Eagles | Philly eyeing Deshaun Watson    Fri Apr 9, 12:45 PM

If Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson can appropriately settle his current lawsuit and legal problems, the Philadelphia Eagles would be interested in pursuing a trade, according to a a league source Friday, April 9.

Footballguys view: Many teams are going to be interested in Watson if his legal issues are cleared up. The Eagles will have to get in line with a team like the Broncos if that's the case. If they can't get Watson, the Eagles are ready to give second-year quarterback Jalen Hurts the opportunity to prove he can be a franchise guy.

Panthers | Carolina checked in on Deshaun Watson    Mon Apr 5, 05:53 PM

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson received trade interest from the Carolina Panthers, but the Panthers decided to acquire QB Sam Darnold, according to sources.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. Watson's legal situation is going to have teams pumping the brakes on a potential trade. Rather than wait around for Lord knows how long, the Panthers decided to make a move for Darnold.

Texans | Coach committed to Deshaun Watson    Thu Mar 11, 03:23 PM

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson continues to seek a trade, but head coach David Culley said the team is committed to having Watson as their starting quarterback.

Footballguys view: The Texans are not budging on their stance that Watson is not available via trade. Watson is not budging on his stance that he's done playing for the Texans. Some think Watson could be dealt around the 2021 NFL draft, but this thing could take until August...or maybe even to 2022...to come to a conclusion.

Texans | Financial implications of potential Deshaun Watson holdout    Sat Feb 27, 04:19 PM

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson would lose a total of $20.213 million if he holds out for the entirety of the 2021 NFL season, including fines for skipping offseason programs, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk Saturday, Feb. 27.

Footballguys view: Watson has the control here, even though it would cost him greatly to miss the 2021 season. He wants out of Houston, but the Texans have insisted they are not trading him. This situation is ugly and could last through the draft and up to the start of the regular season.

Texans | Deshaun Watson resolution not near    Fri Feb 26, 09:58 AM

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson is still 'off limits' as the Texans are informing interested teams.

Footballguys view: Fans need to have patience with the Watson situation. Similar to the 'Bonnie Situation' this is a delicate procedure that needs to handled with care. The Texans don't view free agency or the start of the NFL draft as a deadline for this situation.

Texans | Deshaun Watson still wants trade    Thu Feb 25, 03:14 PM

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson met with head coach David Culley last week and indicated that he has not changed his mind about being traded, according to sources. Watson told Culley that he has no intention to play for the Texans again.

Footballguys view: The Texans still think they can work things out with Watson. This is an ugly situation, and the team is insisting they have no plans to trade the superstar quarterback. Watson has his heels dug in and he wants to be traded. We imagine he will get dealt, with the Broncos being the favorite landing spot at this time, but it could take some time to put together the deal.

Footballguys view: Watson has great touch and accuracy when throwing down the field. He doesn't hesitate to attack a defense and he knows how to lead his receivers in stride so they can gain more yards after the big throw.

Panthers | CAR clearing space for Deshaun Watson?    Sat Feb 20, 11:47 AM

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson is a target of the Carolina Panthers, who are clearing salary cap space to attempt to trade for him, according to sources. The Panthers cleared $19.9 million this week by releasing four players.

Footballguys view: The Panthers tried to make a move for Matthew Stafford but that did not go through. They will be in on Watson if/when the Texans decide to trade him. We expect serious contenders for Watson to be the Dolphins, Broncos, 49ers, Jets and Panthers.

Dolphins | Miami expected to pursue Deshaun Watson    Fri Feb 19, 04:43 PM

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson is expected to be pursued by the Miami Dolphins if he becomes available in a trade, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Dolphins might be the front-runners for Watson's services. They'll face competition if/when Watson is on the trade block from teams like the 49ers or Broncos. Miami has Tua Tagovailoa, and that's a better asset than the Broncos (Drew Lock) or the 49ers (Jimmy Garoppolo) have to get Houston to pull the trigger on a deal. It's going to take some time as the Texans are insisting they will not be trading Watson.

Texans | Deshaun Watson terrific on longer passes    Wed Feb 17, 02:49 PM

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson completed 129 passes of at least 10 yards down the field this season with 26 of those passes being touchdowns. He ranked first in the NFL in both categories.

Footballguys view: The Broncos are now considered the favorites to land Watson if he's traded. This piece of advanced data shows how well he'd work in Pat Shurmur's three-vert system in Denver. The Texans swear up and down they are not trading Watson but everyone has a price and every team has a tipping point. We'll see if the Broncos or another team can pull this off.

Texans | Houston says Deshaun Watson not available    Sun Feb 7, 12:26 PM

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson has asked for a trade, but the Texans continue to tell interested teams that he is not available in a trade, according to sources.

Footballguys view: This is going to be a long and arduous journey. The Texans have to rebuff any requests for their quarterback as that will drive up the price. They're trying to get on better terms with Watson behind the scenes, but that ship seems to have sailed. Watson wants out, and we think there will be enough interest to break the Texans reluctance.

