News you need to know

From the upgrade/downgrade report (Mon Sep 16): Williams looks like a plodder as a runner, but he scored on a reception and is the clear backup to Aaron Jones - ie an eventual lead back if Jones misses time again this year.

General News (Fri Sep 20): practiced fully on Friday and is not on the team's injury report. He will be available to play this week.

General News (Thu Sep 19): partially participated in Thursday's practice.

Week 3: vs Denver Broncos - $4000

All RB vs DEN

FBG says: Neutral matchup. The Packers employed a run-heavy game script last week as they were protecting a lead for the entire game. This afforded a large workload to Aaron Jones, who rushed 23 times for 116 yards and a touchdown. It also enabled Jamaal Williams to see more work, rushing nine times for 28 yards. While Williams was uninspiring, Matt LaFleur wants to even out the touches between the two running backs which would seem odd for how ineffective Williams was this past week. After a tough outing against the Bears in Week 1, Jones showed he can excel against top run defenses with this big performance against the Vikings. The Packers offensive line also proved they can hang with tough competition as they blocked very well for Jones throughout the afternoon. The only spot to watch will be at left tackle, as David Bakhtiari did look sluggish in pass protection last week, which could be due to lingering back issues that have kept him limited in practice. He is not on the injury report, but keep an eye on it as the outlook of this Packers rushing offense would change with Bakhtiari's absence. The Broncos run defense had a bounceback game last week as they held Bears running backs to 71 rushing yards on 25 attempts. While they have allowed three rushing touchdowns to start the season, this defense has been relatively efficient against the run. They are giving up an average of just 3.4 rushing yards per attempt to running backs--ranking them eighth in the league by that metric. Von Miller has led the charge for this defensive line. Despite his struggles rushing the passer, Miller has made a number of big plays against the run. DeMarcus Walker has also looked good on the interior of this line. The Broncos do have some vulnerabilities on the edges and at safety, as their defensive backs have not tackled well to start the season. When runners can get to the edges quickly to force the secondary into making plays, they can find success--as displayed by Cordarrelle Patterson on a 46-yard run to the outside last week. The Packers do have strong run-blocking tackles to match up well against the talented Broncos edge defenders, and Aaron Jones has the speed to quickly make it into the secondary. The Broncos will need their secondary and linebackers to step up in this one, as the Packers get the nod in the trenches.

Recent Game Summaries

2019 Week 2 vs MIN (9 / 28 / 0 rush, 4 / 3 / 13 / 1 rec - 13.1 points, $3200)

Williams was able to score on an inside screen out of a two back set to open the scoring, but otherwise was quiet on his touches. He got a good helping of carries and targets, but was unremarkable with the ball in his hands. Williams did run efficiently and fell forward on most carries, but he is clearly the inferior runner and won't have relevance unless Jones goes down.

Packers | Jamaal Williams listed as limited (Thu Sep 19, 06:11 PM) - Green Bay Packers RB Jamaal Williams (ankle) was limited during practice Thursday, Sept. 19.

Our View: Matt Lafleur was talking about giving Williams more touches this week to keep Aaron Jones fresh, but it appears Jones is the healthier back right now.

Packers | Aaron Jones, Jamaal Williams to get even work (Wed Sep 18, 03:02 PM) - Green Bay Packers RBs Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams will split work in an effort to keep Jones fresh for later in the season, according to head coach Matt LaFleur Wednesday, Sept. 18, who said he wants to 'even up' touches between the pair.

Our View: The Packers are at home to face the Broncos this week. Over two weeks, Broncos opponents have ran the ball more than they've passed the ball to keep that Denver pass rush at bay. Expect that to happen on Sunday with Jones perhaps having the most fantasy value. Jones could perform like a RB2 in Week 3, while Williams size and ability to punch it in from near the goal line could make him a deep flex play.

OT David Bakhtiari (back) and CB Ka'dar Hollman (neck) were also limited in practice Friday but are listed as questionable. OT Bryan Bulaga (rest), CB Josh Jackson (Achilles), CB Kevin King (hamstring, chest), C Corey Linsley (elbow), OG Cole Madison (ankle), LB Blake Martinez (shoulder), S Will Redmond (ankle), WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling (shoulder), RB Jamaal Williams (shoulder), CB Tramon Williams (rest) and CB Jaire Alexander (knee) fully participated in practice Friday and no longer appear on the injury report.

Our View: Bakhtiari coming back to practice was great news for a team about to face the Vikings defense.
