Jaguars | Ben Bartch signs rookie deal    Fri Jul 10, 03:58 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars fourth-round draft choice OG Ben Bartch signed a four-year contract with the Jaguars Friday, July 10. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Bartch is the first Division III player David Caldwell has drafted with the Jaguars. He played tackle at St. John's (Minnesota) but Jacksonville appears to be planning to start him out at guard behind AJ Cann. The Jaguars have signed six of their 12 picks, but have yet to get the signatures of first round picks CJ Henderson and K'Lavon Chaisson.

Jaguars | Laviska Shenault Jr. signs rookie deal    Thu Jul 9, 05:00 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars second-round WR Laviska Shenault Jr. officially signed his four-year rookie contract Thursday, July 9. Financial terms of the deal were undisclosed.

Footballguys view: Shenault should be lined up all over the formation and have a chance to make an impact as a rookie. Only DJ Chark is under contract for 2021 among the top receivers, so Shenault's time to shine is coming soon.

Jaguars | Fewer grabs for Leonard Fournette?    Sat Jul 4, 09:59 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars RB Leonard Fournette could see his reception total cut in half in 2020 because of the addition of RB Chris Thompson, according to Mike DiRocco of ESPN.com.

Footballguys view: Thompson has never been known for his durability, but he should be the leading target out of the backfield as long as he is on the field. Fournette is likely in his last year with the Jaguars, so the team could also look to younger options like Ryquell Armstead more as the year goes on.

Jaguars | DaVon Hamilton signs rookie deal    Mon Jun 29, 03:19 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars third-round draft choice DT DaVon Hamilton signed a four-year contract with the Jaguars Monday, June 29, worth $4.81 million. The deal includes a $1.065 million signing bonus.

Footballguys view: Hamilton only started three games for Ohio State entering the 2019 season. In 2019, he started 14 games for the Buckeyes and posted career-best numbers with 10.5 tackles for loss and 6.0 sacks. At 320 pounds, Hamilton has first-step quickness and uses rip moves to apply interior pressure on opposing quarterbacks. He has violent striking hands and could work his way into the rotation quickly as an early-down defensive tackle.

Jaguars | Leonard Fournette does it all    Wed Jun 24, 10:33 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars RB Leonard Fournette's contributions in 2019 were praised by head coach Doug Marrone. 'I think Leonard did everything that we wanted him to do - you talk about a workhorse,' Marrone said. 'A guy that carried the load, a guy that had a ton of receptions.'

Footballguys view: In Fournette's first two seasons, he had 58 receptions combined. In 2019, Fournette had a whopping 76 catches but that number should go down this year. The Jaguars went out in free agency and added pass-catching back Chris Thompson. Fournette should still be the banger between the tackles, but Thompson is a better receiving option and should get more catches (giving Fournette less) in 2020.

Jaguars | Teammate praises Gardner Minshew's initiative    Mon Jun 22, 11:52 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Gardner Minshew has reportedly organized video sessions with his teammates - in addition to the regular virtual OTA meetings run by the coaches - as players try to work through the offense together remotely, according to TE Tyler Eifert.'(Minshew) took charge, took initiative during the OTAs to get the guys together aside from our OTA meetings. We'd get on and do like a virtual walkthrough. It's just good to learn a little bit different than just looking at your installs and trying to memorize it. You've got to think on your feet a little bit,' Eifert told Sirius XM NFL Radio.

Footballguys view: Minshew looked to be in better shape than last year in recent videos too. This is his chance to establish himself as a starting quality NFL quarterback if not for the Jaguars, for 31 other teams if the Jaguars take a quarterback early next year. His dynasty value in superflex leagues hangs in the balance.

Jaguars | Collin Johnson signs rookie deal    Thu Jun 18, 04:07 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars fifth-round draft choice WR Collin Johnson signed a four-year contract with the Jaguars Thursday, June 18. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Johnson is a huge target who could work well in the red zone for the Jaguars. He lacks run-after-the-catch ability but Johnson is a strong run-blocker and has soft hands as a receiver. He knows how to use his frame to his advantage and should begin his pro career as a sub-package wide receiver.

Jaguars | Tyler Davis under contract    Fri Jun 12, 05:58 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars sixth-round draft choice TE Tyler Davis signed a four-year contract with the Jaguars Friday, June 12. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Davis is a blocking tight end who can also contribute on special teams, but chances are there's nothing there for fantasy. He did have six receiving touchdowns at UConn in 2018 and then was used sparingly in the passing game in the triple-option offense at Georgia Tech last year.