Giants | NYG unlikely to pursue Deshaun Watson    Thu Feb 4, 05:39 PM

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson is not expected to receive any interest from the New York Giants in trade discussions, according to multiple sources.

Footballguys view: The Giants are sticking with Daniel Jones as their starter. It will be his third season in 2021 and the team wants him to take that third-year leap. We'll see if he can play with more consistency and continue to grow as a passer in 2021 which is clearly a make-or-break season for the Giants QB.

Bears | Chicago a longshot for Deshaun Watson?    Thu Feb 4, 12:58 AM

The Chicago Bears could struggle to put together an attractive package for Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson, in the opinion of Chicago Tribune's Brad Biggs, who notes the team doesn't have a high first-round pick this year and is short on young, high-end talent with attractive contracts.

Footballguys view: The Texans may want at least a couple of first-round picks, a couple of second-round picks and a couple of defensive starters. The Bears will have to line up behind several other teams and it seems like they don't have the firepower to get in the mix. Serious contenders for Watson include the Broncos, Dolphins, Jets and Raiders.

Texans | 'Anywhere but Houston' for Deshaun Watson?    Wed Feb 3, 08:12 PM

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson is believed to want to play 'anywhere but Houston,' according to a source Wednesday, Feb. 3. Watson isn't expected to enact his no-trade clause if the Texans were to work out a deal with any other team this offseason.

Footballguys view: The Texans are posturing and indicating that Watson is not on the trade block. It's what they have to do as Watson doesn't want to stay with the team. That's been the buzz for some time now, but the Texans may not move on from him until before the NFL draft. Stay tuned. Teams like the Broncos, Dolphins, Jets and Raiders could be the most interested.

Raiders | Derek Carr expected to be pursued    Tue Feb 2, 07:42 PM

Las Vegas Raiders QB Derek Carr is expected to be a hot commodity in trade talks, according to NFL sources Tuesday, Feb. 2. Dealing Carr could lead to the Raiders pursuing Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson, according to Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Footballguys view: The hot news around the league is that the Raiders are trying to put together a blockbuster deal for Deshaun Watson. They'll have to get in line with a lot of other teams, including the Broncos in their own division, who want the superstar quarterback. The Texans have put it out there that he's not going anywhere but that's likely just posturing. We'll see if the Raiders or any other team can put together a package to get Watson away from Houston.

Patriots | New England likely to pursue Deshaun Watson    Sun Jan 31, 12:08 PM

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson likely will be pursued by the New England Patriots if he is made available in a trade, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Mike Reiss.

Footballguys view: John McClain, long-time NFL writer who covers the Texans, believes it will take two 1s, two 2s, and two young defensive starters -- at least -- to trade for Watson if he is on the block. He also suggests that the Texans may wait until right before the draft to trade Watson as they'll try to convince him to stay. It looks like Watson would hold out before playing for the Texans in 2021. Stay tuned.

Texans | Holdout ahead for Deshaun Watson?    Sat Jan 30, 03:04 PM

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson could hold out the 2021 season if the team refuses to trade him, an unidentified AFC personnel executive said Saturday, Jan. 30.

Footballguys view: There is plenty of buzz that the Texans will absolutely refuse to trade Watson. Of course, that's what the team is putting out there because what else are they going to say? They'll position themselves like they don't want to get rid of Watson, but there's a tipping point for everything. Even if they really don't want to get rid of Watson, there is a price out there they could not say 'no' to. Oh yeah, Watson wants out of there too....so there's that.

Footballguys view: "The player" is verbiage from the Patriots way, which is supposed to indicate a lack of emotional attachment in personnel decisions. In this particular case, a personal touch might have been in order. This is still very much an open-ended situation.

Houston Texans head coach David Culley is expected to appeal to QB Deshaun Watson to remain with the team once his staff is filled out, according to the Houston Chronicle's John McClain, who writes that the team has 'no interest' in trading Watson.

Footballguys view: This may come down to whether Watson is willing to sit out to make his way out of Houston. The Texans may also be playing this one way publicly to pacify fans while they talk their way through a tough position privately.

Panthers | Carolina likely to pursue Deshaun Watson    Thu Jan 28, 05:18 PM

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson is expected to be on the receiving end of a 'strong push' by the Carolina Panthers to acquire him, according to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport.

Footballguys view: Teddy Bridgewater didn't do enough as the team's starter to secure his job for 2021 and beyond. He's a fine starter but lacks the upside and superstar play that Watson would bring to the field. Around 10 teams are interested in Watson, and the Panthers aren't considered a favorite to land his services. We'll see if they can beat the odds.

Dolphins | Deshaun Watson prefers Miami?    Thu Jan 28, 03:50 PM

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson reportedly likes the culture that Brian Flores has built,' making the Miami Dolphins his preferred destination, according to multiple sources.

Footballguys view: That's been the buzz for some time. Watson has a no-trade clause in his contract so he can basically choose where he wants to be traded. The Dolphins are one of the few teams who would have enough firepower to get a trade for Watson done. If he's dealt to Miami, obviously the team would be sending 2020 first-round pick Tua Tagovailoa in the deal.

