holder also mentions that the team sees third-round pick Zack Baun as capable of playing middle linebacker so this could be a situation in flux long term for IDP players to monitor closely.

Saints | Big role possible for Ty Montgomery?    Sat Jun 13, 09:39 PM

New Orleans Saints RB Ty Montgomery 'seems like a clear alternative' to RB Alvin Kamara if Kamara were to miss time, according to Larry Holder of The Athletic.

Footballguys view: Montgomery has been a successful running back/wide receiver tweener with Green Bay in the past, but when he overrided the directive to take a knee and cost the Packers a chance to stay in a game late, he bought his ticket out of town. This could hurt Latavius Murray's upside if Kamara were to go down this year, but Murray was an elite RB1 when Kamara missed two games last year, so he's still one of the better handcuffs out there.

Saints | Taysom Hill to remain a specialist?    Sat Jun 13, 09:23 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Taysom Hill will continue to play multiple position even if QB Drew Brees misses time in 2020, according to Larry Holder of The Athletic, and Holder believes QB Jameis Winston will take over the traditional backup role that Carolina Panthers QB Teddy Bridgewater filled last year.

Footballguys view: Hill did catch six touchdowns last year and he seems to perk up the offense when he gets on the field, so keeping him in this role is smart, but it doesn't necessarily have to preclude the team from having him serve as the backup. They would need to carry a third quarterback anyway in case Hill gets hurt, but it is surprising that a player expected to take over at quarterback next year isn't trusted to be a backup this year.

Saints | Jameis Winston the likely backup    Sat Jun 13, 09:16 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Jameis Winston will serve as the backup quarterback and start if QB Drew Brees were to miss time in 2020, according to Larry Holder of The Athletic.

Footballguys view: It continues to seem odd that the Saints would give Taysom Hill a two-year, $21 million extension and trumpet him as the quarterback of the future while not being willing to make him the backup of the present. Winston would obviously be a better option for the passing game if Brees misses time, so this is good news for Michael Thomas, Emmanuel Sanders, Jared Cook, and Alvin Kamara.

Saints | New Orleans may use more two TE sets    Wed Jun 10, 03:36 PM

New Orleans Saints TE Adam Trautman may allow the team to use more two-tight end sets this upcoming season, according to tight ends coach Dan Campbell.

Footballguys view: We'll see how the rookie from Dayton gets mixed in this year. Trautman is going to compete for a spot backing up Jared Cook. Both are dangerous receiving threats, so perhaps there will be times when Cook and Trautman are on the field together.

Saints | Jameis Winston staying confident    Tue Jun 9, 04:22 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Jameis Winston said he still believes in himself after going from a starter in 2019 to competing for a backup job with the Saints in 2020. 'I know what I'm worth,' Winston said. 'And I know day in and day out, without publicly coming in and saying it, that historically I'm one of the best quarterbacks to play the game.' Winston went on to say he's eager to work his way back up to a starting role.

Footballguys view: Winston is not clearly the backup to Drew Brees. The former no.1 overall pick will have to compete in training camp with Taysom Hill to be the backup. Winston had over 5,000 yards passing last year but shouldn't see the field too much this year unless Brees gets banged up.

Saints | Michael Thomas ridiculously good on slants    Thu May 28, 10:07 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas has been targeted 118 times on slant routes over the course of his four-year career and caught 97 of them for 988 yards - good for a success rate of 85 percent.

Footballguys view: Michael Thomas is just ridiculously good...period. It doesn't matter the type of route he runs, Thomas is going to get open and come down with the ball. The Saints added free agent WR Emmanuel Sanders to the mix this offseason and that should only help Thomas see better coverage. Thomas is a WR1/no-brainer/must-start every week.

Saints | Tim White cut    Thu May 28, 05:03 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Tim White was waived Thursday, May 28.

Footballguys view: White was undrafted out of Arizona State in 2017. The Saints picked him up late last year as a practice squad player then they signed him to a futures contract earlier this year. With OT James Hurst signed on Thursday, the Saints needed to make some room on the roster.

Saints | QBs felt good throwing to Jared Cook    Tue May 26, 08:58 PM

New Orleans Saints TE Jared Cook caught 43 of 52 catchable targets and scored a career-high nine touchdowns in 2019. Additionally, quarterbacks enjoyed a passer rating of 137.0 when throwing in his direction - the best passer rating for any receiver or tight end with at least 50 targets.

Footballguys view: Throwing to Cook makes good things happen...especially in the Saints offense. He's always been athletically gifted but Cook flourished last year in his first season in New Orleans. He's a TE1 for Fantasy GMs and could end up as a top-5 player at his position in 2020.

Saints | Michael Thomas blazing an impressive trail    Tue May 26, 08:04 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas has recorded an NFL-best 299 receptions that resulted in first downs or touchdowns since entering the league in 2016, according to Pro Football Focus.

Footballguys view: His Twitter handle says it all 'Can't Guard Mike' and that's the truth. Thomas has some help in the WR room this year as the team went out and added veteran Emmanuel Sanders in free agency. We'll see Thomas continue to dominate in 2020.

New Orleans Saints TE Jared Cook scored a career-high nine touchdowns in 2019 while averaging 16.4 yards per catch and logging 15 receptions of at least 20 yards.

