Chiefs | Alex Okafor agrees to restructured deal    Mon Aug 10, 02:01 PM

Kansas City Chiefs DE Alex Okafor recently agreed to a restructured contract that lowers the $7.9 million he was due in 2020 to a maximum of $4.96 million this season. He will also reportedly receive $860,000 in per-game roster bonuses and another $2 million in incentives.

Footballguys view: Okafor, who initially agreed to a contract that ran through the end of 2021, will also be allowed to hit the open market as a free agent at the end of the season as well. He will continue to play as a reserve player on the defensive line for the Chiefs in 2020.

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs RB Damien Williams opted out of the 2020 season because his mother has been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer.

Footballguys view: Williams chose to opt out for the 2020 season and the Chiefs move forward with rookie RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire as their starter. With Williams out, Edwards-Helaire is moving up draft boards and should be a late first-round pick in any format.

Chiefs | Damien Williams will not play in 2020    Wed Jul 29, 04:52 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Damien Williams has decided to opt out of the 2020 season.

Footballguys view: Williams was set to be a big part of what the Chiefs do at the running back position. Now, rookie first-round pick Clyde Edwards-Helaire will be the primary back for the Chiefs and won't be splitting time with Williams. Fantasy GMs have moved the needle already, and Edwards-Helaire should be a first round pick in every draft from here on out.

Kansas City Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill has gained at least 40 yards on 25 receptions since entering the league in 2016. The total is five more than any other player over that span.

Footballguys view: Hill is one of the best players in the NFL and in fantasy football. The Chiefs should continue to make explosive plays regularly with Hill gathering in most of those they do. Hill has a current ADP of WR3 (1.12) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Chiefs | Kelechi Osemele headed to Kansas City    Sat Jul 25, 09:36 PM

Free-agent OG Kelechi Osemele (Jets) has agreed to a one-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs worth up to $2 million, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs have plenty of good in-house options to replace Laurent Duvernay-Tardif such as Mike Remmers or Martinas Rankin, and now they have added a player who was once a mauler and one of the best in the game. Osemele will be hoping to avoid the injury bug that derailed his career with the Jets.

Chiefs | Clyde Edwards-Helaire deal nearly complete    Mon Jul 20, 10:27 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire reportedly reached a verbal agreement on a four-year contract Monday, July 20. The deal is pending the completion of a physical and financial terms of the contract were not immediately disclosed.

Footballguys view: Edwards-Helaire is one of the most well-rounded running backs to come into the league this year. He can thrive as a runner with his quickness, speed and big-play ability. Those same traits also help him as a receiver out of the backfield. Fantasy GMs are expecting a lot from the rookie as he has a current ADP of RB15 (2.11) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Chiefs | KC agrees to terms with five draft picks    Mon Jul 20, 04:58 PM

Kansas City Chiefs second-round draft choice LB Willie Gay, third-round draft choice OT Lucas Niang, fourth-round draft choice CB L'Jarius Sneed, fifth-round draft choice DE Michael Danna and seventh-round draft choice CB Thakarius Keyes agreed to terms on four-year contracts with the Chiefs Monday, July 20, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Gay could start right away in a weak side linebacker role that will allow him to seek and destroy the way he did in college. He's an underrated dynasty IDP commodity.

Chiefs | Clyde Edwards-Helaire agrees to deal    Mon Jul 20, 04:49 PM

Kansas City Chiefs first-round draft choice RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire agreed to terms on a four-year contract with the Chiefs Monday, July 20, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Edwards-Helaire is already going in the second round of some fantasy drafts. He'll need to stay healthy through camp and prove he is ready to overtake Damien Williams to make that ADP seem wise in hindsight. For now, Williams being available much later appears to be the better pick.

