Dallas Cowboys QB Andy Dalton (concussion) is doing 'significantly better,' according to head coach Mike McCarthy, who added that Dalton is close to returning.

However, Dalton would need to reverse course and practice Saturday. 'If Andy would practice (Saturday), that would be the only chance he would have to play in the game,' head coach Mike McCarthy said Friday. 'As of right now, he's not scheduled to practice.'

Footballguys view: Expect Ben Dinucci to get the start and keep everyone except Ezekiel Elliott and maybe Amari Cooper on your bench. The Eagles should be considered the top D/ST play of the week.

Dallas Cowboys QB Andy Dalton (concussion) participated in the team's quarterback meeting Thursday, Oct. 29, but will be held out of practice, according to head coach Mike McCarthy. In all, it makes Dalton unlikely to play Sunday in Week 8, in the estimation of NFL reporter Ian Rapoport.

Cowboys | Dak Prescott not scared of close quarters    Sun Jul 19, 10:13 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott attempted 128 throws into tight coverage in 2019, according to Pro Football Focus. That mark was good for the third-highest total in the league, two behind second-place Andy Dalton, who was signed in free agency to back him up in 2020.

Footballguys view: Prescott should be able to unlock the value of three excellent wide receivers and a big play tight end against defenses that also have to make a point of slowing down Ezekiel Elliott. The Cowboys should have one of the best fantasy football offenses in the league.

Cowboys | Andy Dalton officially signs    Mon May 4, 11:44 AM

Updating a previous report, Dallas Cowboys QB Andy Dalton's contract is official, Monday, May 4. The deal is a one-year, $3 million pact, with an additional $4 million available via incentives through reaching playing-time benchmarks during the regular season and postseason, as well as the team making the playoffs.

Footballguys view: Dalton gets to go back to Texas for one year as a backup to Dak Prescott. This gives the Cowboys plenty of veteran insurance in case Dalton has to be thrust into the starting lineup. Prescott has the franchise tag now but the two sides have until July 15th to work out a new long-term deal.

Cowboys | Andy Dalton signing with Dallas    Sat May 2, 09:17 PM

Free-agent QB Andy Dalton (Bengals) is signing a one-year deal with the Dallas Cowboys worth up to $7 million with $3 million guaranteed, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Dalton will be the veteran backup to Dak Prescott in 2020. The Cowboys are still working on a long-term deal with Prescott, and this move for Dalton has nothing to do with that. Instead of being up a creek without a paddle in case of an injury to Prescott, the Cowboys have opted for a seasoned veteran who could keep things on track in such an occurrence.

Jets | Andy Dalton interests Jets    Sat May 2, 02:55 PM

Free agent QB Andy Dalton has piqued the interest of the New York Jets, who are doing to their 'due diligence' with their most experienced backup QB David Fales having yet to start an NFL game.

Footballguys view: Dalton would be a clear backup to Sam Darnold if he landed with the Jets. Fales knows the system but he's not a reliable backup in case something happens to the Jets young starter. Dalton may be looking to compete for a starting job somewhere like Jacksonville or New England, so being a clear backup at this time may not be high on his list.

NFL | Andy Dalton's options limited    Sat May 2, 12:26 PM

Free agent QB Andy Dalton (Bengals) said the fact that other teams knew Cincinnati was drafting QB Joe Burrow with the No. 1-overall pick limited his trade and other options. 'There were several different factors,' Dalton said, via the team's website. 'This year there were a good amount of quarterbacks that were available. I think it would have worked out differently if I had been a free agent when the new league year started. I was still under contact and that hurt me. I'm sure teams knew they were going to take a quarterback No. 1 and they would release me and there was no reason to rush into anything.'

Footballguys view: It's all about what Dalton wants at this point in his career. Does he want to be a clear backup? Then he's got plenty of options. Does he want to have a chance to compete for a starting job? Then Dalton has only a few teams that would fit that bill. He asked for his release and it was granted, so one would imagine that he wants a chance to push someone for a starting job. That wasn't going to happen with Burrow as the No.1 overall pick and clear franchise QB for the Bengals.

Jaguars | Andy Dalton on option for JAX?    Thu Apr 30, 11:00 AM

Free-agent QB Andy Dalton (Bengals) could be an option for the Jacksonville Jaguars and offensive coordinator Jay Gruden.

