Recent Game Summaries

2019 Week 17 vs BUF (4 / 3 / 36 / 0 rec, 1 / 20 / 0 rush)

With Demaryius Thomas hurt and also relatively ineffective, Smith has taken on a larger role and stepped into the No. 3 spot. The team used him in several ways, including out of the backfield once, where he took a reverse outside and made it to the one yard line, setting up Jamison Crowder's touchdown reception two plays later.

2019 Week 16 vs PIT (4 / 3 / 32 / 0 rec)

Smith had a really nice grab in the fourth quarter, a 14-yard completion that came about because Smith had great inside position on the defender, who appeared to be mostly focused on keeping the receiver short of the first down marker. Smith caught the ball in stride and got outside of the defender, who took a bad angle and allowed Smith to gain the first down.

2019 Week 15 vs BAL (5 / 3 / 40 / 0 rec)

Starting in place of Demaryus Thomas, Smith made a few nice plays, including on a 31-yard reception. On the play, Smith caught a short pass and then took advantage of a missed tackle and some blockers to add about 26 yards to what should have been a five yard play. He did have a massive fumble on a drive near the end of the first quarter. He was wide open for a pass from Darnold, which he caught easily, but had the ball too loose in his hands, resulting in a fumble when the defender wrapped him. He was saved by the ball going out of bounds as well as a penalty which negated the play, but he's going to have to work on ball security if he wants to get a bigger role in the offense.

2019 Week 14 vs MIA (3 / 1 / 37 / 0 rec)

Smith only had one catch but he was the center of two big plays. His catch was one which should have been short, but the defender went for an interception not a tackle, and so when Smith got the ball, he had a wide open field to run for yards down the sideline. Smith was also the target on a pass which drew a questionable pass-interference penalty which helped get the Jets into field goal range to win the game. He had good position on the play, which forced the defender to arrive a little earlier than he should have, though it was close enough to where the officials could have let the play go.

2019 Week 13 vs CIN (3 / 2 / 23 / 0 rec)

Smith got his usual two catches, both for decent gains, both near the end of a half. He saw the field on about 25 percent of offensive plays, but hasn't been very involved.

2019 Week 12 vs OAK (1 / 1 / 22 / 0 rec)

Quarterback Sam Darnold hit Smith down the middle of the field for a 22-yard gain. Smith, who caught the ball in stride, had taken the inside position on the defender, and Darnold threw the ball perfectly to that side, giving Smith the only chance at the throw.

2019 Week 9 vs MIA (3 / 1 / 20 / 0 rec)

Smith had an unreal kick return of 78 yards where he flashed some speed, great balance and a nice stiff arm. Unfortunately, the Jets - down 21-7 at the time - couldn't convert on that drive as Sam Darnold threw an ill-advised pass for an interception, killing the momentum Smith had kicked off. Smith saw a few targets on the Jets' final drive, catching one for a nice 20-yard gain but also missed on one several plays later.

2019 Week 8 vs JAX (4 / 2 / 10 / 0 rec, 1 / 13 / 0 rush)

Smith was the target on Sam Darnold's second to last interception, but found some success on a solid 13-yard run late in the game.

2019 Week 7 vs NE (1 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec)

For the second straight week, Smith was targeted, but this week he didn't make the catch. He did see the field 16 times, so he does seem to be the fourth receiver, for what little that is worth.

2019 Week 6 vs DAL (1 / 1 / 5 / 0 rec)

Smith was the odd man out in the passing game, seeing just eight offensive snaps on the day, and just one target in the first quarter. He was utilized more in the return game.

2019 Week 5 vs PHI (0 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec, 1 / 19 / 1 rush)

A wide receiver by trade, Smith is only notable for the fact that he scored on an end around with some excellent blocking downfield in the fourth quarter when the Eagles were well in control. He saw just seven snaps total on offense and no other action.
