Week 12: at San Francisco 49ers

All RB vs SF

FBG says: Neutral matchup. Green Bay's run game, which is trending towards a true timeshare split between Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams, ranks in the middle-of-the-pack in both rushing volume and rushing efficiency this season, making neither player a particularly strong fantasy option while both are healthy. Immediately following Aaron Jones' 19-carry, 107-yard, and 4-touchdown performance against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 5, head coach Matt LaFleur said noted his worries about overusing Aaron Jones early in the season. Since these comments, LaFleur has put his metaphoric money where his mouth is, playing Aaron Jones no more than 63-percent of Green Bay's offensive snaps and giving him no more than 13 carries in any game since. Jamaal Williams has played approximately 50-percent of the Packers' offensive snaps since Week 5; however, he averages less than 8.0 carries per game to Jones' 11.4 over that span. Green Bay's offensive line is one of the league's stronger units, but in a backfield where snaps are almost perfectly split between two players, neither is a particularly enticing fantasy option. The San Francisco 49ers' defense has faced very little volume through the first 10 games of the 2019 season, but when their opposition has attempted to run the football, they have posted quality efficiency totals, as the 49ers allow 4.7 yards per carry this season, 7th-worst in the league. In total, the low rushing volume, coupled with a lack of rushing touchdowns, allowed has enabled the 49ers to post the 4th best defense with regards to fantasy points allowed to opposing running backs this season. This mark, however, is likely to regress significantly in the coming weeks, as the strengths of their talented defensive playmakers are almost exclusively defending the pass. Defensive lineman Arik Armstead is the exception to this rule. While the rest of the 49ers' defensive line heavily favors rushing the passer as opposed to stopping the run, Arik Armstead is one of the league's best run-stoppers. Much has been made of Nick Bosa's impressive rookie season in the trenches, but Armstead might be the 49ers' best player in the trenches. Elsewhere, however, in San Francisco's defense, there is a total lack of run-stopping talent. At linebacker, the 49ers' starters are a glaring weak link for this defense. Dre Greenlaw, a fifth-round pick in his rookie season, was thrust into action after Kwon Alexander tore his pectoral muscle, and he has struggled against the run thus far. Alongside him, Fred Warner, who is in just his second year in the league, is one of the league's worst run-stopping linebackers once again this season. Lastly, San Francisco's secondary offers little support defending the run, leaving their defense vulnerable at the second and third levels. The Green Bay Packers' volume on the ground will be the determining factor in their rushing totals on the day, as they should win this battle in the trenches, allowing Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams to post strong efficiency numbers here in Week 12.
