Recent Game Summaries

2018 Week 12 vs PIT (3 / 2 / 44 / 0 rec)

Heuerman and Keenum finally connected on a long ball when Keenum found him down the seam for a 29 yard gain in the 1st quarter. He was quiet in the middle of the game, but Heuerman got open up the seam on a play-action pass later in the 4th quarter for a 13 yard gain. Heuerman left the game late in the 4th quarter with what appeared to be a back injury. He has since been diagnosed with broken ribs and a bruised lung, and will miss the rest of the season. Fellow tight end LaCosse had more targets and found the end zone before Heuerman's exit.

2018 Week 11 vs LAC (5 / 4 / 20 / 0 rec)

Heuerman broke out with a career game a couple of weeks ago, but couldn't get much going in week 11. His targets continue to be of the very short variety. Heuerman secured a crossing route for a short gain late in the 2nd quarter. He caught another short out route in the 3rd quarter. He had a bad drop on a crossing route that would have converted 3rd and 7 in the 4th quarter. He secured two more short passes on the next drive as Denver drove down to kick the game-winning field goal with less than 2 minutes in the game.

2018 Week 9 vs HOU (11 / 10 / 83 / 1 rec)

Heuerman had a career day, leading the team with 11 targets and converting 10 of them into 83 yards and a touchdown. Heuerman piled up broken tackles as he bulldozed and stiff-armed defenders on seemingly every reception, never going down at first contact. One concern is that Heuerman worked almost exclusively in the short game, never catching anything more than 5-8 yards from the line of scrimmage. He dropped his first target, a slant route that would have converted 3rd and short in the 2nd quarter. Keenum found Heuerman with a short screen pass on the next drive and the big tight end evaded a couple of tackle attempts without slowing down, leveling one defender and spinning away from another. Heuerman split out wide right in a 4WR set later in the 2nd quarter, drawing a slower linebacker in man coverage. Keenum found him on a deep comeback that the Heuerman secured over his defender. Heuerman caught another short out right just before halftime and piled on a couple more broken tackles, running over one defender and stiff-arming another. Heuerman caught another screen on Denver's first offensive drive of the 2nd half. Heuerman secured an amazing catch between two defenders for a 3rd quarter touchdown, showing great chemistry with Keenum who threw the ball before Heuerman ever even began turning around on his comeback route. Keenum flipped an improvised shovel pass in Heuerman's direction for a minimal gain in the 4th quarter. Heuerman converted a 3rd and 4 and a 4th and 1 on the Broncos final drive as Keenum continued to target him in the short game.

2018 Week 8 vs KC (5 / 1 / 4 / 1 rec)

Heuerman was targeted in the end zone with a back shoulder fade route from Keenum late in the 3rd, but he couldn't hold on. Heuerman redeemed himself two plays later with a diving catch over the goal line on an out route, his first touchdown of the season. It was his only catch of the contest. Heuerman was targeted just twice, while backup TE LaCosse saw 4 targets.

2018 Week 7 vs ARI (0 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec)

Heuerman appeared to have a touchdown catch at the end of the 1st half, but he was flagged for offensive pass interference after the score. It was his only target of the day.

2018 Week 6 vs LAR (6 / 3 / 23 / 0 rec)

Heuerman caught a skinny post underneath prevent coverage for an 11 yard gain on 3rd and 30 in the 2nd quarter. Keenum found him underneath on a short curl route later in the 2nd. Keenum checked it down to Heuerman one final time on a shallow crossing route late in the 4th. Keenum looked for Heuerman on a corner route in the end zone on the next play, but the ball wasn't even close.

2018 Week 5 vs NYJ (4 / 2 / 18 / 0 rec)

Heuerman only drew 4 targets as Case Keenum attempted a season-high 51 passes. He caught a short out route in the 1st quarter on his first target of the day. Heuerman was targeted in the end zone at near the end of the 2nd quarter, but Keenum threw the ball out of bounds. Heuerman caught a short out route late in the 4th quarter for a short gain. Heuerman secured a Keenum fumble at the end of the 1st half. Fellow tight end Matt LaCosse was equally ineffective in the passing game.

2018 Week 4 vs KC (7 / 4 / 57 / 0 rec)

Heuerman picked up a team high 7 targets(tied with Thomas and Sanders) and the most yards in Jake Butt's absence. He got to work early, lining up with his hand in the dirt and securing an out route for nice catch and run. Keenum checked it down to him on a shallow crossing route later in the drive. Heurman hauled in another short out route on the next drive of the 1st quarter. Heuerman was the target on Keenum's only interception of the day, but defender Eric Murray just made an outstanding play ripping the ball away as Heuerman fell to the turf and tried to secure the catch in the 3rd. Heuerman's biggest gain was a 36 yard catch right up the seam at the end of the 4th quarter, setting the Broncos up near the Kansas City red zone with 33 seconds left.

2018 Week 3 vs BAL (4 / 2 / 7 / 0 rec)

Heuerman drew 4 targets, his highest of the season, but only managed to convert them to 7 yards on 2 catches. He caught a desperate dump off pass for a minimal gain from a scrambling Keenum near Denver's own goal line in the 1st quarter. He hauled in a short out route in the Baltimore red zone late in the 4th quarter. Keenum targeted him again on the next play, but Baltimore linebacker Onwuasor undercut the crossing route and picked off the pass.

2018 Week 2 vs OAK (3 / 2 / 10 / 0 rec)

Heuerman split reps at tight end with Butt, but functioned primarily as a blocker. He had one diving catch on a 4th quarter curl route from the left slot, and another short catch on an out route in the last 2 minutes drive of the game.

2018 Week 1 vs SEA (1 / 1 / 15 / 0 rec)

Heuerman started alongside Jake Butt in 2TE sets. He wasn't used much in the passing game. He made a nice back shoulder catch in the second quarter for a gain of 15, his only target of the day.