Jaguars | Laviska Shenault Jr. putting in work    Fri Jun 12, 10:34 AM

Jacksonville Jaguars second-round pick WR Laviska Shenault Jr. (abdomen) is doing on-field work to rehab his core muscle injury he had operated on in February.

Footballguys view: Shenault had some concerns about durability in the draft but his ceiling is as high as any receiver in this draft. The Jaguars have plans to use Shenault all over the formation, but if he isn't ready for camp, that will be difficult to follow through on.

Jaguars | A.J. Cann likely top option at RG    Mon Jun 8, 07:26 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars OG A.J. Cann probably will be the starting right guard this upcoming season since OG Ben Bartch did not have offseason workouts and likely would be behind the curve, in the opinion of JaguarsWire's James Johnson.

Jaguars | Chris Claybrooks excited about returner role    Mon Jun 1, 06:07 PM

Jaguars | Gardner Minshew elite going deep    Sat May 30, 02:34 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Gardner Minshew earned a 94.7 Pro Football Focus grade on throws of at least 20 yards downfield in 2019, ranking him third among quarterbacks.

Footballguys view: Minshew needs to take steps forward in 2020. He was good deep but he needs to improve on short-to-intermediate routes. We'll see how he meshes with his new weapons in 2020.

Jaguars | Gardner Minshew familiar with Laviska Shenault Jr.    Thu May 28, 08:25 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Gardner Minshew is familiar with the talents of rookie WR Laviska Shenault Jr. and what he can do for an offense from their time playing against each other in college. 'Every time he touched the ball you just got nervous because you know he could break it,' Minshew said.

Footballguys view: These guys both played in the Pac-12, Minshew for Washington State and Shenault for Colorado. Shenault is a rare athlete who has strength, speed, body control and the versatility to line up anywhere in the formation...even in the backfield as a running back or Wildcat quarterback. The rookie from CU just needs to stay healthy in order to be productive. We love him in dynasty leagues but in re-draft leagues he's more of an end-of-the-bench player at this time.

Jaguars | Collin Johnson a huge target    Thu May 28, 10:01 AM

Jacksonville Jaguars fifth-round pick WR Collin Johnson is a 6-foot-6, 222-pound target that thrived in the red zone. '(The Jaguars) mentioned mismatching my height with stuff and things like that, but obviously you can't teach height,' Johnson said. 'You know I'm thankful to be as tall as I am, but also I feel like a part of my game that I'm really good at is my route running, so I feel like I have more than just being a tall receiver,' Johnson said.

Footballguys view: Johnson is a big-bodied receiver who knows how to use his frame to box out smaller defenders. He knows how to manipulate defenders based on the coverage look and Johnson has great 'my ball' mentality when the pass is coming in. Johnson missed six games as a senior due to a hamstring injury and he doesn't get a ton of separation in his routes. We like monitoring him in dynasty formats.

Jaguars | Offense to be tailored to Gardner Minshew    Tue May 26, 07:33 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Gardner Minshew will have the offense tailored to him in 2020, according to offensive coordinator Jay Gruden. 'It's my job to make it mesh, to take on the personality of our quarterback - and for him to understand what we're trying to get accomplished on play-to-play, game-to-game, week-to-week basis is going to be critical,' Gruden said. ... 'Now, it's just a matter of him getting some general knowledge of our offense and me figuring out what he likes, what he doesn't like - what makes him tick - and go from there.'

Footballguys view: The Jaguars have to do what they can to get the best out of Minshew. They brought in Mike Glennon, but he's not real threat to the starting position. The dirty secret in the NFL is that it's all about fit. Gruden is a seasoned coach who knows that and will work to get the best out of his young quarterback.

Jaguars | DJ Chark Jr.'s potential untapped?    Tue May 26, 03:01 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars WR DJ Chark Jr. can do a little more due to his size, speed and ability to get out of breaks, according to offensive coordinator Jay Gruden Tuesday, May 26. Gruden called Chark an excellent physical specimen and said the third-year receiver will move around and play out of the slot some in 2020.