Chiefs | Breeland Speaks not guaranteed spot    Sun Jul 19, 01:30 PM

Kansas City Chiefs DE Breeland Speaks will be given the chance to earn a roster spot during training camp, but his spot is not guaranteed because of the depth the team has at the position.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs traded up in the second round in 2018 for Speaks, who actually fit better in the 4-3 defense they installed last year than the 3-4 they had when he was drafted. He also was suspended for four games for breaking the league's substance abuse policy after being placed on IR with a torn ACL.

Chiefs | Chris Jones lands monster extension    Tue Jul 14, 01:55 PM

Updating an ongoing story, Kansas City Chiefs DT Chris D. Jones has agreed to sign a four-year, $85 million extension, per his agency. The deal includes $60 million guaranteed at signing.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs keep arguably their best defensive player for the long haul in a move that continues the momentum created by the Patrick Mahomes 10-year deal. Jones is as valuable as defensive tackle in IDP leagues and securing his services for multiple years enhances Frank Clark's outlook.

Chiefs | Tyreek Hill sets lofty goals    Mon Jul 13, 03:13 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill said he wants to post 2,000 receiving yards this upcoming season.

Footballguys view: Hill could do it if he plays 16 games, but if Travis Kelce, Mecole Hardman, and Sammy Watkins all play 16 games it will be a lot tougher. Defenses may want to make someone other than Hill beat them and allow a breakout year to Hardman or bounceback year to Watkins. Hill should be one of the first four wide receivers off of the board in any event.

Chiefs | Shea Patterson let go    Fri Jul 10, 05:11 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Shea Patterson was waived Friday, July 10, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Patterson was an immense disappointment in college but some team might try to groom him as a practice squad quarterback with the expansion of the unit under the new CBA.

Chiefs | Matt Moore staying in KC    Fri Jul 10, 01:57 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Moore on Friday, July 10, agreed to the terms of a one-year contract to remain with the team.

Footballguys view: Moore was serviceable in two starts and a finish in place of Patrick Mahomes, and even led the Chiefs to a victory over the Vikings. Chad Henne may end up available to a quarterback needy team in the wake of this move.

Chiefs | Andy Reid not close to done    Wed Jul 8, 11:24 AM

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, 62, said he's not close to retiring soon.

Footballguys view: Reid still has plenty of coaching left to do. With the Chiefs wrapping up QB Patrick Mahomes for the next decade-plus, Reid's team is in a championship window. We'll see the parts around Mahomes change over time but Reid's system is tried and true.

Chiefs | Patrick Mahomes agrees to huge extension    Mon Jul 6, 03:12 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes agreed to terms on a 10-year contract extension with the Chiefs Monday, July 6, that will run through the 2031 season, according to sources. Financial terms were not disclosed, but the contract with be the richest contract in NFL history.

Footballguys view: When financial details are released, prepare to be knocked off your socks. Mahomes is only 24-years old and the Chiefs are in a Super Bowl window so long as he's healthy. He has put up historic numbers in just two years of starting for the Chiefs and is the face of the NFL. Expect Mahomes to keep the Chiefs in contention for years to come.

Chiefs | Coach expects big jump from Damien Williams    Sun Jul 5, 01:36 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Damien Williams has a chance to make a big jump in production this season because of the improvements he is making this offseason, according to running backs coach Deland McCullough.

Footballguys view: Williams is being undersold in drafts because the team took Clyde Edwards-Helaire in the first round. In a typical year, Edwards-Helaire would already be ramped up in the scheme and his conditioning would be tested, but this year the rookies will have a steep hill to climb to be ready to play a big role to open the season.

Chiefs | Tyrann Mathieu owns the slot    Thu Jul 2, 09:35 PM

Kansas City Chiefs S Tyrann Mathieu allowed a passer rating of 70.0 in the slot in 2019 - the third-best mark of any player with at least 200 snaps inside - according to Pro Football Focus.

Footballguys view: Mathieu has been a massive impact addition to the Chiefs defense and part of the reason he and the rest of the team got rings at the end of the 2019 season. He remains a solid #2 safety/defensive back option in IDP leagues.