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson is expected to be of significant interest to the Chicago Bears if the Texans decide to trade him, according to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport.

Footballguys view: The Bears need to find a quarterback in a bad way. They went through Nick Foles and Mitchell Trubisky in 2020 and neither played well for the playoff team. Watson has some nice weapons on offense who could thrive with Watson in charge of the show.

Jets | Deshaun Watson reportedly prefers NYJ    Sat Jan 23, 01:51 PM

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson reportedly said earlier this week that the New York Jets are his top preference among the teams he'd like to be traded to because of their recent hiring of head coach Robert Saleh, according to a report Saturday, Jan. 23, from the Miami Herald.

Footballguys view: Saleh was considered by some to be the 'gem' of the potential head-coaching candidates that were out there. Watson has a no-trade clause so he will get to choose the team he wants to be traded to. We'll see if the Jets in fact put together a blockbuster deal, likely to include Sam Darnold, for Watson at some point this offseason.

Texans | Deshaun Watson has not asked for trade yet    Sun Jan 17, 12:29 PM

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson has not asked the Texans for a trade at this point, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The key term in the headline is 'yet.' Watson's relationship with the Texans seems to be done and done. He has a no-trade clause in his contract which means the Texans cannot just send him to the highest bidder. We'll see if Watson requests the trade in the near future and picks his destination.

Texans | Deshaun Watson 'just wants out'     Sat Jan 16, 02:33 PM

Houston Texas QB Deshaun Watson remains unhappy with the direction of the franchise, and 'just wants out,' a source close to Watson told Sports Illustrated in an online article posted Saturday, Jan. 16.

Footballguys view: Most reports indicate that Watson's relationship with the franchise is past the point of no return. There have been some team-friendly reports saying things can get worked out but we're not so sure. Watson has a no-trade clause in his contract, meaning he gets to call his shot where he wants to go. The Dolphins is a team that some speculate Watson could have as his destination of choice.

Texans | Deshaun Watson unlikely to demand trade    Tue Jan 12, 11:01 PM

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson's 'displeasure with the way the organization has been run of late is indeed real, but it will not lead to his asking out,' according to 'someone familiar with his thinking' via Jerome Solomon of the Houston Chronicle.

Footballguys view: Will he or won't he? That's the biggest question around the Texans right now. Watson has a no-trade clause in his contract so it's not like the Texans can shop him. He'd have to sign off on whatever team is to trade for his services, and some have speculated that could be the Dolphins. Watson's relationship with the Texans in fractured, so the answer to 'will he or won't he' is a wait-and-see at the moment.

Dolphins | Deshaun Watson open to trade to Miami?    Sun Jan 10, 12:32 PM

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson has a no-trade clause in his contract but may consider a trade to the Miami Dolphins if he decides to push the Texans to move him, according to a source.

Footballguys view: That clause means the Texans cannot just send Watson to the highest bidder. They'll have to work to find Watson a place that he wants to go, and that could be with the Dolphins for a trade that would include Tua Tagovailoa. We think it's too soon for the Dolphins to bail on Tagovailoa, but getting Watson would be an upgrade for a team on the rise. The more information that comes out, the more it looks like Watson's relationship with the Texans is done. Stay tuned.

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson received backing from new general manager Nick Caserio on Friday, Jan. 8. 'He's our quarterback,' Caserio said at his introductory news conference. 'I can't tell you how much respect and admiration have for him as a player.'

Footballguys view: Watson may not be a fan of the move to add Caserio. The team is trying to patch things up with their superstar quarterback, and of course Caserio is a fan of Watson -- because everyone should be. Watson was left in the dark on this hiring, and that's not what the team supposedly promised him. We'll see if Watson is more involved in the hiring of the next head coach. There is buzz about Watson wanting a trade but that seems more like sports radio talk than anything real right now.

Texans | Deshaun Watson giving team silent treatment    Thu Jan 7, 07:46 PM

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson is reportedly 'extremely unhappy' with the Texans' front office after team owner Cal McNair suggested the quarterback would have a voice in the selection of Houston's new general manager and head coach, only to have no input on the selection of new general manager Nick Caserio. Watson has reportedly not spoken to the Texans 'in the last few days' despite the team's attempts to reach out to him.

Footballguys view: Watson is clearly not happy with the direction the team is taking. There are rumblings that Watson could ask for a trade but that seems unlikely at this point. We'll see if there's some way the two sides can come together. Watson was supposed to be involved in the process of choosing the next head coach, and he did give input on the GM decision. The Texans did not inform him about Caserio and he instead found out about the move on social media. It seems pretty reasonable for the team to keep their superstar quarterback in the loop.

Footballguys view: Watson took a lot of hits and was sacked five times but kept his team in the game to the very end, with Keke Coutee fumbling inside the 10 at the end instead of him this time. He'll be a strong QB1 play against the Bengals next week.

Footballguys view: Good! It's all about fit in the NFL and we all know that Watson has incredible talent. The team needs to work diligently to find the best fit for their young passer.
