News you need to know

From the upgrade/downgrade report (Mon Nov 18): Gurley had a strong game vs. the Bears with little else working for the Rams offense. He'll likely get a big workload again vs. Baltimore for as long as his team can hang in the game.

Recent Game Summaries

2019 Week 10 vs PIT (12 / 73 / 0 rush, 4 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec - 7.3 points, $6100)

Gurley was one of the few bright spots for the Rams in the road loss to Pittsburgh. Gurley only saw 12 touches, however, and did not log a reception despite 42 team passes. Gurley had four chunk runs in the game, showing nice burst up the middle but did not find any touchdown opportunities or quality angles to exploit downfield for more pronounced gains. Gurley was wide open on third down but Jared Goff misfired the running back and Gurley also added a drop amidst his lost receiving effort. Gurley has only one game of more than 15 yards receiving on the season with the highlight of his profile being seven total touchdowns despite the Rams struggling on offense compared to expectations.

2019 Week 8 vs CIN (10 / 44 / 1 rush, 1 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec - 10.4 points, $7400)

Gurley was the clear lead back early in the game against Cincinnati but barely saw the field later as the Rams salted away the easy home win and ceded time to Darrell Henderson. Gurley curiously saw only one target as a non-factor in the passing game. Gurley has received one target or fewer in more than half his games this season. Gurley's stat line was bolstered by a 20+ yard run in the closing minute of the first half on a relative give-up play on third-and-10. On his most impactful drive Gurley converted third-and-short in the red zone and capped the drive with a goal-line touchdown to the edge of the defense.

2019 Week 7 vs ATL (18 / 41 / 0 rush, 1 / 1 / 13 / 1 rec - 12.4 points, $6400)

Swapping their status from a week ago, Gurley was active with Malcolm Brown out with injury against the Falcons. Gurley saw a season-high 19 touches in the comfortable road win with Darrell Henderson serving as the clear backup. Gurley posted an early-game run for nearly 10 yards but was largely held in check on the ground other than churning through contact on a couple of occasions. Gurley made one of the highlight offensive plays of the game for the Rams with a diving touchdown reception on a wheel route, a small window for the throw and an even better catch by Gurley. Big plays as a runner were limited to less than 10 yards by the Falcons defense for Gurley, but he nearly scored on the ground with two successful red zone runs before being stopped at the goal line on one offensive sequence. Henderson did not challenge Gurley for the lead role and mostly played in the second half with a huge lead.

2019 Week 5 vs SEA (15 / 51 / 2 rush, 5 / 3 / 6 / 0 rec - 19.7 points, $6800)

Gurley dominated the Rams backfield against Seattle in terms of snaps and touches. He ran with power inside versus contact and ripped off two runs of consequence. However, he was contained from reaching the open field by the Seattle defense as even five targets did not result in a quality receiving performance and, save for two red zone touchdowns, Gurley lacked overall impact on the ground. Gurley added a drop and a lost fumble for his up-and-down game. On the positive side, Gurley looked closer to his early-2018 and 2017 self this week and he has seen minimal rotation with Malcolm Brown.

2019 Week 4 vs TB (5 / 16 / 2 rush, 11 / 7 / 54 / 0 rec - 26 points, $7000)

Gurley's run game volume took a massive hit in the shootout loss to the Buccaneers as the Rams passed an unreal 68 times. On the plus side, Gurley amassed 11 targets in the comeback mode game script, including early-game receptions which eluded Gurley in the first three games of the season (four receptions total). Gurley did log two drops as missed opportunities, but also drew a defensive pass interference penalty as he was wide open on a wheel route. Among Gurley's meager five carries were two impressive red zone touchdowns, both through contact. The Rams defense will need a quick turnaround to provide the Rams run game more volume in Seattle for Week 5.

2019 Week 3 vs CLE (14 / 43 / 0 rush, 1 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec - 4.3 points, $6700)

Gurley once against saw a quality snap count but the Rams run game sputtered to the tune of 50 yards combined between Gurley and Malcolm Brown. Gurley's quizzical lack of involvement in the passing game continues in Week 3 as he saw a mere one target. Gurley also missed on a touchdown opportunity, being tackled at the one-yard-line on a notable red zone carry and did not see the point-blank carry to finish the drive. Outside of a back-to-back sequence where Gurley gained 15 yards, the Rams offensive line struggled to create holes for Gurley throughout the game.

2019 Week 2 vs NO (16 / 63 / 1 rush, 4 / 3 / 4 / 0 rec - 15.7 points, $7000)

Gurley was used more regularly in the red zone against the Saints, an uptick in his offensive involvement from the season opener. Gurley's passing game blackout continued, however, with a mere four yards through the air for the second week in a row despite the screen game being a Rams staple in previous seasons. Gurley added a drop but contributed a handful of strong rushing plays including a third-and-short conversion, goal-line touchdown, and a chunk run of more than 15 yards. Gurley's status as the lead back for the Rams has not been in question through two weeks, but his highlight plays have turned from regularity over the past two seasons to flashing moments.

2019 Week 1 vs CAR (14 / 97 / 0 rush, 1 / 1 / 4 / 0 rec - 11.1 points, $7900)

Gurley was a full-go by reports for Week 1, however, he logged a mere 15 touches and Malcolm Brown was heavily involved with 11 carries, including high-leverage red zone work. Gurley was sluggish on his scant opportunities in the first half but surged to life in the second half with two runs of more than 15 yards and two other strong runs through contact, vintage Gurley plays. Gurley posted more than 100 total yards but did not see any touchdown opportunities as Malcolm Brown was the preferred short-yardage option near the goal line. The Rams draw the Saints in Week 2, a potential shootout in Los Angeles.

Our View: Matthews will be a big addition to this defense. He, Dante Fowler and Aaron Donald will keep Mason Rudolph uncomfortable all afternoon.