Footballguys view: Gruden was Dalton's former coach with the Bengals, so that's why many are speculating a reunion may be in the near future. The Jaguars have Garnder Minshew as their starter as they traded away Nick Foles earlier this year. Dalton could come in to give them veteran depth at least if not beat out Minshew for the top spot. We'll see if they make a move or stay put with what they have in place.

Bengals | Andy Dalton being released by Cincinnati    Thu Apr 30, 09:25 AM

The Cincinnati Bengals are releasing QB Andy Dalton.

Footballguys view: Dalton asked for his release and it was granted. He might have a team or two interested in his services. Perhaps a team like the Patriots or the Jaguars would show interest in Dalton at least as a veteran who can push for the starting job. The Bengals are moving forward with 2020 No.1 overall pick Joe Burrow as their starter.

Bengals | All options on table for Andy Dalton     Fri Apr 17, 01:03 PM

Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton is preparing for a multitude of options if the Bengals select LSU QB Joe Burrow with the first overall pick in the NFL Draft on Thursday, April 23. 'I truly believe they want what's best for me, but I understand it's a business, and you know how that goes,' Dalton said in a recent interview. 'With the first pick, if they take a quarterback like everyone expects, that could trigger something. There's even a scenario where I go back there.'

Footballguys view: The Bengals could just keep Dalton and have him as a veteran backup behind Burrow. So far, no team has shown enough interest to get a trade done for Dalton. Perhaps after they take Burrow, trading Dalton away will become more realistic.

Bengals | Andy Dalton could stay in Cincy    Fri Mar 27, 10:31 PM

Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton could remain with the team for the 2020 season, and 'all options are still on the table' for the quarterback, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.

Footballguys view: The Bengals are going to select a quarterback at No.1 overall in the 2020 NFL draft, likely Joe Burrow from LSU. Dalton could be a solid backup for the Bengals if they don't find a trade partner.

Patriots | NE reportedly not interested in Andy Dalton    Sun Mar 22, 11:41 AM

The New England Patriots have not discussed trading for Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton as a potential successor to QB Tom Brady.

Footballguys view: Dalton would be an interesting option for the Patriots because of his experience and accuracy on short-to-intermediate routes. It doesn't sound like that's going to happen, so we'll see who the Patriots end up with. Jarrett Stidham, Cody Kessler and Brian Hoyer are currently the quarterbacks on the roster.

Bears | Chicago narrowing search for veteran QB    Mon Mar 16, 03:39 PM

Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton and Jacksonville Jaguars QB Nick Foles are reportedly targets for the Chicago Bears, who appear to be focused on acquiring a veteran quarterback to compete with Mitchell Trubisky for the starting job.

Footballguys view: Apparently the Bears have moved on from pursuing Teddy Bridgewater. It wasn't that long ago when the Bears moved up in the draft for Trubisky and now they want to find a way to move on at the quarterback position. As we always say, things move pretty quickly around here.

The Cincinnati Bengals are listening to trade offers for QB Andy Dalton, according to a source Saturday, March 14.

Bengals | Andy Dalton fits with Bears    Thu Feb 13, 02:42 PM

Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton will work with the team this offseason to facilitate a trade., and according to CBS NFL analyst John Breech, the Chicago Bears rank as the top fit.

Footballguys view: We could see Dalton landing with the Bears...it just depends on what the Bengals want for him in return. He would be a good veteran backup to Mitchell Trubisky, and Dalton could take over as the starter if Trubisky continues to struggle.

Bengals | CIN to work on Andy Dalton trade    Wed Feb 12, 01:55 PM

Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton has been told by the Bengals that they will work to trade him.

Footballguys view: The Bengals are moving on from Dalton in 2020, likely with a quarterback (Joe Burrow?) with the No.1 overall pick in the draft. Dalton shouldn't command much from a team in need of a bridge quarterback. It will be interesting to see what the Bengals get in return.

Bengals | Cincinnati undecided about Andy Dalton    Wed Jan 22, 04:47 PM

Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton's future with the Bengals is uncertain at this time, according to director of player personnel Duke Tobin.

Footballguys view: We just don't see Dalton remaining with the Bengals in 2020. The team would save $17.7 million in salary cap space if they trade or release Dalton. Expect the Bengals to select a quarterback with the No.1 overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft.
