Summary

The Colts elected to draft upstart running back Jonathan Taylor with the 41st overall selection in the 2020 NFL Draft. In three years with Wisconsin, Taylor totaled 55 touchdowns and over 6,100 rushing yards including two consecutive 2,000-yard seasons. He won the Doak Walker Award for the nation's top running back two years in a row in 2018 and 2019. He comes to the NFL with high expectations and should be an immediate piece inserted into the Colts lineup, perhaps as early as Week 1. Taylor will battle for snaps with the incumbent back, Marlon Mack who is coming off his first 1,000-yard season in his brief three year career. Mack is a free agent at the end of the 2020 season and all accounts suggest Taylor will assume the top running back role after Mack moves on. Taylor's rise to stardom may come earlier if he proves he can learn the offense and execute according to coach Frank Reich's desires. Mack may begin the season as the team's primary ball carrier, but Taylor and his wealth of skills will not be far behind, which ultimately may lead to a changing of the guard by midseason, if not sooner. If Taylor has any flaws, it's his ball security issues. He fumbled 18 times in three college seasons, losing possession 15 times or once every 64 touches. He improved those ratios in his last year with Wisconsin, however it's something to take notice of, especially if it happens in the NFL. Another potential deterrent to Taylor's fantasy value is that while he is a rare talent, he did not have many receptions in his college career. His finished with 42 receptions, 26 of which came in his last season. It's not that he isn't capable, his number just wasn't called as often despite his talents. Melvin Gordon, who also played at Wisconsin, had only 22 career receptions in four years at Wisconsin. He has 224 career receptions in the NFL in five seasons. Taylor will be groomed to take over the lead running back role in Indianapolis. When that happens he has Top 10 fantasy running back potential. (May 4)
