Panthers | Carolina signs 5 draft picks    Thu May 13, 12:41 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Chuba Hubbard, CB Keith Taylor Jr., OL Deonte Brown, WR Shi Smith and LS Thomas Fletcher on Thursday, May 13, signed their four-year rookie contracts.

Footballguys view: Hubbard is a player we are excited about, and he'll work to be the primary backup to Christian McCaffrey in 2021. The rookie running back from Oklahoma State knows how to stick his foot in the ground and go! He's a hard-charging running back and there's little wasted motion (or nuance) to what Hubbard does. If he wins the no.2 job, then Hubbard will be a high-value handcuff for Fantasy GMs. Smith is a speedy receiver who can make crazy catches. We'll monitor him in deep dynasty formats.

Panthers | Carolina signs two players    Mon May 10, 04:57 PM

Undrafted free-agent RB Spencer Brown (Alabama-Birmingham) and LB Paddy Fisher (Northwestern) signed with the Carolina Panthers Monday, May 10. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Brown is a smooth running back who makes crisp cuts to find rushing lanes. He's stout as a runner and has the leg drive to run through arm tackles. He wasn't used as much as a receiver as he could have been but three-down ability is there. Brown is not overly fast, but we'll still monitor him in super deep dynasty formats.

Panthers | Kevin Thomson to try out    Sun May 9, 12:04 PM

Undrafted free-agent QB Kevin Thomson (Sacramento State) is scheduled to participate in the Carolina Panthers rookie minicamp next week on a tryout basis, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Thomson could have stayed in college with Washington for what would have been his eighth season of eligibility. That is not a typo. Originally starting his college career at UNLV in 2014, Thomson was hurt and transferred to Sacramento State where he became an FCS All-American. He then transferred to Washington where he competed for playing time but another injury knocked him out of the final four games of the year. For those keeping score at home, that's six seasons, five coaching staffs and three universities. Thomson is a long-shot, dual-threat quarterback but he certainly did not give up on his dream of playing in the NFL.

Panthers | Chuba Hubbard could land backup gig    Sat May 8, 11:07 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Chuba Hubbard 'is a good bet to displace' RB Rodney Smith and Reggie Bonnafon RB as the primary backup to RB Christian McCaffrey in 2021, according to Vinnie Iyer of SportingNews.com.

Footballguys view: That sounds about right. The Panthers don't have much behind McCaffrey with Mike Davis (Falcons) moving on in free agency. Hubbard is a hard-charging running back who wastes little motion with the ball. He did have a problem with fumbling in college, so that will have to be cleaned up before he's trusted as the no.2 back on the depth chart. Hubbard could have handcuff value if he wins that spot in training camp.

Panthers | Dan Morgan hired as assistant GM    Sat May 8, 12:46 PM

Buffalo Bills team executive Dan Morgan on Saturday, May 8, was hired as the Carolina Panthers' assistant general manager.

Footballguys view: Morgan is back with the Panthers, this time in the front office. A first-round pick in the 2001 NFL draft, Morgan played with the Panthers through the 2007 season. After retiring, Morgan spent almost seven years as the Director of Pro Personnel for the Seahawks. In Seattle, he worked with new Panthers GM Scott Fitterer. Morgan has spent the last three years with the Buffalo Bills.

Panthers | Terrace Marshall became priority pick    Sat May 8, 12:25 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Terrace Marshall was moved up the team's draft board and selected with the 59th-overall pick in the second round April 30 after the Panthers reportedly received a tip that the rival New Orleans Saints were going to select Marshall with the 60th-overall selection.

Footballguys view: It would not have been a surprise to see Marshall go in the first round, so the Panthers get a value pick here with the LSU wide receiver. Marshall has a nice size/speed combination and can run by defenders on the outside. His frame gives him a large target for his quarterback and he knows how to use it to box out cornerbacks tasked with covering him. The Panthers have a strong group of wide receivers and it will be interesting to see how they mix in Marshall as a rookie.

Panthers | Chuba Hubbard agrees on rookie deal    Thu May 6, 12:55 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Chuba Hubbard has agreed to terms on his four-year contract with the team, the Panthers announced Thursday, May. 6. The full terms of the deal were not available.

Footballguys view: Hubbard is an exciting rookie running back who will work to earn a spot as perhaps the primary backup to Christian McCaffrey in 2021. At Oklahoma State, Hubbard showed off a hard-charging style and can stick his foot in the ground to change direction in a hurry. He's not a pile-pusher, but Hubbard is not afraid to run between the tackles. Hubbard needs to work on ball security if he wants to earn the trust of the Panthers coaching staff. Monitor his progress in dynasty formats and consider him a handcuff to McCaffrey is he wins the no.2 job.

Panthers | D.J. Moore to wait for deal    Thu May 6, 12:19 PM

Carolina Panthers WR D.J. Moore had his fifth-year contract option picked up in April, but a long-term deal with the team isn't expected this offseason, according to Alaina Getzenberg of the Charlotte Observer.

Footballguys view: Moore is scheduled to make around $11 million this year. He's gone back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons and is looking to make it three in a row this season. Moore should be a favorite target of QB Sam Darnold and is a WR2 with upside for Fantasy GMs in 2021.

Panthers | Chuba Hubbard lands in Carolina    Sat May 1, 01:18 PM

Oklahoma State RB Chuba Hubbard on Saturday, May 1, was selected by the Carolina Panthers in the fourth round (126th overall pick) of the NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Hubbard was an exciting college football running back. He's a hard-charging back who can stick his foot in the ground and bounce. Hubbard can make defenders look silly in the open field with his moves and is creative when stacking moves. He's struggled with fumbles (7) over the last two years and was banged up in 2020. Hubbard will work to establish himself as a trusted reserve behind Christian McCaffrey.

