Week 14: vs Carolina Panthers

All WR vs CAR

FBG says: Good matchup. The firing of Todd Haley and elevation of Freddie Kitchens into the Browns' coordinator role has worked wonders for Baker Mayfield. The rookie broke out of a bad slump when Kitchens took over in Week 9, going on to complete 74% of his throws with 9 touchdowns (to just 1 interception) over the next 3 games. He struggled mightily in last Sunday's loss to the Texans but managed to put up 397 yards at a robust 9.2 per attempt. (He also had a 77-yard touchdown called back for holding.) Mayfield was just 5 of 13 with 3 interceptions at halftime but went 24 of 30 after the break against the Texans' semi-prevent defense. It wasn't the prettiest performance but served as a reminder that he's capable of utilizing his explosive weaponry and posting big numbers. Jarvis Landry remains a sure-handed producer out of the slot, and lightning-fast rookie Antonio Callaway, for all of his inconsistency, has made at least one big catch in five straight games. It's not easy to nail down the Browns' skill-position production, with a variety of mediocre receivers combined with Mayfield spreading the ball around effectively. But Mayfield's performance since Jackson's departure has brought plenty of optimism for their potential. Carolina's pass defense is in rough shape at the moment, consistently allowing quarterbacks to relax and receivers to win downfield battles. Over the last 5 weeks, they've given up an average of 275 yards per game and 8.3 per attempt, with 14 touchdowns through the air. The pass rush, usually the defense's strength, is struggling to create pressure, putting far too much pressure on the mediocre cornerbacks. Rookie Donte Jackson has flashed shutdown ability, but fallen off over the past few weeks, and James Bradberry remains similarly inconsistent on the other side. Slot man Captain Munnerlyn has been a liability for years, while safeties Mike Adams and Eric Reid are primarily employed for their run defense, not their downfield coverage help. The secondary, as constructed, will likely continue to trade off solid coverage snaps with bad downfield lapses. Lately, it's resulted in far more bust than boom, and the Browns' receivers could be looking at a ton of downfield room Sunday. Over that five-game span, seven different wideouts have topped 80 yards, with 9 touchdowns going to the receiver position.

2018 Week 6 vs LAC (8 / 6 / 82 / 0 rec)

Ratley was forced into service after the injuries to Rashard Higgins and Derrick Willies in the previous two weeks. Ratley played well in the game, benefitting from the defensive attention paid to Jarvis Landry and David Njoku. He saw an end zone shot in the second quarter but was unable to haul in a catchable pass. He may have lost the ball in the sun on the play. He did bounce back with a nice over the shoulder catch which went for 27 yards in the second quarter. He came close to scoring in the fourth quarter, catching a 23-yarder and getting tackled at the Los Angeles one-yard line. He appeared to get shaken up on the low tackle but returned to action a few plays later. It appears he will serve as Cleveland's No. 3 receiver going forward.
