Week 7: at New York Giants

All QB vs NYG

FBG says: Good matchup. Kyler Murray has found a groove here in his rookie season for the Arizona Cardinals, as has head coach Kliff Kingsbury. Murray has thrown for nearly 600 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 0 interceptions over his last two games. Murray clearly favors veteran Larry Fitzgerald as his number-one target through the air this season. Fitzgerald leads the Cardinals in targets, receptions, and yards through six games here in his 16th professional season. Running back David Johnson has also stepped up in the absence of wide receiver Christian Kirk, whose status for week seven is in question after he suffered an ankle injury in week five. Johnson, who has exceptional route running and pass-catching skills for a running back, ranks second on the team in targets, receptions, and yards while leading the Cardinals in receiving touchdowns so far in 2019. Without Kirk, KeeSean Johnson is the team's clear number-three option through the air, but his production lags far behind that of David Johnson and Larry Fitzgerald this season. The Cardinals run one of the NFL's fastest offenses, which Kingsbury designed to maximize scoring opportunities throughout a game. Kingsbury has succeeded in this regard, with the fifth-most pass attempts in the NFL through six games. When coaching in college, Kliff Kingsbury's Texas Tech teams were consistently above-average in pass protection. Likely thanks to his offensive scheme, the Cardinals' offensive line has transformed into one of the league's best pass-blocking units in 2019 after a dismal 2018 campaign. The Cardinals' passing game is trending upwards as Kyler Murray and Kliff Kingsbury acclimate to the NFL, and a matchup with the New York Giants will likely provide little resistance in week seven. Aside from one game against the Washington Redskins' bottom-tier passing attack, the 2019 season has been one to forget for the Giants' pass defense. A series of offseason transactions created massive turnover on the Giants' defense, and the results through six games have been horrendous. Along the defensive line, the Giants lack a reliable pass-rush this season. Markus Golden has already recorded seven sacks on the season, but otherwise, the Giants defensive line is devoid of any above-average pass-rushers. At linebacker, Alec Ogletree and Ryan Connelly are the strength of the Giants' pass defense. Ogletree has always been much stronger defending the pass than defending the run, and nothing has changed in 2019. The secondary, however, has been one of the league's worst. Janoris Jenkins and DeAndre Baker have been two of the league's weakest cover corners. Aside from one game against Case Keenum and an ill-prepared Dwayne Haskins, the Giants have allowed at least 250 yards in every game and 300 yards in four of the five games. Jenkins and Baker have been torched week-in and week-out this season. The Giants' safeties, Antoine Bethea and Jabrill Peppers have been only marginally better than their cornerbacks. Expect the Arizona Cardinals' high-volume passing attack to attack New York's porous secondary from all angles. Week seven sets up as a fantastic opportunity for Kyler Murray and the Cardinals' offense to string together a third straight strong performance through the air.