Footballguys view: Chark has shown a high level of ability as a pro. He's coming off a career-high 73-catch, 1,008 yards and eight touchdowns in 2019. That made him the no.17 wide receiver in standard-scoring leagues last year. He's got a strong connection with QB Garnder Minshew and could outperform his current ADP of WR28 (6.05) in 12-team leagues.

Jaguars | Jacksonville set at QB?    Fri May 15, 02:36 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone on Friday, May 15, was asked in a radio interview if there was any interest in the team signing free agent QB Cam Newton. Marrone didn't address that specific question, but did say he believes the team is fairly well set at the position. 'Right now we have four quarterbacks, so we're pretty much done,' Marrone said. 'If there's any opportunity, we constantly talk about the players that are out there. . . . We're always looking to improve and we're looking to get the right pieces to help us.'

Footballguys view: Gardner Minshew is their starter and Mike Glennon is their veteran backup. The team is unlikely to add another quarterback to the room at this time. Minshew showed flashes as a rookie in 2019 but his game was far from consistent.

Jaguars | More pocket for Gardner Minshew?    Fri May 15, 01:01 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Gardner Minshew will be working on making more plays from the pocket, according to head coach Doug Marrone. The priorities will be developing rhythm and reads and deciphering coverage. Marrone added they don't want to discourage Minshew from using his creativity, but they want him to make good decisions.

Footballguys view: Keeping Minshew in the pocket means they better have options for him right away as a passer. He was under a lot of pressure last year and thus would scramble around looking to make a play with his arm. Minshew is their guy as they've yet added a guy like Cam Newton to take the starting job and in fact signed perennial backup Mike Glennon to be the guy behind the second-year quarterback. We'll see if the added weapons and emphasis on staying in the pocket helps Minshew play more consistently in 2020.

Jaguars | Jay Gruden's presence big for Tyler Eifert    Thu May 14, 10:38 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Tyler Eifert suggested during an interview with the team's website Thursday, May 14, that the presence of new offensive coordinator Jay Gruden was 'a big factor' why he chose to sign with the team in free agency.

Footballguys view: If healthy, Eifert can be a force on the field...but he's rarely been healthy. He scored 13 touchdowns way back in 2015 but has failed to stay durable ever since. Eifert gets a fresh start with the Jaguars this year and Gruden knows his game well from their days together with the Bengals.

Jaguars | Chris Thompson officially joins Jaguars    Wed May 13, 05:32 PM

Updating a previous report, free-agent RB Chris Thompson (Redskins) officially signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars Wednesday, May 13. Official terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Thompson is going to keep doing what he does best -- catching passes out of the backfield. Leonard Fournette is still in Jacksonville and he's still the lead back for the team. Thompson will compete with Ryquell Armstead to be the backup to Fournette. If healthy, Thompson could catch around 30 passes in a reserve role.

Jaguars | Davon Hamilton to see action    Wed May 13, 08:52 AM

Jacksonville Jaguars third-round pick DT Davon Hamilton is expected to be in the rotation with DTs Abry Jones and Taven Bryan, according to general manager David Caldwell. Hamilton is a big run stuffer, but they believe he has potential to rush the passer.

Jaguars | Ryquell Armstead showed promise in passing game    Tue May 12, 07:23 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars RB Ryquell Armstead averaged 10.29 yards per reception on 14 catches last year. No rookie back with at least 10 catches had a higher average.

Footballguys view: Armstead is a talented running back who is just waiting for an opportunity to do more. With Leonard Fournette still in town, Armstead will work as his primary backup once again. If Fournette goes down with an injury, Armstead has three-down ability.

Jaguars | Mike Glennon officially signs    Tue May 12, 05:09 PM

Updating a previous story, free-agent QB Mike Glennon (Raiders) officially signed an undisclosed deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars Tuesday, May 12.

Footballguys view: Glennon is a seasoned backup with plenty of starting experience if the Jaguars need him. This is a clear sign they are 'all in' on Gardner Minshew as their starting quarterback...for this year at least. Some felt the Jaguars would be a landing spot for Cam Newton where he could have the starting job. That's not the case now as it seems unlikely Jacksonville would add Newton after signing Glennon. Instead, Minshew will get this year to prove he can be the starter for the future. He showed flashes last year as a rookie but 'Minshew Mania' was not without plenty of rough patches.

Jaguars | Leonard Fournette a YAC monster    Fri May 8, 01:30 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars RB Leonard Fournette ranked fourth among running backs in 2019 with an average of 2.99 yards after contact per attempt.