Chiefs | Patrick Mahomes made big throws in 2019    Thu Jul 2, 03:42 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes completed 15 passes of at least 40 yards during the 2019 season, which ranked second among quarterbacks.

Footballguys view: Mahomes would have led this category if he had played the whole season, and he should be #1 this year. Keep this in mind if your fantasy scoring system rewards long touchdowns with bonus points.

Chiefs | Mecole Hardman a deep threat last season    Wed Jul 1, 04:06 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Mecole Hardman posted five touchdowns of at least 25 yards last season, which was tied for most in the NFL.

Footballguys view: Hardman's game is all about speed, speed and more speed. The team is going to keep using him as a deep threat as the no.3 receiver behind Tyreek Hill and Sammy Watkins. Hardman is a WR5 with upside for Fantasy GMs. He could thrive if thrust into a larger role.

Chiefs | Chris Jones seeking huge payday    Tue Jun 30, 10:35 PM

Kansas City Chiefs DL Chris Jones has 'always viewed himself as a $20 million-plus' player and intends to seek that much in a contract extension, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo. Jones suggested via social media that he would be willing to hold out much like Le'Veon Bell did in 2018 if Kansas City fails to meet his asking price.

Kansas City Chiefs OG Andrew Wylie is expected to be a candidate for the starting left guard job during training camp.

Chiefs | Byron Pringle may see bigger role    Sun Jun 28, 04:05 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Byron Pringle may receive more snaps on offense and as a return specialist this upcoming season, in the opinion of ChiefsWire's Charles Goldman.

Footballguys view: That could very well be the case, but we doubt Pringle has much of a fantasy impact this season unless someone is injured above him on the depth chart. He will compete with Demarcus Robinson for the no.4 spot behind Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins and Mecole Hardman. Pringle did flash a bit last year in spot duty, so keep him on your waiver wire speed dial.

Chiefs | Patrick Mahomes can strike from anywhere    Mon Jun 22, 09:14 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has thrown for 30 touchdowns outside the red zone since 2018 - the most by any quarterback in the league over that span.

Footballguys view: Mahomes ability to extend plays and make throws from odd platforms that other quarterbacks wouldn't try along with the talent and speed he has in his offense make this easier for him than most quarterbacks. Keep this in mind when setting up your board in leagues that reward long touchdowns with bonus points.

Chiefs | Yasir Durant may move inside    Mon Jun 22, 07:06 PM

Kansas City Chiefs OT Yasir Durant may receive some work at offensive guard during training camp.

Footballguys view: Durant played left tackle at Missouri and was dependable and durable, but he'll need to prove he has the quickness and athleticism to hang in the NFL. Guard should be an easier ramp-up for the UDFA than tackle.

Chiefs | Two safeties may compete for spot    Sun Jun 21, 02:33 PM

Kansas City Chiefs S Rodney Clemons and S Andrew Soroh may compete for one roster spot during training camp if S Juan Thornhill (knee) has to start the regular season on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs hope Thornhill will be ready, but as a long term piece and on a team that is looking to go back to the Super Bowl, they won't risk his health and availability later in the season to rush him back to the field.

Chiefs | Patrick Mahomes lit it up over the middle    Mon Jun 15, 09:16 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes posted a passer rating of 137.4 on throws over the middle of the field in 2019, according to Inside Edge NFL.

Footballguys view: Mahomes is fantastic no matter where he's throwing on the field. He can work the underneath routes over the middle because of guys like TE Travis Kelce. He's the best quarterback in the game and should continue to play at a high level for years to come.

Chiefs | Patrick Mahomes outstanding on deep passes    Mon Jun 15, 05:37 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes recorded 1,141 yards, 14 touchdowns and two interceptions on passes of traveled at least 20 yards during the 2019 regular season and postseason.

Footballguys view: Mahomes is one of the best at firing passes deep down the field. Part of that success is due to the high-quality targets like Tyreek Hill but a large part is just the skill set he has. Mahomes has great anticipation as a thrower and does a good job placing passes correctly and in stride to maximize yards after the catch. He's the best quarterback in the game, and it's a joy to watch Mahomes play. We look forward to his QB1 production for Fantasy GMs once again in 2020.