Footballguys view: Cook is a big-play machine and certainly dangerous in the Saints offense. The Saints added WR Emmanuel Sanders in free agency and that should only help keep Cook open on the regular.

Saints | Drew Brees tops when kept safe    Sat May 23, 03:01 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees is Pro Football Focus' highest-graded quarterback over the last two seasons when kept free from pressure.

Footballguys view: Brees is deadly when he has time to throw. He stays on time and on target better than any quarterback in the league. Brees may be playing his final season in 2020 and his game has not fallen off much if at all.

Saints | Taysom Hill next in line?    Fri May 22, 09:35 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Taysom Hill will 'be the guy' when QB Drew Brees retires, according to Jay Glazer of The Athletic.

Footballguys view: That's been 'the word' for some time, so nothing really new here. Hill may actually get more work behind Brees this year, not just as a gadget quarterback. Of course, Hill will have to beat out free agent addition Jameis Winston to win the primary backup job behind Brees in 2020.

Saints | New Orleans to hold competition for backup job    Thu May 21, 06:40 PM

New Orleans Saints QBs Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill will have to compete and beat out the competition to back up QB Drew Brees in 2020, according to head coach Sean Payton Thursday, May 21.

Footballguys view: The word is Hill is going to get more playing time this year, even if that's as a gadget/third-string quarterback. Winston has all the starting experience and is the better passer, so we're expecting him to win the primary backup job behind Brees.

Saints | Michael Thomas promises to be ready for season    Tue May 19, 05:58 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas isn't disclosing his offseason workout program, but he vows to be ready whenever he's needed on the field with teammates. 'I'll be ready when the season comes,' Thomas said. 'More than ready.'

Footballguys view: The Saints cancelled their virtual offseason under the direction of head coach Sean Payton. Thomas is arguably the best receiver in the game and there is no worry that he'll be ready whenever the team meets back at the facility.

Saints | Drew Brees torched man and zone last season    Sun May 17, 04:35 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees was one of three quarterbacks to finish inside the top five in QBR against man coverage (78.6; fourth) and versus zone coverage (72.5; fifth) in 2019, according to ESPN's Matt Bowen.

Footballguys view: That's what Brees does...he torches defenses. Some may say Brees is not quite the quarterback he used to be and that's fine, Father Time catches up with everyone. However, Brees is still a top-tier passer and this type of success against man or zone coverage should continue this season.

Saints | Michael Thomas tops in catch rate    Sat May 16, 12:22 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas caught 80.5 percent of his 185 targets in 2019 to lead all wide receivers with at least 75 targets.

Footballguys view: Thomas doesn't let many passes get past him. He's one of the most focused receivers in the league and the centerpiece of what the Saints do on offense. He's got more help at the position this year with veteran Emmanuel Sanders added in free agency. That should take some attention away from the defense, but Thomas is a top-tier talent no matter if he's double-covered or not.

Saints | Michael Thomas shouldered heavy load in 2019    Tue May 12, 11:21 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas was targeted on a league-high 31.1 percent of his team's pass attempts in 2019.

Footballguys view: That's because the Saints haven't had much in the WR room besides Thomas. That changes this year with Emmanuel Sanders added in free agency. We'll see how much Thomas sees his target load reduced now that Sanders is starting opposite of him.

Saints | Drew Brees on point again in 2019    Tue May 12, 10:18 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees threw a catchable ball on 82.8 percent of his pass attempts in 2019, according to Sports Info Solutions. The only other time a quarterback topped that mark over the last five seasons was when Brees threw a catchable ball 83.6 percent of the time in 2018.

Footballguys view: That sounds about right. Brees is more accurate than an Olympic archer (see that Sports Science special) and continues to play near the top of his game. Expect more of the same in 2020.

Saints | Adam Trautman converted from QB    Tue May 12, 10:35 AM

New Orleans Saints third-round pick TE Adam Trautman entered college as a quarterback and gained 40 lbs in his transition to tight end. He caught a school-record 70 passes with 916 yards and 14 touchdowns in 2019.

Footballguys view: Trautman was a pretty good high school quarterback too, but he quickly transitioned to tight end at Dayton. He knows how to run routes from in-line, the slot or even out wide. Trautman knows how to be a quarterback's best friend, finding soft spots in a zone, coming back to the ball, squaring his shoulders to the line of scrimmage. Trautman only dropped two passes out of all the catchable balls he had thrown his way in 2019. He's a dynasty prospect we're excited about as he could be the eventual replacement for Jared Cook in the Saints offense.

New Orleans Saints OG Cesar Ruiz will move into the starting lineup at right guard as a rookie after the release of OG Larry Warford Friday, May 8. The move also gives the Saints the second-fastest offensive line in the NFL.

Footballguys view: Ruiz was considered NFL ready and an instant starter so this shouldn't be considered a downgrade at all for one of the best offensive lines in the league.

New Orleans Saints OG Larry Warford was released Friday, May 8, according to a source. The move will save more than $7 million against the salary cap after he was paid $700,000 in roster bonus money earlier this year.

Footballguys view: Warford is still a quality power run blocker. The Jets, Dolphins, and Vikings are among the teams that should be interested in him. The team was reportedly shopping him but could get no takers in a trade.