Footballguys view: Fournette is going to have a smaller role in the passing game with the arrival of Chris Thompson and it's not entirely clear that he'll start and end the season with the team. Maybe they can use this stat as a selling point to a potential buyer.

Jaguars | Mike Glennon heads to Duval    Fri May 8, 11:53 AM

Free-agent QB Mike Glennon (Raiders) agreed to terms with the Jacksonville Jaguars, a source said Friday, May 8. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The Jaguars aren't going to have a shot in the arm off of the bench at quarterback if Gardner Minshew doesn't regain his 2019 first half form. They should be considered the favorites to get the #1 pick in 2021.

Link to story

Jaguars | Leonard Fournette staying put    Wed May 6, 10:18 AM

Jacksonville Jaguars RB Leonard Fournette will be a big part of the offense in 2020, according to general manager David Caldwell. Fournette was involved in trade talks in the offseason.

Footballguys view: The Jaguars could find no takers for Fournette on the trade block. He stays now and should be utilized early and often as a runner and receiver out of the backfield. However, he is unlikely to get the total number of carries and targets that he had last year due to additions like Chris Thompson to the backfield. He was the No.13 running back (standard-scoring leagues) last year with a heavy workload, so expect that number to dip to more low-end RB2 production for Fantasy GMs.

Jaguars | No option for Leonard Fournette    Fri May 1, 06:20 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars RB Leonard Fournette will not have his fifth-year option picked up this offseason, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Jaguars wanted to trade him away during the draft, so it's no surprise they don't pick up his fifth-year option. Fournette is in the last year of his contract in 2020 and will be an unrestricted free agent in 2021. This is his last year with the team most likely and there's still no guarantee he makes it to Week 1 with the team if someone needs a back later.

Free-agent RB Chris Thompson (Redskins) agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars Friday, May 1, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Thompson is reunited with Jags OC Jay Gruden who was his coach in Washington. He's a pass-catching threat who should take third-down duties away from Leonard Fournette. Thompson has some flex appeal in PPR leagues due to his skill set and assumed role with the Jaguars.

Jaguars | Confidence in Gardner Minshew?    Fri May 1, 12:39 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Gardner Minshew on Friday, May 1, received a semi vote of confidence from head coach Doug Marrone, who also left the door open to the team adding a quarterback as well. 'Ya, he's our QB, there's no doubt about it,' Marrone said in an interview on Good Morning Football. '... But one of the things that we're doing, we're still looking to to make sure were upgraded at each position. There are some veterans out there that we might look at to bring in.'

Footballguys view: The team gave Minshew a vote of confidence when they traded Nick Foles away to the Bears earlier this year. We'll see if they nab Andy Dalton now that he's on the open market, but it's looking like Minshew will be their starter to open the regular season.

Jaguars | Andy Dalton on option for JAX?    Thu Apr 30, 11:00 AM

Free-agent QB Andy Dalton (Bengals) could be an option for the Jacksonville Jaguars and offensive coordinator Jay Gruden.

Footballguys view: Gruden was Dalton's former coach with the Bengals, so that's why many are speculating a reunion may be in the near future. The Jaguars have Garnder Minshew as their starter as they traded away Nick Foles earlier this year. Dalton could come in to give them veteran depth at least if not beat out Minshew for the top spot. We'll see if they make a move or stay put with what they have in place.

Jaguars | Laviska Shenault Jr. will move around    Tue Apr 28, 01:14 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars rookie WR Laviska Shenault Jr., a second-round draft choice, is expected to play an immediate role within the Jacksonville offense. Jaguars director of college scouting Mark Ellenz said Shenault is 'very athletic and he can run really well -- especially for his size.' Ellenz added Shenault is strong, has a lot of ability in running after the catch and is highly competitive. Jaguars receivers coach Keenan McCardell called his new weapon a 'Swiss Army knife' as Shenault is able to play all over the field. 'I like the fact that he's been moved around and he has a really good football IQ,' McCardell said.

Footballguys view: Shenault should move around! First, he's great at multiple positions. Second, that's how he was used in college. Finally, defenses are going to have a hard time matching up with him due to his versatility. Shenault reminds some in the scouting community of A.J. Brown (Titans) because of his strength after the catch. The rookie from Colorado can line up wide, in the slot or even as a receiver out of the backfield.