Panthers | Tommy Tremble finds home in Carolina    Fri Apr 30, 10:41 PM

Notre Dame TE Tommy Tremble was selected by the Carolina Panthers with the 83rd overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Tremble is a versatile player who can play H-back, tight end or even line up in the backfield as a fullback. He's a standout player because of his blocking ability and his speed. We'll see him try to work his way up the depth chart with the Panthers.

Carolina Panthers QB Sam Darnold had his fifth-year option exercised Friday, April 30.

Panthers | Teddy Bridgewater sent to Denver for late pick    Wed Apr 28, 02:02 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Teddy Bridgewater was traded to the Denver Broncos in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick Wednesday, April 28. As part of the deal, the Panthers will pay Bridgewater $7 million this year and the Broncos will pay him $3 million.

Footballguys view: The Panthers are moving on and everybody knew that. They traded for Sam Darnold and he will be their starter in 2021. Bridgewater was below average as their starter last year and now has a new home.

Panthers | Will Grier may be on bubble    Sun Apr 25, 02:13 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Will Grier may be on the roster bubble if the team selects a quarterback during the 2021 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Grier was a third-round pick in 2019 and has seen the field as a starter a couple of times...and the results weren't great. The Panthers have traded for Sam Darnold to be their starter, and they'll likely be moving on from Teddy Bridgewater here pretty soon. Grier is the no.2 or no.3 quarterback for the Panthers, but to be a backup he needs to be better.

Panthers | No decision on Sam Darnold's option    Fri Apr 23, 08:29 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Sam Darnold has a fifth-year option in his contract, but general manager Scott Fitterer said the team will wait until after the 2021 NFL Draft to decide if they will exercise the option.

Footballguys view: The Panthers have time to make the decision. We'll see who falls to them in the first round as there are rumblings they could still be in the quarterback market. That seems a bit much provided they traded for Darnold but in the NFL you never know.

Panthers | Carolina wouldn't mind trading down    Fri Apr 23, 12:48 PM

Carolina Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer said Friday, April 23, in a pre-draft news conference that he has spoken with at least five teams about trading down from the eighth overall pick in the first round and acquiring more picks. If the Panthers do trade down, though, it won't be far as Fitterer said he feels there's a strong drop off after the first 15 to 19 players in the draft.

Footballguys view: The Panthers have their quarterback in Sam Darnold, so perhaps if one falls to them they'd find teams willing to give up future assets to move up. It's always good to be flexible, so the Panthers could move down from no.8 overall and still find what they need in the first round.

Ohio State QB Justin Fields will have representatives of the Carolina Panthers watching his pro day Wednesday, April 14, according to a source.

Panthers | Interest high in Teddy Bridgewater    Thu Apr 8, 01:28 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Teddy Bridgewater has a a contract that isn't trade friendly, but he could be willing to take a pay cut as multiple teams are interested in the veteran quarterback, according to an NFL Network report Thursday, April 8.

Footballguys view: Bridgewater could be a bridge quarterback for a team in need or a team that selects a young passer. Or a team like the Broncos could bring him in for veteran competition. One thing is clear, Bridgwater is not getting moved without restructuring his deal...or the Panthers could pay part of his contract to get rid of him.

Panthers | Teddy Bridgewater allowed to look around    Tue Apr 6, 09:20 AM

Carolina Panthers QB Teddy Bridgewater has been given permission to seek a trade to another team, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. In fact, this was the plan for the Panthers - although they originally wanted to trade for Deshaun Watson instead of Sam Darnold. Now, Darnold is going to be the starter and Bridgewater will be playing somewhere else. A team like the Broncos could bring him in to compete with last year's starter Drew Lock.

Panthers | Carolina checked in on Deshaun Watson    Mon Apr 5, 05:53 PM

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson received trade interest from the Carolina Panthers, but the Panthers decided to acquire QB Sam Darnold, according to sources.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. Watson's legal situation is going to have teams pumping the brakes on a potential trade. Rather than wait around for Lord knows how long, the Panthers decided to make a move for Darnold.

Panthers | Teddy Bridgewater may be on block    Mon Apr 5, 04:28 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Teddy Bridgewater likely will be shopped to other teams after the Panthers acquired QB Sam Darnold. They could also consider keeping him on a restructured contract.

Footballguys view: That's what is most likely now that the team has dealt for Sam Darnold. It's difficult to say that Darnold is a huge upgrade over Bridgewater, but with better coaching than he received from Adam Gase we could see Darnold play at a high level. That's what happened to Ryan Tannehill after he was able to get away from Gase and thrive with the Titans.

Panthers | Sam Darnold's option to be picked up    Mon Apr 5, 04:19 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Sam Darnold will have his fifth-year option exercised this offseason, according to a source.

Footballguys view: That's the reports after the trade. This way the Panthers have control of Darnold through the 2022 season. If he plays well, we're sure the team would try to sign him to a long-term deal.

Panthers | Carolina acquires Sam Darnold    Mon Apr 5, 04:01 PM

New York Jets QB Sam Darnold was acquired by the Carolina Panthers Monday, April 5, in exchange for a 2021 sixth-round draft choice, a 2022 second-round draft choice and a 2022 fourth-round draft choice.

Footballguys view: The Panthers are getting a quarterback who could turn things around post Adam Gase (see Ryan Tannehill) and they're not giving up that much for him. Darnold gives the team a starter with experience who could be an upgrade over Teddy Bridgewater. The Panthers wanted Deshaun Watson (Texans) but that's no longer the case with the legal issues around him. Darnold gives them a cheap option with upside. This likely takes quarterback off the board with the no.8 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft.