Chiefs | Travis Kelce made most of catches    Fri Jun 12, 06:59 PM

Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce caught 71 passes that resulted in either a first down or a touchdown during the 2019 season, which ranked first among tight ends.

Footballguys view: Kelce is still the clear #1 tight end and will cost you a second round pick if you want him. George Kittle was closing in before getting hurt last year and should go soon after Kelce in fantasy drafts.

Chiefs | Mecole Hardman excelled in slot    Fri Jun 12, 02:52 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Mecole Hardman had six receiving touchdowns from the slot in 2019 which tied for the most in the league, according to Pro Football Focus data.

Footballguys view: Hardman is still relatively new to the wide receiver position, so he has plenty of room for his game to grow. The Chiefs brought back Demarcus Robinson in free agency and restructured Sammy Watkins deal to keep him, so Hardman's redraft value could be limited. He is still an excellent best ball pick at ADP and his dynasty value is sure to take off in the next year or two.

Chiefs | Travis Kelce no stranger to big plays    Tue Jun 9, 09:02 PM

Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce has gained at least 15 yards on 100 plays since 2017 - 31 more than any other tight end over that span - according to Pro Football Focus.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs know how to use Kelce at his best. These numbers and big plays will continue as the team brought back 10-of-11 starters from the offense that won the Super Bowl.

Chiefs | Felton Davis waived    Fri Jun 5, 05:44 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Felton Davis (undisclosed) was waived Friday, June 5, with a Non-Football Injury designation.

Footballguys view: Davis is a big receiver with good hands, but he lacks speed or suddenness. The Chiefs signed six UDFA receivers after the draft, which created a roster squeeze at the position that resulted in Davis's release to make room for safety Andrew Soroh. He could catch on elsewhere as we get closer to training camp.

Chiefs | Andrew Soroh back with Chiefs    Fri Jun 5, 12:41 PM

Free agent S Andrew Soroh (XFL) on Friday, June 5, agreed to a deal to re-sign with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Footballguys view: Soroh was with the Chiefs last summer as an undrafted free agent, but was let go at the final cutdown date. He ended up being a sixth round pick by the New York Guardians in the XFL defensive back draft and recording 20 tackles and an interception. His familiarity with the Chiefs system and safety/linebacker versatility could give him an outside shot to make the team.

Chiefs | Patrick Mahomes off to record start    Thu Jun 4, 09:46 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes' 93.7 Pro Football Focus grade is the highest of any quarterback over their first three seasons in the NFL.

Footballguys view: Mahomes might just be getting started. An injury slowed him down last year, but the team is returning their entire wide receiver group intact from 2019 and he added Clyde Edwards-Helaire, the best receiving back in the draft. Mahomes reportedly said "Clyde" when asked who he wanted the team to take in the first round. Even though waiting at quarterback is in vogue in fantasy drafts, Mahomes can still be a great pick at ADP if he returns to 2018 statistical form.

Chiefs | Tyreek Hill practicing yoga    Wed Jun 3, 10:21 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill told reporters last month he is doing yoga twice a week in an effort to open up his hips and glutes more.

Footballguys view: Hill is fast and basically teleports down the field. Doing yoga is a common practice among NFL receivers, and this will only help Hill play better in 2020.

Chiefs | Travis Kelce always a friendly target    Mon Jun 1, 09:52 PM

Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce has caught no fewer than 83.5 percent of his catchable targets over the last five seasons, and quarterbacks have recorded a passer rating no worse than 105.8 over that stretch. In 2019, he hauled in 84.3 percent of his 115 catchable targets and his quarterbacks recorded a 112.2 passer rating when targeting him.

Footballguys view: Kelce is a dominant force and that's going to continue in 2020. He is consistent and can take over a game. Kelce is difficult to match up with because he's too fast for linebackers and too big for safeties to cover.
